Jesus Heals on the Sabbath
1 And it happened G1096 that when G1722 He went G2064 into the house G3624 of one G5100 of the [fn]leaders G758 of the Pharisees G5330 on the Sabbath G4521 to eat G2068 bread G740, they were watching G3906 Him closely G3906.
2 And behold G2400, in front G1715 of Him was a man G444 suffering G5203 from G5203 dropsy G5203. 3 And Jesus G2424 answered G611 and spoke G3004 to the scholars G3544 of G3544 the G3544 Law G3544 and Pharisees G5330, saying G3004, “Is it lawful G1832 to heal G2323 on the Sabbath G4521, or G2228 not?” 4 But they were G2270 silent G2270. And He took G1949 hold G1949 of him, healed G2390 him, and sent G630 him away G630. 5 And He said G3004 to them, “[fn]Which G5101 one of you will have a son G5207 or G2228 an ox G1016 fall G4098 into a well G5421, and will not immediately G2112 pull G385 him out G385 on a Sabbath G4521 day G2250?” 6 And they could G2480 make G470 no G3756 reply G470 to this G3778.
Parable of the Wedding Feast
7 And He was telling G3004 a parable G3850 to the invited G2564 guests G2564 when He noticed G1907 how G4459 they were picking G1586 out G1586 the places G4411 of G4411 honor G4411 at the table, saying G3004 to them,
8 “When G3752 you are invited G2564 by someone G5100 to a wedding G1062 feast G1062, do not recline G2625 at the place G4411 of G4411 honor G4411, lest someone more G1784 highly G1784 regarded G1784 than you be G1510 invited G2564 by him, 9 and he who invited G2564 you both G2532 G846 will come G2064 and say G3004 to you, ‘Give G1325 your place G5117 to this G3778 man G3778,’ and then G5119 in shame G152 you [fn]proceed G757 to occupy G2722 the last G2078 place G5117. 10 But when G3752 you are invited G2564, go G4198 and recline G377 at the last G2078 place G5117, so G2443 that when G3752 the one who has invited G2564 you comes G2064, he may say G3004 to you, ‘Friend G5384, move G4320 up G4320 higher G511’; then G5119 you will have honor G1391 in G1799 the G1799 sight G1799 of G1799 all G3956 who recline at the table G4873 with you. 11 For everyone G3956 who exalts G5312 himself G1438 will be humbled G5013, and he who humbles G5013 himself G1438 will be exalted G5312.”
12 And He also G2532 went on to say G3004 to the one who had invited G2564 Him, “When G3752 you give G4160 a luncheon G712 or G2228 a dinner G1173, do not invite G5455 your friends G5384 or G3366 your brothers G80 or G3366 your relatives G4773 or G3366 rich G4145 neighbors G1069, lest G3379 they also G2532 invite G479 you in G479 return G479 and that will be your repayment G468. 13 But when G3752 you give G4160 a [fn]reception G1403, invite G2564 the poor G4434, the crippled G376, the lame G5560, the blind G5185, 14 and you will be blessed G3107, since G3754 they [fn]do not have G2192 the means to repay G467 you; for it will be repaid G467 to you G4671 at the resurrection G386 of the righteous G1342.”
15 But when one G5100 of those G3588 who were reclining G4873 at the table with Him heard G191 this G3778, he said G3004 to Him, “Blessed G3107 is everyone G3748 who G3748 will eat G2068 bread G740 in the kingdom G932 of God G2316!”
Parable of the Dinner
16 And He said G3004 to him, “A man G444 was giving G4160 a big G3173 dinner G1173, and he invited G2564 many G4183. 17 And at the dinner G1173 hour G5610 he sent G649 his slave G1401 to say G3004 to those G3588 who had been invited G2564, ‘Come G2064, for everything is ready G2092 now G2235.’ 18 But they all G3956 alike G575 G1520 began G757 to make G3868 excuses G3868. The first G4413 one G4413 said G3004 to him, ‘I have bought G59 a [fn]piece G68 of G68 land G68 and I need G318 to go G1831 out G1831 and look G3708 at it. I ask you G2065, consider G2192 me excused G3868.’ 19 And another G2087 one G2087 said G3004, ‘I have bought G59 five G4002 yoke G2201 of oxen G1016, and I am going G4198 to try G1381 them out G1381. I ask you G2065, consider G2192 me excused G3868.’ 20 And another G2087 one G2087 said G3004, ‘I have married G1060 a wife G1135, and for that reason G1223 I cannot G1410 G3756 come G2064.’ 21 And when the slave G1401 came G3854 back, he reported G518 these G3778 things G3778 to his master G2962. Then G5119 the head G3617 of G3617 the G3617 household G3617 became angry G3710 and said G3004 to his slave G1401, ‘Go G1831 out G1831 at once G5030 into the streets G4116 and lanes G4505 of the city G4172 and bring G1521 in G1521 here G5602 the poor G4434 and crippled G376 and blind G5185 and lame G5560.’ 22 And the slave G1401 said G3004, ‘Master G2962, what G3739 you commanded G2004 has been G1096 done G1096, and still G2089 there is room G5117.’ 23 And the master G2962 said G3004 to the slave G1401, ‘Go G1831 out G1831 into the highways G3598 and along the [fn]fences G5418, and compel G315 them to come G1525 in G1525, so G2443 that my house G3624 may be filled G1072. 24 For I tell G3004 you, none G3762 of those G1565 men G435 who were invited G2564 shall taste G1089 of my dinner G1173.’”
The Cost of Discipleship
25 Now G1161 many G4183 crowds G3793 were going G4848 along G4848 with Him, and He turned G4762 and said G3004 to them,
26 “If G1487 anyone G5100 comes G2064 to Me, and does not [fn]hate G3404 his own father G3962 and mother G3384 and wife G1135 and children G5043 and brothers G80 and sisters G79, yes G2089, and even G2532 his own G1438 life G5590, he cannot G1410 G3756 be My disciple G3101. 27 Whoever G3748 does not carry G941 his own G1438 cross G4716 and come G2064 after G3694 Me cannot G1410 G3756 be My disciple G3101. 28 For which G5101 one of you, when he wants G2309 to build G3618 a tower G4444, does not first G4413 sit G2523 down G2523 and calculate G5585 the cost G1160 to see if G1487 he has G2192 enough to complete G535 it? 29 Lest G2443 G3361, when G4218 he has laid G5087 a foundation G2310 and is G2480 not able G2480 to finish G1615, all G3956 who observe G2334 it begin G757 to ridicule G1702 him, 30 saying G3004, ‘This G3778 man G444 began G757 to build G3618 and was G2480 not able G2480 to finish G1615.’ 31 Or G2228 what G5101 king G935, when he sets G4198 out G4198 to meet G4820 another G2087 king G935 in battle G4171, will not first G4413 sit G2523 down G2523 and consider G1011 whether G1487 he is strong G1415 enough G1415 with ten G1176 thousand G5505 men to encounter G5221 the one coming G2064 against G1909 him with twenty G1501 thousand G5505? 32 Or G1161 else G1490, while the other G846 is still G2089 far G4206 away G4206, he sends G649 [fn]a delegation G4242 and asks G2065 for terms G4314 of peace G1515. 33 So G3779 then G3767, none G3956 G3756 of you can G1410 be My disciple G3101 who G3739 does not give G657 up all G3956 his own G1438 possessions G5225.
34 “Therefore G3767, salt G217 is good G2570, but if G1437 even G2532 salt G217 has become G3471 tasteless G3471, with what G5101 will it be seasoned G741? 35 It is useless G3777 G2111 either G3777 for the soil G1093 or G3777 for the manure G2874 pile G2874; it is thrown G906 out. He who has G2192 ears G3775 to hear G191, [fn]let him hear G191.”
