Parable of the Vine-Growers

1 And He began ^G757 to speak ^G2980 to them in parables ^G3850: “A man ^G444 PLANTED ^G5452 A VINEYARD ^G290 AND PUT ^G4060 A [fn]WALL ^G5418 AROUND ^G4060 IT, AND DUG ^G3736 A VAT ^G5276 UNDER ^G5276 THE ^G5276 WINE ^G5276 PRESS ^G5276 AND BUILT ^G3618 A TOWER ^G4444, and rented ^G1554 it out to [fn]vine-growers ^G1092 and went ^G589 on ^G589 a ^G589 journey ^G589.

2 And at the harvest time ^G2540 he sent ^G649 a slave ^G1401 to the vine-growers ^G1092, in ^G2443 order ^G2443 to ^G2443 receive ^G2983 some of the fruit ^G2590 of the vineyard ^G290 from the vine-growers ^G1092. 3 And they took ^G2983 him, and beat ^G1194 him and sent ^G649 him away ^G649 empty-handed ^G2756. 4 And again ^G3825 he sent ^G649 them another ^G243 slave ^G1401, and they wounded ^G2775 him in ^G2775 the ^G2775 head ^G2775, and treated ^G818 him shamefully ^G818. 5 And he sent ^G649 another ^G243, and that ^G2548 one ^G2548 they killed ^G615; and so with many ^G4183 others ^G243, beating ^G1194 some ^G3739 G3303 and killing ^G615 others ^G3739 G1161. 6 He had ^G2192 one ^G1520 more ^G2089, a beloved ^G27 son ^G5207; he sent ^G649 him last ^G2078 of all to them, saying ^G3004, ‘They will respect ^G1788 my son ^G5207.’ 7 But those ^G1565 vine-growers ^G1092 said ^G3004 to one ^G1438 another ^G1438, ‘This ^G3778 is the heir ^G2818; come ^G1205, let us kill ^G615 him, and the inheritance ^G2817 will be ours ^G1473!’ 8 And they took ^G2983 him, and killed ^G615 him and threw ^G1544 him out ^G1544 of the vineyard ^G290. 9 What ^G5101 will the [fn]owner ^G2962 of the vineyard ^G290 do ^G4160? He will come ^G2064 and destroy ^G622 the vine-growers ^G1092, and will give ^G1325 the vineyard ^G290 to others ^G243. 10 Have you not even ^G3761 read ^G314 this ^G3778 Scripture ^G1124:

‘THE STONE ^G3037 WHICH ^G3739 THE BUILDERS ^G3618 REJECTED ^G593,

THIS ^G3778 HAS BECOME ^G1096 THE CHIEF ^G2776 CORNER ^G1137 stone;

11 THIS ^G3778 CAME ^G1096 ABOUT FROM THE [fn]LORD ^G2962,

AND IT IS MARVELOUS ^G2298 IN OUR EYES ^G3788’?”

12 And they were seeking ^G2212 to seize ^G2902 Him, and yet they feared ^G5399 the crowd ^G3793, for they understood ^G1097 that He spoke ^G3004 the parable ^G3850 against ^G4314 them. And so they left ^G863 Him and went ^G565 away ^G565.

Taxes to Caesar

13 Then ^G2532 they *sent ^G649 some ^G5100 of the Pharisees ^G5330 and Herodians ^G2265 to Him in ^G2443 order ^G2443 to ^G2443 trap ^G64 Him in a statement ^G3056.

14 And they *came ^G2064 and *said ^G3004 to Him, “Teacher ^G1320, we know ^G6063 that You are truthful ^G227 and [fn]defer ^G3199 to no ^G3762 one ^G3762; for You are not partial ^G991 G4383 to any ^G444, but teach ^G1321 the way ^G3598 of God ^G2316 in truth ^G225. Is it [fn]lawful ^G1832 to pay ^G1325 a tax ^G2778 to Caesar ^G2541, or ^G2228 not? 15 Shall we pay ^G1325 or ^G2228 shall we not pay ^G1325?” But He, knowing ^G6063 their hypocrisy ^G5272, said ^G3004 to them, “Why ^G5101 are you testing ^G3985 Me? Bring ^G5342 Me a [fn]denarius ^G1220 to look ^G3708 at.” 16 And they brought ^G5342 one. And He *said ^G3004 to them, “Whose ^G5101 likeness ^G1504 and inscription ^G1923 is this ^G3778?” And they said ^G3004 to Him, “Caesar’s ^G2541.” 17 And Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to them, “Render ^G591 to Caesar ^G2541 the things that are Caesar’s ^G2541, and to God ^G2316 the things that are God’s ^G2316.” And they [fn]were amazed ^G6028 at Him.

The Sadducees and the Resurrection

18 Then ^G2532 some Sadducees ^G4523 (who ^G3748 say ^G3004 that there is no ^G3361 resurrection ^G386) *came ^G2064 to Jesus, and began questioning ^G1905 Him, saying ^G3004,

19 “Teacher ^G1320, Moses ^G3475 wrote ^G1125 for us that IF ^G1437 A MAN’S ^G5100 BROTHER ^G80 DIES ^G599 and leaves ^G2641 behind ^G2641 a wife ^G1135 AND LEAVES ^G863 NO ^G3361 CHILD ^G5043, HIS BROTHER ^G80 SHOULD [fn]MARRY ^G2983 THE WIFE ^G1135 AND RAISE ^G1817 UP A SEED ^G4690 FOR HIS BROTHER ^G80. 20 There were seven ^G2033 brothers ^G80; and the first ^G4413 [fn]married ^G2983 a wife ^G1135, and died ^G599 leaving ^G863 no ^G3756 [fn]seed ^G4690. 21 And the second ^G1208 one ^G1208 [fn]married ^G2983 her, and died ^G599 leaving ^G2641 behind ^G2641 no ^G3361 seed ^G4690; and the third ^G5154 likewise ^G5615; 22 and so [fn]all ^G3588 seven ^G2033 left ^G863 no ^G3756 seed ^G4690. Last ^G2078 of all ^G3956 the woman ^G1135 died ^G599 also ^G2532. 23 In the resurrection ^G386, [fn]when ^G3752 they rise ^G450 again ^G450, whose ^G846 G5101 wife ^G1135 will she be? For [fn]all ^G3588 seven ^G2033 [fn]had ^G2192 married her.” 24 Jesus ^G2424 said ^G5346 to them, “Is this ^G3778 not the reason ^G1223 you are mistaken ^G4105, that you do not [fn]understand ^G6063 the Scriptures ^G1124 nor ^G3366 the power ^G1411 of God ^G2316? 25 For when ^G3752 they rise ^G450 from the dead ^G3498, they neither ^G3777 marry ^G1060 nor ^G3777 are given ^G1061 in ^G1061 marriage ^G1061, but are like ^G5613 angels ^G32 in ^G5613 heaven ^G3772. 26 But [fn]regarding ^G4012 the ^G3754 fact ^G3754 that ^G3754 the dead ^G3498 are raised ^G1453, have you not read ^G314 in the book ^G976 of Moses ^G3475, in the passage about ^G1909 the burning bush ^G942, how ^G4459 God ^G2316 spoke ^G3004 to him, saying ^G3004, ‘I AM THE GOD ^G2316 OF ABRAHAM ^G11, AND THE GOD ^G2316 OF ISAAC ^G2464, AND THE GOD ^G2316 OF JACOB ^G2384’? 27 He is not the God ^G2316 of the dead ^G3498, but of the living ^G2198; you are greatly ^G4183 mistaken ^G4105.”

The Foremost Commandment

28 And when one ^G1520 of the scribes ^G1122 came ^G4334 and heard ^G191 them arguing ^G4802, he recognized ^G3708 that He had answered ^G611 them well ^G2573 and asked ^G1905 Him, “What ^G4169 commandment ^G1785 is the [fn]foremost ^G4413 of all ^G3956?”

29 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611, “The foremost ^G4413 is, ‘HEAR ^G191, O ISRAEL ^G2474! THE [fn]LORD ^G2962 OUR GOD ^G2316 IS ONE ^G1520 [fn]LORD ^G2962; 30 AND YOU SHALL LOVE ^G25 THE [fn]LORD ^G2962 YOUR GOD ^G2316 WITH ALL ^G3650 YOUR HEART ^G2588, AND WITH ALL ^G3650 YOUR SOUL ^G5590, AND WITH ALL ^G3650 YOUR MIND ^G1271, AND WITH ALL ^G3650 YOUR STRENGTH ^G2479.’ 31 The second ^G1208 is this ^G3778, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE ^G25 YOUR NEIGHBOR ^G4139 AS YOURSELF ^G4572.’ There is no ^G3756 other ^G243 commandment ^G1785 greater ^G3173 than these ^G3778.” 32 And the scribe ^G1122 said ^G3004 to Him, “Right ^G2573, Teacher ^G1320; You have truly ^G1909 G225 stated ^G3004 that HE IS ONE ^G1520, AND THERE IS NO ^G3756 ONE ^G243 ELSE ^G243 BESIDES ^G4133 HIM; 33 AND TO LOVE ^G25 HIM WITH ALL ^G3650 THE HEART ^G2588 AND WITH ALL ^G3650 THE UNDERSTANDING ^G4907 AND WITH ALL ^G3650 THE STRENGTH ^G2479, AND TO LOVE ^G25 ONE’S NEIGHBOR ^G4139 AS HIMSELF ^G1438, is much ^G4053 more ^G4053 than all ^G3956 burnt ^G3646 offerings ^G3646 and sacrifices ^G2378.” 34 And when Jesus ^G2424 saw ^G3708 that he had answered ^G611 thoughtfully ^G3562, He said ^G3004 to him, “You are not far ^G3112 from the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316.” After that, no ^G3762 one ^G3762 would dare ^G5111 to ask ^G1905 Him any ^G3765 more ^G3765 questions ^G1905.

35 And Jesus ^G2424 began to say ^G3004, as He taught ^G1321 in the temple ^G2413, “How ^G4459 is it that the scribes ^G1122 say ^G3004 that the [fn]Christ ^G5547 is the son ^G5207 of David ^G1138? 36 David ^G1138 himself ^G846 said ^G3004 [fn]in the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151,

‘THE [fn]LORD ^G2962 SAID ^G3004 TO MY LORD ^G2962,

“SIT ^G2521 AT MY RIGHT ^G1188 HAND ^G1188,

UNTIL ^G2193 I PUT ^G5087 YOUR ENEMIES ^G2190 BENEATH ^G5270 YOUR FEET ^G4228.”’

37 David ^G1138 himself ^G846 calls ^G3004 Him ‘Lord ^G2962’; so ^G2532 in what ^G4159 sense ^G4159 is He his son ^G5207?” And the large ^G4183 crowd ^G3793 [fn]enjoyed ^G2234 listening ^G191 to Him.

38 And in His teaching ^G1322 He was saying ^G3004: “Beware ^G991 of the scribes ^G1122 who want ^G2309 to walk ^G4043 around ^G4043 in long ^G4749 robes ^G4749, and want respectful greetings ^G783 in the marketplaces ^G58, 39 and best ^G4410 seats ^G4410 in the synagogues ^G4864 and places ^G4411 of ^G4411 honor ^G4411 at banquets ^G1173, 40 who devour ^G2719 widows’ ^G5503 houses ^G3614, and for appearance’s ^G4392 sake ^G4392 offer ^G4336 long ^G3117 prayers ^G4336; these ^G3778 will receive ^G2983 greater ^G4053 condemnation ^G2917.”

The Widow’s Offering

41 And He sat ^G2523 down ^G2523 opposite ^G2713 the treasury ^G1049, and began observing ^G2334 how ^G4459 the crowd ^G4145 was putting ^G906 [fn]money ^G5475 into the treasury ^G1049; and many ^G4183 rich ^G4145 people ^G4145 were putting ^G906 in large ^G4183 sums ^G4183.

42 And a poor ^G4434 widow ^G5503 came ^G2064 and put ^G906 in two ^G1417 [fn]lepta ^G3016, which ^G3739 amount ^G1510 to a [fn]quadrans ^G2835. 43 And calling ^G4341 His disciples ^G3101 to Him, He said ^G3004 to them, “Truly ^G281 I say ^G3004 to you, this ^G3778 poor ^G4434 widow ^G5503 put ^G906 in more ^G4183 than all ^G3956 those putting ^G906 money into the treasury ^G1049; 44 for they all ^G3956 put ^G906 in out of their [fn]surplus ^G4052, but she, out of her poverty ^G5304, put ^G906 in all ^G3956 G3745 she owned ^G2192, [fn]all ^G3650 she had to live ^G979 on.”
