Yahweh Establishes the Oath with Isaac

1 Now there was a famine ^H7458 in the land ^H776, besides ^H4480 H905 the previous ^H7223 famine ^H7458 that had occurred ^H1961 in the days ^H3117 of Abraham ^H85. So Isaac ^H3327 went ^H1980 to Gerar ^H1642, to Abimelech ^H40 king ^H4428 of the Philistines ^H6430.

2 And Yahweh ^H3068 appeared ^H7200 to him and said ^H559, “Do not go ^H3381 down ^H3381 to Egypt ^H4714; dwell ^H7931 in the land ^H776 of which ^H834 I shall tell ^H559 you. 3 Sojourn ^H1481 in this ^H2088 land ^H776, and I will be with you and bless ^H1288 you, for to you and to your seed ^H2233 I will give ^H5414 all ^H3605 these ^H411 lands ^H776, and I will establish ^H6965 the oath ^H7621 which ^H834 I swore ^H7650 to your father ^H1 Abraham ^H85. 4 And I will multiply ^H7235 your seed ^H2233 as the stars ^H3556 of heaven ^H8064, and I will give ^H5414 your seed ^H2233 all ^H3605 these ^H411 lands ^H776; and by your seed ^H2233 all ^H3605 the nations ^H1471 of the earth ^H776 [fn]shall be blessed ^H1288; 5 because ^H6118 H834 Abraham ^H85 listened ^H8085 to My voice ^H6963 and kept ^H8104 My charge ^H4931, My commandments ^H4687, My statutes ^H2708, and My laws ^H8451.”

Isaac and Abimelech

6 So Isaac ^H3327 [fn]lived ^H3427 in Gerar ^H1642.

7 Then the men ^H376 of the place ^H4725 asked ^H7592 about his wife ^H802. And he said ^H559, “She is my sister ^H269,” for he was ^H3372 afraid ^H3372 to say ^H559, “my wife ^H802,” thinking, “lest ^H6435 the men ^H376 of the place ^H4725 kill ^H2026 me on ^H5921 account ^H5921 of ^H5921 Rebekah ^H7259, for she is beautiful ^H2896 in appearance ^H4758.” 8 Now it happened ^H1961, when ^H3588 he had been there ^H8033 a long ^H748 time ^H3117, that Abimelech ^H40 king ^H4428 of the Philistines ^H6430 looked ^H8259 out ^H8259 through ^H1157 a window ^H2474 and saw ^H7200, and behold ^H2009, Isaac ^H3327 was [fn]caressing ^H6711 his wife ^H802 Rebekah ^H7259. 9 Then Abimelech ^H40 called ^H7121 Isaac ^H3327 and said ^H559, “Behold ^H2009, surely ^H389 she is your wife ^H802! How ^H349 then did you say ^H559, ‘She is my sister ^H269’?” And Isaac ^H3327 said ^H559 to him, “Because ^H3588 I said ^H559, ‘Lest ^H6435 I ^H6435 die ^H4191 on ^H5921 account ^H5921 of ^H5921 her.’” 10 And Abimelech ^H40 said ^H559, “What ^H4100 is this ^H2088 you have done ^H6213 to us? One ^H259 of the people ^H5971 might easily ^H4592 have lain ^H7901 with your wife ^H802, and you would have brought ^H935 guilt ^H817 upon us.” 11 So Abimelech ^H40 commanded ^H6680 all ^H3605 the people ^H5971, saying ^H559, “He who touches ^H5060 this ^H2088 man ^H376 or his wife ^H802 shall surely ^H4191 be put ^H4191 to ^H4191 death ^H4191.”

12 And Isaac ^H3327 sowed ^H2232 in that land ^H776 and [fn]reaped ^H4672 in the same ^H1931 year ^H8141 one hundredfold ^H3967 H8180. And Yahweh ^H3068 blessed ^H1288 him, 13 and the man ^H376 became ^H1431 great ^H1431 and continued ^H1980 to grow ^H1432 greater ^H1432 until ^H5704 he became ^H1431 very ^H3966 great ^H1431; 14 and he had ^H1961 possessions ^H4735 of flocks ^H6629 and possessions ^H4735 of herds ^H1241 and many ^H7227 servants ^H5657, so that the Philistines ^H6430 were ^H7065 jealous ^H7065 of him. 15 Now all ^H3605 the wells ^H875 which ^H834 his father’s ^H1 servants ^H5650 had dug ^H2658 in the days ^H3117 of Abraham ^H85 his father ^H1, the Philistines ^H6430 stopped ^H5640 up ^H5640 [fn]by filling ^H4390 them with earth ^H6083. 16 Then Abimelech ^H40 said ^H559 to Isaac ^H3327, “Go ^H1980 away from us, for you are ^H6105 [fn]too ^H3966 mighty ^H6105 for us.” 17 And Isaac ^H3327 departed ^H1980 from there ^H8033 and camped ^H2583 in the valley ^H5158 of Gerar ^H1642 and [fn]settled ^H3427 there ^H8033.

The Quarrel over the Wells

18 Then Isaac ^H3327 dug ^H2658 again ^H7725 the wells ^H875 of water ^H4325 which ^H834 [fn]had been dug ^H2658 in the days ^H3117 of his father ^H1 Abraham ^H85, but the Philistines ^H6430 had stopped ^H5640 them up ^H5640 after ^H310 the death ^H4194 of Abraham ^H85; and he [fn]called ^H7121 them by the same ^H8034 names ^H8034 by which ^H834 his father ^H1 had called ^H7121 them.

19 Then Isaac’s ^H3327 servants ^H5650 dug ^H2658 in the valley ^H5158 and found ^H4672 there ^H8033 a well ^H875 of [fn]flowing ^H2416 water ^H4325. 20 And the herdsmen ^H7462 of Gerar ^H1642 contended ^H7378 with the herdsmen ^H7462 of Isaac ^H3327, saying ^H559, “The water ^H4325 is ours!” So he named ^H7121 H8034 the well ^H875 [fn]Esek ^H6230, because ^H3588 they quarreled ^H6229 with him. 21 Then they dug ^H2658 another ^H312 well ^H875, and they contended ^H7378 over ^H5921 it also ^H1571, so he called ^H7121 H8034 it [fn]Sitnah ^H7856. 22 Then he moved ^H6275 away ^H6275 from there ^H8033 and dug ^H2658 another ^H312 well ^H875, and they did not contend ^H7378 over ^H5921 it; so he named ^H7121 H8034 it [fn]Rehoboth ^H7344, and he said ^H559, “[fn]At ^H3588 H6258 last ^H3588 H6258 Yahweh ^H3068 has made ^H7337 [fn]room ^H7337 for us, and we will be ^H6509 fruitful ^H6509 in the land ^H776.”

23 And he went ^H5927 up ^H5927 from there ^H8033 to Beersheba ^H884. 24 And Yahweh ^H3068 appeared ^H7200 to him that ^H1931 night ^H3915 and said ^H559,

“I am the God ^H430 of your father ^H1 Abraham ^H85;

Do not fear ^H3372, for I am with you.

I will bless ^H1288 you and multiply ^H7235 your seed ^H2233,

For the sake ^H5668 of My servant ^H5650 Abraham ^H85.”

25 So he built ^H1129 an altar ^H4196 there ^H8033 and called ^H7121 upon the name ^H8034 of Yahweh ^H3068 and pitched ^H5186 his tent ^H168 there ^H8033; and there ^H8033 Isaac’s ^H3327 servants ^H5650 dug ^H3738 out ^H3738 a well ^H875.

Isaac’s Oath with Abimelech

26 Now Abimelech ^H40 came ^H1980 to him from Gerar ^H1642 [fn]with his adviser ^H4828 Ahuzzath ^H276 and Phicol ^H6369 the commander ^H8269 of his army ^H6635.

27 And Isaac ^H3327 said ^H559 to them, “Why ^H4069 have you come ^H935 to me, since you hate ^H8130 me and have sent ^H7971 me away ^H7971 from you?” 28 Then they said ^H559, “We see ^H7200 plainly ^H7200 that Yahweh ^H3068 has been ^H1961 with you; so we said ^H559, ‘Let there now ^H4994 be an oath ^H423 between ^H996 us—between ^H996 [fn]you and us—and let us cut ^H3772 a covenant ^H1285 with you, 29 that you will do ^H6213 us no ^H518 harm ^H7451, just ^H834 as we have not touched ^H5060 you [fn]and have done ^H6213 to you nothing ^H7534 but ^H7534 good ^H2896 and have sent ^H7971 you away ^H7971 in peace ^H7965. You are now ^H6258 the blessed ^H1288 of Yahweh ^H3068.’” 30 Then he made ^H6213 them a feast ^H4960, and they ate ^H398 and drank ^H8354. 31 In the morning ^H1242 they arose ^H7925 early ^H7925, and each ^H376 swore ^H7650 to [fn]the other ^H1931; then Isaac ^H3327 sent ^H7971 them away ^H7971, and they departed ^H1980 from him in peace ^H7965. 32 Now it happened ^H1961 on that ^H1931 day ^H3117, that Isaac’s ^H3327 servants ^H5650 came ^H935 in ^H935 and told ^H5046 him about ^H5921 H182 the well ^H875 which ^H834 they had dug ^H2658 and said ^H559 to him, “We have found ^H4672 water ^H4325.” 33 So he called ^H7121 it Shibah ^H7656; therefore ^H5921 H3651 the name ^H8034 of the city ^H5892 is Beersheba ^H884 to this ^H2088 day ^H3117.

34 And Esau ^H6215 was forty ^H705 years ^H8141 old ^H1121, and he took ^H3947 as a wife ^H802 Judith ^H3067 the daughter ^H1323 of Beeri ^H882 the Hittite ^H2850, and also Basemath ^H1315 the daughter ^H1323 of Elon ^H356 the Hittite ^H2850; 35 and they [fn]brought ^H1961 bitterness ^H4786 H7307 to Isaac ^H3327 and Rebekah ^H7259.
