Jesus Flogged and Rejected as King

1 Pilate ^G4091 then ^G3767 took ^G2983 Jesus ^G2424 and [fn]flogged ^G3146 Him.

2 And when the soldiers ^G4757 twisted ^G4120 together a crown ^G4735 of thorns ^G173, they put ^G2007 it on ^G2007 His head ^G2776, and put ^G4016 a purple ^G4210 [fn]robe ^G2440 on ^G4016 Him; 3 and they were coming ^G2064 to Him and saying ^G3004, “Hail ^G5463, King ^G935 of the Jews ^G2453!” and were giving ^G1325 Him slaps ^G4475 in the face. 4 And Pilate ^G4091 came ^G1831 out ^G1831 again ^G3825 and *said ^G3004 to them, “Behold ^G2396, I am bringing ^G71 Him out to you so ^G2443 that you may know ^G1097 that I find ^G2147 no ^G3762 guilt ^G156 in Him.” 5 Jesus ^G2424 then ^G3767 came ^G1831 out ^G1831, wearing ^G5409 the crown ^G4735 of thorns ^G174 and the purple ^G4210 [fn]robe ^G2440. Pilate *said ^G3004 to them, “Behold ^G2400, the man ^G444!” 6 So ^G3767 when ^G3753 the chief ^G749 priests ^G749 and the officers ^G5257 saw ^G3708 Him, they cried ^G2905 out saying ^G3004, “Crucify ^G4717, crucify ^G4717!” Pilate ^G4091 *said ^G3004 to them, “Take ^G2983 Him yourselves ^G4771 and crucify ^G4717 Him, for I find ^G2147 no ^G3756 guilt ^G156 in Him.” 7 The Jews ^G2453 answered ^G611 him, “We have ^G2192 a law ^G3551, and by that law ^G3551 He ought ^G3784 to die ^G599 because ^G3754 He made ^G4160 Himself ^G1438 out ^G4160 to be the Son ^G5207 of God ^G2316.”

8 Therefore ^G3767 when ^G3753 Pilate ^G4091 heard ^G191 this ^G3778 statement ^G3056, he became ^G5399 more ^G3123 afraid ^G5399; 9 and he entered ^G1525 into the [fn]Praetorium ^G4232 again ^G3825 and *said ^G3004 to Jesus ^G2424, “Where ^G4159 are You from?” But Jesus ^G2424 gave ^G1325 him no ^G3756 answer ^G612. 10 So ^G3767 Pilate ^G4091 *said ^G3004 to Him, “You do not speak ^G2980 to me? Do You not know ^G6063 that I have ^G2192 authority ^G1849 to release ^G630 You, and I have ^G2192 authority ^G1849 to crucify ^G4717 You?” 11 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611, “You would have ^G2192 no ^G3756 G3762 authority ^G1849 [fn]over ^G2596 Me, unless ^G1487 G3361 it had been ^G1510 given ^G1325 you from above ^G509; for this ^G3778 reason ^G1223 he who delivered ^G3860 Me to you has ^G2192 the greater ^G3173 sin ^G266.” 12 As a result ^G1537 of this ^G3778 Pilate ^G4091 kept ^G2212 seeking ^G2212 to release ^G630 Him, but the Jews ^G2453 cried ^G2905 out saying ^G3004, “If ^G1437 you release ^G630 this ^G3778 man ^G3778, you are no ^G3756 friend ^G5384 of Caesar ^G2541; everyone ^G3956 who makes ^G4160 himself ^G1438 to be a king ^G935 [fn]opposes ^G483 Caesar ^G2541.”

13 Therefore ^G3767 when Pilate ^G4091 heard ^G191 these ^G3778 words ^G3056, he brought ^G71 Jesus ^G2424 out, and sat ^G2523 down ^G2523 on the judgment ^G968 seat ^G968 at a place ^G5117 called ^G3004 [fn]The Stone Pavement ^G3038, but in [fn]Hebrew ^G1447, Gabbatha ^G1042. 14 Now ^G1161 it was the day ^G3904 of ^G3904 [fn]Preparation ^G3904 for the Passover ^G3957; it was about ^G5613 the [fn]sixth ^G1623 hour ^G5610. The Crucifixion

16 So ^G3767 he then ^G5119 delivered ^G3860 Him over to them to be crucified ^G4717.

17 They took ^G3880 Jesus ^G2424, therefore ^G3767, and He went ^G1831 out ^G1831, [fn]bearing ^G941 His own ^G1438 cross ^G4716, to the place called ^G3004 the Place ^G5117 of a Skull ^G2898, which ^G3739 is called ^G3004 in [fn]Hebrew ^G1447, Golgotha ^G1115. 18 There ^G3699 they crucified ^G4717 Him, and with Him two ^G1417 other ^G243 men ^G243, one on ^G1782 either ^G1782 side ^G1782, and Jesus ^G2424 in between ^G3319. 19 And Pilate ^G4091 also ^G2532 wrote ^G1125 an inscription ^G5102 and put ^G5087 it on the cross ^G4716. It was written ^G1125, “JESUS ^G2424 THE NAZARENE ^G3480, THE KING ^G935 OF THE JEWS ^G2453.” 20 Therefore ^G3767 many ^G4183 of the Jews ^G2453 read ^G314 this ^G3778 inscription ^G5102, for the place ^G5117 where ^G3699 Jesus ^G2424 was crucified ^G4717 was near ^G1451 the city ^G4172; and it was written ^G1125 in [fn]Hebrew ^G1447, Latin ^G4515, and in Greek ^G1676. 21 So ^G3767 the chief ^G749 priests ^G749 of the Jews ^G2453 were saying ^G3004 to Pilate ^G4091, “Do not write ^G1125, ‘The King ^G935 of the Jews ^G2453;’ but that He said ^G3004, ‘I am ^G1510 King ^G935 of the Jews ^G2453.’” 22 Pilate ^G4091 answered ^G611, “What ^G3739 I have written ^G1125 I have written ^G1125.”

But standing ^G2476 by the cross ^G4716 of Jesus ^G2424 were His mother ^G3384, and His mother’s ^G3384 sister ^G79, Mary ^G3137 the wife of Clopas ^G2832, and Mary ^G3137 Magdalene ^G3094. 26 When Jesus ^G2424 then ^G3767 saw ^G3708 His mother ^G3384, and the disciple ^G3101 whom ^G3739 He loved ^G25 standing ^G3936 nearby ^G3936, He *said ^G3004 to His mother ^G3384, “Woman ^G1135, behold ^G2396, your son ^G5207!” 27 Then ^G1534 He *said ^G3004 to the disciple ^G3101, “Behold ^G2396, your mother ^G3384!” From that hour ^G5610 the disciple ^G3101 took ^G2983 her into his ^G2398 home.

Scripture Fulfilled—It Is Finished

28 After ^G3326 this ^G3778, Jesus ^G2424, knowing ^G6063 that all ^G3956 things ^G3956 had already ^G2235 been finished ^G5055, in order [fn]to finish ^G5048 the Scripture ^G1124, *said ^G3004, “I am ^G1372 thirsty ^G1372.”

29 A jar ^G4632 full ^G3324 of sour ^G3690 wine ^G3690 was standing ^G2749 there; so ^G3767 they put ^G4060 a sponge ^G4699 full ^G3324 of the sour ^G3690 wine ^G3690 upon a branch of hyssop ^G5301 and brought ^G4374 it up ^G4374 to His mouth ^G4750. 30 Therefore ^G3767 when ^G3753 Jesus ^G2424 had received ^G2983 the sour ^G3690 wine ^G3690, He said ^G3004, “It is finished ^G5055!” And bowing ^G2827 His head ^G2776, He gave ^G3860 up ^G3860 His spirit ^G4151.

31 Then ^G3767 the Jews ^G2453, because ^G1893 it was the day ^G3904 of ^G3904 Preparation ^G3904, so ^G2443 that the bodies ^G4983 would not remain ^G3306 on the cross ^G4716 on the Sabbath ^G4521 ([fn]for that Sabbath ^G4521 was a high ^G3173 day ^G2250), asked ^G2065 Pilate ^G4091 that their legs ^G4628 might be broken ^G2608, and that they might be taken ^G142 away ^G142. 32 So ^G3767 the soldiers ^G4757 came ^G2064, and broke ^G2608 the legs ^G4628 of the first ^G4413 man ^G4413 and of the other ^G243 who was crucified ^G4957 with Him; 33 but coming ^G2064 to Jesus ^G2424, when ^G5613 they saw ^G3708 that He was already ^G2235 dead ^G2348, they did not break ^G2608 His legs ^G4628. 34 But one ^G1520 of the soldiers ^G4757 pierced ^G3572 His side ^G4125 with a spear ^G3057, and immediately ^G2117 blood ^G129 and water ^G5204 came ^G1831 out ^G1831. 35 And he who has seen ^G3708 has borne ^G3140 witness ^G3140, and his witness ^G3141 is true ^G228; and he knows ^G6063 that he is telling ^G3004 the truth ^G227, so ^G2443 that you also ^G2532 may believe ^G4100. 36 For these ^G3778 things ^G3778 came ^G1096 to pass ^G1096 in ^G2443 order ^G2443 that ^G2443 the Scripture ^G1124 would be fulfilled ^G4137, “NOT A BONE ^G3747 OF HIM SHALL BE [fn]BROKEN ^G4937.” 37 And again ^G3825 another ^G2087 Scripture ^G1124 says ^G3004, “THEY SHALL LOOK ^G3708 ON HIM WHOM ^G3739 THEY PIERCED ^G1574.”

Jesus Is Buried

38 Now after ^G3326 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 Joseph ^G2501 of Arimathea ^G707, being ^G1510 a disciple ^G3101 of Jesus ^G2424, but secretly ^G2928 because of his fear ^G5401 of the Jews ^G2453, asked ^G2065 Pilate ^G4091 that he might take ^G142 away ^G142 the body ^G4983 of Jesus ^G2424; and Pilate ^G4091 granted ^G2010 permission ^G2010. So ^G3767 he came ^G2064 and took ^G142 away ^G142 His body ^G4983.
