The Empty Tomb

1 Now ^G1161 on the first ^G1520 day of the week ^G4521, Mary ^G3137 Magdalene ^G3094 *came ^G2064 early ^G4404 to the tomb ^G3419, while it *was still ^G2089 dark ^G4653, and *saw ^G991 the stone ^G3037 already taken ^G142 away ^G142 from the tomb ^G3419.

2 So ^G3767 she *ran ^G5143 and *came ^G2064 to Simon ^G4613 Peter ^G4074 and to the other ^G243 disciple ^G3101 whom ^G3739 Jesus ^G2424 loved ^G5368, and *said ^G3004 to them, “They have taken ^G142 away ^G142 the Lord ^G2962 out of the tomb ^G3419, and we do not know ^G6063 where ^G4226 they have laid ^G5087 Him.” 3 So ^G3767 Peter ^G4074 and the other ^G243 disciple ^G3101 went ^G1831 forth ^G1831, and they were going ^G2064 to the tomb ^G3419. 4 And the two ^G1417 were running ^G5143 together ^G3674; and the other ^G243 disciple ^G3101 ran ^G4390 ahead ^G4390 faster ^G5036 than Peter ^G4074 and came ^G2064 to the tomb ^G3419 first ^G4413; 5 and stooping ^G3879 and looking ^G3879 in, he *saw ^G991 the linen ^G3608 wrappings ^G3608 lying ^G2749 there; but he did not go ^G1525 in ^G1525. 6 And so ^G3767 Simon ^G4613 Peter ^G4074 also ^G2532 *came ^G2064, following ^G190 him, and entered ^G1525 the tomb ^G3419; and he *saw ^G2334 the linen ^G3608 wrappings ^G3608 lying ^G2749 there, 7 and the face-cloth ^G4676 which ^G3739 had been ^G1510 on His head ^G2776, not lying ^G2749 with the linen ^G3608 wrappings ^G3608, but folded ^G1794 up in a place ^G5117 by itself ^G5565. 8 So ^G3767 the other ^G243 disciple ^G3101 who had first ^G4413 come ^G2064 to the tomb ^G3419 then ^G5119 also ^G2532 entered ^G1525, and he saw ^G3708 and believed ^G4100. 9 For as yet ^G3764 they did not understand ^G6063 the Scripture ^G1124, that He must ^G1163 rise ^G450 again ^G450 from the dead ^G3498. 10 So ^G3767 the disciples ^G3101 went ^G565 away ^G565 again ^G3825 to where they were staying ^G848 G1438.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

11 But Mary ^G3137 was standing ^G2476 outside ^G1854 the tomb ^G3419 crying ^G2799; and so ^G3767, as she was crying ^G2799, she stooped ^G3879 to ^G3879 look ^G3879 into the tomb ^G3419;

12 and she *saw ^G2334 two ^G1417 angels ^G32 in white ^G3022 sitting ^G2516, one ^G1520 at the head ^G2776 and one ^G1520 at the feet ^G4228, where ^G3699 the body ^G4983 of Jesus ^G2424 had been lying ^G2749. 13 And they *said ^G3004 to her, “Woman ^G1135, why ^G5101 are you crying ^G2799?” She *said ^G3004 to them, “Because ^G3754 they have taken ^G142 away ^G142 my Lord ^G2962, and I do not know ^G6063 where ^G4226 they have laid ^G5087 Him.” 14 When she had said ^G3004 this ^G3778, she turned ^G4762 around ^G3694 and *saw ^G2334 Jesus ^G2424 standing ^G2476 there, and did not know ^G6063 that it was Jesus ^G2424. 15 Jesus ^G2424 *said ^G3004 to her, “Woman ^G1135, why ^G5101 are you crying ^G2799? Whom ^G5101 are you seeking ^G2212?” Thinking ^G1380 Him to be the gardener ^G2780, she *said ^G3004 to Him, “Sir ^G2962, if ^G1487 you have carried ^G941 Him away ^G941, tell ^G3004 me where ^G4226 you have laid ^G5087 Him, and I will take ^G142 Him away ^G142.” 16 Jesus ^G2424 *said ^G3004 to her, “Mary ^G3137!” She turned ^G4762 and *said ^G3004 to Him in [fn]Hebrew ^G1447, “Rabboni ^G4462!” (which ^G3739 means ^G3004, Teacher ^G1320). 17 Jesus ^G2424 *said ^G3004 to her, “Stop ^G3361 clinging ^G681 to Me, for I have not yet ^G3768 ascended ^G305 to the Father ^G3962; but go ^G4198 to My brothers ^G80 and say ^G3004 to them, ‘I ascend ^G305 to My Father ^G3962 and your Father ^G3962, and My God ^G2316 and your God ^G2316.’” 18 Mary ^G3137 Magdalene ^G3094 *came ^G2064, announcing ^G6000 to the disciples ^G3101, “I have seen ^G3708 the Lord ^G2962,” and that He had said ^G3004 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 to her.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

19 So ^G3767 while it was evening ^G3798 on that day ^G2250, the first ^G1520 day of the week ^G4521, and while the doors ^G2374 were shut ^G2808 where ^G3699 the disciples ^G3101 were, for fear ^G5401 of the Jews ^G2453, Jesus ^G2424 came ^G2064 and stood ^G2476 in their midst ^G3319 and *said ^G3004 to them, “[fn]Peace ^G1515 be with you.”

20 And when He had said ^G3004 this ^G3778, He showed ^G1166 them both ^G2532 His hands ^G5495 and His side ^G4125. The disciples ^G3101 then ^G3767 rejoiced ^G5463 when they saw ^G3708 the Lord ^G2962. 21 So ^G3767 Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to them again ^G3825, “Peace ^G1515 be with you; as the Father ^G3962 has sent ^G649 Me, I also ^G2532 send ^G3992 you.” 22 And when He had said ^G3004 this ^G3778, He breathed ^G1720 on ^G1720 them and *said ^G3004 to them, “Receive ^G2983 the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151. 23 If ^G302 you forgive ^G863 the sins ^G266 of any ^G5100, their sins [fn]have been forgiven ^G863 them; if ^G302 you retain ^G2902 the sins of any ^G5100, they have been retained ^G2902.”

24 But Thomas ^G2381, one ^G1520 of the twelve ^G1427, called ^G3004 [fn]Didymus ^G1324, was not with them when ^G3753 Jesus ^G2424 came ^G2064. 25 So ^G3767 the other ^G243 disciples ^G3101 were saying ^G3004 to him, “We have seen ^G3708 the Lord ^G2962!” But he said ^G3004 to them, “Unless ^G1437 G3361 I see ^G3708 in His hands ^G5495 the imprint ^G5179 of the nails ^G2247, and put ^G906 my finger ^G1147 into the place ^G5117 of the nails ^G2247, and put ^G906 my hand ^G5495 into His side ^G4125, I will not believe ^G4100.”

26 And [fn]after ^G3326 eight ^G3638 days ^G2250 His disciples ^G3101 were again ^G3825 inside ^G2080, and Thomas ^G2381 with them. Jesus ^G2424 *came ^G2064, the doors ^G2374 having been [fn]shut ^G2808, and stood ^G2476 in their midst ^G3319 and said ^G3004, “Peace ^G1515 be with you.” 27 Then ^G1534 He *said ^G3004 to Thomas ^G2381, “Bring ^G5342 your finger ^G1147 here ^G5602, and see ^G3708 My hands ^G5495; and bring ^G5342 your hand ^G5495 here and put ^G906 it into My side ^G4125; and do not be unbelieving ^G571, but believing ^G4103.” 28 Thomas ^G2381 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to Him, “My Lord ^G2962 and my God ^G2316!” 29 Jesus ^G2424 *said ^G3004 to him, “Because ^G3754 you have seen ^G3708 Me, have you believed ^G4100? Blessed ^G3107 are those who did not see ^G3708, and yet believed ^G4100.”

Why This Gospel Was Written

30 Therefore ^G3767 many ^G4183 other ^G243 [fn]signs ^G4592 Jesus ^G2424 also ^G2532 did ^G4160 in ^G1799 the ^G1799 presence ^G1799 of ^G1799 the disciples ^G3101, which ^G3739 are not written ^G1125 in this ^G3778 book ^G975;

31 but these ^G3778 have been written ^G1125 so ^G2443 that you may believe ^G4100 that Jesus ^G2424 is the [fn]Christ ^G5547, the Son ^G5207 of God ^G2316; and that believing ^G4100 you may have ^G2192 life ^G2222 in His name ^G3686.
