Jacob Goes Up to Bethel

1 Then God ^H430 said ^H559 to Jacob ^H3290, “Arise ^H6965, go ^H5927 up ^H5927 to Bethel ^H1008 and [fn]live ^H3427 there ^H8033, and make ^H6213 an altar ^H4196 there ^H8033 to God ^H410, who appeared ^H7200 to you when you fled ^H1272 [fn]from your brother ^H251 Esau ^H6215.”

2 So Jacob ^H3290 said ^H559 to his household ^H1004 and to all ^H3605 who ^H834 were with him, “Put ^H5493 away ^H5493 the foreign ^H5236 gods ^H430 which ^H834 are among ^H8432 you and cleanse ^H2891 yourselves and change ^H2498 your garments ^H8071; 3 and let us arise ^H6965 and go ^H5927 up ^H5927 to Bethel ^H1008, and I will make ^H6213 an altar ^H4196 there ^H8033 to God ^H410, who answered ^H6030 me in the day ^H3117 of my distress ^H6869 and has been ^H1961 with me [fn]wherever ^H1870 H834 I have gone ^H1980.” 4 So they gave ^H5414 to Jacob ^H3290 all ^H3605 the foreign ^H5236 gods ^H430 which ^H834 [fn]they had ^H3027 and the rings ^H5141 which ^H834 were in their ears ^H241, and Jacob ^H3290 hid ^H2934 them under ^H8478 the [fn]oak ^H424 which ^H834 was near ^H5973 Shechem ^H7927.

5 Then they journeyed ^H5265 on, and there was [fn]a terror ^H2847 from God ^H430 upon the cities ^H5892 which ^H834 were around ^H5439 them, and they did not pursue ^H7291 the sons ^H1121 of Jacob ^H3290. 6 So Jacob ^H3290 came ^H935 to Luz ^H3870 (that is, Bethel ^H1008), which ^H834 is in the land ^H776 of Canaan ^H3667, he and all ^H3605 the people ^H5971 who ^H834 were with him. 7 And he built ^H1129 an altar ^H4196 there ^H8033 and called ^H7121 the place ^H4725 [fn]El-bethel ^H416, because ^H3588 there ^H8033 God ^H430 had revealed ^H1540 Himself to him when he fled ^H1272 [fn]from his brother ^H251. 8 Then Deborah ^H1683, Rebekah’s ^H7259 nurse ^H3243, died ^H4191, and she was buried ^H6912 below ^H4480 H8478 Bethel ^H1008 under ^H8478 the oak ^H437; it was named ^H7121 H8034 [fn]Allon-bacuth ^H439.

Jacob Is Renamed Israel

9 Then God ^H430 appeared ^H7200 to Jacob ^H3290 again ^H5750 when he came ^H935 from Paddan-aram ^H6307, and He blessed ^H1288 him.

10 And God ^H430 said ^H559 to him,

“Your name ^H8034 is Jacob ^H3290;

Your name shall no ^H3808 longer ^H5750 be called ^H7121 Jacob ^H3290,

But Israel ^H3478 shall be your name ^H8034.”

Thus He called ^H7121 his name Israel ^H3478. 11 God ^H430 also said ^H559 to him,

“I am [fn]God ^H410 Almighty ^H7706;

Be ^H6509 fruitful ^H6509 and multiply ^H7235;

A nation ^H1471 and an assembly ^H6951 of nations ^H1471 shall [fn]come ^H1961 from you,

And kings ^H4428 shall [fn]come ^H3318 forth ^H3318 from your loins ^H2504.

12 “And the land ^H776 which ^H834 I gave ^H5414 to Abraham ^H85 and Isaac ^H3327,

I will give ^H5414 it to you,

And I will give ^H5414 the land ^H776 to your seed ^H2233 after you.”

13 Then God ^H430 went ^H5927 up ^H5927 from him in the place ^H4725 where ^H834 He had spoken ^H1696 with him. 14 And Jacob ^H3290 set ^H5324 up a pillar ^H4676 in the place ^H4725 where ^H834 He had spoken ^H1696 with him, a pillar ^H4676 of stone ^H68, and he poured ^H5258 out ^H5258 a drink ^H5262 offering ^H5262 on it; he also poured ^H3332 oil ^H8081 on it. 15 So Jacob ^H3290 named ^H7121 H8034 the place ^H4725 where ^H834 H8033 God ^H430 had spoken ^H1696 with him, [fn]Bethel ^H1008.

16 Then they journeyed ^H5265 from Bethel ^H1008; and there was still ^H5750 some ^H3530 distance ^H3530 H776 to go ^H935 to Ephrath ^H672, and Rachel ^H7354 gave ^H3205 birth ^H3205, and she [fn]suffered ^H7185 severely ^H7185 in her labor ^H3205. 17 Now it happened that when she was in severe ^H7185 labor ^H3205 the midwife ^H3205 said ^H559 to her, “Do not fear ^H3372, for now ^H1571 H2088 you have another son ^H1121.” 18 Now it happened ^H1961 as her soul ^H5315 was departing ^H3318 (for she died ^H4191), that she named ^H7121 H8034 him [fn]Ben-oni ^H1126; but his father ^H1 called ^H7121 him [fn]Benjamin ^H1144. 19 So Rachel ^H7354 died ^H4191 and was buried ^H6912 on the way ^H1870 to Ephrath ^H672 (that is, Bethlehem ^H1035). 20 And Jacob ^H3290 set ^H5324 up a pillar ^H4676 over ^H5921 her grave ^H6900; that is the pillar ^H4676 of Rachel’s ^H7354 grave ^H6900 to this day ^H3117. 21 Then Israel ^H3478 journeyed ^H5265 on ^H5265 and pitched ^H5186 his tent ^H168 beyond ^H4480 H1973 the [fn]tower ^H4029 of ^H4029 [fn]Eder ^H4029.

The Sons of Jacob

22 Now it happened ^H1961 while Israel ^H3478 was dwelling ^H7931 in that land ^H776, that Reuben ^H7205 went ^H1980 and lay ^H7901 with Bilhah ^H1090 his father’s ^H1 concubine ^H6370, and Israel ^H3478 heard ^H8085 of it.

And there were twelve ^H8147 H6240 sons ^H1121 of Jacob ^H3290—

23 the sons ^H1121 of Leah ^H3812:

Reuben ^H7205, Jacob’s ^H3290 firstborn ^H1060,

then Simeon ^H8095 and Levi ^H3878 and Judah ^H3063 and Issachar ^H3485 and Zebulun ^H2074;

24 the sons ^H1121 of Rachel ^H7354:

Joseph ^H3130 and Benjamin ^H1144;

25 and the sons ^H1121 of Bilhah ^H1090, Rachel’s ^H7354 servant-woman ^H8198:

Dan ^H1835 and Naphtali ^H5321;

26 and the sons ^H1121 of Zilpah ^H2153, Leah’s ^H3812 servant-woman ^H8198:

Gad ^H1410 and Asher ^H836.

These ^H428 are the sons ^H1121 of Jacob ^H3290 who ^H834 were born ^H3205 to him in Paddan-aram ^H6307.

27 And Jacob ^H3290 came ^H935 to his father ^H1 Isaac ^H3327 at Mamre ^H4471 of Kiriath-arba ^H7153 (that is, Hebron ^H2275), where ^H834 H8033 Abraham ^H85 and Isaac ^H3327 had sojourned ^H1481.

28 Now the days ^H3117 of Isaac ^H3327 were 180 ^H3967 H8084 years ^H8141.

29 And Isaac ^H3327 breathed ^H1478 his last ^H1478 and died ^H4191 and was gathered ^H622 to his people ^H5971, an old ^H2205 man ^H2205 and full ^H7649 of days ^H3117; and his sons ^H1121 Esau ^H6215 and Jacob ^H3290 buried ^H6912 him.
