The Angel of Yahweh Speaks to Israel

1 Then the angel ^H4397 of Yahweh ^H3068 came ^H5927 up ^H5927 from Gilgal ^H1537 to Bochim ^H1066. And he said ^H559, “I brought ^H5927 you up ^H5927 out of Egypt ^H4714 and led ^H935 you into the land ^H776 which ^H834 I have sworn ^H7650 to your fathers ^H1; and I said ^H559, ‘I will never ^H3808 H5769 break ^H6565 My covenant ^H1285 with you,

2 and as for you, you shall cut ^H3772 no ^H3808 covenant ^H1285 with the inhabitants ^H3427 of this ^H2088 land ^H776; you shall tear ^H5422 down ^H5422 their altars ^H4196.’ But you have not listened ^H8085 to My voice ^H6963; what ^H4100 is this ^H2088 you have done ^H6213? 3 Therefore I also ^H1571 said ^H559, ‘I will not drive ^H1644 them out ^H1644 before ^H4480 H6440 you; but they will [fn]become ^H1961 as thorns in your sides ^H6654, and their gods ^H430 will become a snare ^H4170 to you.’” 4 So it happened ^H1961 that when the angel ^H4397 of Yahweh ^H3068 spoke ^H1696 these ^H428 words ^H1697 to all ^H3605 the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478, the people ^H5971 lifted ^H5375 up ^H5375 their voices ^H6963 and wept ^H1058. 5 So they named ^H7121 H8034 that place ^H4725 [fn]Bochim ^H1066; and there ^H8033 they sacrificed ^H2076 to Yahweh ^H3068.

Joshua’s Death and Burial

6 Then Joshua ^H3091 sent ^H7971 the people ^H5971 away ^H7971, and the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 went ^H1980 each ^H376 to his inheritance ^H5159 to possess ^H3423 the land ^H776.

Israel Serves Baals

11 Then the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 did ^H6213 what ^H7451 was ^H7451 evil ^H7451 in the eyes ^H5869 of Yahweh ^H3068 and [fn]served ^H5647 the Baals ^H1168,

Yahweh Raises Up Judges

16 Then Yahweh ^H3068 raised ^H6965 up ^H6965 judges ^H8199 [fn]who saved ^H3467 them from the hands ^H3027 of those who plundered ^H8154 them.

17 Yet ^H1571 they did not listen ^H8085 to their judges ^H8199 either ^H1571, for they played ^H2181 the ^H2181 harlot ^H2181 after ^H310 other ^H312 gods ^H430 and bowed ^H2331 themselves down ^H2331 to them. They turned ^H5493 aside ^H5493 quickly ^H4118 from the way ^H1870 in which ^H834 their fathers ^H1 had walked ^H1980 in obeying ^H8085 the commandments ^H4687 of Yahweh ^H3068; they did not do ^H6213 as their fathers. 18 Now when ^H3588 Yahweh ^H3068 raised ^H6965 up ^H6965 judges ^H8199 for them, Yahweh ^H3068 was with the judge ^H8199 and saved ^H3467 them from the hand ^H3027 of their enemies ^H340 all ^H3605 the days ^H3117 of the judge ^H8199; for Yahweh ^H3068 was moved ^H5162 to ^H5162 pity ^H5162 by their groaning ^H5009 because ^H4480 H6440 of those who oppressed ^H3905 and suppressed ^H1766 them. 19 But it happened ^H1961 when the judge ^H8199 died ^H4194, that they would turn ^H7725 back ^H7725 and act ^H7843 more ^H4480 corruptly ^H7843 than ^H4480 their fathers ^H1, in following ^H1980 H310 other ^H312 gods ^H430 to serve ^H5647 them and bow ^H2331 down ^H2331 to them; they did not abandon ^H5307 their practices ^H4611 or their stubborn ^H7186 ways ^H1870. 20 So the anger ^H639 of Yahweh ^H3068 burned ^H2734 against Israel ^H3478, and He said ^H559, “Because ^H3282 H834 this ^H2088 nation ^H1471 has trespassed ^H5674 against My covenant ^H1285 which ^H834 I commanded ^H6680 their fathers ^H1 and has not listened ^H8085 to My voice ^H6963, 21 I also ^H1571 will no ^H3808 longer ^H3254 dispossess ^H3423 before ^H4480 H6440 them any ^H376 of the nations ^H1471 which ^H834 Joshua ^H3091 left ^H5800 when he died ^H4191, 22 in order ^H4616 to test ^H5254 Israel ^H3478 by them, whether they will keep ^H8104 the way ^H1870 of Yahweh ^H3068 to walk ^H1980 in it as their fathers ^H1 [fn]did ^H8104, or ^H518 not.” 23 So Yahweh ^H3068 allowed ^H5117 those ^H428 nations ^H1471 to ^H5117 rest ^H5117, not dispossessing ^H3423 them quickly ^H4118; and He did not give ^H5414 them into the hand ^H3027 of Joshua ^H3091.
