Various Statutes

1 “You shall not see ^H7200 your brother’s ^H251 ox ^H7794 or ^H176 his sheep ^H7716 straying ^H5080 away ^H5080 and [fn]ignore ^H5956 them; you shall certainly ^H7725 bring ^H7725 them back ^H7725 to your brother ^H251.

2 And if ^H518 your brother ^H251 is not near ^H7138 you, or if you do not know ^H3045 him, then you shall bring ^H622 it home ^H8432 to your house ^H1004, and it shall be ^H1961 with you until ^H5704 your brother ^H251 searches ^H1875 for ^H1875 it; then you shall give ^H7725 it back ^H7725 to him. 3 Thus ^H3651 you shall do ^H6213 with his donkey ^H2543, and you shall do ^H6213 likewise ^H3651 with his garment ^H8071, and you shall do ^H6213 likewise ^H3651 with anything ^H3605 lost ^H9 by your brother ^H251, which ^H834 he has lost ^H6 and you have found ^H4672. You are not allowed ^H3201 to [fn]ignore ^H5956 them. 4 You shall not see ^H7200 your brother’s ^H251 donkey ^H2543 or ^H176 his ox ^H7794 fallen ^H5307 down ^H5307 on the way ^H1870 and [fn]ignore ^H5956 them; you shall certainly ^H6965 help ^H6965 him to raise ^H6965 them up ^H6965.

5 “A woman ^H802 shall not wear ^H1961 man’s ^H1397 clothing ^H3627, nor ^H3808 shall a man ^H1397 put ^H3847 on ^H3847 a woman’s ^H802 clothing ^H8071; for whoever ^H3605 does ^H6213 these ^H428 things ^H428 is an abomination ^H8441 to Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430.

6 “If ^H3588 you happen ^H7122 to ^H7122 come ^H7122 upon ^H7122 a bird’s ^H6833 nest ^H7064 along the way ^H1870, in any ^H3605 tree ^H6086 or ^H176 on the ground ^H776, with young ^H667 ones ^H667 or ^H176 eggs ^H1000, and the mother ^H517 sitting ^H7257 on the young ^H667 or ^H176 on the eggs ^H1000, you shall not take ^H3947 the mother ^H517 with the young ^H1121; 7 you shall certainly ^H7971 let ^H7971 the mother ^H517 go ^H7971, but the young ^H1121 you may take ^H3947 for yourself, in order ^H4616 that it may be well ^H3190 with you and that you may prolong ^H748 your days ^H3117.

8 “When ^H3588 you build ^H1129 a new ^H2319 house ^H1004, you shall make ^H6213 a parapet ^H4624 for your roof ^H1406, so that you will not bring ^H7760 bloodguilt ^H1818 on your house ^H1004 if ^H3588 anyone ^H5307 falls ^H5307 from it.

9 “You shall not sow ^H2232 your vineyard ^H3754 with two ^H3610 kinds ^H3610 of seed, lest ^H6435 [fn]all ^H4395 the produce ^H4395 of the seed ^H2233 which ^H834 you have sown ^H2232 and the increase ^H8393 of the vineyard ^H3754 become ^H6942 defiled ^H6942.

10 “You shall not plow ^H2790 with an ox ^H7794 and a donkey ^H2543 together ^H3162.

11 “You shall not wear ^H3847 a material ^H8162 mixed ^H8162 of wool ^H6785 and flax ^H6593 together ^H3162.

12 “You shall make ^H6213 yourself tassels ^H1434 on the four ^H702 corners ^H3671 of your garment ^H3682 with which ^H834 you cover ^H3680 yourself.

13 “If ^H3588 any ^H376 man ^H376 takes ^H3947 a wife ^H802 and goes ^H935 in ^H935 to her and then [fn]turns ^H8130 against ^H8130 her,

14 and charges ^H7760 her with shameful ^H5949 deeds ^H1697 and brings ^H3318 forth ^H3318 against her a bad ^H7451 name ^H8034 and says ^H559, ‘I took ^H3947 this ^H2088 woman ^H802, but when I came ^H7126 near ^H7126 her, I did not find ^H4672 her a virgin ^H1331,’ 15 then the girl’s ^H5291 father ^H1 and her mother ^H517 shall take ^H3947 and bring ^H3318 out ^H3318 the evidence of the girl’s ^H5291 virginity ^H1331 to the elders ^H2205 of the city ^H5892 at the gate ^H8179. 16 Then the girl’s ^H5291 father ^H1 shall say ^H559 to the elders ^H2205, ‘I gave ^H5414 my daughter ^H1323 to this ^H2088 man ^H376 as a wife ^H802, but he [fn]turned ^H8130 against ^H8130 her; 17 and behold ^H2009, he has charged ^H7760 her with shameful ^H5949 deeds ^H1697, saying ^H559, “I did not find ^H4672 your daughter ^H1323 a virgin ^H1331.” But [fn]this ^H428 is the evidence ^H1331 of ^H1331 my daughter’s ^H1323 virginity ^H1331.’ And they shall spread ^H6566 the garment ^H8071 before ^H6440 the elders ^H2205 of the city ^H5892. 18 So the elders ^H2205 of that city ^H5892 shall take ^H3947 the man ^H376 and chastise ^H3256 him, 19 and they shall fine ^H6064 him [fn]one hundred ^H3967 shekels of silver ^H3701 and give ^H5414 it to the girl’s ^H5291 father ^H1 because ^H3588 he brought ^H3318 forth ^H3318 a bad ^H7451 name ^H8034 against a virgin ^H1330 of Israel ^H3478. And she shall be ^H1961 his wife ^H802; he cannot ^H3201 H3808 [fn]divorce ^H7971 her all ^H3605 his days ^H3117.

20 “But if ^H518 this ^H2088 [fn]charge ^H1697 is true ^H571, that the girl ^H5291 was not found ^H4672 a virgin ^H1331, 21 then they shall bring ^H3318 out ^H3318 the girl ^H5291 to the doorway ^H6607 of her father’s ^H1 house ^H1004, and the men ^H376 of her city ^H5892 shall stone ^H5619 her, and she will die ^H4191 because ^H3588 she has committed ^H6213 a disgraceful ^H5039 act ^H5039 in Israel ^H3478 by playing ^H2181 the ^H2181 harlot ^H2181 in her father’s ^H1 house ^H1004; thus you shall purge ^H1197 the evil ^H7451 from among ^H7130 you.

22 “If ^H3588 a man ^H376 is found ^H4672 lying ^H7901 with a married ^H1166 H1167 woman ^H802, then both ^H1571 H8147 of them shall die ^H4191, the man ^H376 who lay ^H7901 with the woman ^H802, and the woman ^H802; thus you shall purge ^H1197 the evil ^H7451 from Israel ^H3478.

23 “If ^H3588 there is a girl ^H5291 who is a virgin ^H1330 engaged ^H781 to a man ^H376, and another man ^H376 finds ^H4672 her in the city ^H5892 and lies ^H7901 with her, 24 then you shall bring ^H3318 them both ^H8147 out ^H3318 to the gate ^H8179 of that city ^H5892, and you shall stone ^H5619 them, and they will die ^H4191; the girl ^H5291, because ^{H5921 H1697 H834} she did not cry ^H6817 out ^H6817 in the city ^H5892, and the man ^H376, because ^{H5921 H1697 H834} he has violated ^H6031 his neighbor’s ^H7453 wife ^H802. Thus you shall purge ^H1197 the evil ^H7451 from among ^H7130 you.

25 “But if ^H518 in the field ^H7704 the man ^H376 finds ^H4672 the girl ^H5291 who is engaged ^H781, and the man ^H376 forces ^H2388 her and lies ^H7901 with her, then only ^H905 the man ^H376 who ^H834 lies ^H7901 with her shall die ^H4191. 26 But you shall do ^H6213 nothing ^H3808 H1697 to the girl ^H5291; there ^H369 is ^H369 no ^H369 sin ^H2399 in the girl ^H5291 worthy of death ^H4194, for just ^H834 as a man ^H376 rises ^H6965 against ^H5921 his neighbor ^H7453 and murders ^H7523 him, so ^H3651 is this ^H2088 case ^H1697. 27 When ^H3588 he found ^H4672 her in the field ^H7704, the engaged ^H781 girl ^H5291 cried ^H6817 out ^H6817, but there ^H369 was ^H369 no ^H369 one to save ^H3467 her.

28 “If ^H3588 a man ^H376 finds ^H4672 a girl ^H5291 who is a virgin ^H1330, who ^H834 is not engaged ^H781, and seizes ^H8610 her and lies ^H7901 with her and they are found ^H4672, 29 then the man ^H376 who lay ^H7901 with her shall give ^H5414 to the girl’s ^H5291 father ^H1 fifty ^H2572 shekels of silver ^H3701, and she shall become ^H1961 his wife ^H802 because ^H8478 H834 he has violated ^H6031 her; he cannot ^H3201 H3808 divorce ^H7971 her all ^H3605 his days ^H3117.

30 “[fn]A man ^H376 shall not take ^H3947 his father’s ^H1 wife ^H802 so that he will not uncover ^H1540 his father’s ^H1 skirt ^H3671.
