Jesus Teaches at the Feast of Booths

1 And after ^G3326 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 Jesus ^G2424 was walking ^G4043 in Galilee ^G1056, for He was unwilling ^G3756 G2309 to walk ^G4043 in Judea ^G2449 because ^G3754 the Jews ^G2453 were seeking ^G2212 to kill ^G615 Him.

2 Now ^G1161 the feast ^G1859 of the Jews ^G2453, the Feast ^G4634 of ^G4634 Booths ^G4634, was near ^G1451. 3 Therefore ^G3767 His brothers ^G80 said ^G3004 to Him, “Leave ^G3327 here ^G1782 and go ^G5217 into Judea ^G2449, so ^G3767 that Your disciples ^G3101 also ^G2532 may see ^G2334 Your works ^G2041 which ^G3739 You are doing ^G4160. 4 For no ^G3762 one ^G3762 does ^G4160 anything ^G5100 in secret ^G2927 [fn]when ^G2532 he himself ^G846 seeks ^G2212 to be known openly ^G3954. If ^G1487 You do ^G4160 these ^G3778 things ^G3778, show ^G5319 Yourself ^G4572 publicly ^G5319 to the world ^G2889.” 5 For not even ^G3761 His brothers ^G80 were believing ^G4100 in Him. 6 So ^G3767 Jesus ^G2424 *said ^G3004 to them, “My time ^G2540 is not yet ^G3768 here ^G4332, but your time ^G2540 is always ^G3842 here ^G2092. 7 The world ^G2889 cannot ^G1410 G3756 hate ^G3404 you, but it hates ^G3404 Me because ^G3754 I bear ^G3140 witness ^G3140 about it, that its deeds ^G2041 are evil ^G4190. 8 Go ^G305 up ^G305 to the feast ^G1859 yourselves ^G4771; I am not [fn]yet ^G3768 going ^G305 up ^G305 to this ^G3778 feast ^G1859 because ^G3754 My time ^G2540 has not yet ^G3768 been ^G4137 fulfilled ^G4137.” 9 Having said ^G3004 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 to them, He stayed ^G3306 in Galilee ^G1056.

10 But when ^G5613 His brothers ^G80 had gone ^G305 up ^G305 to the feast ^G1859, then ^G5119 He Himself ^G846 also ^G2532 went ^G305 up ^G305, not publicly ^G5320, but as ^G5613 in ^G5613 secret ^G2927. 11 So ^G3767 the Jews ^G2453 were seeking ^G2212 Him at the feast ^G1859 and saying ^G3004, “Where ^G4226 is He?” 12 And there was much ^G4183 grumbling ^G1112 among ^G1722 the crowds ^G3793 concerning ^G4012 Him; some ^G3588 G3303 were saying ^G3004, “He is a good ^G18 man ^G18”; others ^G243 were saying ^G3004, “No ^G3756, on the contrary ^G235, He leads ^G4105 the crowd ^G3793 astray ^G4105.” 13 Yet ^G3305 no ^G3762 one ^G3762 was speaking ^G2980 openly ^G3954 about Him for fear ^G5401 of the Jews ^G2453.

14 But when it was now ^G2235 the middle ^G3322 of the feast ^G1859 Jesus ^G2424 went ^G305 up ^G305 into the temple ^G2413, and began to teach ^G1321. 15 The Jews ^G2453 then ^G3767 were ^G2296 marveling ^G2296, saying ^G3004, “How ^G4459 has this ^G3778 man ^G3778 become ^G6063 learned ^G6063, not ^G3361 having been educated ^G3129?” 16 So ^G3767 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611 them and said ^G3004, “My teaching ^G1322 is not Mine ^G1699, but from Him who sent ^G3992 Me. 17 If ^G1437 anyone ^G5100 is willing ^G2309 to do ^G4160 His will ^G2307, he will know ^G1097 about the teaching ^G1322, whether ^G4220 it is of God ^G2316 or ^G2228 I speak ^G2980 from Myself ^G1683. 18 He who speaks ^G2980 from himself ^G1438 seeks ^G2212 his own ^G2398 glory ^G1391; but He who is seeking ^G2212 the glory ^G1391 of the One who sent ^G3992 Him, He is true ^G227, and there is no ^G3756 unrighteousness ^G93 in Him.

19 “Did not Moses ^G3475 give ^G1325 you the Law ^G3551? And yet none ^G3762 of you does ^G4160 the Law ^G3551. Why ^G5101 do you seek ^G2212 to kill ^G615 Me?” 20 The crowd ^G3793 answered ^G611, “You have ^G2192 a demon ^G1140! Who ^G5101 seeks ^G2212 to kill ^G615 You?” 21 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611 them, “I did ^G4160 one ^G1520 work ^G2041, and you all ^G3956 marvel ^G2296. 22 For this ^G3778 reason ^G1223 Moses ^G3475 has given ^G1325 you circumcision ^G4061 (not because ^G3754 it is from Moses ^G3475, but from the fathers ^G3962), and on the Sabbath ^G4521 you circumcise ^G4059 a man ^G444. 23 If ^G1487 a man ^G444 receives ^G2983 circumcision ^G4061 on the Sabbath ^G4521 so ^G2443 that the Law ^G3551 of Moses ^G3475 will not be broken ^G3089, are you angry ^G5520 with Me because ^G3754 I made ^G4160 an entire ^G3650 man ^G444 well ^G5199 on the Sabbath ^G4521? 24 Do not judge ^G2919 according ^G2596 to appearance ^G3799, but [fn]judge ^G2919 with righteous ^G1342 judgment ^G2920.”

25 So ^G3767 some ^G5100 of the people ^G2415 of ^G2415 Jerusalem ^G2415 were saying ^G3004, “Is this ^G3778 not the man whom ^G3739 they are seeking ^G2212 to kill ^G615? 26 And look ^G2396, He is speaking ^G2980 openly ^G3954, and they are saying ^G3004 nothing ^G3762 to Him. Do the rulers ^G758 truly ^G230 know ^G1097 that this ^G3778 is the [fn]Christ ^G5547? 27 However ^G235, we know ^G6063 where ^G4159 this ^G3778 man ^G3778 is from; but whenever ^G3752 the Christ ^G5547 comes ^G2064, no ^G3762 one ^G3762 knows ^G1097 where ^G4159 He is from.” 28 Then ^G3767 Jesus ^G2424 cried ^G2896 out ^G2896 in the temple ^G2413, teaching ^G1321 and saying ^G3004, “You both ^G2532 know ^G6063 Me and know ^G6063 where ^G4159 I am ^G1510 from; and I have not come ^G2064 of Myself ^G1683, but He who sent ^G3992 Me is true ^G228, whom ^G3739 you do not know ^G6063. 29 I know ^G6063 Him, because ^G3754 I am ^G1510 from Him, and He sent ^G649 Me.” 30 So ^G3767 they were seeking ^G2212 to seize ^G4084 Him; [fn]yet no ^G3762 man ^G3762 laid ^G1911 his hand ^G5495 on Him, because ^G3754 His hour ^G5610 had not yet ^G3768 come ^G2064. 31 But many ^G4183 of the crowd ^G3793 believed ^G4100 in Him; and they were saying ^G3004, “When ^G3752 the [fn]Christ ^G5547 comes ^G2064, will He do ^G2038 more ^G4183 [fn]signs ^G4592 than ^G3739 this ^G3778 man ^G3778 did ^G2038?”

32 The Pharisees ^G5330 heard ^G191 the crowd ^G3793 [fn]whispering ^G1111 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 about ^G4012 Him, and the chief ^G749 priests ^G749 and the Pharisees ^G5330 sent ^G649 officers ^G5257 to seize ^G4084 Him. 33 Therefore ^G3767 Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004, “For a little ^G3398 while ^G5550 longer ^G2089 I am ^G1510 with you, then ^G2532 I go ^G5217 to Him who sent ^G3992 Me. 34 You will seek ^G2212 Me, and will not find ^G2147 Me; and where ^G3699 I am ^G1510, you cannot ^G1410 G3756 come ^G2064.” 35 The Jews ^G2453 then ^G3767 said ^G3004 to one ^G1438 another ^G1438, “Where ^G4226 does this ^G3778 man ^G3778 intend ^G3195 to go ^G4198 that we will not find ^G2147 Him? Is He intending ^G3195 to go ^G4198 to the Dispersion ^G1290 among the Greeks ^G1672 and teach ^G1321 the Greeks ^G1672? 36 What ^G5101 is this ^G3778 statement ^G3056 that He said ^G3004, ‘You will seek ^G2212 Me, and will not find ^G2147 Me; and where ^G3699 I am ^G1510, you cannot ^G1410 G3756 come ^G2064’?”

37 Now ^G1161 on the last ^G2078 day ^G2250, the great ^G3173 day of the feast ^G1859, Jesus ^G2424 stood ^G2476 and cried ^G2896 out ^G2896, saying ^G3004, “[fn]If ^G1437 anyone ^G5100 is thirsty ^G1372, [fn]let him come ^G2064 to Me and drink ^G4095. 38 He who believes ^G4100 in Me, as the Scripture ^G1124 said ^G3004, ‘From [fn]his innermost ^G2836 being ^G2836 will flow ^G4482 rivers ^G4215 of living ^G2198 water ^G5204.’” 39 But this ^G3778 He spoke ^G3004 of the Spirit ^G4151, whom ^G3739 those ^G3588 who believed ^G4100 in Him were going ^G3195 to receive ^G2983; for the Spirit ^G4151 was not yet ^G3768 given, because ^G3754 Jesus ^G2424 was not yet ^G3764 glorified ^G1392.

Division of People over Jesus

40 Some of the crowd ^G3793 therefore ^G3767, when they heard ^G191 these ^G3778 words ^G3056, were saying ^G3004, “This ^G3778 truly ^G230 is the Prophet ^G4396.”

41 Others ^G243 were saying ^G3004, “This ^G3778 is the [fn]Christ ^G5547.” Still others ^G3588 were saying ^G3004, “No, for ^G3361 is the [fn]Christ ^G5547 going to come ^G2064 from Galilee ^G1056? 42 Has not the Scripture ^G1124 said ^G3004 that the Christ ^G5547 comes ^G2064 from the seed ^G4690 of David ^G1138 and from Bethlehem ^G965, the village ^G2968 where ^G3699 David ^G1138 was?” 43 So ^G3767 a division ^G4978 occurred ^G1096 in the crowd ^G3793 because ^G1223 of Him. 44 Some ^G5100 of them were wanting ^G2309 to seize ^G4084 Him, but no ^G3762 one ^G3762 laid ^G1911 hands ^G5495 on Him.

45 The officers ^G5257 then ^G3767 came ^G2064 to the chief ^G749 priests ^G749 and Pharisees ^G5330, and they said ^G3004 to them, “Why ^G1223 G5101 did you not bring ^G71 Him?” 46 The officers ^G5257 answered ^G611, “Never ^G3763 has a man ^G444 spoken ^G2980 like ^G3779 this ^G3779!” 47 The Pharisees ^G5330 then ^G3767 answered ^G611 them, “Have you also ^G2532 been led ^G4105 astray ^G4105? 48 Have any ^G5100 of the rulers ^G758 or ^G2228 Pharisees ^G5330 believed ^G4100 in Him? 49 But this ^G3778 crowd ^G3793 which does not know ^G1097 the Law ^G3551 is accursed ^G6035.” 50 Nicodemus ^G3530 (he who came ^G2064 to Him before ^G4387), being ^G1510 one ^G1520 of them, *said ^G3004 to them, 51 “Does our Law ^G3551 judge ^G2919 a man ^G444 unless ^G1437 G3361 it first ^G4413 hears ^G191 from him and knows ^G1097 what ^G5101 he is doing ^G4160?” 52 They answered ^G611 him, “Are you also ^G2532 from Galilee ^G1056? Search ^G2045 and see ^G3708 that no ^G3756 prophet ^G4396 arises ^G1453 out of Galilee ^G1056.” 53 [fn][Everyone ^G1538 went ^G4198 to his home ^G3624.
