The Lord’s Prayer

1 And it happened ^G1096 that while ^G1722 [fn]Jesus was praying ^G4336 in a certain ^G5100 place ^G5117, after ^G5613 He had finished ^G3973, one ^G5100 of His disciples ^G3101 said ^G3004 to Him, “Lord ^G2962, teach ^G1321 us to pray ^G4336 just ^G2531 as John ^G2491 also ^G2532 taught ^G1321 his disciples ^G3101.”

2 And He said ^G3004 to them, “When ^G3752 you pray ^G4336, say ^G3004:

‘[fn]Father ^G3962, hallowed ^G37 be Your name ^G3686.

Your kingdom ^G932 come ^G2064.

3 ‘Give ^G1325 us each ^G2596 day ^G2250 our [fn]daily ^G1967 bread ^G740.

4 ‘And forgive ^G863 us our sins ^G266,

For we ourselves ^G846 also ^G2532 forgive ^G863 everyone ^G3956 who is indebted ^G3784 to us.

And lead ^G1533 us not into temptation ^G3986.’”

5 Then ^G2532 He said ^G3004 to them, “Which ^G5101 of you has ^G2192 a friend ^G5384 and will go ^G4198 to him at midnight ^G3317 and say ^G3004 to him, ‘Friend ^G5384, lend ^G5531 me three ^G5140 loaves ^G740, 6 for a friend ^G5384 of mine ^G1473 has come ^G3854 to me from a journey ^G3598, and I have ^G2192 nothing ^G3756 to set ^G3908 before ^G3908 him’; 7 and from ^G2081 inside ^G2081 he answers ^G611 and says ^G3004, ‘Do not bother ^G2873 G3930 me; the door ^G2374 has already ^G2235 been shut ^G2808 and my children ^G3813 [fn]and I are in bed ^G2845; I cannot ^G1410 G3756 rise ^G450 up ^G450 and give ^G1325 you anything.’ 8 I tell ^G3004 you, even ^G2532 though ^G1487 he will not arise ^G450 and give ^G1325 him anything because ^G1223 he is his friend ^G5384, yet ^G1065 because ^G1223 of his [fn]persistence ^G335 he will get ^G1453 up ^G1453 and give ^G1325 him as much ^G3745 as he needs ^G5535.

9 “So ^G2532 I say ^G3004 to you, [fn]ask ^G154, and it will be given ^G1325 to you; [fn]seek ^G2212, and you will find ^G2147; [fn]knock ^G2925, and it will be opened ^G455 to you. 10 For everyone ^G3956 who asks ^G154, receives ^G2983; and he who seeks ^G2212, finds ^G2147; and to him who knocks ^G2925, it will be opened ^G455. 11 But ^G1161 what ^G5101 father ^G3962 among you, if his son ^G5207 asks ^G154 for a [fn]fish ^G2486, will give ^G1929 him a snake ^G3789 instead ^G473 of ^G473 a fish ^G2486? 12 Or ^G2228, if his son asks ^G154 for an egg ^G5609, will give ^G1929 him a scorpion ^G4651? 13 If ^G1487 you then ^G3767, being ^G5225 evil ^G4190, know ^G6063 how ^G6063 to give ^G1325 good ^G18 gifts ^G1390 to your children ^G5043, how ^G4214 much ^G4214 more ^G3123 will your [fn]heavenly ^G1537 G3772 Father ^G3962 give ^G1325 the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151 to those ^G3588 who ask ^G154 Him?”

A Kingdom Divided

14 And He was casting ^G1544 out ^G1544 a demon ^G1140, and it was mute ^G2974. Now ^G1161 it happened ^G1096 that when the demon ^G1140 had gone ^G1831 out, the mute ^G2974 man ^G2974 spoke ^G2980, and the crowds ^G3793 marveled ^G2296.

15 But some ^G5100 of them said ^G3004, “He casts ^G1544 out ^G1544 demons ^G1140 by Beelzebul ^G954, the ruler ^G758 of the demons ^G1140.” 16 And others ^G2087, testing ^G3985 Him, were seeking ^G2212 from Him [fn]a sign ^G4592 from heaven ^G3772. 17 But He knew ^G6063 their thoughts ^G1270 and said ^G3004 to them, “[fn]Any ^G3956 kingdom ^G932 divided ^G1266 against ^G1909 itself ^G1438 is laid ^G2049 waste ^G2049, and a house ^G3624 divided against ^G1909 [fn]itself ^G3624 falls ^G4098. 18 But if ^G1487 Satan ^G4567 also ^G2532 is divided ^G1266 against ^G1909 himself ^G1438, how ^G4459 will his kingdom ^G932 stand ^G2476? For you say ^G3004 that I cast ^G1544 out ^G1544 demons ^G1140 by Beelzebul ^G954. 19 And if ^G1487 I by Beelzebul ^G954 cast ^G1544 out ^G1544 demons ^G1140, by whom ^G5101 do your sons ^G5207 cast ^G1544 them out ^G1544? For this reason ^G1223 G3778, they will be your judges ^G2923. 20 But if ^G1487 I cast ^G1544 out ^G1544 demons ^G1140 by the finger ^G1147 of God ^G2316, then ^G686 the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316 has come ^G5348 upon you. 21 When ^G3752 [fn]a strong ^G2478 man, fully ^G2528 armed ^G2528, guards ^G5442 his own ^G1438 house ^G833, his possessions ^G5225 are [fn]undisturbed ^G1722 G1515. 22 But when ^G1875 someone stronger ^G2478 than he attacks ^G1904 him and overpowers ^G3528 him, he takes ^G142 away ^G142 from him all ^G3833 his armor ^G3833 on which ^G3739 he had relied ^G3982 and distributes ^G1239 his plunder ^G4661. 23 He who is not with Me is against ^G2596 Me and he who does not gather ^G4863 with Me, scatters ^G4650.

27 Now ^G1161 it happened ^G1096 that while ^G1722 [fn]Jesus was saying ^G3004 these ^G3778 things ^G3778, one ^G5100 of the women ^G1135 in the crowd ^G3793 raised ^G1869 her voice ^G5456 and said ^G3004 to Him, “Blessed ^G3107 is the womb ^G2836 that bore ^G941 You and the breasts ^G3149 at which ^G3739 You nursed ^G2337.” 28 But He said ^G3004, “On the contrary ^G3303 G3767, blessed ^G3107 are those ^G3588 who hear ^G191 the word ^G3056 of God ^G2316 and keep ^G5442 it.”

The Sign of Jonah

29 Now as the crowds ^G3793 were increasing ^G1865, He began ^G757 to say ^G3004, “This ^G3778 generation ^G1074 is a wicked ^G4190 generation ^G1074; it seeks ^G2212 [fn]a sign ^G4592, and yet no ^G3756 [fn]sign ^G4592 will be given ^G1325 to it but the [fn]sign ^G4592 of Jonah ^G2495.

30 For just ^G2531 as Jonah ^G2495 became ^G1096 [fn]a sign ^G4592 to the Ninevites ^G3536, so ^G3779 will the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 be to this ^G3778 generation ^G1074. 31 The Queen ^G938 of the South ^G3558 will rise ^G1453 up ^G1453 at the judgment ^G2920 with the men ^G435 of this ^G3778 generation ^G1074 and condemn ^G2632 them, because ^G3754 she came ^G2064 from the ends ^G4009 of the earth ^G1093 to hear ^G191 the wisdom ^G4678 of Solomon ^G4672. And behold ^G2400, something ^G4183 greater ^G4183 than Solomon ^G4672 is here ^G5602. 32 The men ^G435 of Nineveh ^G3536 will stand ^G450 up ^G450 at the judgment ^G2920 with this ^G3778 generation ^G1074 and condemn ^G2632 it, because ^G3754 they repented ^G3340 at the preaching ^G2782 of Jonah ^G2495. And behold ^G2400, something ^G4183 greater ^G4183 than Jonah ^G2495 is here ^G5602.

33 “No ^G3762 one ^G3762, after lighting ^G681 a lamp ^G3088, puts ^G5087 it away ^G5087 in a cellar ^G2926 nor ^G3761 under ^G5259 a basket ^G3426, but on the lampstand ^G3087, so ^G2443 that those ^G3588 who enter ^G1531 may see ^G991 the light ^G5338. 34 The eye ^G3788 is the lamp ^G3088 of your body ^G4983; when ^G3752 your eye ^G3788 is [fn]clear ^G573, your whole ^G3650 body ^G4983 also ^G2532 is full ^G5460 of ^G5460 light ^G5460, but when ^G1875 it is [fn]bad ^G4190, your body ^G4983 also ^G2532 is full ^G4652 of ^G4652 darkness ^G4652. 35 Therefore ^G3767 watch ^G4648 out ^G4648 that the light ^G5457 in you is not darkness ^G4655. 36 If ^G1487 therefore ^G3767 your whole ^G3650 body ^G4983 is full ^G5460 of ^G5460 light ^G5460, with no ^G3361 G5100 dark ^G4652 part ^G3313 in ^G3313 it, it will be wholly ^G3650 illumined ^G5460, as when ^G3752 the lamp ^G3088 illumines ^G5461 you with its rays ^G796.”

Woes to the Pharisees and Lawyers

37 Now ^G1161 when ^G1722 He had spoken ^G2980, a Pharisee ^G5330 *asked ^G2065 Him to have ^G709 a meal ^G709 with him. And He went ^G1525 in ^G1525 and reclined ^G377 at the table.

38 But when the Pharisee ^G5330 saw ^G3708 it, he marveled ^G2296 that He had not first ^G4413 [fn]ceremonially ^G907 washed ^G907 before ^G4253 the [fn]meal ^G712. 39 But the Lord ^G2962 said ^G3004 to him, “Now ^G3568 you Pharisees ^G5330 clean ^G2511 the outside ^G1855 of the cup ^G4221 and of the platter ^G4094, but [fn]inside ^G2081 of you, you are full ^G1073 of robbery ^G724 and wickedness ^G4189. 40 You foolish ^G878 ones ^G878, did not He who made ^G4160 the outside ^G1855 make ^G4160 the inside ^G2081 also ^G2532? 41 But give ^G1325 that which is ^G1751 within ^G1751 as charity ^G1654, and [fn]then ^G2400 all ^G3956 things ^G3956 are clean ^G2513 for you.

42 “But woe ^G3759 to you Pharisees ^G5330! For you pay ^G586 tithe ^G586 of mint ^G2238 and rue ^G4076 and every ^G3956 kind of garden ^G3001 herb ^G3001, and yet disregard ^G3928 justice ^G2920 and the love ^G26 of God ^G2316, but these ^G3778 are the things ^G3778 you should ^G1163 have done ^G4160 without ^G3361 neglecting ^G3935 the others ^G2548. 43 Woe ^G3759 to you Pharisees ^G5330! For you love ^G25 the best ^G4410 seat ^G4410 in the synagogues ^G4864 and the respectful greetings ^G783 in the marketplaces ^G58. 44 Woe ^G3759 to you! For you are like ^G5613 [fn]concealed ^G82 tombs ^G3419, and the people ^G444 who walk ^G4043 over ^G1883 them are unaware ^G3756 G6063 of it.”

45 Now one ^G5100 of the scholars ^G3544 of ^G3544 the ^G3544 Law ^G3544 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to Him, “Teacher ^G1320, when You say ^G3004 these things ^G3778, You insult ^G5195 us too ^G2532.” 46 But He said ^G3004, “Woe ^G3759 to you scholars ^G3544 of ^G3544 the ^G3544 Law ^G3544 as well ^G2532! For you weigh ^G5412 men ^G444 down ^G5412 with burdens ^G5413 hard ^G1419 to ^G1419 bear ^G1419, and ^G2532 you yourselves ^G846 will not even touch ^G4379 the burdens ^G5413 with one ^G1520 of your fingers ^G1147. 47 Woe ^G3759 to you! For you build ^G3618 the [fn]tombs ^G3419 of the prophets ^G4396, but your fathers ^G3962 killed ^G615 them. 48 So ^G686 you are witnesses ^G3144 and approve ^G4909 the deeds ^G2041 of your fathers ^G3962; because ^G3754 it was they who killed ^G615 them, and you build ^G3618 their tombs. 49 For this ^G3778 reason ^G1223 also ^G2532 the wisdom ^G4678 of God ^G2316 said ^G3004, ‘I will send ^G649 to them prophets ^G4396 and apostles ^G652, and some of them they will kill ^G615 and some they will [fn]persecute ^G1377, 50 so ^G2443 that the blood ^G129 of all ^G3956 the prophets ^G4396, shed ^G1632 since ^G575 the foundation ^G2602 of the world ^G2889, may be [fn]charged ^G1567 against ^G575 this ^G3778 generation ^G1074, 51 from the blood ^G129 of Abel ^G6 to the blood ^G129 of Zechariah ^G2197, who was killed ^G622 between ^G3342 the altar ^G2379 and the house ^G3624 of God; yes ^G3483, I tell ^G3004 you, it shall be [fn]charged ^G1567 against ^G575 this ^G3778 generation ^G1074.’ 52 Woe ^G3759 to you, scholars ^G3544 of ^G3544 the ^G3544 Law ^G3544! For you have taken ^G142 away ^G142 the key ^G2807 of knowledge ^G1108; you yourselves ^G846 did not enter ^G1525, and you hindered ^G2967 those ^G3588 who were entering ^G1525.”

53 And when He left ^G1831 there ^G2547, the scribes ^G1122 and the Pharisees ^G5330 began ^G757 to be ^G1758 very ^G1171 hostile ^G1758 and to question ^G653 Him closely ^G653 on many ^G4183 subjects ^G4183, 54 plotting ^G1748 to catch ^G2340 [fn]Him in ^G1748 something ^G5100 He might say ^G1537 G4750.
