Released from the Law

1 Or ^G2228 do you not know ^G50, brothers ^G80—for I am speaking ^G2980 to those who know ^G1097 the law ^G3551—that the law ^G3551 is ^G2961 master ^G2961 over ^G2961 a person ^G444 as long ^G5550 as he lives ^G2198?

2 For the married ^G5220 woman ^G1135 has been bound ^G1210 by law ^G3551 to her [fn]husband ^G435 while he is ^G2198 living ^G2198, but if ^G1437 her husband ^G435 dies ^G599, she is released ^G2673 from the law ^G3551 [fn]concerning the husband ^G435. 3 So ^G686 then ^G686, if ^G1437 while her husband ^G435 is ^G2198 living ^G2198 she is joined ^G1096 to another ^G2087 man ^G435, she shall be called ^G5537 an adulteress ^G3428. But if ^G1437 her husband ^G435 dies ^G599, she is free ^G1658 from the law ^G3551, so that she is not an adulteress ^G3428 though she is joined ^G1096 to another ^G2087 man ^G435.

4 So ^G5620, my brothers ^G80, you also ^G2532 were made ^G2289 to ^G2289 die ^G2289 to the Law ^G3551 through ^G1223 the body ^G4983 of Christ ^G5547, so ^G1519 that you might be joined ^G1096 to another ^G2087, to Him who was raised ^G1453 from the dead ^G3498, in ^G2443 order ^G2443 that ^G2443 we might bear ^G2592 fruit ^G2592 for God ^G2316. 5 For while ^G3753 we were in the flesh ^G4561, the sinful ^G266 passions ^G3804, which were aroused by the Law ^G3551, were at work ^G1754 in our members ^G3196 to bear ^G2592 fruit ^G2592 for death ^G2288. 6 But now ^G3570 we have been released ^G2673 from the Law ^G3551, having died ^G599 to that by which ^G3739 we were constrained ^G2722, so ^G5620 that we serve ^G1398 in newness ^G2538 of [fn]the Spirit ^G4151 and not in oldness ^G3821 of the letter ^G1121.

7 What ^G5101 shall we say ^G3004 then ^G3767? Is the Law ^G3551 sin ^G266? May it never ^G3361 be! Rather ^G235, I would not have come to know ^G1097 sin ^G266 except ^G1508 [fn]through ^G1223 the Law ^G3551. For I would not have known ^G6063 about ^G6063 [fn]coveting ^G1939 if ^G1487 the Law ^G3551 had not said ^G3004, “YOU SHALL NOT [fn]COVET ^G1937.” 8 But sin ^G266, taking ^G2983 opportunity ^G874 through ^G1223 the commandment ^G1785, worked ^G2716 out ^G2716 in me [fn]coveting ^G1939 of every ^G3956 kind ^G3956. For apart ^G5565 [fn]from the Law ^G3551 sin ^G266 is dead ^G3498. 9 Now I was ^G2198 once ^G4218 alive ^G2198 apart ^G5565 [fn]from the Law ^G3551, but when the commandment ^G1785 came ^G2064, sin ^G266 revived ^G326 and I died ^G599; 10 and this ^G3778 commandment ^G1785, which was [fn]to lead ^G1519 to life ^G2222, was found ^G2147 [fn]to lead ^G1519 to death ^G2288 for me. 11 For sin ^G266, taking ^G2983 an opportunity ^G874 through ^G1223 the commandment ^G1785, deceived ^G1818 me and through ^G1223 it killed ^G615 me. 12 So ^G5620, the Law ^G3551 is holy ^G40, and the commandment ^G1785 is holy ^G40 and righteous ^G1342 and good ^G18.

The Conflict of Two Natures

13 Therefore ^G3767 did that which is good ^G18 become ^G1096 a cause of death ^G2288 for me? May it never ^G3361 be! Rather ^G235 it was sin ^G266, in ^G2443 order ^G2443 that ^G2443 it might be shown ^G5316 to be sin ^G266 by working ^G2716 out ^G2716 my death ^G2288 through ^G1223 that which is good ^G18, so ^G2443 that through ^G1223 the commandment ^G1785 sin ^G266 would [fn]become ^G1096 utterly ^G5236 sinful ^G266.

14 For we know ^G6063 that the Law ^G3551 is spiritual ^G4152, but I am ^G1510 fleshly ^G4560, having been sold ^G4097 [fn]into bondage under sin ^G266.

15 For what ^G3739 I am working ^G2716 out ^G2716, I do not understand ^G1097; for I am not practicing ^G4238 what ^G3739 I would like ^G2309 to do, but I am doing ^G4160 the very ^G3778 thing ^G3739 I hate ^G3404. 16 But if ^G1487 I do ^G4160 the very ^G3778 thing ^G3778 I do not want ^G2309, I agree ^G4852 with the Law ^G3551, that it is good ^G2570. 17 So ^G1161 now ^G3570, no ^G3765 longer ^G3765 am I the one working ^G2716 it out ^G2716, but sin ^G266 which dwells ^G1774 in me. 18 For I know ^G6063 that nothing ^G3756 good ^G18 dwells ^G3611 in me, that is, in my flesh ^G4561; for the willing ^G2309 is present ^G3873 in me, but the working ^G2716 out ^G2716 of the good ^G2570 is not. 19 For the good ^G18 that I want ^G2309, I do not do ^G4160, but I practice ^G4238 the very ^G3778 evil ^G2556 that I do not want ^G2309. 20 But if ^G1487 I am doing ^G4160 the very ^G3778 thing ^G3778 I do not want ^G2309, I am no ^G3765 longer ^G3765 the one working ^G2716 it out ^G2716, but sin ^G266 which dwells ^G3611 in me.

21 I find ^G2147 then ^G686 the [fn]principle ^G3551 that in ^G686 me evil ^G2556 is present ^G3873—in me who wants ^G2309 to do ^G4160 good ^G2570. 22 For I joyfully ^G4913 concur ^G4913 with the law ^G3551 of God ^G2316 [fn]in the inner ^G2080 man ^G444, 23 but I see ^G991 a different ^G2087 law ^G3551 in my members ^G3196, waging ^G497 war ^G497 against ^G497 the law ^G3551 of my mind ^G3563 and making ^G163 me a ^G163 captive ^G163 [fn]to the law ^G3551 of sin ^G266 which is in my members ^G3196. 24 Wretched ^G5005 man ^G444 that I am! Who ^G5101 will deliver ^G4506 me from [fn]the body ^G4983 of this ^G3778 death ^G2288? 25 [fn]Thanks ^G5485 be to God ^G2316 through ^G1223 Jesus ^G2424 Christ ^G5547 our Lord ^G2962! So ^G686 then ^G686, on the one ^G3303 hand ^G3303 I myself ^G846 with my mind ^G3563 am serving ^G1398 the law ^G3551 of God ^G2316, but on the other ^G1161, with my flesh ^G4561 the law ^G3551 of sin ^G266.
