The Deity of Jesus Christ

1 In the beginning ^G746 was the Word ^G3056, and the Word ^G3056 was with God ^G2316, and the Word ^G3056 was God ^G2316.

2 [fn]He was in the beginning ^G746 with God ^G2316. 3 All ^G3956 things ^G3956 came ^G1096 into ^G1096 being ^G1096 through ^G1223 Him, and apart ^G5565 from Him nothing ^G3761 G1520 came ^G1096 into ^G1096 being ^G1096 that has come ^G1096 into ^G1096 being ^G1096. 4 In Him was life ^G2222, and the life ^G2222 was the Light ^G5457 of men ^G444. 5 And the Light ^G5457 shines ^G5316 in the darkness ^G4653, and the darkness ^G4653 did not overtake ^G2638 it.

The Witness of John the Baptist

6 There was ^G1096 a man ^G444 having been sent ^G649 from God ^G2316, whose ^G846 name ^G3686 was [fn]John ^G2491.

7 [fn]He came ^G2064 [fn]as a witness ^G3141, to bear ^G3140 witness ^G3140 about ^G4012 the Light ^G5457, so ^G2443 that all ^G3956 might believe ^G4100 through ^G1223 him. 8 [fn]He was not the Light ^G5457, but he came to bear ^G3140 witness ^G3140 about ^G4012 the Light ^G5457.

9 There was the true ^G228 Light ^G5457 [fn]which ^G3739, coming ^G2064 into the world ^G2889, enlightens ^G5461 everyone ^G3956. 10 He was in the world ^G2889, and the world ^G2889 [fn]was made ^G1096 through ^G1223 Him, and the world ^G2889 did not know ^G1097 Him. 11 He came ^G2064 to what was His [fn]own ^G2398, and those ^G3588 who were His own ^G2398 did not receive ^G3880 Him. 12 But as many ^G3745 as received ^G2983 Him, to them He gave ^G1325 the right ^G1849 to become ^G1096 children ^G5043 of God ^G2316, even to those ^G3588 who believe ^G4100 in His name ^G3686, 13 who ^G3739 were [fn]born ^G1080, not of [fn]blood ^G129 nor ^G3761 of the will ^G2307 of the flesh ^G4561 nor ^G3761 of the will ^G2307 of man ^G435, but of God ^G2316.

The Word Became Flesh

14 And the Word ^G3056 became ^G1096 flesh ^G4561, and [fn]dwelt ^G4637 among ^G1722 us, and we beheld ^G2300 His glory ^G1391, glory ^G1391 as of the [fn]only ^G3439 begotten ^G3439 from the Father ^G3962, full ^G4134 of grace ^G5485 and truth ^G225.

15 John ^G2491 *bore witness ^G3140 about ^G4012 Him and cried ^G2896 out ^G2896, saying ^G3004, “This ^G3778 was He of whom ^G3739 I said ^G3004, ‘He who comes ^G2064 after ^G3694 me [fn]has ^G1096 been ^G1096 ahead ^G1715 of me ^G3450, for He existed ^G1510 before ^G4413 me.’” 16 For of His fullness ^G4138 [fn]we have all ^G3956 received ^G2983, and grace ^G5485 [fn]upon grace ^G5485. 17 For the Law ^G3551 was given ^G1325 through ^G1223 Moses ^G3475; grace ^G5485 and truth ^G225 came ^G1096 through ^G1223 Jesus ^G2424 Christ ^G5547. 18 No ^G3762 one ^G3762 has seen ^G3708 God ^G2316 at any ^G4455 time ^G4455; the only ^G3439 begotten ^G3439 God ^G2316 who is in the bosom ^G2859 of the Father ^G3962, He has explained ^G1834 Him.

A Voice in the Wilderness

19 And this ^G3778 is the witness ^G3141 of John ^G2491, when ^G3753 the [fn]Jews ^G2453 sent ^G649 to him priests ^G2409 and Levites ^G3019 from Jerusalem ^G2414 to ask ^G2065 him, “Who ^G5101 are you?”

20 And he confessed ^G3670 and did not deny ^G720, but confessed ^G3670, “I am ^G1510 not the [fn]Christ ^G5547.” 21 And they asked ^G2065 him, “What ^G5101 then ^G3767? Are you Elijah ^G2243?” And he *said ^G3004, “I am ^G1510 not.” “Are you the Prophet ^G4396?” And he answered ^G611, “No ^G3756.” 22 Therefore ^G3767, they said ^G3004 to him, “Who ^G5101 are you, so ^G2443 that we may give ^G1325 an answer ^G612 to those ^G3588 who sent ^G3992 us? What ^G5101 do you say ^G3004 about ^G4012 yourself ^G4572?” 23 He said ^G5346, “I am A VOICE ^G5456 OF ONE CRYING ^G994 IN THE WILDERNESS ^G2048, ‘MAKE ^G2116 STRAIGHT ^G2116 THE WAY ^G3598 OF THE [fn]LORD ^G2962,’ as Isaiah ^G2268 the prophet ^G4396 said ^G3004.”

24 Now ^G2532 they had been ^G1510 sent ^G649 from the Pharisees ^G5330. 25 And they asked ^G2065 him, and said ^G3004 to him, “Why ^G5101 then ^G3767 are you baptizing ^G907, if ^G1487 you are not the [fn]Christ ^G5547, nor ^G3761 Elijah ^G2243, nor ^G3761 the Prophet ^G4396?” 26 John ^G2491 answered ^G611 them, saying ^G3004, “I baptize ^G907 with water ^G5204, but among ^G3319 you stands ^G4739 One whom ^G3739 you do not know ^G6063. 27 This One is He who comes ^G2064 after ^G3694 me, of whom I am ^G1510 not worthy ^G514 to untie ^G3089 the strap ^G2438 of His ^G3739 sandal ^G5266.” 28 These ^G3778 things ^G3778 took ^G1096 place ^G1096 in Bethany ^G963 beyond ^G4008 the Jordan ^G2446, where ^G3699 John ^G2491 was baptizing ^G907.

29 On the next ^G1887 day ^G1887, he *saw ^G991 Jesus ^G2424 coming ^G2064 to him and *said ^G3004, “Behold ^G2396, the Lamb ^G286 of God ^G2316 who takes ^G142 away ^G142 the sin ^G266 of the world ^G2889! 30 This ^G3778 is He of ^G5228 whom ^G3739 I said ^G3004, ‘After ^G3694 me comes ^G2064 a man ^G435 who ^G3739 has been ^G1096 [fn]ahead ^G1715 of me ^G3450, for He existed ^G1510 before ^G4413 me.’ 31 I did not know ^G6063 [fn]Him, but so ^G2443 that He might be manifested ^G5319 to Israel ^G2474, I came ^G2064 baptizing ^G907 with water ^G5204.” 32 And John ^G2491 bore witness ^G3140 saying ^G3004, “I have beheld ^G2300 the Spirit ^G4151 descending ^G2597 as a dove ^G4058 out ^G2597 of heaven ^G3772, and He abided ^G3306 on Him. 33 And I did not know ^G6063 [fn]Him, but He who sent ^G3992 me to baptize ^G907 with water ^G5204 said ^G3004 to me, ‘The One upon whom ^G3739 you see ^G3708 the Spirit ^G4151 descending ^G2597 and abiding ^G3306 on Him, this ^G3778 is the One who baptizes ^G907 with the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151.’ 34 And I myself ^G1473 have seen ^G3708, and have borne witness ^G3140 that this ^G3778 is the Son ^G5207 of God ^G2316.”

Behold, the Lamb of God

35 On the next ^G1887 day ^G1887, John ^G2491 again ^G3825 was standing ^G2476 [fn]with two ^G1417 of his disciples ^G3101,

36 and he looked ^G1689 at ^G1689 Jesus ^G2424 as He walked ^G4043, and *said ^G3004, “Behold ^G2396, the Lamb ^G286 of God ^G2316!” 37 And the two ^G1417 disciples ^G3101 heard ^G191 him speak ^G2980 and followed ^G190 Jesus ^G2424. 38 And when Jesus ^G2424 turned ^G4762 and noticed ^G2300 them following ^G190, He *said ^G3004 to them, “What ^G5101 do you seek ^G2212?” They said ^G3004 to Him, “Rabbi ^G4461 (which ^G3739 translated ^G3177 means ^G3004 Teacher ^G1320), where ^G4226 are You staying ^G3306?” 39 He *said ^G3004 to them, “Come ^G2064, and you will see ^G3708.” So ^G3767 they came ^G2064 and saw ^G3708 where ^G4226 He was staying ^G3306; and they stayed ^G3306 with Him that day ^G2250. It was about ^G5613 the [fn]tenth ^G1182 hour ^G5610. 40 One ^G1520 of the two ^G1417 who heard ^G191 John ^G2491 speak and followed ^G190 Him, was Andrew ^G406, Simon ^G4613 Peter’s ^G4074 brother ^G80. 41 He first ^G4413 *found ^G2147 his own ^G2398 brother ^G80 Simon ^G4613 and *said ^G3004 to him, “We have found ^G2147 the Messiah ^G3323” (which ^G3739 translated ^G3177 means ^G1510 [fn]Christ ^G5547). 42 He brought ^G71 him to Jesus ^G2424. When Jesus ^G2424 looked ^G1689 at ^G1689 him, He said ^G3004, “You are Simon ^G4613 the son ^G5207 of John ^G2491; you shall be called ^G2564 Cephas ^G2786” (which ^G3739 is translated ^G2059 [fn]Peter ^G4074).

43 On the next ^G1887 day ^G1887, He desired ^G2309 to go ^G1831 into Galilee ^G1056, and He *found ^G2147 Philip ^G5376. And Jesus ^G2424 *said ^G3004 to him, “Follow ^G190 Me.” 44 Now ^G1161 Philip ^G5376 was from Bethsaida ^G966, the city ^G4172 of Andrew ^G406 and Peter ^G4074. 45 Philip ^G5376 *found ^G2147 Nathanael ^G3482 and *said ^G3004 to him, “We have found ^G2147 Him of whom ^G3739 Moses ^G3475 in the Law ^G3551 and also the Prophets ^G4396 wrote ^G1125—Jesus ^G2424 of Nazareth ^G3478, the son ^G5207 of Joseph ^G2501.” 46 And Nathanael ^G3482 said ^G3004 to him, “Can ^G1410 any ^G5100 good ^G18 thing ^G18 come ^G1510 out ^G1510 of Nazareth ^G3478?” Philip ^G5376 *said ^G3004 to him, “Come ^G2064 and see ^G3708.” 47 Jesus ^G2424 saw ^G3708 Nathanael ^G3482 coming ^G2064 to Him, and *said ^G3004 about him, “Behold ^G2396, truly ^G230 an Israelite ^G2475 in whom ^G3739 there ^G1510 is no ^G3756 deceit ^G1388!” 48 Nathanael ^G3482 *said ^G3004 to Him, “From where ^G4159 do You know ^G1097 me?” Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to him, “Before ^G4253 Philip ^G5376 called ^G5455 you, when you were under ^G5259 the fig ^G4808 tree ^G4808, I saw ^G3708 you.” 49 Nathanael ^G3482 answered ^G611 Him, “Rabbi ^G4461, You are the Son ^G5207 of God ^G2316; You are the King ^G935 of Israel ^G2474.” 50 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to him, “Because ^G3754 I said ^G3004 to you that I saw ^G3708 you under ^G5270 the fig ^G4808 tree ^G4808, do you believe ^G4100? You will see ^G3708 greater ^G3173 things ^G3173 than these ^G3778.” 51 And He *said ^G3004 to him, “Truly ^G281, truly ^G281, I say ^G3004 to you, you will see ^G3708 THE HEAVENS ^G3772 OPENED ^G455 AND THE ANGELS ^G32 OF GOD ^G2316 ASCENDING ^G305 AND DESCENDING ^G2597 on the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444.”
