The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost

1 And when ^G1722 the day ^G2250 of Pentecost ^G4005 [fn]had fully ^G4845 come ^G4845, they were all ^G3956 together ^G3674 in one ^G846 place.

2 And suddenly ^G869 there came ^G1096 from heaven ^G3772 a noise ^G2279 like ^G5618 a violent ^G972 rushing ^G5342 wind ^G4157, and it filled ^G4137 the whole ^G3650 house ^G3624 where ^G3757 they were sitting ^G2521. 3 And there appeared ^G3708 to them tongues ^G1100 like fire ^G4442 [fn]distributing ^G1266 themselves, and [fn]they [fn]rested ^G2523 on each ^G1538 one ^G1520 of them. 4 And they were all ^G3956 filled ^G4130 with the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151 and began ^G757 to speak ^G2980 with other ^G2087 [fn]tongues ^G1100, as the Spirit ^G4151 was giving ^G1325 them [fn]utterance ^G669.

5 Now ^G1161 there were Jews ^G2453 living ^G2730 in Jerusalem ^G2419, devout ^G2126 men ^G435 from every ^G3956 nation ^G1484 under ^G5259 heaven ^G3772. 6 And when this ^G3778 sound ^G5456 occurred ^G1096, the multitude ^G4128 came ^G4905 together ^G4905, and were bewildered ^G4797 because ^G3754 each ^G1538 one ^G1520 of them was hearing ^G191 them speak ^G2980 in his own ^G2398 [fn]language ^G1258. 7 So they were astounded ^G1839 and marveling ^G2296, saying ^G3004, “Behold ^G2400, are not all ^G3956 these ^G3778 who are speaking ^G2980 Galileans ^G1057? 8 And how ^G4459 is it that we each ^G1538 hear ^G191 them in our own ^G2398 [fn]language ^G1258 in which ^G3739 we were born ^G1080? 9 Parthians ^G3934 and Medes ^G3370 and Elamites ^G1639, and residents ^G2730 of Mesopotamia ^G3318, Judea ^G2449 and Cappadocia ^G2587, Pontus ^G4195 and [fn]Asia ^G773, 10 Phrygia ^G5435 and Pamphylia ^G3828, Egypt ^G125 and the district ^G3313 of Libya ^G3033 around ^G2596 Cyrene ^G2957, and [fn]visitors ^G1927 from Rome ^G4514, both ^G5037 Jews ^G2453 and [fn]proselytes ^G4339, 11 Cretans ^G2912 and Arabs ^G690—we hear ^G191 them in our own tongues ^G1100 speaking ^G2980 of the mighty ^G3167 deeds ^G3167 of God ^G2316.” 12 And they all ^G3956 continued in astonishment ^G1839 and great ^G1280 perplexity ^G1280, saying ^G3004 to one ^G243 another ^G243, “What ^G5101 does this ^G3778 mean ^G2309 G1510?” 13 But others ^G2087, mocking ^G6017, were saying ^G3004, “They are full ^G3325 of new ^G1098 wine ^G1098.”

Peter’s Sermon at Pentecost

14 But Peter ^G4074, [fn]taking ^G2476 his stand ^G2476 with the eleven ^G1733, raised ^G1869 his voice ^G5456 and declared ^G669 to them: “Men ^G435 of Judea ^G2449 and all ^G3956 you who live ^G2730 in Jerusalem ^G2419, let this ^G3778 be known ^G1110 to you and give ^G1801 heed ^G1801 to ^G1801 my words ^G4487.

15 For these ^G3778 men ^G3778 are ^G3184 not drunk ^G3184, as you suppose ^G5274, for it is the [fn]third ^G5154 hour ^G5610 of the day ^G2250; 16 but this ^G3778 is what was spoken ^G3004 through ^G1223 the prophet ^G4396 Joel ^G2493:

17 ‘AND IT SHALL BE IN THE LAST ^G2078 DAYS ^G2250,’ God ^G2316 says ^G3004,

‘THAT I WILL POUR ^G1632 OUT ^G1632 MY SPIRIT ^G4151 ON ALL ^G3956 [fn]MANKIND ^G4561;

AND YOUR SONS ^G5207 AND YOUR DAUGHTERS ^G2364 SHALL PROPHESY ^G4395,

AND YOUR YOUNG ^G3495 MEN ^G3495 SHALL SEE ^G3708 VISIONS ^G3706,

AND YOUR OLD ^G4245 MEN ^G4245 SHALL DREAM ^G1797 DREAMS ^G1798;

18 EVEN ^G2532 ON MY MALE SLAVES ^G1401 AND FEMALE SLAVES ^G1401,

I WILL IN THOSE ^G1565 DAYS ^G2250 POUR ^G1632 OUT ^G1632 MY SPIRIT ^G4151

And they shall prophesy ^G4395.

19 ‘AND I WILL PUT ^G1325 WONDERS ^G5059 IN THE SKY ^G3772 ABOVE ^G507

AND SIGNS ^G4592 ON THE EARTH ^G1093 BELOW ^G2736,

BLOOD ^G129, AND FIRE ^G4442, AND VAPOR ^G822 OF SMOKE ^G2586.

20 ‘THE SUN ^G2246 WILL BE TURNED ^G3344 INTO DARKNESS ^G4655

AND THE MOON ^G4582 INTO BLOOD ^G129,

BEFORE ^G4250 THE GREAT ^G3173 AND AWESOME ^G2016 DAY ^G2250 OF THE [fn]LORD ^G2962 COMES ^G2064.

21 ‘AND IT WILL BE THAT EVERYONE ^G3956 WHO ^G3739 CALLS ^G1941 ON ^G1941 THE NAME ^G3686 OF THE [fn]LORD ^G2962 WILL BE SAVED ^G4982.’

22 “Men ^G435 of Israel ^G2475, listen ^G191 to these ^G3778 words ^G3056: Jesus ^G2424 the Nazarene ^G3480, a man ^G435 [fn]attested ^G584 to you by God ^G2316 with [fn]miracles ^G1411 and wonders ^G5059 and [fn]signs ^G4592 which ^G3739 God ^G2316 did ^G4160 through ^G1223 Him in your midst ^G3319, just ^G2531 as you yourselves ^G846 know ^G6063— 23 this ^G3778 Man, delivered ^G1560 over by the predetermined ^G3724 plan ^G1012 and foreknowledge ^G4268 of God ^G2316, you nailed ^G4362 to ^G4362 a ^G4362 cross ^G4362 by the hands ^G5495 of lawless ^G459 men ^G459 and put ^G337 Him to ^G337 death ^G337. 24 [fn]But God ^G2316 raised ^G450 Him up ^G450 again ^G450, putting ^G3089 an ^G3089 end ^G3089 to the [fn]agony ^G5604 of death ^G2288, since ^G2530 it was impossible ^G3756 G1415 for Him to be held ^G2902 [fn]in its power ^G5259. 25 For David ^G1138 says ^G3004 of Him,

‘I SAW ^G4308 THE [fn]LORD ^G2962 CONTINUALLY ^G1223 G3956 BEFORE ^G1799 ME ^G3450;

BECAUSE HE IS AT MY RIGHT ^G1188 HAND ^G1188, SO ^G2443 THAT I WILL NOT BE SHAKEN ^G4531.

26 ‘THEREFORE ^G1223 G3778 MY HEART ^G2588 WAS ^G2588 GLAD ^G2165 AND MY TONGUE ^G1100 EXULTED ^G21;

MOREOVER ^G2089 G1161 MY FLESH ^G4561 ALSO ^G2532 WILL LIVE ^G2681 IN HOPE ^G1680;

27 BECAUSE ^G3754 YOU WILL NOT FORSAKE ^G1459 MY SOUL ^G5590 TO HADES ^G86,

NOR ^G3761 GIVE ^G1325 YOUR [fn]HOLY ^G3741 ONE ^G3741 OVER ^G1325 TO SEE ^G1492 CORRUPTION ^G1312.

28 ‘YOU HAVE MADE ^G1107 KNOWN ^G1107 TO ME THE WAYS ^G3598 OF LIFE ^G2222;

YOU WILL MAKE ^G4137 ME FULL ^G4137 OF GLADNESS ^G2167 WITH YOUR PRESENCE ^G4383.’

29 “Men ^G435, brothers ^G80, I may ^G1832 confidently ^G3954 say ^G3004 to you regarding ^G4012 the patriarch ^G3966 David ^G1138 that he both ^G2532 died ^G5053 and was buried ^G2290, and his tomb ^G3418 is [fn]with us to this ^G3778 day ^G2250. 30 And so ^G3767, because he was a prophet ^G4396 and knew ^G6063 that GOD ^G2316 HAD SWORN ^G3660 TO HIM WITH AN OATH ^G3727 TO SET ^G2523 one OF THE FRUIT ^G2590 [fn]OF HIS BODY ^G3751 ON HIS THRONE ^G2362, 31 he looked ^G4275 ahead ^G4275 and spoke ^G2980 of the resurrection ^G386 of the [fn]Christ ^G5547, that HE WAS NEITHER ^G3777 FORSAKEN ^G1459 TO HADES ^G86, NOR ^G3777 DID His flesh ^G4561 SEE ^G3708 CORRUPTION ^G1312. 32 This ^G3778 Jesus ^G2424 God ^G2316 raised ^G450 up ^G450 again ^G450, to which ^G3739 we are all ^G3956 witnesses ^G3144. 33 Therefore ^G3767 having been exalted ^G5312 [fn]to the right ^G1188 hand ^G1188 of God ^G2316, and having received ^G2983 from the Father ^G3962 the promise ^G1860 of the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151, He has poured ^G1632 out ^G1632 this ^G3778 which ^G3739 you both ^G2532 see ^G991 and hear ^G191. 34 For David ^G1138 did not ascend ^G305 into the heavens ^G3772, but he himself ^G846 says ^G3004:

‘THE [fn]LORD ^G2962 SAID ^G3004 TO MY LORD ^G2962,

“SIT ^G2521 AT MY RIGHT ^G1188 HAND ^G1188,

35 UNTIL ^G2193 I PUT ^G5087 YOUR ENEMIES ^G2190 AS A FOOTSTOOL ^G5286 FOR YOUR FEET ^G4228.”’

36 Therefore ^G3767 let all ^G3956 the house ^G3624 of Israel ^G2474 know ^G1097 for certain ^G806 that God ^G2316 has made ^G4160 Him both ^G2532 Lord ^G2962 and [fn]Christ ^G5547—this ^G3778 Jesus ^G2424 whom ^G3739 you crucified ^G4717.”

About Three Thousand Souls Saved

37 Now ^G1161 when they heard ^G191 this, they were [fn]pierced ^G2660 to the heart ^G2588, and said ^G3004 to Peter ^G4074 and the rest ^G3062 of the apostles ^G652, “Men ^G435, brothers ^G80, what ^G5101 should we do ^G4160?”

38 And Peter ^G4074 said to them, “Repent ^G3340, and each ^G1538 of you be baptized ^G907 in the name ^G3686 of Jesus ^G2424 Christ ^G5547 [fn]for the forgiveness ^G859 of your sins ^G266; and you will receive ^G2983 the gift ^G1431 of the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151. 39 For the promise ^G1860 is for you and your children ^G5043 and for all ^G3956 who ^G3588 are far ^G3112 off ^G3112, as many ^G3745 as the Lord ^G2962 our God ^G2316 will call ^G4341 to Himself.” 40 And with many ^G4183 other ^G2087 words ^G3056 he solemnly ^G1263 bore ^G1263 witness ^G1263 and kept on exhorting ^G3870 them, saying ^G3004, “[fn]Be saved ^G4982 from this ^G3778 crooked ^G4646 generation ^G1074!” 41 So ^G3767 then ^G3767, those ^G3588 who had received ^G588 his word ^G3056 were baptized ^G907; and that day ^G2250 there were added ^G4369 about ^G5616 three ^G5153 thousand ^G5153 souls ^G5590. 42 And they were continually ^G4342 devoting ^G4342 themselves ^G4342 to the apostles’ ^G652 teaching ^G1322 and to the fellowship ^G2842, to the breaking ^G2800 of bread ^G740 and to the prayers ^G4335.

43 And fear ^G5401 came ^G1096 upon every ^G3956 soul ^G5590; and many ^G4183 wonders ^G5059 and [fn]signs ^G4592 were taking ^G1096 place ^G1096 through ^G1223 the apostles ^G652. 44 And all ^G3956 those ^G3588 who had believed ^G4100 [fn]were together ^{G1909 G3588 G846} and had ^G2192 all ^G537 things ^G537 in common ^G2839; 45 and they began selling ^G4097 their property ^G2933 and possessions ^G5223 and were dividing ^G1266 them up ^G1266 with all ^G3956, as anyone ^G5100 might have ^G2192 need ^G5532. 46 And daily ^G2250 G2596 devoting ^G4342 themselves ^G4342 with one ^G3661 accord ^G3661 in the temple ^G2413 and breaking ^G2806 bread ^G740 [fn]from house ^G3624 to house ^G3624, they were taking ^G3335 their [fn]meals ^G5160 together ^G3335 with gladness ^G20 and [fn]sincerity ^G858 of heart ^G2588, 47 praising ^G134 God ^G2316 and having ^G2192 favor ^G5485 with all ^G3650 the people ^G2992. And the Lord ^G2962 was adding ^G4369 [fn]to their number ^G846 daily ^G2250 G2596 those ^G3588 who were being saved ^G4982.
