Zophar Says the Joy of the Wicked Is Short

1 Then Zophar ^H6691 the Naamathite ^H5284 answered ^H6030 and said ^H559,

2 “Therefore ^H3651 my disquieting ^H5587 thoughts ^H5587 make me [fn]respond ^H7725,

Even because ^H5668 of my haste ^H2363 within me.

3 “I listened ^H8085 to the discipline ^H4148 which dishonors ^H3639 me,

And the spirit ^H7307 of my understanding ^H998 makes me answer ^H6030.

4 “Do you know ^H3045 this ^H2088 from of old ^H5703,

From the establishment ^H7760 of man ^H120 on earth ^H776,

5 That the shouts ^H7445 of joy ^H7445 of the wicked ^H7563 are short ^H4480 H7138,

And the gladness ^H8057 of the godless ^H2611 momentary ^H5704 H7281?

6 “Though ^H518 his loftiness ^H7863 goes ^H5927 up ^H5927 to the heavens ^H8064,

And his head ^H7218 touches ^H5060 the clouds ^H5645,

7 He perishes ^H6 forever ^H5331 like his refuse ^H1561;

Those who have seen ^H7200 him will say ^H559, ‘Where ^H335 is he?’

8 “He flies ^H5774 away ^H5774 like a dream ^H2472, and they cannot ^H3808 find ^H4672 him;

Even like a vision ^H2384 of the night ^H3915 he is chased ^H5074 away ^H5074.

And cannot ^H3808 swallow ^H1104 it;

As to the wealth ^H2428 of his trading ^H8545,

He cannot ^H3808 even enjoy ^H5965 it.

19 “For he has crushed ^H7533 and forsaken ^H5800 the poor ^H1800;

20 “Because ^H3588 he knew ^H3045 no ^H3808 ease ^H7961 within his belly ^H990,

In his covetousness ^H2530, he does not let anything escape ^H4422.

21 “Nothing ^H369 remains ^H8300 [fn]for him to devour ^H398;

Therefore ^H5921 H3651 his prosperity ^H2898 does not endure ^H2342.

22 “In the fullness ^H4390 of his plenty ^H5607 he will be confined ^H6887;

The hand ^H3027 of everyone ^H3605 who ^H6001 is troubled ^H6001 will come ^H935 against him.

23 “So it will be that he fills ^H4390 his belly ^H990,

And God will send ^H7971 His burning ^H2740 anger ^H639 on him

And will rain ^H4305 it on him [fn]while he is eating ^H3894.

24 “He may flee ^H1272 from the iron ^H1270 weapon ^H5402,

But the bronze ^H5154 bow ^H7198 will pierce ^H2498 him.

25 “It is drawn ^H8025 forth ^H8025 and comes ^H3318 out ^H3318 of his back ^H1465,

Even the glittering ^H1300 point ^H1300 from his gall ^H4845;

Bouts ^H367 of dread ^H367 come ^H1980 upon him.

26 Complete ^H3605 darkness ^H2822 is held ^H2934 in ^H2934 reserve ^H2934 for his treasures ^H6845;

A fire ^H784 unfanned ^H3808 H5301 will devour ^H398 him;

It will consume ^H7462 the survivor ^H8300 in his tent ^H168.

27 “The heavens ^H8064 will reveal ^H1540 his iniquity ^H5771,

And the earth ^H776 will rise ^H6965 up ^H6965 against him.

28 “The increase ^H2981 of his house ^H1004 will depart ^H1540;

His possessions will flow ^H5064 away in the day ^H3117 of His anger ^H639.

29 “This ^H2088 is the wicked ^H7563 man’s ^H120 portion ^H2506 from God ^H430,

Even the inheritance ^H5159 decreed ^H561 to him by God ^H410.”
