Fasting as Yahweh Chooses

1 “Call ^H7121 out ^H7121 from your throat ^H1627, do not hold ^H2820 back ^H2820;

Raise ^H7311 your voice ^H6963 like a trumpet ^H7782,

And declare ^H5046 to My people ^H5971 their transgression ^H6588

And to the house ^H1004 of Jacob ^H3290 their sins ^H2403.

2 “Yet they seek ^H1875 Me day ^H3117 by day ^H3117 and find ^H2654 pleasure ^H2654 in knowing ^H1847 My ways ^H1870,

As a nation ^H1471 that has done ^H6213 righteousness ^H6666

And has not forsaken ^H5800 the judgment ^H4941 of their God ^H430.

They ask ^H7592 Me for righteous ^H6664 judgments ^H4941;

They find ^H2654 pleasure ^H2654 in the nearness ^H7132 of God ^H430.

3 ‘Why ^H4100 have we fasted ^H6684 and You do not see ^H7200?

Why have we afflicted ^H6031 our souls ^H5315 and You do not know ^H3045?’

Behold ^H2005, on the day ^H3117 of your fast ^H6685 you find ^H4672 your desire ^H2656,

And oppress ^H5065 all ^H3605 your workers ^H6092.

4 “Behold ^H2005, you fast ^H6684 for contention ^H7379 and quarreling ^H4683 and to strike ^H5221 with a wicked ^H7562 fist ^H106.

You do not fast ^H6684 like you do today ^H3117 to make ^H8085 your voice ^H6963 heard ^H8085 on high ^H4791.

5 “Is it a fast ^H6685 like this ^H2088 which I choose ^H977, a day ^H3117 for a man ^H120 to afflict ^H6031 himself ^H5315?

Is it for bowing ^H3721 [fn]one’s head ^H7218 like a reed ^H100

And for spreading ^H3331 out ^H3331 sackcloth ^H8242 and ashes ^H665 as ^H3331 a ^H3331 bed ^H3331?

Will you call ^H7121 this ^H2088 a fast ^H6685, even an acceptable ^H7522 day ^H3117 to Yahweh ^H3068?

6 “Is this ^H2088 not the fast ^H6685 which I choose ^H977,

To loosen ^H6605 the bonds ^H2784 of wickedness ^H7562,

To release ^H5425 the bands ^H92 of [fn]the yoke ^H4133,

And to let ^H7971 the oppressed ^H7533 go ^H7971 free ^H2670

And break ^H5423 every ^H3605 [fn]yoke ^H4133?

7 “Is it not to divide ^H6536 your bread ^H3899 [fn]with the hungry ^H7457

And bring ^H935 the afflicted ^H6041 homeless ^H4788 into the house ^H1004;

When ^H3588 you see ^H7200 the naked ^H6174, you cover ^H3680 him;

And not to hide ^H5956 yourself from your own flesh ^H1320?

8 “Then ^H227 your light ^H216 will break ^H1234 out ^H1234 like the dawn ^H7837,

And your recovery ^H724 will speedily ^H4120 spring ^H6779 forth ^H6779;

And your righteousness ^H6664 will go ^H1980 before ^H6440 you;

The glory ^H3519 of Yahweh ^H3068 will be your rear ^H622 guard ^H622.

9 “Then ^H227 you will call ^H7121, and Yahweh ^H3068 will answer ^H6030;

You will cry ^H7768, and He will say ^H559, ‘Here ^H2009 I am.’

If ^H518 you remove ^H5493 the [fn]yoke ^H4133 from your midst ^H8432,

The [fn]pointing ^H7971 of the finger ^H676 and speaking ^H1696 wickedness ^H205,

10 And if you [fn]offer ^H6329 your soul ^H5315 to the hungry ^H7457

And satisfy ^H7646 the soul ^H5315 of the afflicted ^H6031,

Then your light ^H216 will rise ^H2224 in darkness ^H2822

And your thick ^H653 darkness ^H653 will become like midday ^H6672.

11 “And Yahweh ^H3068 will continually ^H8548 guide ^H5148 you,

And satisfy ^H7646 your soul ^H5315 in scorched ^H6710 places ^H6710,

And fortify ^H2502 your bones ^H6106;

And you will be like a watered ^H7302 garden ^H1588,

And like a spring ^H4161 of water ^H4325 whose ^H834 waters ^H4325 do not [fn]fail ^H3576.

12 “Those from among you will rebuild ^H1129 the ancient ^H5769 waste ^H2723 places ^H2723;

You will raise ^H6965 up ^H6965 the foundations ^H4144 of past generation ^H1755 upon generation ^H1755;

And you will be called ^H7121 the repairer ^H1443 of the breach ^H6556,

The restorer ^H7725 of the paths ^H5410 for one to inhabit ^H3427.

Keeping the Sabbath

13 “If ^H518 because ^H4480 of the sabbath ^H7676, you turn ^H7725 your foot ^H7272

From doing ^H6213 your own desire ^H2656 on My holy ^H6944 day ^H3117,

And call ^H7121 the sabbath ^H7676 a delight ^H6027, the holy ^H6918 day of Yahweh ^H3068 honorable ^H3513,

And honor ^H3513 it, by not doing ^H6213 your own ways ^H1870,

By not finding ^H4672 your own desire ^H2656

And speaking ^H1696 your own word ^H1697,

14 Then ^H227 you will take ^H6026 delight ^H6026 in Yahweh ^H3068,

And I will make you ride ^H7392 on the heights ^H1116 of the earth ^H776;

And I will feed ^H398 you with the inheritance ^H5159 of Jacob ^H3290 your father ^H1,

For the mouth ^H6310 of Yahweh ^H3068 has spoken ^H1696.”
