The Day of Atonement

1 Now Yahweh ^H3068 spoke ^H1696 to Moses ^H4872 after ^H310 the death ^H4194 of the two ^H8147 sons ^H1121 of Aaron ^H175, when they came ^H7126 near ^H7126 the presence ^H6440 of Yahweh ^H3068 and died ^H4191.

2 And Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H559 to Moses ^H4872:

“Tell ^H1696 your brother ^H251 Aaron ^H175 that he shall not enter ^H935 at any ^H3605 time ^H6256 into the holy ^H6944 place inside ^H4480 H1004 the veil ^H6532, before ^H413 H6440 the [fn]mercy ^H3727 seat ^H3727 which ^H834 is on the ark ^H727, so ^H3808 that he will not die ^H4191; for I will appear ^H7200 in the cloud ^H6051 over ^H5921 the mercy ^H3727 seat ^H3727. 3 Aaron ^H175 shall enter ^H935 the holy ^H6944 place with this ^H2088: with a bull ^H6499 from the herd ^H1121 H1241 for a sin ^H2403 offering ^H2403 and a ram ^H352 for a burnt ^H5930 offering ^H5930. 4 He shall put ^H3847 on ^H3847 the holy ^H6944 linen ^H906 tunic ^H3801, and the linen ^H906 undergarments ^H4370 shall be next ^H5921 to his [fn]body ^H1320, and he shall be girded ^H2296 with the linen ^H906 sash ^H73 and attired ^H6801 with the linen ^H906 turban ^H4701 (these ^H1992 are holy ^H6944 garments ^H899). Then he shall bathe ^H7364 his [fn]body ^H1320 in water ^H4325 and put ^H3847 them on ^H3847. 5 And he shall take ^H3947 from the congregation ^H5712 of the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 two ^H8147 male ^H8163 goats ^H5795 for a sin ^H2403 offering ^H2403 and one ^H259 ram ^H352 for a burnt ^H5930 offering ^H5930. 6 Then Aaron ^H175 shall bring ^H7126 near ^H7126 the bull ^H6499 for the sin ^H2403 offering ^H2403 which ^H834 is for himself, that he may make ^H3722 atonement ^H3722 for himself and for his household ^H1004. 7 And he shall take ^H3947 the two ^H8147 goats ^H8163 and present ^H5975 them before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068 at the doorway ^H6607 of the tent ^H168 of meeting ^H4150. 8 And Aaron ^H175 shall cast ^H5414 lots ^H1486 for the two ^H8147 goats ^H8163, one ^H259 lot ^H1486 for Yahweh ^H3068 and the other ^H259 lot ^H1486 for the [fn]scapegoat ^H5799. 9 Then Aaron ^H175 shall bring ^H7126 near ^H7126 the goat ^H5795 on which ^H834 the lot ^H1486 for Yahweh ^H3068 fell ^H5927, and he shall offer ^H6213 it as a sin ^H2403 offering ^H2403. 10 But the goat ^H5795 on which ^H834 the lot ^H1486 for the [fn]scapegoat ^H5799 fell ^H5927 shall be presented ^H5975 alive ^H2416 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068, to make ^H3722 atonement ^H3722 upon it, to send ^H7971 it out ^H7971 into the wilderness ^H4057 as the [fn]scapegoat ^H5799.

11 “Then Aaron ^H175 shall bring ^H7126 near ^H7126 the bull ^H6499 of the sin ^H2403 offering ^H2403, which ^H834 is for himself, and make ^H3722 atonement ^H3722 for himself and for his household ^H1004, and he shall slaughter ^H7819 the bull ^H6499 of the sin ^H2403 offering ^H2403 which ^H834 is for himself. 12 And he shall take ^H3947 a firepan ^H4289 full ^H4393 of coals ^H1513 of fire ^H784 from upon the altar ^H4196 before ^H4480 H6440 Yahweh ^H3068 and [fn]two handfuls ^H4393 H2651 of finely ^H1851 ground ^H1851 fragrant ^H5561 incense ^H7004, and bring ^H935 it inside ^H4480 H1004 the veil ^H6532. 13 And he shall put ^H5414 the incense ^H7004 on the fire ^H784 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068, that the cloud ^H6051 of incense ^H7004 may cover ^H3680 the mercy ^H3727 seat ^H3727 that is on the ark of the testimony ^H5715, so that he will not ^H3808 die ^H4191. 14 Moreover, he shall take ^H3947 some ^H4480 of the blood ^H1818 of the bull ^H6499 and sprinkle ^H5137 it with his finger ^H676 on the mercy ^H3727 seat ^H3727 on the east ^H6924 side; also in front ^H6440 of the mercy ^H3727 seat ^H3727 he shall sprinkle ^H5137 some ^H4480 of the blood ^H1818 with his finger ^H676 seven ^H7651 times ^H6471.

15 “Then he shall slaughter ^H7819 the goat ^H5795 of the sin ^H2403 offering ^H2403 which ^H834 is for the people ^H5971 and bring ^H935 its blood ^H1818 inside ^{H413 H4480 H1004} the veil ^H6532 and do ^H6213 with its blood ^H1818 as he did ^H6213 with the blood ^H1818 of the bull ^H6499. And he shall sprinkle ^H5137 it on the mercy ^H3727 seat ^H3727 and in front ^H6440 of the mercy ^H3727 seat ^H3727. 16 So he shall make ^H3722 atonement ^H3722 for the holy ^H6944 place because ^H4480 of the uncleanness ^H2932 of the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 and because ^H4480 of their transgressions ^H6588 in regard to all ^H3605 their sins ^H2403; and thus ^H3651 he shall do ^H6213 for the tent ^H168 of meeting ^H4150 which abides ^H7931 with them in the midst ^H8432 of their uncleanness ^H2932. 17 Now when he goes ^H935 in ^H935 to make ^H3722 atonement ^H3722 in the holy ^H6944 place, no ^H3808 one ^H120 shall be in the tent ^H168 of meeting ^H4150 until ^H5704 he comes ^H3318 out ^H3318, that he may make ^H3722 atonement ^H3722 for himself and for his household ^H1004 and for all ^H3605 the assembly ^H6951 of Israel ^H3478. 18 Then he shall go ^H3318 out ^H3318 to the altar ^H4196 that is before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068 and make ^H3722 atonement ^H3722 for it. And he shall take ^H3947 some ^H4480 of the blood ^H1818 of the bull ^H6499 and of the blood ^H1818 of the goat ^H5795, and put ^H5414 it on the horns ^H7161 of the altar ^H4196 on all ^H5439 sides ^H5439. 19 With his finger ^H676 he shall sprinkle ^H5137 some ^H4480 of the blood ^H1818 on it seven ^H7651 times ^H6471 and cleanse ^H2891 it and set ^H6942 it apart ^H6942 as ^H6942 holy ^H6942 from the uncleanness ^H2932 of the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478.

20 “And when he finishes ^H3615 making ^H3722 atonement ^H3722 for the holy ^H6944 place and the tent ^H168 of meeting ^H4150 and the altar ^H4196, he shall bring ^H7126 near ^H7126 the live ^H2416 goat ^H5795. 21 Then Aaron ^H175 shall lay ^H5564 both ^H8147 of his hands ^H3027 on the head ^H7218 of the live ^H2416 goat ^H5795, and confess ^H3034 over ^H5921 it all ^H3605 the iniquities ^H5771 of the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 and all ^H3605 their transgressions ^H6588 [fn]in regard to all ^H3605 their sins ^H2403; and he shall lay ^H5414 them on the head ^H7218 of the goat ^H5795 and send ^H7971 it out ^H7971 into the wilderness ^H4057 by the hand ^H3027 of a man ^H376 ready ^H6261 to do this. 22 And the goat ^H5795 shall bear ^H5375 on itself all ^H3605 their iniquities ^H5771 to an isolated ^H1509 land ^H776; and he shall send ^H7971 out ^H7971 the goat ^H8163 in the wilderness ^H4057.

23 “Then Aaron ^H175 shall come ^H935 into the tent ^H168 of meeting ^H4150 and take ^H6584 off ^H6584 the linen ^H906 garments ^H899 which ^H834 he put ^H3847 on ^H3847 when he went ^H935 into the holy ^H6944 place and shall leave ^H5117 them there ^H8033. 24 And he shall bathe ^H7364 his [fn]body ^H1320 with water ^H4325 in a holy ^H6918 place ^H4725 and put ^H3847 on ^H3847 his clothes ^H899 and come ^H3318 forth ^H3318, and offer ^H6213 his burnt ^H5930 offering ^H5930 and the burnt ^H5930 offering ^H5930 of the people ^H5971 and make ^H3722 atonement ^H3722 for himself and for the people ^H5971. 25 Then he shall offer ^H6999 up ^H6999 in ^H6999 smoke ^H6999 the fat ^H2459 of the sin ^H2403 offering ^H2403 on the altar ^H4196. 26 And the one who sent ^H7971 the goat ^H8163 out ^H7971 as the [fn]scapegoat ^H5799 shall wash ^H3526 his clothes ^H899 and bathe ^H7364 his [fn]body ^H1320 with water ^H4325; then afterward ^H310 H3651 he shall come ^H935 into the camp ^H4264. 27 But the bull ^H6499 of the sin ^H2403 offering ^H2403 and the goat ^H8163 of the sin ^H2403 offering ^H2403, whose ^H834 blood ^H1818 was brought ^H935 in ^H935 to make ^H3722 atonement ^H3722 in the holy ^H6944 place, shall be taken ^H3318 outside ^{H413 H4480 H2351} the camp ^H4264, and they shall burn ^H8313 their hides ^H5785, their flesh ^H1320, and their refuse ^H6569 in the fire ^H784. 28 Then the one who burns ^H8313 them shall wash ^H3526 his clothes ^H899 and bathe ^H7364 his body ^H1320 with water ^H4325, and afterward ^H310 H3651 he shall come ^H935 into the camp ^H4264.

29 “And this shall be a perpetual ^H5769 statute ^H2708 for you: in the seventh ^H7637 month ^H2320, on the tenth ^H6218 day of the month ^H2320, you shall humble ^H6031 your souls ^H5315 and not do ^H6213 any ^H3605 work ^H4399, whether the native ^H249 or the sojourner ^H1616 who sojourns ^H1481 among ^H8432 you; 30 for it is on this ^H2088 day ^H3117 that [fn]atonement ^H3722 shall be made ^H3722 for you to cleanse ^H2891 you; you will be ^H2891 clean ^H2891 from all ^H3605 your sins ^H2403 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068. 31 It is to be a sabbath ^H7676 of solemn ^H7677 rest ^H7677 for you, that you may humble ^H6031 your souls ^H5315; it is a perpetual ^H5769 statute ^H2708. 32 So the priest ^H3548 who ^H834 is anointed ^H4886 and [fn]ordained ^H4390 H3027 to minister ^H3547 as ^H3547 a ^H3547 priest ^H3547 in ^H8478 his father’s ^H1 place ^H8478 shall make ^H3722 atonement ^H3722: he shall thus put ^H3847 on ^H3847 the linen ^H906 garments ^H899, the holy ^H6944 garments ^H899, 33 and make ^H3722 atonement ^H3722 for the holy ^H6944 sanctuary ^H4720, and he shall make ^H3722 atonement ^H3722 for the tent ^H168 of meeting ^H4150 and for the altar ^H4196. He shall also make ^H3722 atonement ^H3722 for the priests ^H3548 and for all ^H3605 the people ^H5971 of the assembly ^H6951. 34 Now you shall have ^H1961 this ^H2088 as a perpetual ^H5769 statute ^H2708, to make ^H3722 atonement ^H3722 for the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 for all ^H3605 their sins ^H2403 once ^H259 every year ^H8141.” And just ^H834 as Yahweh ^H3068 had commanded ^H6680 Moses ^H4872, so he did ^H6213.
