Mary Anoints Jesus with Costly Perfume

1 Jesus ^G2424, therefore ^G3767, six ^G1803 days ^G2250 before ^G4253 the Passover ^G3957, came ^G2064 to Bethany ^G963 where ^G3699 Lazarus ^G2976 was, whom ^G3739 Jesus ^G2424 had raised ^G1453 from the dead ^G3498.

2 So ^G3767 they made ^G4160 Him a supper ^G1173 there ^G1563, and Martha ^G3136 was serving ^G1247; and Lazarus ^G2976 was one ^G1520 of those ^G3588 reclining ^G345 at the table with Him. 3 Mary ^G3137 then ^G3767 took ^G2983 a [fn]litra ^G3046 of perfume ^G3464 of very ^G4186 costly ^G4186 pure ^G4101 nard ^G3487, and anointed ^G218 the feet ^G4228 of Jesus ^G2424 and wiped ^G1591 His feet ^G4228 with her hair ^G2359; and the house ^G3614 was filled ^G4137 with the fragrance ^G3744 of the perfume ^G3464. 4 But Judas ^G2455 Iscariot ^G2469, one ^G1520 of His disciples ^G3101, who was going ^G3195 to [fn]betray ^G3860 Him, *said ^G3004, 5 “Why ^G1223 G5101 was this ^G3778 perfume ^G3464 not sold ^G4097 for [fn]three ^G5145 hundred ^G5145 denarii ^G1220 and given ^G1325 to the poor ^G4434?” 6 Now ^G1161 he said ^G3004 this ^G3778, not because ^G3754 he was concerned ^G3199 about ^G4012 the poor ^G4434, but because ^G3754 he was a thief ^G2812, and as he had ^G2192 the money ^G1101 box ^G1101, he used to take ^G941 from what was put ^G906 into it. 7 Therefore ^G3767 Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004, “Let ^G863 her alone ^G863, so ^G2443 that she may keep ^G5083 it for the day ^G2250 of My burial ^G1780. 8 For you always ^G3842 have ^G2192 the poor ^G4434 with you, but you do not always ^G3842 have ^G2192 Me.”

9 Then ^G3767 the large ^G4183 crowd ^G3793 from the Jews ^G2453 learned ^G1097 that He was there ^G1563. The Triumphal Entry

12 On the next ^G1887 day ^G1887 the large ^G4183 crowd ^G3793 who had come ^G2064 to the feast ^G1859, when they heard ^G191 that Jesus ^G2424 was coming ^G2064 to Jerusalem ^G2414,

13 took ^G2983 the branches ^G902 of the palm ^G5404 trees ^G5404 and went ^G1831 out ^G1831 to meet ^G5222 Him, and began to shout ^G2905, “Hosanna ^G5614! BLESSED ^G2127 IS HE WHO COMES ^G2064 IN THE NAME ^G3686 OF THE [fn]LORD ^G2962, even ^G2532 the King ^G935 of Israel ^G2474.” 14 And Jesus ^G2424, finding ^G2147 a young ^G3678 donkey ^G3678, sat ^G2523 on it; as it is written ^G1125, 15 “FEAR ^G5399 NOT, DAUGHTER ^G2364 OF ZION ^G4622; BEHOLD ^G2400, YOUR KING ^G935 IS COMING ^G2064, SEATED ^G2521 ON A DONKEY’S ^G3688 COLT ^G4454.” 16 These ^G3778 things ^G3778 His disciples ^G3101 did not understand ^G1097 at the first ^G4413; but when ^G3753 Jesus ^G2424 was glorified ^G1392, then ^G5119 they remembered ^G3403 that these ^G3778 things ^G3778 were written ^G1125 about Him, and that they had done ^G4160 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 to Him. 17 So ^G3767 the crowd ^G3793, who was with Him when ^G3753 He called ^G5455 Lazarus ^G2976 out of the tomb ^G3419 and raised ^G1453 him from the dead ^G3498, continued to bear ^G3140 witness ^G3140 about Him. 18 For this ^G3778 reason ^G1223 also ^G2532 the crowd ^G3793 went ^G5221 and met ^G5221 Him, because ^G3754 they heard ^G191 that He had done ^G4160 this ^G3778 [fn]sign ^G4592. 19 So ^G3767 the Pharisees ^G5330 said ^G3004 to one ^G1438 another ^G1438, “You see ^G2334 that you are gaining ^G5623 nothing ^G3762; look ^G2396, the world ^G2889 has gone ^G565 after ^G3694 Him.”

Some Greeks Seek Jesus

20 Now ^G1161 there ^G1563 were some ^G5100 Greeks ^G1672 among ^G1537 those ^G3588 who were going ^G305 up ^G305 to worship ^G4352 at the feast ^G1859;

21 these ^G3778 then ^G3767 came ^G4334 to Philip ^G5376, who ^G3588 was from Bethsaida ^G966 of Galilee ^G1056, and began to ask ^G2065 him, saying ^G3004, “Sir ^G2962, we wish ^G2309 to see ^G3708 Jesus ^G2424.” 22 Philip ^G5376 *came ^G2064 and *told ^G3004 Andrew ^G406; Andrew ^G406 and Philip ^G5376 *came ^G2064 and *told ^G3004 Jesus ^G2424. 23 And Jesus ^G2424 *answered ^G611 them, saying ^G3004, “The hour ^G5610 has come ^G2064 for the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 to be glorified ^G1392. 24 Truly ^G281, truly ^G281, I say ^G3004 to you, unless ^G1437 G3361 a grain ^G2848 of wheat ^G4621 falls ^G4098 into the earth ^G1093 and dies ^G599, it remains ^G3306 alone ^G3441; but if ^G1437 it dies ^G599, it bears ^G5342 much ^G4183 fruit ^G2590. 25 He who loves ^G5368 his [fn]life ^G5590 loses ^G622 it, and he who hates ^G3404 his [fn]life ^G5590 in this ^G3778 world ^G2889 will keep ^G5442 it to life ^G2222 eternal ^G166. 26 If ^G1437 anyone ^G5100 [fn]serves ^G1247 Me, he must follow ^G190 Me; and where ^G3699 I am ^G1510, there ^G1563 My servant ^G1249 will be also ^G2532; if ^G1437 anyone ^G5100 [fn]serves ^G1247 Me, the Father ^G3962 will honor ^G5091 him.

The Son of Man Must Be Lifted Up

27 “Now ^G3568 MY SOUL ^G5590 HAS BECOME DISMAYED ^G5015; and what ^G5101 shall I say ^G3004, ‘Father ^G3962, SAVE ^G4982 ME from this ^G3778 hour ^G5610’? But for this ^G3778 purpose I came ^G2064 to this ^G3778 hour ^G5610.

28 Father ^G3962, glorify ^G1392 Your name ^G3686.” Then ^G3767 a voice ^G5456 came ^G2064 from heaven ^G3772: “I have both ^G2532 glorified ^G1392 it, and will glorify ^G1392 it again ^G3825.” 29 So ^G3767 the crowd ^G3793 of people who stood ^G2476 by and heard ^G191 it were saying ^G3004 that it had thundered ^G1027 G1096; others ^G243 were saying ^G3004, “An angel ^G32 has spoken ^G2980 to Him.” 30 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004, “This ^G3778 voice ^G5456 has not come ^G1096 for My sake ^G1223, but for your sake ^G1223. 31 Now ^G3568 judgment ^G2920 is upon this ^G3778 world ^G2889; now ^G3568 the ruler ^G758 of this ^G3778 world ^G2889 will be cast ^G1544 out ^G1544. 32 And I, if ^G1437 I am lifted ^G5312 up ^G5312 from the earth ^G1093, will draw ^G1670 all ^G3956 men ^G3956 to Myself ^G1683.” 33 But He was saying ^G3004 this ^G3778 to indicate ^G4591 the kind ^G4169 of death ^G2288 by which ^G4169 He was ^G3195 about ^G3195 to ^G3195 die ^G599. 34 The crowd ^G3793 then ^G3767 answered ^G611 Him, “We have heard ^G191 from the Law ^G3551 that the [fn]Christ ^G5547 is to remain ^G3306 forever ^G165; and how ^G4459 do You say ^G3004, ‘The Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 must ^G1163 be lifted ^G5312 up’? Who ^G5101 is this ^G3778 Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444?” 35 So ^G3767 Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to them, “For a little ^G3398 while ^G5550 longer ^G2089 the Light ^G5457 is among ^G1722 you. Walk ^G4043 while ^G5613 you have ^G2192 the Light ^G5457, so ^G2443 that darkness ^G4653 will not overtake ^G2638 you; he who walks ^G4043 in the darkness ^G4653 does not know ^G6063 where ^G4226 he goes ^G5217. 36 While ^G5613 you have ^G2192 the Light ^G5457, believe ^G4100 in the Light ^G5457, so ^G2443 that you may become ^G1096 sons ^G5207 of Light ^G5457.”

These ^G3778 things ^G3778 Jesus ^G2424 spoke ^G2980, and He went ^G565 away ^G565 and [fn]hid ^G2928 Himself from them. 37 But though He had done ^G4160 so ^G5118 many ^G5118 [fn]signs ^G4592 before ^G1715 them, they still were not believing ^G4100 in Him, 38 so that the word ^G3056 of Isaiah ^G2268 the prophet ^G4396 might be fulfilled ^G4137, which ^G3739 he spoke ^G3004: “[fn]LORD ^G2962, WHO ^G5101 HAS BELIEVED ^G4100 OUR REPORT ^G189? AND TO WHOM ^G5101 HAS THE ARM ^G1023 OF THE [fn]LORD ^G2962 BEEN REVEALED ^G601?” 39 For this ^G3778 reason ^G1223 they could ^G1410 not believe ^G4100, for Isaiah ^G2268 said ^G3004 again ^G3825, 40 “HE HAS BLINDED ^G5186 THEIR EYES ^G3788 AND HE HARDENED ^G4456 THEIR HEART ^G2588, LEST ^G2443 G3361 THEY SEE ^G3708 WITH THEIR EYES ^G3788 AND UNDERSTAND ^G3539 WITH THEIR HEART ^G2588, AND RETURN ^G4762 AND I HEAL ^G2390 THEM.” 41 These ^G3778 things ^G3778 Isaiah ^G2268 said ^G3004 because ^G3754 he saw ^G3708 His glory ^G1391, and he spoke ^G2980 about Him. 42 Nevertheless ^G3676 G3305 many ^G4183 even ^G2532 of the rulers ^G758 believed ^G4100 in Him, but because ^G1223 of the Pharisees ^G5330 they were not confessing ^G3670 Him, [fn]for fear ^G2443 G3361 that they would be put ^G656 out ^G656 of ^G656 the ^G656 synagogue ^G656; 43 for they loved ^G25 the glory ^G1391 of men ^G444 rather ^G3123 than ^G2228 the glory ^G1391 of God ^G2316.

44 And Jesus ^G2424 cried ^G2896 out ^G2896 and said ^G3004, “He who believes ^G4100 in Me, does not believe ^G4100 in Me but in Him who sent ^G3992 Me. 45 And he who sees ^G2334 Me sees ^G2334 the One who sent ^G3992 Me. 46 I have come ^G2064 as Light ^G5457 into the world ^G2889, so ^G2443 that everyone ^G3956 who believes ^G4100 in Me will not remain ^G3306 in darkness ^G4653. 47 And if ^G1437 anyone ^G5100 hears ^G191 My words ^G4487 and does not keep ^G5442 them, I do not judge ^G2919 him; for I did not come ^G2064 to judge ^G2919 the world ^G2889, but to save ^G4982 the world ^G2889. 48 He who rejects ^G114 Me and does not receive ^G2983 My words ^G4487, has ^G2192 one who judges ^G2919 him; the word ^G3056 I spoke ^G2980 is what ^G1565 will judge ^G2919 him on the last ^G2078 day ^G2250. 49 For I did not speak ^G2980 from Myself ^G1683, but the Father ^G3962 Himself ^G846 who sent ^G3992 Me has given ^G1325 Me a commandment ^G1785—what ^G5101 to say ^G3004 and what ^G5101 to speak ^G2980. 50 And I know ^G6063 that His commandment ^G1785 is eternal ^G166 life ^G2222; therefore ^G3767 the things I speak ^G2980, I speak ^G2980 just ^G2531 as the Father ^G3962 has told ^G3004 Me.”
