The People’s Hard Hearts
1 Now it happened that in the fourth H702 year H8141 of King H4428 Darius H1867, the word H1697 of Yahweh H3068 came H1961 to Zechariah H2148 on the fourth H702 day of the ninth H8671 month H2320, which is Chislev H3691.
2 And the town of Bethel H1008 sent H7971 Sharezer H8272 and Regemmelech H7278 and [fn]their men H376 to [fn]entreat H2470 the favor H6440 of Yahweh H3068, 3 speaking H559 to the priests H3548, who H834 belong to the house H1004 of Yahweh H3068 of hosts H6635, and to the prophets H5030, saying H559, “Shall I weep H1058 in the fifth H2549 month H2320 [fn]and abstain H5144, as I have done H6213 these H2088 many H4100 years H8141?” 4 Then the word H1697 of Yahweh H3068 of hosts H6635 came H1961 to me, saying H559, 5 “Speak H559 to all H3605 the people H5971 of the land H776 and to the priests H3548, saying H559, ‘When H3588 you fasted H6684 and mourned H5594 in the fifth H2549 and seventh H7637 months [fn]these H2088 seventy H7657 years H8141, was it actually H6684 for Me that you fasted H6684? 6 And when H3588 you eat H398 and when you drink H8354, [fn]are you not eating H398 for yourselves and are you not drinking H8354 for yourselves? 7 Are not these the words H1697 which H834 Yahweh H3068 called H7121 out H7121 by the hand H3027 of the former H7223 prophets H5030, when Jerusalem H3389 was inhabited H3427 and at ease H7961 along with its cities H5892 around H5439 it, and the [fn]Negev H5045 and the [fn]Shephelah H8219 were inhabited H3427?’”
8 Then the word H1697 of Yahweh H3068 came H1961 to Zechariah H2148 saying H559, 9 “Thus H3541 has Yahweh H3068 of hosts H6635 said H559, ‘Judge H8199 with true H571 justice H4941 and show H6213 lovingkindness H2617 and compassion H7356 each H376 to his brother H251; 10 and do not oppress H6231 the widow H490 or the [fn]orphan H3490, the sojourner H1616 or the afflicted H6041; and do not devise H2803 evil H7451 in your hearts H3824 against one H376 another H312.’ 11 But they refused H3985 to give H7181 heed H7181 and [fn]turned H5414 a stubborn H5637 shoulder H3802 and [fn]dulled H3513 their ears H241 from hearing H8085. 12 And they made H7760 their hearts H3820 [fn]diamond-hard H8068 [fn]so H4480 that H4480 they could not H4480 hear H8085 the law H8451 and the words H1697 which H834 Yahweh H3068 of hosts H6635 had sent H7971 by His Spirit H7307 by the hand H3027 of the former H7223 prophets H5030; therefore great H1419 wrath H7110 came H1961 from Yahweh H3068 of hosts H6635. 13 And it happened that just H834 as He called H7121 and they would not listen H8085, so H3651 they called H7121 and I would not listen H8085,” says H559 Yahweh H3068 of hosts H6635; 14 “but I [fn]scattered H5590 them with H5590 a H5590 storm H5590 wind H5590 among H5921 all H3605 the nations H1471 whom H834 they have not known H3045. Thus the land H776 is H8074 desolated H8074 behind H310 them [fn]so H4480 that H4480 no H4480 one was passing H5674 through and returning H7725, for they made H7760 the pleasant H2532 land H776 desolate H8047.”
