Word Against Babylon

1 The word ^H1697 which ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 spoke ^H1696 concerning ^H413 Babylon ^H894, the land ^H776 of the Chaldeans ^H3778, by the hand ^H3027 of Jeremiah ^H3414 the prophet ^H5030:

2 “Declare ^H5046 and make it heard ^H8085 among the nations ^H1471.

Make it heard ^H8085 and lift ^H5375 up ^H5375 a standard ^H5251.

Do not conceal ^H3582 it but say ^H559,

‘Babylon ^H894 has been captured ^H3920;

Bel ^H1078 has been put ^H954 to ^H954 shame ^H954; [fn]Marduk ^H4781 has been ^H2865 [fn]shattered ^H2865;

Her images ^H6091 have been put ^H954 to ^H954 shame ^H954; her idols ^H1544 have been ^H2865 shattered ^H2865.’

3 For a nation ^H1471 has come ^H5927 up ^H5927 against ^H5921 her out of the north ^H6828; it will make ^H7896 her land ^H776 an object ^H8047 of ^H8047 horror ^H8047, and there will be no ^H3808 inhabitant ^H3427 in it. Both ^H4480 man ^H120 and beast ^H929 have wandered ^H5110 off ^H5110; they have gone ^H1980 away!

8 “Wander ^H5110 away ^H5110 from the midst ^H8432 of Babylon ^H894

And [fn]go ^H3318 forth ^H3318 from the land ^H776 of the Chaldeans ^H3778;

Be also like male ^H6260 goats ^H6260 [fn]at the head ^H6440 of the flock ^H6629.

9 “For behold ^H2009, I am going to arouse ^H5782 and bring ^H5927 up ^H5927 against ^H5921 Babylon ^H894

An assembly ^H6951 of great ^H1419 nations ^H1471 from the land ^H776 of the north ^H6828,

And they will arrange ^H6186 their battle ^H6186 lines ^H6186 against her;

From there ^H8033 she will be taken ^H3920 captive ^H3920.

Their arrows ^H2671 will be like [fn]a warrior ^H1368 who makes one childless ^H7919

Who does not return ^H7725 empty-handed ^H7387.

10 “[fn]Chaldea ^H3778 will become ^H1961 spoil ^H7998;

All ^H3605 who take ^H7997 her spoil ^H7997 will have ^H7646 enough ^H7646,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068.

11 “Because ^H3588 you are ^H8055 glad ^H8055, because ^H3588 you exult ^H5937,

O you who plunder ^H8154 My inheritance ^H5159,

12 Your mother ^H517 [fn]will be ^H954 greatly ^H3966 ashamed ^H954;

Behold ^H2009, she will be the least ^H319 of the nations ^H1471,

A wilderness ^H4057, a parched ^H6723 land ^H6723, and a desert ^H6160.

13 “Because ^H4480 of the wrath ^H7110 of Yahweh ^H3068 she will not be inhabited ^H3427,

But she will be completely ^H3605 desolate ^H8077;

Everyone ^H3605 who passes ^H5674 by Babylon ^H894 will be in desolation ^H8074

And will hiss ^H8319 because ^H5921 of all ^H3605 her wounds ^H4347.

14 “Arrange ^H6186 your battle ^H6186 lines ^H6186 against ^H5921 Babylon ^H894 on every ^H5439 side ^H5439,

Shoot ^H3034 at her, do not be sparing ^H2550 with your arrows ^H2671,

For this ^H1931 is the vengeance ^H5360 of Yahweh ^H3068:

Take ^H5358 vengeance ^H5358 on her;

16 “Cut ^H3772 off ^H3772 the sower ^H2232 from Babylon ^H894

And the one who seizes ^H8610 the sickle ^H4038 at the time ^H6256 of harvest ^H7105;

From before ^H6440 [fn]the sword ^H2719 of the oppressor ^H3238

They will each ^H376 turn ^H6437 back ^H6437 to his own people ^H5971,

And they will each ^H376 flee ^H5127 to his own land ^H776.

17 “Israel ^H3478 is a scattered ^H6340 [fn]flock ^H7716; the lions ^H738 have banished ^H5080 them away ^H5080. 25 Yahweh ^H3068 has opened ^H6605 His armory ^H214

And has brought ^H3318 forth ^H3318 the weapons ^H3627 of His indignation ^H2195,

For it is a work ^H4399 of Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068 of hosts ^H6635

In the land ^H776 of the Chaldeans ^H3778.

26 Come ^H935 to her from the [fn]farthest ^H7093 border ^H7093;

Open ^H6605 up ^H6605 her barns ^H3965;

Pile ^H5549 her up ^H5549 like ^H3644 heaps ^H6194,

And [fn]devote ^H2763 her to destruction ^H2763;

Let nothing ^H408 of her remain ^H7611.

27 Put ^H2717 all ^H3605 her young ^H6499 bulls ^H6499 to ^H2717 the ^H2717 sword ^H2717;

Let them go ^H3381 down ^H3381 to the slaughter ^H2874!

Woe ^H1945 be upon them, for their day ^H3117 has come ^H935,

The time ^H6256 of their punishment ^H6486.

28 There is a sound ^H6963 of those who flee ^H5127 and escape ^H6412 from the land ^H776 of Babylon ^H894,

29 “Summon ^H8085 [fn]many ^H7227 against ^H413 Babylon ^H894,

Encamp ^H2583 against ^H5921 her on every ^H5439 side ^H5439,

Let there be no ^H408 escape ^H6413[fn].

31 “Behold ^H2009, I am against ^H413 you, O [fn]arrogant ^H2087 one,”

Declares ^H5002 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068 of hosts ^H6635,

“For your day ^H3117 has come ^H935,

The time ^H6256 [fn]when I will punish ^H6485 you.

32 “The [fn]arrogant ^H2087 one will stumble ^H3782 and fall ^H5307

With no ^H369 one ^H369 to raise ^H6965 him up ^H6965;

And I will set ^H3341 fire ^H784 to his cities ^H5892,

“The sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 are oppressed ^H6231,

35 “A sword ^H2719 against ^H5921 the Chaldeans ^H3778,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068,

“And against ^H413 the inhabitants ^H3427 of Babylon ^H894

And against ^H413 her officials ^H8269 and her wise ^H2450 men ^H2450!

36 “A sword ^H2719 against ^H413 the oracle ^H907 priests ^H907, and they will become ^H2973 fools ^H2973!

A sword ^H2719 against ^H413 her mighty ^H1368 men ^H1368, and they will be [fn]shattered ^H2865!

37 “A sword ^H2719 against ^H413 [fn]their horses ^H5483 and against ^H413 [fn]their chariots ^H7393

And against ^H413 all ^H3605 the [fn]foreigners ^H6154 who ^H834 are in the midst ^H8432 of her,

And they will become ^H1961 women ^H802!

A sword ^H2719 against ^H413 her treasures ^H214, and they will be plundered ^H962!

38 “A [fn]drought ^H2721 on her waters ^H4325, and they will be dried ^H3001 up ^H3001!

For it is a land ^H776 of graven ^H6456 images ^H6456,

And they are mad ^H1984 over terrifying ^H367 idols.

39 “Therefore ^H3651 the desert ^H6728 creatures ^H6728 will live ^H3427 there along ^H854 with the jackals ^H338;

The ostriches ^H3284 also will live ^H3427 in it,

And it will never ^H3808 again ^H5750 be lived ^H3427 in

Or dwelt ^H7931 in ^H7931 from generation ^H1755 to ^H1755 generation ^H1755.

40 “As when God ^H430 overthrew ^H4114 Sodom ^H5467

And Gomorrah ^H6017 with its neighbors ^H7934,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068,

Will be aroused ^H5782 from the remote ^H3411 parts ^H3411 of the earth ^H776.

42 “They seize ^H2388 their bow ^H7198 and [fn]javelin ^H3591;

They are cruel ^H394 and have ^H7355 no ^H3808 compassion ^H7355.

Their voice ^H6963 roars ^H1993 like the sea ^H3220;

And they ride ^H7392 on horses ^H5483,

Arranged ^H6186 like a man ^H376 for the battle ^H4421

Against ^H5921 you, O daughter ^H1323 of Babylon ^H894.

43 “The king ^H4428 of Babylon ^H894 has heard ^H8085 the report ^H8088 about them,

And his hands ^H3027 hang ^H7503 limp ^H7503;

Distress ^H6869 has taken ^H2388 hold ^H2388 of him,

Agony ^H2427 like a woman in ^H3205 childbirth ^H3205.

44 “Behold ^H2009, one will come ^H5927 up ^H5927 like a lion ^H738 from the [fn]thicket ^H1347 of the Jordan ^H3383 to an enduring ^H386 pasture ^H5116; for in an instant ^H7280 I will make them run ^H7323 away ^H4480 from it, and whoever ^H4310 is chosen ^H977 I will appoint ^H6485 over ^H413 it.
