Israel Multiplies in Egypt

Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:1 -

Now these are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob; they came each one [fn]with his household:

Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:2 - Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah;
Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:3 - Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin;
Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:4 - Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:5 - And all the [fn]persons who came from the loins of Jacob were seventy [fn]in number, but Joseph was already in Egypt.
Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:6 - Then Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation.
Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:7 - But the sons of Israel were fruitful and [fn]increased and multiplied and became exceedingly [fn]mighty, so that the land was filled with them.
Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:8 -

And a new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.

Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:9 - And he said to his people, “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are [fn]more and mightier than we.
Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:10 - “Come, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply and it be [fn]in the event of war, that they also join themselves to those who hate us and fight against us and go up from the land.”
Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:11 - So they appointed taskmasters over them to afflict them with [fn]hard labors. And they built for Pharaoh storage cities, Pithom and Raamses.
Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:12 - But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they [fn]spread out, so that they were in dread of the sons of Israel.
Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:13 - So the Egyptians brutally compelled the sons of Israel to slave labor;
Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:14 - and they made their lives bitter with [fn]hard slave labor in mortar and bricks and in all kinds of slave labor in the field, all their slave labor which they brutally [fn]compelled them to do.
Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:15 -

Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom [fn]was named Shiphrah and the other [fn]was named Puah;

Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:16 - and he said, “When you are helping the Hebrew women to give birth and see them upon the birthstool, if it is a son, then you shall put him to death; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”
Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:17 - But the midwives [fn]feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had spoken to them, but let the boys live.
Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:18 - So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and let the boys live?”
Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:19 - Then the midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife can come to them.”
Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:20 - So God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied and became very [fn]mighty.
Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:21 - Now it happened that because the midwives [fn]feared God, He made [fn]households for them.
Unchecked Copy BoxExo 1:22 - And Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “Every son who is born [fn]you are to cast into the Nile, and every daughter you are to keep alive.”
