Lord of the Sabbath
1 Now G1161 it happened G1096 that on a Sabbath G4521 He was passing G1279 through G1223 some grainfields G4702, and His disciples G3101 were picking G5089 and eating G2068 the heads G4719 of G4719 grain G4719, rubbing G5597 them in their hands G5495.
2 But some G5100 of the Pharisees G5330 said G3004, “Why G5101 do you do G4160 what G3739 is not lawful G1832 on the Sabbath G4521?” 3 And Jesus G2424 answered G611 and said G3004 to them, “Have you never G3761 read G314 what G3739 David G1138 did G4160 when G3698 he was hungry G3983, he and those G3588 who were with him, 4 how G5613 he entered G1525 the house G3624 of God G2316, and took G2983 and ate G2068 the [fn]consecrated G4286 bread G740 which G3739 is not lawful G1832 for any to eat G2068 except G1508 the priests G2409 alone G3441, and gave G1325 it to his companions G3588 G3326?” 5 And He was saying G3004 to them, “The Son G5207 of Man G444 is Lord G2962 of the Sabbath G4521.”
Jesus Heals a Man on the Sabbath
6 Now it happened G1096 that on another G2087 Sabbath G4521 He entered G1525 the synagogue G4864 and was teaching G1321; and there was a man G444 there G1563 [fn]whose G2532 G846 right G1188 hand G5495 was withered G3584.
7 And the scribes G1122 and the Pharisees G5330 were watching G3906 Him closely G3906 to see if G1487 He heals G2323 on the Sabbath G4521, so G2443 that they might find G2147 reason to accuse G2723 Him. 8 But He knew G6063 [fn]what G1261 they were thinking G1261, and He said G3004 to the man G435 with the withered G3584 hand G5495, “Get G1453 up G1453 and [fn]come G2476 forward G1519 G3319!” And he stood G450 up G450 and [fn]came G2476 forward. 9 And Jesus G2424 said G3004 to them, “I ask G1905 you, is it lawful G1832 to do G15 good G15 or G2228 to do G2554 harm G2554 on the Sabbath G4521, to save G4982 a life G5590 or G2228 to destroy G622 it?” 10 And after looking G4017 around G4017 at them all G3956, He said G3004 to him, “Stretch G1614 out G1614 your hand G5495!” And he did G4160 so, and his hand G5495 was restored G600. 11 But they themselves G846 were filled G4130 with [fn]rage G454, and were discussing G1255 together G4314 G240 what G5101 G302 they might do G4160 to Jesus G2424.
Jesus Appoints the Twelve
12 Now it happened G1096 that [fn]at this G3778 time G2250 He went G1831 off G1831 to the mountain G3735 to pray G4336, and He was spending G1273 the G1273 whole G1273 night G1273 in prayer G4335 to God G2316.
13 And when G3753 day G2250 came G1096, He called G4377 His disciples G3101 to G4377 Him and chose G1586 twelve G1427 of them, whom G3739 He also G2532 named G3687 as apostles G652: 14 Simon G4613, whom G3739 He also G2532 named G3687 Peter G4074, and Andrew G406 his brother G80; and James G2385 and John G2491; and Philip G5376 and Bartholomew G918; 15 and Matthew G3156 and Thomas G2381; James G2385 the son of Alphaeus G256, and Simon G4613 who was called G2564 the Zealot G2208; 16 Judas G2455 the son of James G2385, and Judas G2455 Iscariot G2469, who G3739 became G1096 a traitor G4273.
17 And Jesus came G2597 down G2597 with them and stood G2476 on a level G3977 place G5117; and there was a large G4183 crowd G3793 of His disciples G3101, and a great G4183 multitude G4128 of people G2992 from all G3956 Judea G2449 and Jerusalem G2419 and the coastal G3882 region G3882 of Tyre G5184 and Sidon G4605, 18 who G3739 had come G2064 to hear G191 Him and to be healed G2390 of their diseases G3554; and those G3588 who were troubled G1776 with unclean G169 spirits G4151 were being cured G2323. 19 And all G3956 the crowd G3793 was trying G2212 to touch G681 Him, for power G1411 was coming G1831 from Him and healing G2390 them all G3956.
The Beatitudes
20 And turning G1869 His gaze G3788 toward G1519 His disciples G3101, He began to say G3004,
“Blessed G3107 are the poor G4434, for yours G5212 is the kingdom G932 of God G2316.
21 Blessed G3107 are those who hunger G3983 now G3568, for you shall be satisfied G5526.
Blessed G3107 are those who cry G2799 now G3568, for you shall laugh G1070.
22 Blessed G3107 are you when G3752 men G444 hate G3404 you, and exclude G873 you, and insult G3679 you, and scorn G1544 your name G3686 as evil G4190, for the sake G6025 of the Son G5207 of Man G444.
23 Be glad G5463 in that day G2250 and leap G4640 for joy, for behold G2400, your reward G3408 is great G4183 in heaven G3772. For their fathers G3962 were doing G4160 the same G846 things G2596 to the prophets G4396.
Jesus Pronounces Woes
24 But woe G3759 to you who are rich G4145, for you are receiving G568 your comfort G3874 in full G568.
25 Woe G3759 to you who [fn]are well-fed G1705 now G3568, for you shall be hungry G3983.
Woe G3759 to you who laugh G1070 now G3568, for you shall mourn G3996 and cry G2799.
26 Woe G3759 to you when G3752 all G3956 men G444 speak G3004 well G2573 of you, for their fathers G3962 were doing G4160 the same G846 things G2596 to the false G5578 prophets G5578.
Love Your Enemies
27 “But I say G3004 to you who hear G191, love G25 your enemies G2190, do G4160 good G2573 to those G3588 who hate G3404 you,
28 bless G2127 those G3588 who curse G2672 you, pray G4336 for those G3588 who disparage G1908 you. 29 Whoever hits G5180 you on the cheek G4600, offer G3930 him the other G243 also G2532; and whoever takes G142 away G142 your garment G2440, do not withhold G2967 your [fn]tunic G5509 from him either G2532. 30 Give G1325 to everyone G3956 who asks G154 of you, and whoever takes G142 away G142 what G3588 is yours G4674, do not demand G523 it back G523. 31 And [fn]treat G4160 others G444 the same G3668 way G3668 you want G2309 [fn]them to treat G4160 you. 32 And if G1487 you love G25 those G3588 who love G25 you, what G4169 credit G5485 is that to you? For even G2532 sinners G268 love G25 those G3588 who love G25 them. 33 And if G1437 you do G15 good G15 to those G3588 who do G15 good G15 to you, what G4169 credit G5485 is that to you? For even G2532 sinners G268 do G4160 the same G846. 34 And if G1437 you lend G1155 to those from whom G3739 you expect G1679 to receive G2983, what G4169 credit G5485 is that to you? Even G2532 sinners G268 lend G1155 to sinners G268 in G2443 order G2443 to G2443 receive G618 back G618 the same G2470 amount. 35 But love G25 your enemies G2190, and do G15 good G15, and lend G1155, [fn]expecting G560 nothing G3367 in G560 return G560; and your reward G3408 will be great G4183, and you will be sons G5207 of the Most G5310 High G5310; for He Himself G846 is kind G5543 to the ungrateful G884 and evil G4190. 36 [fn]Be merciful G3629, just G2531 as your Father G3962 is merciful G3629.
Do Not Judge
37 “And do not judge G2919, and you will not be judged G2919; and do not condemn G2613, and you will not be condemned G2613; [fn]pardon G630, and you will be [fn]pardoned G630.
38 Give G1325, and it will be given G1325 to you. They will [fn]pour G1325 into your lap G2859 a good G2570 measure G3358—pressed G4085 down G4085, shaken G4531 together G4531, running G5240 over G5240. For by your standard G3358 of measure G3354 it will be measured G488 to you in G488 return G488.”
39 And He also G2532 spoke G3004 a parable G3850 to them: “Can G1410 a blind G5185 man G5185 guide G3594 a blind G5185 man G5185? Will they not both G297 fall G1706 into a pit G999? 40 A [fn]student G3101 is not above G5228 his teacher G1320; but everyone G3956, after he has been fully G2675 trained G2675, will [fn]be like G5613 his teacher G1320. 41 And why G5101 do you look G991 at the speck G2595 that is in your brother’s G80 eye G3788, but do not notice G2657 the log G1385 that is in your own G2398 eye G3788? 42 How G4459 can G1410 you say G3004 to your brother G80, ‘Brother G80, let G863 me take G1544 out G1544 the speck G2595 that is in your eye G3788,’ when you yourself G846 do not see G991 the log G1385 that is in your own eye G3788? You hypocrite G5273, first G4413 take G1544 the log G1385 out G1544 of your own eye G3788, and then G5119 you will see G1227 clearly G1227 to take G1544 out G1544 the speck G2595 that is in your brother’s G80 eye G3788. 43 For there is no G3756 good G2570 tree G1186 which produces G4160 bad G4550 fruit G2590, nor G3761, [fn]on the other G3825 hand G3825, a bad G4550 tree G1186 which produces G4160 good G2570 fruit G2590. 44 For each G1538 tree G1186 is known G1097 by its own G2398 fruit G2590. For men do not gather G4816 figs G4810 from thorns G173, nor G3761 do they pick G5166 grapes G4718 from a bramble G942 bush G942. 45 The good G18 man G444 out of the good G18 [fn]treasure G2344 of his heart G2588 brings G4393 forth G4393 what G18 is G18 good G18; and the evil G4190 man out of the evil G4190 treasure brings G4393 forth G4393 what G4190 is G4190 evil G4190. For his mouth G4750 speaks G2980 from the abundance G4051 of his heart G2588.
Build Your House on the Rock
46 “Now why G5101 do you call G2564 Me, ‘Lord G2962, Lord G2962,’ and do not do G4160 what G3739 I say G3004?
47 Everyone G3956 who comes G2064 to Me and hears G191 My words G3056 and does G4160 them, I will show G5263 you whom G5101 he is like G3664: 48 he is like G3664 a man G444 building G3618 a house G3614, who G3739 dug G4626 and went G900 deep G900, and laid G5087 a foundation G2310 on the rock G4073; and when a flood G4132 occurred G1096, the river G4215 burst G4366 against G4366 that house G3614 and could G2480 not shake G4531 it, because G1223 it had been well G2573 built G3618. 49 But the one who heard G191 and did not do G4160 accordingly, is like G3664 a man G444 who built G3618 a house G3614 on the ground G1093 without G5565 any foundation G2310; and the river G4215 burst G4366 against G4366 it and immediately G2117 it collapsed G6081, and the ruin G4485 of that house G3614 was great G3173.”
