Five Kings Attack Gibeon

1 Now it happened ^H1961 that when Adoni-zedek ^H139 king ^H4428 of Jerusalem ^H3389 heard ^H8085 that Joshua ^H3091 had captured ^H3920 Ai ^H5857 and had devoted ^H2763 it to destruction ^H2763 (just ^H834 as he had done ^H6213 to Jericho ^H3405 and its king ^H4428, so ^H3651 he had done ^H6213 to Ai ^H5857 and its king ^H4428), and that the inhabitants ^H3427 of Gibeon ^H1391 had made ^H7999 peace ^H7999 with Israel ^H3478 and were [fn]within ^H7130 their land ^H7130,

2 they feared ^H3372 exceedingly ^H3966 because ^H3588 Gibeon ^H1391 was a great ^H1419 city ^H5892, like one ^H259 of the royal ^H4467 cities ^H5892, and because ^H3588 it was greater ^H1419 than ^H4480 Ai ^H5857, and all ^H3605 its men ^H376 were mighty ^H1368. 3 Therefore Adoni-zedek ^H139 king ^H4428 of Jerusalem ^H3389 sent ^H7971 word to Hoham ^H1944 king ^H4428 of Hebron ^H2275 and to Piram ^H6502 king ^H4428 of Jarmuth ^H3412 and to Japhia ^H3309 king ^H4428 of Lachish ^H3923 and to Debir ^H1688 king ^H4428 of Eglon ^H5700, saying ^H559, 4 “Come ^H5927 up ^H5927 to me and help ^H5826 me, and let us strike ^H5221 Gibeon ^H1391, for it has made ^H7999 peace ^H7999 with Joshua ^H3091 and with the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478.” 5 So the five ^H2568 kings ^H4428 of the Amorites ^H567, the king ^H4428 of Jerusalem ^H3389, the king ^H4428 of Hebron ^H2275, the king ^H4428 of Jarmuth ^H3412, the king ^H4428 of Lachish ^H3923, and the king ^H4428 of Eglon ^H5700, gathered ^H622 together and went ^H5927 up ^H5927, they with all ^H3605 their armies ^H4264, and camped ^H2583 by Gibeon ^H1391 and fought ^H3898 against ^H5921 it.

6 Then the men ^H376 of Gibeon ^H1391 sent ^H7971 word to Joshua ^H3091 to the camp ^H4264 at Gilgal ^H1537, saying ^H559, “Do not [fn]abandon ^{H7503 H3027 H4480} your slaves ^H5650; come ^H5927 up ^H5927 to us quickly ^H4120 and save ^H3467 us and help ^H5826 us, for all ^H3605 the kings ^H4428 of the Amorites ^H567 that live ^H3427 in the hill ^H2022 country ^H2022 have assembled ^H6908 against ^H413 us.” 7 So Joshua ^H3091 went ^H5927 up ^H5927 from Gilgal ^H1537, he and all ^H3605 the people ^H5971 of war ^H4421 with him and all ^H3605 the valiant ^H2428 warriors ^H1368. 8 And Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H559 to Joshua ^H3091, “Do not fear ^H3372 them, for I have given ^H5414 them into your hands ^H3027; not [fn]one ^H376 of them shall stand ^H5975 before ^H6440 you.” 9 So Joshua ^H3091 came ^H935 upon them suddenly ^H6597—he had gone up ^H5927, marching all ^H3605 night ^H3915 from Gilgal ^H1537. 10 And Yahweh ^H3068 threw ^H2000 them into ^H2000 confusion ^H2000 before ^H6440 Israel ^H3478, and He struck ^H5221 them with a great ^H1419 slaughter ^H4347 at Gibeon ^H1391 and pursued ^H7291 them by the way ^H1870 of the ascent ^H4608 of Beth-horon ^H1032 and struck ^H5221 them as far ^H5704 as Azekah ^H5825 and Makkedah ^H4719. 11 Now it happened as they fled ^H5127 from before ^H4480 H6440 Israel ^H3478, while they were at the descent ^H4174 of Beth-horon ^H1032, that Yahweh ^H3068 threw ^H7993 down large ^H1419 stones ^H68 from heaven ^H8064 on them as far ^H5704 as Azekah ^H5825, and they died ^H4191; there were more ^H7227 who ^H834 died ^H4191 [fn]from the hailstones ^H1259 H68 than ^H4480 those whom ^H834 the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 killed ^H2026 with the sword ^H2719.

12 Then ^H227 Joshua ^H3091 spoke ^H1696 to Yahweh ^H3068 in the day ^H3117 when Yahweh ^H3068 gave ^H5414 over the Amorites ^H567 before ^H6440 the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478, and he said ^H559 in the sight ^H5869 of Israel ^H3478,

“O sun ^H8121, stand ^H1826 still ^H1826 at Gibeon ^H1391,

And O moon ^H3394 in the valley ^H6010 of Aijalon ^H357.”

13 So the sun ^H8121 stood ^H1826 still ^H1826, and the moon ^H3394 stopped ^H5975,

Until ^H5704 the nation ^H1471 avenged ^H5358 themselves of their enemies ^H340.

Is it not written ^H3789 in the book ^H5612 of Jashar ^H3477? And the sun ^H8121 stood ^H5975 in the middle ^H2677 of the sky ^H8064 and did not hasten ^H213 to go ^H935 down for about ^H935 a whole ^H8549 day ^H3117. 14 And there was no ^H3808 day ^H3117 like that before ^H6440 it or after ^H310 it, when Yahweh ^H3068 listened ^H8085 to the voice ^H6963 of a man ^H376; for Yahweh ^H3068 fought ^H3898 for Israel ^H3478.

15 Then Joshua ^H3091 and all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478 with him returned ^H7725 to the camp ^H4264 to Gilgal ^H1537.

Joshua Captures Makkedah

16 And these ^H428 five ^H2568 kings ^H4428 fled ^H5127 and hid ^H2244 themselves in the cave ^H4631 at Makkedah ^H4719.

17 Then it was told ^H5046 Joshua ^H3091, saying ^H559, “The five ^H2568 kings ^H4428 have been found ^H4672 hidden ^H2244 in the cave ^H4631 at Makkedah ^H4719.” 18 And Joshua ^H3091 said ^H559, “Roll ^H1556 large ^H1419 stones ^H68 against ^H413 the mouth ^H6310 of the cave ^H4631 and assign ^H6485 men ^H376 by it to keep ^H8104 watch ^H8104 over them, 19 but as for you ^H859, do not stand ^H5975 there; pursue ^H7291 your enemies ^H340 and [fn]attack ^H2179 them in ^H2179 the ^H2179 rear ^H2179. Do not allow ^H5414 them to enter ^H935 their cities ^H5892, for Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430 has given ^H5414 them into your hand ^H3027.” 20 Now it happened ^H1961 when Joshua ^H3091 and the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 had finished ^H3615 striking ^H5221 them with a very ^H3966 great ^H1419 slaughter ^H4347 until ^H5704 they were completely ^H8552 destroyed, and the survivors ^H8300—those of them who survived ^H8277—[fn]had entered ^H935 the fortified ^H4013 cities ^H5892, 21 that all ^H3605 the people ^H5971 returned ^H7725 to the camp ^H4264 to Joshua ^H3091 at Makkedah ^H4719 in peace ^H7965. No ^H3808 one so much as [fn]lifted ^H2782 his tongue ^H3956 against any of the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478.

22 Then Joshua ^H3091 said ^H559, “Open ^H6605 the mouth ^H6310 of the cave ^H4631 and bring ^H3318 these ^H428 five ^H2568 kings ^H4428 out ^H3318 to me from the cave ^H4631.” 23 And they did ^H6213 so ^H3651 and brought ^H3318 these ^H428 five ^H2568 kings ^H4428 out ^H3318 to him from the cave ^H4631: the king ^H4428 of Jerusalem ^H3389, the king ^H4428 of Hebron ^H2275, the king ^H4428 of Jarmuth ^H3412, the king ^H4428 of Lachish ^H3923, and the king ^H4428 of Eglon ^H5700. 24 Now it happened that when they brought ^H3318 these ^H428 kings ^H4428 out ^H3318 to Joshua ^H3091, Joshua ^H3091 called ^H7121 for all ^H3605 the men ^H376 of Israel ^H3478 and said ^H559 to the chiefs ^H7101 of the men ^H376 of war ^H4421 who had gone ^H1980 with him, “Come ^H7126 near ^H7126, put ^H7760 your feet ^H7272 on the necks ^H6677 of these ^H428 kings ^H4428.” So they came ^H7126 near ^H7126 and put ^H7760 their feet ^H7272 on their necks ^H6677. 25 Joshua ^H3091 then said ^H559 to them, “Do not fear ^H3372 or be dismayed ^H2865! Be strong ^H2388 and courageous ^H553, for thus ^H3602 Yahweh ^H3068 will do ^H6213 to all ^H3605 your enemies ^H340 with whom ^H834 you fight ^H3898.” 26 So afterward ^H310 H3651 Joshua ^H3091 struck ^H5221 them and put ^H4191 them to ^H4191 death ^H4191, and he hanged ^H8518 them on five ^H2568 trees ^H6086; and they hung ^H8518 on the trees ^H6086 until ^H5704 evening ^H6153. 27 Now it happened ^H1961 that at [fn]sunset ^H8121 H935 Joshua ^H3091 gave ^H6680 a command ^H6680, and they took ^H3381 them down ^H3381 from the trees ^H6086 and threw ^H7993 them down into the cave ^H4631 where ^H834 H8033 they had hidden ^H2244 themselves, and they put ^H7760 large ^H1419 stones ^H68 over ^H5921 the mouth ^H6310 of the cave ^H4631, to this ^H2088 very ^H6106 day ^H3117.

28 Now Joshua ^H3091 captured ^H3920 Makkedah ^H4719 on that day ^H3117 and struck ^H5221 it and its king ^H4428 with the edge ^H6310 of the sword ^H2719; he [fn]devoted ^H2763 [fn]it to destruction ^H2763 and every ^H3605 [fn]person ^H5315 who ^H834 was in it. He left ^H7604 no ^H3808 survivor ^H8300. Thus he did ^H6213 to the king ^H4428 of Makkedah ^H4719 just ^H834 as he had done ^H6213 to the king ^H4428 of Jericho ^H3405.

Israel Captures Kings by Yahweh’s Sword

29 Then Joshua ^H3091 and all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478 with him passed ^H5674 on from Makkedah ^H4719 to Libnah ^H3841 and fought ^H3898 against ^H5973 Libnah ^H3841.

30 And Yahweh ^H3068 gave ^H5414 it also ^H1571 with its king ^H4428 into the hands ^H3027 of Israel ^H3478, and he struck ^H5221 it and every ^H3605 person ^H5315 who ^H834 was in it with the edge ^H6310 of the sword ^H2719. He left ^H7604 no ^H3808 survivor ^H8300 remaining ^H7604 in it. Thus he did ^H6213 to its king ^H4428 just ^H834 as he had done ^H6213 to the king ^H4428 of Jericho ^H3405.

31 And Joshua ^H3091 and all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478 with him passed ^H5674 on from Libnah ^H3841 to Lachish ^H3923, and they camped ^H2583 by it and fought ^H3898 against it. 32 And Yahweh ^H3068 gave ^H5414 Lachish ^H3923 into the hands ^H3027 of Israel ^H3478; and he captured ^H3920 it on the second ^H8145 day ^H3117 and struck ^H5221 it and every ^H3605 person ^H5315 who ^H834 was in it with the edge ^H6310 of the sword ^H2719, according to all ^H3605 that he had done ^H6213 to Libnah ^H3841.

33 Then ^H227 Horam ^H2036 king ^H4428 of Gezer ^H1507 came ^H5927 up ^H5927 to help ^H5826 Lachish ^H3923, and Joshua ^H3091 struck ^H5221 him and his people ^H5971 down ^H5221 until ^H5704 [fn]there was no ^H1115 survivor ^H8300 remaining ^H7604 for him.

34 And Joshua ^H3091 and all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478 with him passed ^H5674 on from Lachish ^H3923 to Eglon ^H5700, and they camped ^H2583 by it and fought ^H3898 against ^H5921 it. 35 And they captured ^H3920 it on that day ^H3117 and struck ^H5221 it with the edge ^H6310 of the sword ^H2719; and every ^H3605 person ^H5315 who ^H834 was in it, he devoted ^H2763 to destruction ^H2763 on that day ^H3117 according to all ^H3605 that he had done ^H6213 to Lachish ^H3923.

36 Then Joshua ^H3091 and all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478 with him went ^H5927 up ^H5927 from Eglon ^H5700 to Hebron ^H2275, and they fought ^H3898 against ^H5921 it. 37 And they captured ^H3920 it and struck ^H5221 it and its king ^H4428 and all ^H3605 its cities ^H5892 and all ^H3605 the persons ^H5315 who ^H834 were in it with the edge ^H6310 of the sword ^H2719. He left ^H7604 no ^H3808 survivor ^H8300 remaining ^H7604, according to all ^H3605 that he had done ^H6213 to Eglon ^H5700. And he devoted ^H2763 it and every ^H3605 person ^H5315 who ^H834 was in it to destruction ^H2763.

38 Then Joshua ^H3091 and all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478 with him returned ^H7725 to Debir ^H1688, and they fought ^H3898 against ^H5921 it. 39 And he captured ^H3920 it and its king ^H4428 and all ^H3605 its cities ^H5892, and they struck ^H5221 them with the edge ^H6310 of the sword ^H2719 and devoted ^H2763 every ^H3605 person ^H5315 who was in it to destruction ^H2763. He left ^H7604 no ^H3808 survivor ^H8300 remaining ^H7604. Just ^H834 as he had done ^H6213 to Hebron ^H2275, so ^H3651 he did ^H6213 to Debir ^H1688 and its king ^H4428, as he had also done ^H6213 to Libnah ^H3841 and its king ^H4428.

40 Thus Joshua ^H3091 struck ^H5221 all ^H3605 the land ^H776—the hill ^H2022 country ^H2022 and the [fn]Negev ^H5045 and the [fn]Shephelah ^H8219 and the slopes ^H794—as well as all ^H3605 their kings ^H4428. He left ^H7604 no ^H3808 survivor ^H8300 remaining ^H7604, but he devoted ^H2763 to destruction ^H2763 all ^H3605 who ^H5397 breathed ^H5397, just ^H834 as Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, had commanded ^H6680. 41 And Joshua ^H3091 struck ^H5221 them from Kadesh-barnea ^H6947 even as far ^H5704 as Gaza ^H5804, and all ^H3605 the country ^H776 of Goshen ^H1657 even as far ^H5704 as Gibeon ^H1391. 42 And Joshua ^H3091 captured ^H3920 all ^H3605 these ^H428 kings ^H4428 and their lands ^H776 at one ^H259 time ^H6471 because ^H3588 Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, fought ^H3898 for Israel ^H3478. 43 So Joshua ^H3091 and all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478 with him returned ^H7725 to the camp ^H4264 at Gilgal ^H1537.
