The Harlotries of Oholah and Oholibah

1 The word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068 came ^H1961 to me again, saying ^H559,

2 “Son ^H1121 of man ^H120, there were two ^H8147 women ^H802, the daughters ^H1323 of one ^H259 mother ^H517; 3 and they played ^H2181 the ^H2181 harlot ^H2181 in Egypt ^H4714. They played ^H2181 the ^H2181 harlot ^H2181 in their youth ^H5271; there ^H8033 their breasts ^H7699 were pressed ^H4600, and there ^H8033 their virgin ^H1331 bosom ^H1717 was handled ^H6213. 4 Their names ^H8034 were Oholah ^H170 the elder ^H1419 and Oholibah ^H172 her sister ^H269. And they became ^H1961 Mine, and they bore ^H3205 sons ^H1121 and daughters ^H1323. And as for their names ^H8034, Samaria ^H8111 is Oholah ^H170 and Jerusalem ^H3389 is Oholibah ^H172.

5 “Oholah ^H170 played ^H2181 the ^H2181 harlot ^H2181 [fn]while ^H8478 she was Mine ^H8478; and she lusted ^H5689 after ^H5921 her lovers ^H157, after ^H413 the Assyrians ^H804, her neighbors ^H7138, 6 who were clothed ^H3847 in purple ^H8504, governors ^H6346 and officials ^H5461, all ^H3605 of them desirable ^H2531 young ^H970 men ^H970, horsemen ^H6571 riding ^H7392 on horses ^H5483. 7 She gave ^H5414 her harlotries ^H8457 to them, all ^H3605 of them the choicest ^H4005 [fn]men ^H1121 of Assyria ^H804; and with all ^H3605 whom ^H834 she lusted ^H5689 after, with all ^H3605 their idols ^H1544 she defiled ^H2930 herself. 8 She did not forsake ^H5800 her harlotries ^H8457 from the time in Egypt ^H4714; for in her youth ^H5271 [fn]men had lain ^H7901 with her, and they handled ^H6213 her virgin ^H1331 bosom ^H1717 and poured ^H8210 out ^H8210 their harlotry ^H8457 on her. 9 Therefore ^H3651, I gave ^H5414 her into the hand ^H3027 of her lovers ^H157, into the hand ^H3027 of the [fn]Assyrians ^H1121 H804, after ^H5921 whom ^H834 she lusted ^H5689. 10 They uncovered ^H1540 her nakedness ^H6172; they took ^H3947 her sons ^H1121 and her daughters ^H1323, but they killed ^H2026 her with the sword ^H2719. Thus she became ^H1961 a despised name ^H8034 among women ^H802, and they executed ^H6213 judgments ^H8196 on her.

11 “Now her sister ^H269 Oholibah ^H172 saw ^H7200 this, yet she was ^H7843 more ^H4480 corrupt ^H7843 in her lust ^H5691 than ^H4480 she, and her harlotries ^H8457 were more ^H4480 than ^H4480 the harlotries ^H2183 of her sister ^H269. 12 She lusted ^H5689 after ^H413 the [fn]Assyrians ^H1121 H804, governors ^H6346 and officials ^H5461, the ones ^H7138 near ^H7138, magnificently ^H4358 dressed ^H3847, horsemen ^H6571 riding ^H7392 on horses ^H5483, all ^H3605 of them desirable ^H2531 choice ^H970 men ^H970. 13 And I saw ^H7200 that she had defiled ^H2930 herself; they both ^H8147 took [fn]the same ^H259 way ^H1870. 14 So she increased ^H3254 her harlotries ^H8457. And she saw ^H7200 men ^H376 portrayed ^H2707 on the wall ^H7023, images ^H6754 of the Chaldeans ^H3778 portrayed ^H2710 with vermilion ^H8350, 15 girded ^H2289 with belts ^H232 on their loins ^H4975, with flowing ^H5628 turbans ^H2871 on their heads ^H7218, all ^H3605 of them looking ^H4758 like officers ^H7991, in the likeness ^H1823 of the [fn]Babylonians ^H1121 H894 in Chaldea ^H3778, the land ^H776 of their birth ^H4138. 16 [fn]And she saw ^H4758 H5869 them and lusted ^H5689 after ^H5921 them and sent ^H7971 messengers ^H4397 to them in Chaldea ^H3778. 17 So the [fn]Babylonians ^H1121 H894 came ^H935 to her to the bed ^H4904 of love ^H1730 and defiled ^H2930 her with their harlotry ^H8457. Then she became ^H2930 defiled ^H2930 by them, and her soul ^H5315 became ^H3363 disgusted ^H3363 with them. 18 And she uncovered ^H1540 her harlotries ^H8457 and uncovered ^H1540 her nakedness ^H6172; then My soul ^H5315 became ^H3363 disgusted ^H3363 with her, as My soul ^H5315 had become ^H5361 disgusted ^H5361 with her sister ^H269. 19 Yet she multiplied ^H7235 her harlotries ^H8457, remembering ^H2142 the days ^H3117 of her youth ^H5271, when ^H834 she played ^H2181 the ^H2181 harlot ^H2181 in the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714. 20 She lusted ^H5689 after ^H5921 their paramours ^H6370, whose ^H834 flesh ^H1320 is like the flesh ^H1320 of donkeys ^H2543 and whose issue ^H2231 is like the issue ^H2231 of horses ^H5483. 21 Thus you [fn]longed ^H6485 for ^H6485 the lewdness ^H2154 of your youth ^H5271, when [fn]the Egyptians ^H4714 handled ^H6213 your bosom ^H1717 because ^H4616 of the breasts ^H7699 of your youth ^H5271.

22 “Therefore ^H3651, O Oholibah ^H172, thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, ‘Behold ^H2009, I will arouse ^H5782 your lovers ^H157 against ^H5921 you, those with whom ^H834 your soul ^H5315 was disgusted ^H5361, and I will bring ^H935 them against ^H5921 you from every ^H5439 side ^H5439: 23 the [fn]Babylonians ^H1121 H894 and all ^H3605 the Chaldeans ^H3778, Pekod ^H6489 and Shoa ^H7772 and Koa ^H6970, and all ^H3605 the [fn]Assyrians ^H1121 H804 with them; desirable ^H2531 choice ^H970 men ^H970, governors ^H6346 and officials ^H5461, all ^H3605 of them, officers ^H7991 and [fn]men ^H7121 of renown ^H7121, all ^H3605 of them riding ^H7392 on horses ^H5483. 24 They will come ^H935 against ^H5921 you with weapons ^H2021, chariots ^H7393 and [fn]wagons ^H1534, and with an assembly ^H6951 of peoples ^H5971. They will set ^H7760 themselves against ^H5921 you on every ^H5439 side ^H5439 with large ^H6793 shield ^H6793 and shield ^H4043 and helmet ^H6959; and I will give ^H5414 the judgment ^H4941 to them, and they will judge ^H8199 you according to their judgments ^H4941. 25 And I will set ^H5414 My jealousy ^H7068 against you, that they may deal ^H6213 with you in wrath ^H2534. They will remove ^H5493 your nose ^H639 and your ears ^H241; and your [fn]survivors ^H319 will fall ^H5307 by the sword ^H2719. They will take ^H3947 your sons ^H1121 and your daughters ^H1323; and your [fn]survivors ^H319 will be consumed ^H398 by the fire ^H784. 26 They will also strip ^H6584 you of your clothes ^H899 and take ^H3947 away your beautiful ^H8597 jewelry ^H3627. 27 Thus I will make your lewdness ^H2154 and your harlotry ^H2184 brought from the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714 to cease ^H7673 from you, so that you will not lift ^H5375 up ^H5375 your eyes ^H5869 to them or remember ^H2142 Egypt ^H4714 anymore ^H5750.’ 28 For thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, ‘Behold ^H2009, I will give ^H5414 you into the hand ^H3027 of those whom ^H834 you hate ^H8130, into the hand ^H3027 of those with whom ^H834 your soul ^H5315 was disgusted ^H5361. 29 They will deal ^H6213 with you in hatred ^H8135, take ^H3947 all ^H3605 the fruit ^H3018 of your labor ^H3018, and leave ^H5800 you naked ^H5903 and bare ^H6181. And the nakedness ^H6172 of your harlotries ^H2183 will be uncovered ^H1540, both your lewdness ^H2154 and your harlotries ^H8457. 30 These ^H428 things ^H428 will be done ^H6213 to you because you have played ^H2181 the ^H2181 harlot ^H2181 with the nations ^H1471, because ^H5921 H834 you have defiled ^H2930 yourself with their idols ^H1544. 31 You have walked ^H1980 in the way ^H1870 of your sister ^H269; therefore I will give ^H5414 her cup ^H3563 into your hand ^H3027.’ 32 Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068,

‘You will drink ^H8354 your sister’s ^H269 cup ^H3563,

Which is deep ^H6013 and wide ^H7342.

[fn]You will be laughed ^H6712 at and held in derision ^H3933;

It contains ^H3557 much ^H4767.

33 ‘You will be filled ^H4390 with drunkenness ^H7943 and sorrow ^H3015,

The cup ^H3563 of horror ^H8047 and desolation ^H8077,

The cup ^H3563 of your sister ^H269 Samaria ^H8111.

34 ‘You will drink ^H8354 it and drain ^H4680 it.

Then you will gnaw ^H1633 its fragments ^H2789

And tear ^H5423 your breasts ^H7699;

for I have spoken ^H1696,’ declares ^H5002 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068. 35 Therefore ^H3651, thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, ‘Because ^H3282 you have forgotten ^H7911 Me and cast ^H7993 Me behind ^H310 your back ^H1458, bear ^H5375 now ^H1571 the punishment of your lewdness ^H2154 and your harlotries ^H8457.’”

36 Moreover, Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H559 to me, “Son ^H1121 of man ^H120, will you judge ^H8199 Oholah ^H170 and Oholibah ^H172? Then declare ^H5046 to them their abominations ^H8441. 37 For they have committed ^H5003 adultery ^H5003, and blood ^H1818 is on their hands ^H3027. Thus they have committed ^H5003 adultery ^H5003 with their idols ^H1544 and even ^H1571 caused their sons ^H1121, whom ^H834 they bore ^H3205 to Me, to pass ^H5674 through ^H5674 the fire to [fn]them as food ^H402. 38 Again ^H5750, they have done ^H6213 this ^H2088 to Me: they have defiled ^H2930 My sanctuary ^H4720 on the same ^H1931 day ^H3117 and have profaned ^H2490 My sabbaths ^H7676. 39 For when they had slaughtered ^H7819 their children ^H1121 for their idols ^H1544, they entered ^H935 My sanctuary ^H4720 on the same ^H1931 day ^H3117 to profane ^H2490 it; and behold ^H2009, thus ^H3541 they did ^H6213 within ^H8432 My house ^H1004.

40 “Furthermore ^H637, [fn]they have even ^H3588 sent ^H7971 for men ^H376 who come ^H935 from afar ^H4801, to whom ^H834 a messenger ^H4397 was sent ^H7971; and behold ^H2009, they came ^H935—for whom ^H834 you bathed ^H7364, painted ^H3583 your eyes ^H5869, and decorated ^H5710 yourselves ^H5710 with ornaments ^H5716; 41 and you sat ^H3427 on a splendid ^H3519 couch ^H4296 with a table ^H7979 arranged ^H6186 before ^H6440 it on which you had set ^H7760 My incense ^H7004 and My oil ^H8081. 42 The sound ^H6963 of a multitude ^H1995 at ease ^H7961 was with her; and drunkards ^H5433 were brought ^H935 from the wilderness ^H4057 with men ^H376 of the [fn]common ^H7230 H120 sort ^H7230 H120. And they put ^H5414 bracelets ^H6781 on [fn]the hands ^H3027 of the women and beautiful ^H8597 crowns ^H5850 on their heads ^H7218.

43 “Then I said ^H559 concerning her who was worn ^H1087 out ^H1087 by adulteries ^H5004, ‘[fn]Will they now ^H6258 commit ^H2181 harlotry ^H2181 with her when she is thus?’ 44 [fn]But they went ^H935 in ^H935 to her as they would go ^H935 in ^H935 to a harlot ^H2181. Thus ^H3651 they went ^H935 in ^H935 to Oholah ^H170 and to Oholibah ^H172, the lewd ^H2154 women ^H802. 45 But they, righteous ^H6662 men ^H376, will judge ^H8199 them with the judgment ^H4941 of adulteresses ^H5003 and with the judgment ^H4941 of women who shed ^H8210 blood ^H1818, because ^H3588 they are adulteresses ^H5003 and blood ^H1818 is on their hands ^H3027.

46 “For thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, ‘Bring ^H5927 up ^H5927 an assembly ^H6951 against ^H5921 them and give ^H5414 them over to terror ^H2113 and plunder ^H957. 47 The assembly ^H6951 will stone ^H7275 them with stones ^H68 and cut ^H1254 them down ^H1254 with their swords ^H2719; they will kill ^H2026 their sons ^H1121 and their daughters ^H1323 and burn ^H8313 their houses ^H1004 with fire ^H784. 48 Thus I will make lewdness ^H2154 cease ^H7673 from the land ^H776, that all ^H3605 women ^H802 may be chastised ^H3256 and not commit ^H6213 [fn]lewdness ^H2154 as you have done. 49 Your lewdness ^H2154 [fn]will be requited ^H5414 upon you, and you will bear ^H5375 the sin ^H2399 of worshiping your idols ^H1544; thus you will know ^H3045 that I am Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068.’”
