On the Island of Malta

1 And when they had been brought ^G1295 safely ^G1295 through ^G1295 to shore, then ^G5119 we learned ^G1921 that the island ^G3520 was called ^G2564 [fn]Malta ^G3194.

2 And the [fn]natives ^G915 showed ^G3930 us extraordinary ^G5177 affection ^G5363; for because ^G1223 of the rain ^G5205 that had set ^G2186 in and because ^G1223 of the cold ^G5592, they kindled ^G681 a fire ^G4443 and received ^G4355 us all ^G3956. 3 But when Paul ^G3972 had gathered ^G4962 a bundle ^G4128 of sticks ^G5434 and laid ^G2007 them on the fire ^G4443, a viper ^G2191 came ^G1831 out ^G1831 [fn]because ^G575 of the heat ^G2329 and fastened ^G2510 itself on ^G2510 his hand ^G5495. 4 And when ^G5613 the [fn]natives ^G915 saw ^G3708 the creature ^G2342 hanging ^G2910 from his hand ^G5495, they began saying ^G3004 to one ^G240 another ^G240, “Undoubtedly ^G3843 this ^G3778 man ^G444 is a murderer ^G5406, and though he has been saved ^G1295 from the sea ^G2281, [fn]Justice ^G1349 has not allowed ^G1439 him to live ^G2198.” 5 However ^G3303 G3767 he shook ^G660 the creature ^G2342 off ^G660 into the fire ^G4442 and suffered ^G3958 no ^G3762 harm ^G2556. 6 But they were waiting ^G4328 for him to soon ^G3195 swell ^G4092 up ^G4092 or ^G2228 suddenly ^G869 fall ^G2667 down ^G2667 dead ^G3498. But after they had waited ^G4328 a long ^G4183 time and had seen ^G2334 nothing ^G3367 unusual ^G824 happen ^G1096 to him, changing ^G3328 their minds ^G3328, they began to say ^G3004 that he was a god ^G2316.

7 Now ^G1161 in the areas ^G4012 around that place ^G5117 were lands ^G5564 belonging to the leading ^G4413 man ^G4413 of the island ^G3520, named ^G3686 Publius ^G4196, who ^G3739 welcomed ^G324 us and entertained ^G3579 us courteously ^G5390 three ^G5140 days ^G2250. 8 And it happened ^G1096 that the father ^G3962 of Publius ^G4196 was lying ^G2621 afflicted ^G4912 with fever ^G4446 and dysentery ^G1420; and Paul ^G3972, going ^G1525 to see him and having prayed ^G4336, laid ^G2007 his hands ^G5495 on ^G2007 him and healed ^G2390 him. 9 And after this ^G3778 had happened ^G1096, the rest ^G3062 of the people on the island ^G3520 who had ^G2192 diseases ^G769 were coming ^G4334 to him and being ^G2323 healed ^G2323. 10 They also bestowed ^G5091 on us many ^G4183 honors ^G5092 of respect ^G5092; and when we were setting ^G321 sail ^G321, they [fn]supplied ^G2007 us with [fn]all ^G3588 we needed ^G5532.

Paul Arrives in Rome

11 Now at the end ^G3326 of three ^G5140 months ^G3376 we set ^G321 sail ^G321 on an Alexandrian ^G222 ship ^G4143 which had wintered ^G3914 at the island ^G3520, and which had ^G3902 [fn]the Twin ^G1359 Brothers ^G1359 for ^G3902 its ^G3902 figurehead ^G3902.

12 After we put ^G2609 into Syracuse ^G4946, we stayed ^G1961 there for three ^G5140 days ^G2250. 13 From there ^G3606 we sailed ^G4022 around ^G4022 and arrived ^G2658 at Rhegium ^G4484, and after ^G3326 a day ^G2250 when a south ^G3558 wind ^G3558 sprang ^G1920 up ^G1920, on the second ^G1206 day ^G1206 we came ^G2064 to Puteoli ^G4223. 14 [fn]There ^G3757 we found ^G2147 some brothers ^G80, and were invited ^G3870 to stay ^G1961 with them for seven ^G2033 days ^G2250; and thus ^G3779 we came ^G2064 to Rome ^G4516. 15 And the brothers ^G80, when they heard ^G191 about ^G4012 us, came ^G2064 from there ^G2547 as far ^G891 as the [fn]Market ^G675 G5410 of ^G675 G5410 Appius ^G675 G5410 and [fn]Three ^G5140 Inns ^G4999 to meet ^G529 us. When Paul ^G3972 saw ^G3708 them, he thanked ^G2168 God ^G2316 and took ^G2983 courage ^G2294.

16 And when ^G3753 we entered ^G1525 Rome ^G4516, Paul ^G3972 was allowed ^G2010 to stay ^G3306 by himself ^G1438, with the soldier ^G4757 who was guarding ^G5442 him.

Paul’s Ministry in Rome

17 And it happened ^G1096 that after ^G3326 three ^G5140 days ^G2250 [fn]Paul called ^G4779 together ^G4779 those ^G3588 who were the leading ^G4413 men ^G4413 of the Jews ^G2453, and when they came ^G4905 together ^G4905, he began saying ^G3004 to them, “Brothers ^G435 G80, though I had done ^G4160 nothing ^G3762 against ^G1727 our people ^G2992 or ^G2228 the customs ^G1485 of our [fn]fathers ^G3971, yet I was delivered ^G3860 as a prisoner ^G1198 from Jerusalem ^G2414 into the hands ^G5495 of the Romans ^G4514.

18 And when they had examined ^G350 me, they were willing ^G1014 to release ^G630 me because ^G1223 there was no ^G3367 ground ^G156 [fn]for putting me to death ^G2288. 19 But when the Jews ^G2453 [fn]objected ^G483, I was forced ^G315 to appeal ^G1941 to ^G1941 Caesar ^G2541, not that I had ^G2192 any ^G5100 accusation ^G2723 against ^G2723 my nation ^G1484. 20 For this ^G3778 reason ^G156, therefore ^G3767, I [fn]requested ^G3870 to see ^G3708 you and to speak ^G4354 with you, for I am wearing ^G4029 this ^G3778 chain ^G254 for the sake ^G6025 of the hope ^G1680 of Israel ^G2474.” 21 And they said ^G3004 to him, “We have neither ^G3777 received ^G1209 letters ^G1121 from Judea ^G2449 concerning ^G4012 you, nor ^G3777 have any ^G5100 of the brothers ^G80 come ^G3854 here ^G3854 and reported ^G518 or ^G2228 spoken ^G2980 anything ^G5100 bad ^G4190 about ^G4012 you. 22 But we desire ^G515 to hear ^G191 from you what ^G3739 you think ^G5426; for concerning ^G4012 this ^G3778 sect ^G139, it is known ^G1110 to us that it is spoken ^G483 against ^G483 everywhere ^G3837.”

23 And when they had set ^G5021 a day ^G2250 for Paul, they came ^G2064 to him at his lodging ^G3578 in large ^G4183 numbers ^G4183; and he was explaining ^G1620 to them by solemnly ^G1263 bearing ^G1263 witness ^G1263 about the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316 and trying to persuade ^G3982 them concerning ^G4012 Jesus ^G2424, from both ^G5037 the Law ^G3551 of Moses ^G3475 and from the Prophets ^G4396, from morning ^G4404 until ^G2193 evening ^G2073. 24 And some ^G3588 were being persuaded ^G3982 by the things ^G3004 spoken ^G3004, but others ^G3588 were ^G569 not ^G569 believing ^G569. 25 And when they disagreed ^G800 with one ^G240 another ^G240, they began leaving ^G630 after Paul ^G3972 had spoken ^G3004 one ^G1520 word ^G4487, “The Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151 rightly ^G2573 spoke ^G2980 through ^G1223 Isaiah ^G2268 the prophet ^G4396 to your fathers ^G3962, 26 saying ^G3004,

‘GO ^G4198 TO THIS ^G3778 PEOPLE ^G2992 AND SAY ^G3004,

“[fn]YOU WILL KEEP ^G189 ON HEARING ^G191, [fn]BUT WILL NOT UNDERSTAND ^G4920;

AND [fn]YOU WILL KEEP ^G991 ON SEEING ^G991, BUT WILL NOT PERCEIVE ^G3708;

27 FOR THE HEART ^G2588 OF THIS ^G3778 PEOPLE ^G2992 HAS BECOME ^G3975 DULL ^G3975,

AND WITH THEIR EARS ^G3775 THEY SCARCELY ^G917 HEAR ^G191,

AND THEY HAVE CLOSED ^G2576 THEIR EYES ^G3788;

LEST ^G3379 THEY MIGHT SEE ^G3708 WITH THEIR EYES ^G3788,

AND HEAR ^G191 WITH THEIR EARS ^G3775,

AND UNDERSTAND ^G4920 WITH THEIR HEART ^G2588 AND RETURN ^G1994,

AND I HEAL ^G2390 THEM.”’

28 Therefore ^G3767 let it be known ^G1110 to you that this ^G3778 salvation ^G4992 of God ^G2316 was sent ^G649 to the Gentiles ^G1484—they will also ^G2532 hear ^G191.” 29 [fn][When he had spoken ^G3004 these ^G3778 words, the Jews ^G2453 departed ^G565, having ^G2192 a great ^G4183 dispute ^G4803 among ^G1722 themselves ^G1438.]

30 And he stayed ^G1696 two ^G1333 full ^G3650 years ^G1333 [fn]in his own ^G2398 rented ^G3410 quarters ^G3410 and was welcoming ^G588 all ^G3956 who came ^G1531 to him, 31 [fn]preaching ^G2784 the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316 and teaching ^G1321 concerning ^G4012 the Lord ^G2962 Jesus ^G2424 Christ ^G5547 with all ^G3956 confidence ^G3954, unhindered ^G209.
