1 Then Joseph H3130 fell H5307 on his father’s H1 face H6440 and wept H1058 over H5921 him and kissed H5401 him. 2 And Joseph H3130 commanded H6680 his servants H5650 the physicians H7495 to embalm H2590 his father H1. So the physicians H7495 embalmed H2590 Israel H3478. 3 Then the forty H705 days H3117 to do this were fulfilled H4390, because in this manner H3651 the days H3117 of embalming H2590 are fulfilled H4390. And the Egyptians H4714 wept H1058 for him seventy H7657 days H3117.
4 Then the days H3117 of weeping H1068 for him were H5674 past H5674, and Joseph H3130 spoke H1696 to the household H1004 of Pharaoh H6547, saying H559, “If H518 now H4994 I have found H4672 favor H2580 in your sight H5869, please H4994 speak H1696 in the ears H241 of Pharaoh H6547, saying H559, 5 ‘My father H1 made me swear H7650, saying H559, “Behold H2009, I am about to die H4191; in my grave H6913 which H834 I dug H3738 for myself in the land H776 of Canaan H3667, there H8033 you shall bury H6912 me.” So now H6258, please H4994 let me go H5927 up H5927 and bury H6912 my father H1; then I will return H7725.’” 6 And Pharaoh H6547 said H559, “Go H5927 up H5927 and bury H6912 your father H1, as he made you swear H7650.”
7 So Joseph H3130 went H5927 up H5927 to bury H6912 his father H1, and with him went H5927 up H5927 all H3605 the servants H5650 of Pharaoh H6547, the elders H2205 of his household H1004, and all H3605 the elders H2205 of the land H776 of Egypt H4714, 8 and all H3605 the household H1004 of Joseph H3130 and his brothers H251 and his father’s H1 household H1004; they left H5800 only H7534 their little H2945 ones H2945 and their flocks H6629 and their herds H1241 in the land H776 of Goshen H1657. 9 There also went H5927 up H5927 with him both H1571 chariots H7393 and horsemen H6571; and it was a very H3966 [fn]immense H3515 camp H4264. 10 And they came H935 to the [fn]threshing H1637 floor H1637 of Atad H329, which H834 is beyond H5676 the Jordan H3383, and they lamented H5594 there H8033 with a very H3966 great H1419 and [fn]immense H3515 lamentation H4553; and he [fn]observed H6213 seven H7651 days H3117 of mourning H60 for his father H1. 11 Now the inhabitants H3427 of the land H776, the Canaanites H3669, saw H7200 the mourning H60 at [fn]the threshing H1637 floor H1637 of Atad H329, and they said H559, “This H2088 is an [fn]immense H3515 [fn]mourning H60 for the Egyptians H4714.” Therefore H5921 H3651 it was named H7121 H8034 [fn]Abel-mizraim H67, which H834 is beyond H5676 the Jordan H3383.
Jacob’s Burial at Machpelah
12 Thus H3651 his sons H1121 did H6213 for him as he had commanded H6680 them. 13 Indeed, his sons H1121 carried H5375 him to the land H776 of Canaan H3667 and buried H6912 him in the cave H4631 of the field H7704 of Machpelah H4375 before H5921 H6440 Mamre H4471, which H834 Abraham H85 had bought H7069 along with the field H7704 for his possession as a burial H6913 site H272 from Ephron H6085 the Hittite H2850. 14 After H310 he had buried H6912 his father H1, Joseph H3130 returned H7725 to Egypt H4714, he and his brothers H251, and all H3605 who had gone H5927 up H5927 with him to bury H6912 his father H1.
15 Then Joseph’s H3130 brothers H251 saw H7200 that their father H1 was dead H4191, and they said H559, “What if Joseph H3130 bears H7852 a H7852 grudge H7852 against H7852 us and returns H7725 back to us all H3605 the evil H7451 which H834 we dealt H1580 against him!” 16 So they [fn]sent H6680 a message to Joseph H3130, saying H559, “Your father H1 commanded H6680 before H6440 he died H4194, saying H559, 17 ‘Thus H3541 you shall say H559 to Joseph H3130, “Please H4994 forgive H5375, I beg H577 you, the transgression H6588 of your brothers H251 and their sin H2403, for they dealt H1580 evil H7451 against you.”’ So now H6258, please H4994 forgive H5375 the transgression H6588 of the slaves H5650 of the God H430 of your father H1.” And Joseph H3130 wept H1058 when they spoke H1696 to him. 18 Then his brothers H251 also H1571 came H1980 and fell H5307 down H5307 before H6440 him and said H559, “Behold H2009, we are your slaves H5650.” 19 But Joseph H3130 said H559 to them, “Do not be H3372 afraid H3372, for am I in H8478 God’s H430 place H8478? 20 As for you, you meant H2803 evil H7451 against H5921 me, but God H430 meant H2803 it for good H2896 in order H4616 to do H6213 [fn]what has happened on this H2088 day H3117, to keep H2421 many H7227 people H5971 alive H2421. 21 So H6258 now, do not be H3372 afraid H3372; I will provide H3557 for you and your little H2945 ones H2945.” And he comforted H5162 them and spoke H1696 to their heart H3820.
The Death of Joseph
22 Now Joseph H3130 stayed H3427 in Egypt H4714, he and his father’s H1 household H1004, and Joseph H3130 lived H2421 110 H3967 H6235 years H8141.
23 And Joseph H3130 saw H7200 the third H8029 generation of Ephraim’s H669 sons H1121; also H1571 the sons H1121 of Machir H4353, the son H1121 of Manasseh H4519, were born H3205 on Joseph’s H3130 knees H1290. 24 And Joseph H3130 said H559 to his brothers H251, “I am about to die H4191, but God H430 will surely H6485 [fn]take H6485 care H6485 of H6485 you and bring H5927 you up H5927 from this H2088 land H776 to the land H776 which H834 He swore H7650 to Abraham H85, to Isaac H3327, and to Jacob H3290.” 25 Then Joseph H3130 made the sons H1121 of Israel H3478 swear H7650, saying H559, “God H430 will surely H6485 [fn]take H6485 care H6485 of H6485 you, and you shall carry H5927 my bones H6106 up H5927 from here H2088.” 26 So Joseph H3130 died H4191 at the age H1121 of 110 H3967 H6235 years H8141; and they embalmed H2590 him, and he was placed H7760 in a coffin H727 in Egypt H4714.
