Parable of Two Eagles and a Vine

1 Now the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068 came ^H1961 to me saying ^H559,

2 “Son ^H1121 of man ^H120, propound ^H2330 a riddle ^H2420 and speak ^H4911 a parable ^H4912 to the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478, 3 and you will say ^H559, ‘Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, “A great ^H1419 eagle ^H5404 with great ^H1419 wings ^H3671, long ^H750 pinions ^H83, and a full ^H4392 plumage ^H5133 of [fn]many ^H7553 colors ^H7553 came ^H935 to Lebanon ^H3844 and took ^H3947 away the top ^H6788 of the cedar ^H730. 4 He plucked ^H6998 off ^H6998 the topmost ^H7218 of its young ^H3242 twigs ^H3242 and brought ^H935 it to a land ^H776 of merchants ^H3667; he set ^H7760 it in a city ^H5892 of traders ^H7402. 5 He also took ^H3947 some ^H4480 of the seed ^H2233 of the land ^H776 and planted ^H5414 it in a field ^H7704 fit for seed ^H2233. He [fn]placed ^H3947 it beside ^H5921 abundant ^H7227 waters ^H4325; he set ^H7760 it like a willow ^H6851. 6 Then it sprouted ^H6779 and became ^H1961 a low ^H8217, spreading ^H5628 vine ^H1612 with its foliage ^H1808 turned ^H6437 toward ^H413 him, but its roots ^H8328 remained ^H1961 under ^H8478 it. So it became ^H1961 a vine ^H1612 and yielded ^H6213 shoots ^H909 and sent ^H7971 out ^H7971 branches ^H6288.

7 “But there was [fn]another ^H259 great ^H1419 eagle ^H5404 with great ^H1419 wings ^H3671 and much ^H7227 plumage ^H5133; and behold ^H2009, this ^H2088 vine ^H1612 bent ^H3719 its roots ^H8328 toward ^H5921 him and sent ^H7971 out ^H7971 its foliage ^H1808 toward him from the beds ^H6170 where ^H4302 it was planted ^H4302, that he might water ^H8248 it. 8 It was planted ^H8362 in a good ^H2896 field ^H7704 beside ^H413 abundant ^H7227 waters ^H4325, that it might yield ^H6213 branches ^H6057 and bear ^H5375 fruit ^H6529 and become ^H1961 a majestic ^H155 vine ^H1612.”’ 9 Say ^H559, ‘Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, “Will it succeed ^H6743? Will he not pull ^H5423 up ^H5423 its roots ^H8328 and cut ^H7082 off ^H7082 its fruit ^H6529, so that it dries ^H3001 up—so that all ^H3605 its sprouting ^H6780 leaves ^H2965 dry ^H3001 up ^H3001? And neither ^H3808 by great ^H1419 [fn]strength ^H2220 nor ^H3808 by many ^H7227 people ^H5971 can it be raised ^H5375 from its roots ^H8328 again. 10 And behold ^H2009, though it is planted ^H8362, will it succeed ^H6743? Will it not completely ^H3001 dry ^H3001 up ^H3001 as soon as the east ^H6921 wind ^H7307 strikes ^H5060 it—dry ^H3001 up ^H3001 on the beds ^H6170 where ^H6780 it sprouted ^H6780?”’”

The King Shall Die in Babylon

11 Moreover, the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068 came ^H1961 to me, saying ^H559,

12 “Say ^H559 now ^H4994 to the rebellious ^H4805 house ^H1004, ‘Do you not know ^H3045 what ^H4100 these ^H428 things ^H428 mean?’ Say ^H559, ‘Behold ^H2009, the king ^H4428 of Babylon ^H894 came ^H935 to Jerusalem ^H3389, took ^H3947 its king ^H4428 and princes ^H8269, and brought ^H935 them to him in Babylon ^H894. 13 He took ^H3947 one of the royal ^H4410 seed ^H2233 and cut ^H3772 a covenant ^H1285 with him and brought ^H935 him under oath ^H423. He also took ^H3947 away the dominant ^H352 one of the land ^H776, 14 that the kingdom ^H4467 might [fn]become lowly ^H8217, not lifting ^H5375 itself up ^H5375, but keeping ^H8104 his covenant ^H1285 that it might continue ^H5975. 15 But he rebelled ^H4775 against him by sending ^H7971 his messengers ^H4397 to Egypt ^H4714 that they might give ^H5414 him horses ^H5483 and many ^H7227 [fn]troops ^H5971. Will he succeed ^H6743? Will he who does ^H6213 such ^H428 things ^H428 escape ^H4422? Can he indeed break ^H6565 the covenant ^H1285 and escape ^H4422? 16 As I live ^H2416,’ declares ^H5002 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, ‘Surely ^H518 H3808 in the [fn]country ^H4725 of the king ^H4428 who made ^H4427 him king ^H4427, whose ^H834 oath ^H423 he despised ^H959 and whose ^H834 covenant ^H1285 he broke ^H6565, [fn]in Babylon ^H894 he shall die ^H4191. 17 And Pharaoh ^H6547 with his mighty ^H1419 military ^H2428 force ^H2428 and great ^H1419 assembly ^H6951 will not [fn]help ^H6213 him in the war ^H4421, when they cast ^H8210 up ^H8210 ramps ^H5550 and build ^H1129 siege ^H1785 walls ^H1785 to cut ^H3772 off ^H3772 many ^H7227 lives ^H5315. 18 Now he despised ^H959 the oath ^H423 by breaking ^H6565 the covenant ^H1285, and behold ^H2009, he [fn]pledged ^H5414 his allegiance ^H3027, yet did ^H6213 all ^H3605 these ^H428 things ^H428; he shall not escape ^H4422.’” 19 Therefore ^H3651, thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, “As I live ^H2416, surely ^H518 H3808 My oath ^H423 which ^H834 he despised ^H959 and My covenant ^H1285 which ^H834 he broke ^H6565, I will [fn]put ^H5414 on his head ^H7218. 20 I will spread ^H6566 My net ^H7568 over ^H5921 him, and he will be caught ^H8610 in My snare ^H4686. Then I will bring ^H935 him to Babylon ^H894 and enter ^H8199 into ^H8199 judgment ^H8199 with him there ^H8033 regarding the unfaithful ^H4603 H4604 act ^H4604 which ^H834 he has committed ^H4603 against Me. 21 All ^H3605 the [fn]choice ^H4005 men ^H4005 in all ^H3605 his troops ^H102 will fall ^H5307 by the sword ^H2719, and the remnant ^H7604 will be scattered ^H6566 to every ^H3605 wind ^H7307; and you will know ^H3045 that I, Yahweh ^H3068, have spoken ^H1696.”

22 Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, “I will also take ^H3947 a sprig from the lofty ^H7311 top ^H6788 of the cedar ^H730 and set ^H5414 it out; I will pluck ^H6998 from the topmost ^H7218 of its young ^H3127 twigs ^H3127 a tender ^H7390 one ^H7390, and I will plant ^H8362 it on an exalted ^H1364 and lofty ^H8524 mountain ^H2022. 23 On the high ^H4791 mountain ^H2022 of Israel ^H3478 I will plant ^H8362 it, that it may lift ^H5375 up ^H5375 [fn]boughs ^H6057 and yield ^H6213 fruit ^H6529 and become ^H1961 a majestic ^H117 cedar ^H730. And birds ^H6833 of every ^H3605 [fn]kind ^H3671 will dwell ^H7931 under ^H8478 it; they will dwell ^H7931 in the shade ^H6738 of its [fn]branches ^H1808. 24 And all ^H3605 the trees ^H6086 of the field ^H7704 will know ^H3045 that I am Yahweh ^H3068; I bring ^H8213 down ^H8213 the exalted ^H1364 tree ^H6086, exalt ^H1361 the low ^H8217 tree ^H6086, dry ^H3001 up ^H3001 the green ^H3892 tree ^H6086, and make the dry ^H3002 tree ^H6086 flourish ^H6524. I am Yahweh ^H3068; I have spoken ^H1696, and I will do ^H6213 it.”
