The Vanity of Life
1 There H3426 is H3426 an evil H7451 which H834 I have seen H7200 under H8478 the sun H8121 and it is prevalent H7227 [fn]among H5921 men H120—
2 a man H376 to whom H834 God H430 gives H5414 riches H6239 and wealth H5233 and honor H3519 so that his soul H5315 lacks H2638 nothing H369 of all H3605 that he desires H183; yet God H430 does not empower H7980 him to eat H398 from them, for a foreigner H5237 eats H398 from them. This H2088 is [fn]vanity H1892 and a sickening H2483 evil H7451. 3 If H518 a man H376 becomes the father H3205 of one hundred H3967 children and lives H2421 many H7227 years H8141, however many H7227 the days H3117 of his years H8141 may be, but his soul H5315 is H7646 not satisfied H7646 with good H2896 things H2896, and he does not even H1571 have H1961 a proper burial H6900, then I say H559, “Better H2896 the miscarriage H5309 than H4480 he, 4 for that one comes H935 in vanity H1892 and goes H1980 into darkness H2822; and that one’s name H8034 is covered H3680 in darkness H2822. 5 Indeed, that one never H3808 sees H7200 the sun H8121 and never H3808 knows H3045 anything; [fn]that one has more rest H5183 than H4480 he. 6 Even if H432 the other man lives H2421 one thousand H505 years H8141 twice H6471 and does not see H7200 good H2896 things H2896—do not all H3605 go H1980 to the same H259 place H4725?”
7 All H3605 a man’s H120 labor H5999 is for his mouth H6310, and yet H1571 the soul H5315 is not fulfilled H4390. 8 For what H4100 advantage H3148 does the wise H2450 man H2450 have over H4480 the fool H3684? What H4100 advantage does the afflicted H6041 man H6041 have, knowing H3045 how to walk H1980 before H5048 the living H2416? 9 What H4758 the eyes H5869 see H4758 is better H2896 than H4480 what the soul H5315 goes H1980 after. This H2088 too H1571 is vanity H1892 and striving H7469 after wind H7307.
10 Whatever H4100 H7945 exists H1961 has already H3528 been named H7121 H8034, and it is known H3045 what H834 man H120 is; and he cannot H3201 H3808 dispute H1777 with him who H7945 is stronger H8623 than H4480 he is. 11 For there H3426 are H3426 many H7235 words H1697 which increase H7235 vanity H1892. What H4100 then is the advantage H3148 to a man H120? 12 For who H4310 knows H3045 what H4100 is good H2896 for a man H120 during his lifetime H2416, during the few H4557 days H3117 of his vain H1892 life H2416? He will make H6213 do with them like a shadow H6738. For who H4310 can tell H5046 a man H120 what H4100 will be after H310 him under H8478 the sun H8121?
