The Centurion’s Faith

2 And a centurion’s ^G1543 slave ^G1401, [fn]who ^G3739 was highly ^G1784 regarded ^G1784 by him, was sick ^G2560 and about ^G3195 to ^G3195 die ^G5053.

3 Now when he heard ^G191 about ^G4012 Jesus ^G2424, he sent ^G649 some [fn]Jewish ^G2453 elders ^G4245 asking ^G2065 Him to come ^G2064 and [fn]save ^G1295 the ^G1295 life ^G1295 of his slave ^G1401. 4 And when they came ^G3854 to Jesus ^G2424, they were earnestly ^G4709 pleading ^G3870 with Him, saying ^G3004, “He is worthy ^G514 for You to grant ^G3930 this ^G3778 to him; 5 for he loves ^G25 our nation ^G1484 and it was he who built ^G3618 us our synagogue ^G4864.” 6 Now ^G1161 Jesus ^G2424 was going on ^G4198 His way ^G4198 with them; and when He was not far ^G3112 from the house ^G3614, the centurion ^G1543 sent ^G3992 friends ^G5384, saying ^G3004 to Him, “[fn]Lord ^G2962, do not trouble ^G4660 Yourself further, for I am ^G1510 not good ^G2425 enough ^G2425 for You to come ^G1525 under ^G5259 my roof ^G4721. 7 For this ^G1352 reason ^G1352 I did not even ^G3761 consider ^G515 myself ^G1683 worthy ^G515 to come ^G2064 to You, but just [fn]say ^G3004 the word ^G3056, and my [fn]servant ^G3816 will be healed ^G2390. 8 For I also ^G2532 am ^G1510 a man ^G444 placed under ^G5259 authority ^G1849, with soldiers ^G4757 under ^G5259 me; and I say ^G3004 to this ^G3778 one ^G3778, ‘Go ^G4198!’ and he goes ^G4198, and to another ^G243, ‘Come ^G2064!’ and he comes ^G2064, and to my slave ^G1401, ‘Do ^G4160 this ^G3778!’ and he does ^G4160 it.” 9 Now ^G1161 when Jesus ^G2424 heard ^G191 this ^G3778, He marveled ^G2296 at him. Questions from John the Baptist

19 Summoning ^G4341 [fn]two ^G1417 of his disciples ^G3101, John ^G2491 sent ^G3992 them to the Lord ^G2962, saying ^G3004, “Are You the One who is to come ^G2064, or ^G2228 should we look ^G4328 for ^G4328 someone ^G243 else ^G243?” 20 When the men ^G435 came ^G3854 to Him, they said ^G3004, “John ^G2491 the Baptist ^G910 has sent ^G649 us to You, saying ^G3004, ‘Are You the One who is to come ^G2064, or ^G2228 should we look ^G4328 for ^G4328 someone ^G243 else ^G243?’” 21 At that [fn]very time ^G5610 He cured ^G2323 many ^G4183 people of diseases ^G3554 and afflictions ^G3148 and evil ^G4190 spirits ^G4151, and He granted ^G5483 sight ^G991 to many ^G4183 who were blind ^G5185. 22 And He answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to them, “Go ^G4198 and report ^G518 to John ^G2491 what ^G3739 you have seen ^G3708 and heard ^G191: the BLIND ^G5185 RECEIVE ^G308 SIGHT ^G308, the lame ^G5560 walk ^G4043, the lepers ^G3015 are cleansed ^G2511, and the deaf ^G2974 hear ^G191, the dead ^G3498 are raised ^G1453 up ^G1453, the POOR ^G4434 HAVE THE GOSPEL ^G2097 PREACHED ^G2097 TO THEM. 23 Blessed ^G3107 is he [fn]who ^G3739 does not take ^G4624 offense ^G4624 at Me.”

24 And when the messengers ^G32 of John ^G2491 had left ^G565, He began ^G757 to speak ^G3004 to the crowds ^G3793 about ^G4012 John ^G2491, “What ^G5101 did you go ^G1831 out ^G1831 into the wilderness ^G2048 to behold ^G2300? A reed ^G2563 shaken ^G4531 by the wind ^G417? 25 [fn]But what ^G5101 did you go ^G1831 out ^G1831 to see ^G3708? A man ^G444 dressed ^G294 in soft ^G3120 garments ^G2440? Behold, those ^G3588 who are splendidly ^G1741 clothed ^G2441 and live ^G5225 in luxury ^G5172 are found in royal ^G933 palaces ^G933! 26 But what ^G5101 did you go ^G1831 out ^G1831 to see ^G3708? A prophet ^G4396? Yes ^G3483, I say ^G3004 to you, and even more ^G4053 than a prophet ^G4396. 27 This ^G3778 is the one about ^G4012 whom ^G3739 it is written ^G1125,

‘BEHOLD ^G2400, I SEND ^G649 MY MESSENGER ^G32 [fn]AHEAD ^G4253 OF YOU,

WHO ^G3739 WILL PREPARE ^G2680 YOUR WAY ^G3598 BEFORE ^G1715 YOU.’

28 I say ^G3004 to you, among ^G1722 those born ^G1084 of women ^G1135 there is no ^G3762 one ^G3762 greater ^G3173 than John ^G2491; yet ^G1161 he who is [fn]least ^G3398 in the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316 is greater ^G3173 than he.” 29 And when all ^G3956 the people ^G2992 and the tax ^G5057 collectors ^G5057 heard ^G191 this, they [fn]acknowledged ^G1344 God’s ^G2316 justice ^G1344, having been baptized ^G907 with the baptism ^G908 of John ^G2491. 30 But the Pharisees ^G5330 and the scholars ^G3544 of ^G3544 the ^G3544 Law ^G3544 rejected ^G114 God’s ^G2316 purpose ^G1012 for themselves ^G1438, not having been baptized ^G907 by [fn]John.

31 “To what ^G5101 then ^G3767 shall I compare ^G3666 the men ^G444 of this ^G3778 generation ^G1074, and what ^G5101 are they like ^G3664? 32 They are like ^G3664 children ^G3813, sitting ^G2521 in the marketplace ^G58 and calling ^G4377 to ^G4377 one ^G240 another ^G240, who say ^G3004, ‘We played ^G832 the ^G832 flute ^G832 for you, and you did not dance ^G3738; we sang ^G2354 a ^G2354 dirge ^G2354, and you did not cry ^G2799.’ 33 For John ^G2491 the Baptist ^G910 has come ^G2064 eating ^G2068 no ^G3361 bread ^G740 and drinking ^G4095 no ^G3383 wine ^G3631, and you say ^G3004, ‘He has ^G2192 a demon ^G1140!’ 34 The Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 has come ^G2064 eating ^G2068 and drinking ^G4095, and you say ^G3004, ‘Behold ^G2400, a gluttonous ^G5314 man ^G444 and a [fn]drunkard ^G3630, a friend ^G5384 of tax ^G5057 collectors ^G5057 and [fn]sinners ^G268!’ 35 Yet ^G2532 wisdom ^G4678 is vindicated ^G1344 [fn]by all ^G3956 her children ^G5043.”

36 Now ^G1161 one ^G5100 of the Pharisees ^G5330 was asking ^G2065 Him to eat ^G2068 with him, and He entered ^G1525 the Pharisee’s ^G5330 house ^G3624 and reclined ^G2625 at the table. 37 And behold ^G2400, there was a woman ^G1135 in the city ^G4172 who ^G3748 was a [fn]sinner ^G268. And when she learned ^G1921 that He was reclining ^G2621 at the table in the Pharisee’s ^G5330 house ^G3614, she brought ^G2865 an alabaster ^G211 jar ^G211 of perfume ^G3464. 38 And standing ^G2476 behind ^G3694 Him at His feet ^G4228, crying ^G2799, she began ^G757 to wet ^G1026 His feet ^G4228 with her tears ^G1144. And she kept wiping ^G1591 them with the hair ^G2359 of her head ^G2776, and kissing ^G2705 His feet ^G4228 and anointing ^G218 them with the perfume ^G3464. 39 Now ^G1161 when the Pharisee ^G5330, who had invited ^G2564 Him, saw ^G3708 this, he said ^G3004 to himself ^G1438, saying ^G3004, “If ^G1487 this ^G3778 man ^G3778 were a prophet ^G4396 He would know ^G1097 who ^G5101 and what ^G4217 sort ^G4217 of ^G4217 person ^G4217 this ^G3588 woman ^G1135 is who ^G3748 is touching ^G681 Him, that she is a sinner ^G268.”

Parable of Two Debtors

40 And Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to him, “Simon ^G4613, I have ^G2192 something ^G5100 to say ^G3004 to you.” And he [fn]replied ^G5346, “Say ^G3004 it, Teacher ^G1320.” 41 “A moneylender ^G1157 had ^G1510 two ^G1417 debtors ^G5533: one ^G1520 owed ^G3784 five ^G4001 hundred ^G4001 [fn]denarii ^G1220, and the other ^G2087 fifty ^G4004. 42 When they were unable ^G3361 G2192 to repay ^G591, he graciously ^G5483 forgave ^G5483 them both ^G297. So ^G3767 which ^G5101 of them will love ^G25 him more ^G4183?” 43 Simon ^G4613 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004, “I suppose ^G5274 the one whom ^G3739 he graciously ^G5483 forgave ^G5483 more ^G4183.” And He said ^G3004 to him, “You have judged ^G2919 correctly ^G3723.” 44 And turning ^G4762 toward ^G4314 the woman ^G1135, He said ^G5346 to Simon ^G4613, “Do you see ^G991 this ^G3778 woman ^G1135? I entered ^G1525 your house ^G3614; you gave ^G1325 Me no ^G3756 water ^G5204 for My feet ^G4228, but she has wet ^G1026 My feet ^G4228 with her tears ^G1144 and wiped ^G1591 them with her hair ^G2359. 45 You gave ^G1325 Me no ^G3756 kiss ^G5370; but she, since ^G575 the time I came ^G1525 in ^G1525, has not ceased ^G1257 to kiss ^G2705 My feet ^G4228. 46 You did not anoint ^G218 My head ^G2776 with oil ^G1637, but she anointed ^G218 My feet ^G4228 with perfume ^G3464. 47 For this ^G3739 reason ^G5484 I say ^G3004 to you, her sins ^G266, which are many ^G4183, have been forgiven ^G863, for she loved ^G25 much ^G4183. But he who ^G3739 is forgiven ^G863 little ^G3641, loves ^G25 little ^G3641.” 48 Then ^G2532 He said ^G3004 to her, “Your sins ^G266 have been forgiven ^G863.” 49 And those ^G3588 who were reclining ^G4873 at the table with Him began ^G757 to say ^G3004 [fn]to themselves ^G1438, “Who ^G5101 is this ^G3778 man who ^G3739 even ^G2532 forgives ^G863 sins ^G266?” 50 And He said ^G3004 to the woman ^G1135, “Your faith ^G4102 has saved ^G4982 you; go ^G4198 in peace ^G1515.”
