Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

1 After ^G3326 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 Jesus ^G2424 went ^G565 away ^G565 to the other ^G4008 side ^G4008 of the Sea ^G2281 of Galilee ^G1056 (or Tiberias ^G5085).

2 Now a large ^G4183 crowd ^G3793 was following ^G190 Him, because ^G3754 they were seeing ^G3708 the [fn]signs ^G4592 which ^G3739 He was doing ^G4160 on those ^G3588 who were sick ^G770. 3 Then ^G2532 Jesus ^G2424 went ^G424 up on the mountain ^G3735, and there ^G1563 He was sitting ^G2521 down ^G2521 with His disciples ^G3101. 4 Now ^G1161 the Passover ^G3957, the feast ^G1859 of the Jews ^G2453, was near ^G1451. 5 Therefore ^G3767 Jesus ^G2424, lifting ^G1869 up ^G1869 His eyes ^G3788 and seeing ^G2300 that a large ^G4183 crowd ^G3793 was coming ^G2064 to Him, *said ^G3004 to Philip ^G5376, “Where ^G4159 should we buy ^G59 bread ^G740, so ^G3767 that these ^G3778 people ^G3778 may eat ^G2068?” 6 And this ^G3778 He was saying ^G3004 to test ^G3985 him, for He Himself ^G846 knew ^G6063 what ^G5101 He was going ^G3195 to do ^G4160. 7 Philip ^G5376 answered ^G611 Him, “Two ^G1250 hundred ^G1250 [fn]denarii ^G1220 worth of bread ^G740 is not sufficient ^G714 for them, for everyone ^G1538 to receive ^G2983 a little ^G1024.” 8 One ^G1520 of His disciples ^G3101, Andrew ^G406, Simon ^G4613 Peter’s ^G4074 brother ^G80, *said ^G3004 to Him, 9 “There is a boy ^G3808 here ^G5602 who ^G3739 has ^G2192 five ^G4002 barley ^G2916 loaves ^G740 and two ^G1417 fish ^G3795, but what ^G5101 are these ^G3778 for so ^G5118 many ^G5118 people ^G5118?” 10 Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004, “Have ^G4160 the people ^G444 [fn]sit ^G377 down ^G377.” Now ^G1161 there was much ^G4183 grass ^G5528 in the place ^G5117. So ^G3767 the men ^G435 [fn]sat ^G377 down ^G377, in number ^G706 about ^G5613 five ^G4000 thousand ^G4000. 11 Jesus ^G2424 then ^G3767 took ^G2983 the loaves ^G740, and having given ^G2168 thanks ^G2168, He distributed ^G1239 them to those ^G3588 who were seated ^G345; likewise ^G3668 also ^G2532 of the fish ^G3795, as much ^G3745 as they wanted ^G2309. 12 And when ^G5613 they were filled ^G1705, He *said ^G3004 to His disciples ^G3101, “Gather ^G4863 up ^G4863 the leftover ^G4052 pieces ^G2801 so ^G2443 that nothing ^G3361 G5100 will be lost ^G622.” 13 So ^G3767 they gathered ^G4863 them up ^G4863, and filled ^G1072 twelve ^G1427 baskets ^G2894 with pieces ^G2801 of the five ^G4002 barley ^G2916 loaves ^G740 left ^G4052 over ^G4052 by those ^G3588 who had eaten ^G977. 14 Therefore ^G3767 when the people ^G444 saw ^G3708 the [fn]sign ^G4592 which ^G3739 He had done ^G4160, they were saying ^G3004, “This ^G3778 is truly ^G230 the Prophet ^G4396 who is to come ^G2064 into the world ^G2889.”

Jesus Walks on the Sea

15 So ^G3767 Jesus ^G2424, knowing ^G1097 that they were going ^G3195 to come ^G2064 and take ^G726 Him by force ^G726 to make ^G4160 Him king ^G935, withdrew ^G402 again ^G3825 to the mountain ^G3735 by Himself ^G846 alone ^G3441.

16 Now ^G1161 when ^G5613 evening ^G3798 came ^G1096, His disciples ^G3101 went ^G2597 down ^G2597 to the sea ^G2281,

17 and after getting ^G1684 into a boat ^G4143, they began to cross ^G4008 the sea ^G2281 to Capernaum ^G2584. It had already ^G2235 become ^G1096 dark ^G4653, and Jesus ^G2424 had not yet ^G3768 come ^G2064 to them. 18 And the sea ^G2281 *was stirred ^G1326 up because a strong ^G3173 wind ^G417 was blowing ^G4154. 19 Then ^G3767, when they had rowed ^G1643 about ^G5613 [fn]twenty-five ^G1501 G4002 or ^G2228 thirty stadia ^G4712, they *saw ^G2334 Jesus ^G2424 walking ^G4043 on the sea ^G2281 and drawing ^G1096 near ^G1451 to the boat ^G4143; and they were ^G5399 frightened ^G5399. 20 But He *said ^G3004 to them, [fn]“It is I; [fn]do not be ^G5399 afraid ^G5399.” 21 So ^G3767 they were willing ^G2309 to receive ^G2983 Him into the boat ^G4143, and immediately ^G2112 the boat ^G4143 was at the land ^G1093 to which ^G3739 they were going ^G5217.

22 On the next ^G1887 day ^G1887, the crowd ^G3793 which stood ^G2476 on the other ^G4008 side ^G4008 of the sea ^G2281 saw ^G3708 that there was no ^G3756 other ^G243 small ^G4142 boat ^G4142 there ^G1563, except ^G1508 one ^G1520, and that Jesus ^G2424 had not entered ^G4897 with His disciples ^G3101 into the boat ^G4143, but that His disciples ^G3101 had gone ^G565 away ^G565 alone ^G3441. 23 Other ^G243 small ^G4142 boats ^G4142 came ^G2064 from Tiberias ^G5085 near ^G1451 to the place ^G5117 where ^G3699 they ate ^G2068 the bread ^G740 after the Lord ^G2962 had given ^G2168 thanks ^G2168. 24 So ^G3767 when ^G3753 the crowd ^G3793 saw ^G3708 that Jesus ^G2424 was not there ^G1563, nor ^G3761 His disciples ^G3101, they themselves ^G846 got ^G1684 into the small ^G4142 boats ^G4142, and came ^G2064 to Capernaum ^G2584 seeking ^G2212 Jesus ^G2424. 25 And when ^G4219 they found ^G2147 Him on the other ^G4008 side ^G4008 of the sea ^G2281, they said ^G3004 to Him, “Rabbi ^G4461, when ^G4219 did You come ^G1096 here ^G5602?”

I Am the Bread of Life

26 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611 them and said ^G3004, “Truly ^G281, truly ^G281, I say ^G3004 to you, you seek ^G2212 Me, not because ^G3754 you saw ^G3708 signs ^G4592, but because ^G3754 you ate ^G2068 of the loaves ^G740 and were filled ^G5526.

27 Do not work ^G2038 for the food ^G1035 which perishes ^G622, but for the food ^G1035 which endures ^G3306 to eternal ^G166 life ^G2222, which ^G3739 the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 will give ^G1325 to you, for on ^G4972 Him the Father ^G3962, God ^G2316, set ^G4972 His seal ^G4972.” 28 Therefore ^G3767 they said ^G3004 to Him, “What ^G5101 should we do ^G4160, so ^G3767 that we may work ^G2038 the works ^G2041 of God ^G2316?” 29 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to them, “This ^G3778 is the work ^G2041 of God ^G2316, that you believe ^G4100 in Him whom ^G3739 He has sent ^G649.” 30 So ^G3767 they said ^G3004 to Him, “What ^G5101 then ^G3767 do You do ^G4160 for a sign ^G4592 so ^G3767 that we may see ^G3708, and believe ^G4100 You? What ^G5101 work ^G2038 do You perform ^G2038? 31 Our fathers ^G3962 ate ^G2068 the manna ^G3131 in the wilderness ^G2048; as it is written ^G1125, ‘HE GAVE ^G1325 THEM BREAD ^G740 FROM HEAVEN ^G3772 TO EAT ^G2068.’” 32 Jesus ^G2424 then ^G3767 said ^G3004 to them, “Truly ^G281, truly ^G281, I say ^G3004 to you, Moses ^G3475 has not given ^G1325 you the bread ^G740 from heaven ^G3772, but My Father ^G3962 gives ^G1325 you the true ^G228 bread ^G740 from heaven ^G3772. 33 For the bread ^G740 of God ^G2316 is [fn]that which comes ^G2597 down ^G2597 from heaven ^G3772 and gives ^G1325 life ^G2222 to the world ^G2889.” 34 Then ^G3767 they said ^G3004 to Him, “Lord ^G2962, always ^G3842 give ^G1325 us this ^G3778 bread ^G740.”

35 Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to them, “I am ^G1510 the bread ^G740 of life ^G2222. He who comes ^G2064 to Me will never hunger ^G3983, and he who believes ^G4100 in Me will never ^G3756 G3361 thirst ^G1372. 36 But I said ^G3004 to you that you have seen ^G3708 Me, and yet do not believe ^G4100. 37 All ^G3956 that the Father ^G3962 gives ^G1325 Me will come ^G2240 to Me, and the one who comes ^G2064 to Me I will never ^G3756 G3361 cast ^G1544 out ^G1544. 38 For I have come ^G2597 down ^G2597 from heaven ^G3772, not to do ^G4160 My own ^G1699 will ^G2307, but the will ^G2307 of Him who sent ^G3992 Me. 39 Now this ^G3778 is the will ^G2307 of Him who sent ^G3992 Me, that of all ^G3956 that He has given ^G1325 Me I lose ^G622 nothing ^G3361, but raise ^G450 it up ^G450 on the last ^G2078 day ^G2250. 40 For this ^G3778 is the will ^G2307 of My Father ^G3962, that everyone ^G3956 who sees ^G2334 the Son ^G5207 and believes ^G4100 in Him will have ^G2192 eternal ^G166 life ^G2222, and I Myself ^G1473 will raise ^G450 him up ^G450 on the last ^G2078 day ^G2250.”

Words to the Jews

41 Therefore ^G3767 the Jews ^G2453 were grumbling ^G1111 about ^G4012 Him, because ^G3754 He said ^G3004, “I am ^G1510 the bread ^G740 that came ^G2597 down ^G2597 from heaven ^G3772.”

42 They were saying ^G3004, “Is not this ^G3778 Jesus ^G2424, the son ^G5207 of Joseph ^G2501, whose ^G3739 father ^G3962 and mother ^G3384 we know ^G6063? How ^G4459 does He now ^G3568 say ^G3004, ‘I have come ^G2597 down ^G2597 from heaven ^G3772’?” 43 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to them, “Stop grumbling ^G1111 among ^G3326 yourselves ^G240. 44 No ^G3762 one ^G3762 can ^G1410 come ^G2064 to Me unless ^G1437 G3361 the Father ^G3962 who sent ^G3992 Me draws ^G1670 him; and I will raise ^G450 him up ^G450 on the last ^G2078 day ^G2250. 45 It is written ^G1125 in the prophets ^G4396, ‘AND THEY SHALL ALL ^G3956 BE TAUGHT ^G1318 BY GOD ^G2316.’ Everyone ^G3956 who has heard ^G191 and learned ^G3129 from the Father ^G3962 comes ^G2064 to Me. 46 Not that anyone ^G5100 has seen ^G3708 the Father ^G3962, except ^G1508 the One who is from God ^G2316; He has seen ^G3708 the Father ^G3962. 47 Truly ^G281, truly ^G281, I say ^G3004 to you, he who believes ^G4100 has ^G2192 eternal ^G166 life ^G2222. 48 I am ^G1510 the bread ^G740 of life ^G2222. 49 Your fathers ^G3962 ate ^G2068 the manna ^G3131 in the wilderness ^G2048, and they died ^G599. 50 This ^G3778 is the bread ^G740 which comes ^G2597 down ^G2597 from heaven ^G3772, so ^G2443 that one ^G5100 may eat ^G2068 of it and not die ^G599. 51 I am ^G1510 the living ^G2198 bread ^G740 that came ^G2597 down ^G2597 from heaven ^G3772; if ^G1437 anyone ^G5100 eats ^G2068 of this ^G3778 bread ^G740, he will live ^G2198 forever ^G165; and also ^G2532 the bread ^G740 which ^G3739 I will give ^G1325 for the life ^G2222 of the world ^G2889 is My flesh ^G4561.”

52 Then ^G3767 the Jews ^G2453 began to argue ^G3164 with one ^G240 another ^G240, saying ^G3004, “How ^G4459 can ^G1410 this ^G3778 man ^G3778 give ^G1325 us His flesh ^G4561 to eat ^G2068?” 53 So ^G3767 Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to them, “Truly ^G281, truly ^G281, I say ^G3004 to you, unless ^G1437 G3361 you eat ^G2068 the flesh ^G4561 of the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 and drink ^G4095 His blood ^G129, you have ^G2192 no ^G3756 life ^G2222 in yourselves ^G1438. 54 He who eats ^G5176 My flesh ^G4561 and drinks ^G4095 My blood ^G129 has ^G2192 eternal ^G166 life ^G2222, and I will raise ^G450 him up ^G450 on the last ^G2078 day ^G2250. 55 For My flesh ^G4561 is true ^G227 food ^G1035, and My blood ^G129 is true ^G227 drink ^G4213. 56 He who eats ^G5176 My flesh ^G4561 and drinks ^G4095 My blood ^G129 abides ^G3306 in Me, and I in him. 57 As the living ^G2198 Father ^G3962 sent ^G649 Me, and I live ^G2198 because ^G1223 of the Father ^G3962, so ^G2532 he who eats ^G5176 Me, he also ^G2548 will live ^G2198 because ^G1223 of Me. 58 This ^G3778 is the bread ^G740 which ^G3588 came ^G2597 down ^G2597 out ^G2597 of heaven ^G3772, not as the fathers ^G3962 ate ^G2068 and died ^G599. He who eats ^G5176 this ^G3778 bread ^G740 will live ^G2198 forever ^G165.”

Words to the Disciples

59 These ^G3778 things ^G3778 He said ^G3004 in the synagogue ^G4864 as He taught ^G1321 in Capernaum ^G2584.

60 Therefore ^G3767 many ^G4183 of His disciples ^G3101, when they heard ^G191 this said ^G3004, “This ^G3778 is a difficult ^G4642 statement ^G3056; who ^G5101 can ^G1410 listen ^G191 to it?” 61 But Jesus ^G2424, knowing ^{G6063 G1722 G1438} in Himself that His disciples ^G3101 were grumbling ^G1111 at this ^G3778, said ^G3004 to them, “Does this ^G3778 cause ^G4624 you to stumble ^G4624? 62 What then ^G3767 if ^G1437 you see ^G2334 the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 ascending ^G305 to where ^G3699 He was before ^G4387? 63 The Spirit ^G4151 is the One who gives ^G2227 life ^G2227; the flesh ^G4561 profits ^G5623 nothing ^G3762; the words ^G4487 that I have spoken ^G2980 to you are spirit ^G4151 and are life ^G2222. 64 But there are some ^G5100 of you who ^G3739 do not believe ^G4100.” For Jesus ^G2424 knew ^G6063 from the beginning ^G746 who ^G5101 they were who did not believe ^G4100, and who ^G5101 it was that would [fn]betray ^G3860 Him. 65 And He was saying ^G3004, “For this ^G3778 reason ^G1223 I have said ^G3004 to you, that no ^G3762 one ^G3762 can ^G1410 come ^G2064 to Me unless ^G1437 G3361 it has been ^G1510 granted ^G1325 him from the Father ^G3962.”

Peter Confesses Jesus Is the Christ

66 As a result ^G1537 of this ^G3778 many ^G4183 of His disciples ^G3101 [fn]went away ^G3694 G565 and were not walking ^G4043 with Him anymore ^G3765.

67 So ^G3767 Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to the twelve ^G1427, “Do you ^G2309 also ^G2532 want ^G2309 to go ^G5217?” 68 Simon ^G4613 Peter ^G4074 answered ^G611 Him, “Lord ^G2962, to whom ^G5101 shall we go ^G565? You have ^G2192 words ^G4487 of eternal ^G166 life ^G2222. 69 And we have believed ^G4100 and have come to know ^G1097 that You are the Holy ^G40 One ^G40 of God ^G2316.” 70 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611 them, “Did I Myself ^G1473 not choose ^G1586 you, the twelve ^G1427, and yet one ^G1520 of you is a devil ^G1228?” 71 Now ^G1161 He was speaking ^G3004 of Judas ^G2455 the son of Simon ^G4613 Iscariot ^G2469, for he, one ^G1520 of the twelve ^G1427, [fn]was ^G3195 going ^G3195 to ^G3195 betray ^G3860 Him.
