A Wife for Isaac

1 Now Abraham ^H85 was ^H2204 old ^H2204, advanced ^H935 in age ^H3117; and Yahweh ^H3068 had blessed ^H1288 Abraham ^H85 in every ^H3605 way ^H3605.

2 And Abraham ^H85 said ^H559 to his servant ^H5650, the oldest ^H2205 of his household ^H1004, who ^H4910 ruled ^H4910 over all ^H3605 that he owned, “Please ^H4994 place ^H7760 your hand ^H3027 under ^H8478 my thigh ^H3409, 3 and I will make you swear ^H7650 by Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of heaven ^H8064 and the God ^H430 of earth ^H776, that you shall not take ^H3947 a wife ^H802 for my son ^H1121 from the daughters ^H1323 of the Canaanites ^H3669, among ^H7130 whom ^H834 I live ^H3427, 4 but you will go ^H1980 to my land ^H776 and to my kin ^H4138, and take ^H3947 a wife ^H802 for my son ^H1121 Isaac ^H3327.” 5 And the servant ^H5650 said ^H559 to him, “Suppose ^H194 the woman ^H802 is ^H14 not willing ^H14 to follow ^H1980 H310 me to this ^H2088 land ^H776; should I indeed ^H7725 take ^H7725 your son ^H1121 back ^H7725 to the land ^H776 from where ^H834 H8033 you came ^H3318?” 6 Then Abraham ^H85 said ^H559 to him, “Beware ^H8104 lest ^H6435 you take ^H7725 my son ^H1121 back ^H7725 there ^H8033! 7 Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of heaven ^H8064, who ^H834 took ^H3947 me from my father’s ^H1 house ^H1004 and from the land ^H776 of my kin ^H4138, and who ^H834 spoke ^H1696 to me and who ^H834 swore ^H7650 to me, saying ^H559, ‘To your seed ^H2233 I will give ^H5414 this ^H2088 land ^H776,’ He will send ^H7971 His angel ^H4397 before ^H6440 you, and you will take ^H3947 a wife ^H802 for my son ^H1121 from there ^H8033. 8 But if ^H518 the woman ^H802 is ^H14 not willing ^H14 to follow ^H1980 H310 you, then you will be ^H5352 free ^H5352 from this ^H2088 oath ^H7621 of mine; only ^H7534 do not take ^H7725 my son ^H1121 back ^H7725 there ^H8033.” 9 So the servant ^H5650 placed ^H7760 his hand ^H3027 under ^H8478 the thigh ^H3409 of Abraham ^H85 his master ^H113 and swore ^H7650 to him concerning ^H5921 this ^H2088 matter ^H1697.

10 Then the servant ^H5650 took ^H3947 ten ^H6235 camels ^H1581 from the camels ^H1581 of his master ^H113, and he went ^H1980 with all ^H3605 kinds of good ^H2898 things ^H2898 of his master’s ^H113 in his hand ^H3027. So he arose ^H6965 and went ^H1980 to [fn]Mesopotamia ^H763, to the city ^H5892 of Nahor ^H5152. 11 And he made the camels ^H1581 kneel ^H1288 down ^H1288 outside ^H4480 H2351 the city ^H5892 by the well ^H875 of water ^H4325 at evening ^H6153 time ^H6256, the time ^H6256 when the women go ^H3318 out ^H3318 to draw ^H7579 water ^H7579. 12 And he said ^H559, “O Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of my master ^H113 Abraham ^H85, please ^H4994 cause ^H7136 this to happen ^H7136 before ^H6440 me today ^H3117, and show ^H6213 lovingkindness ^H2617 to my master ^H113 Abraham ^H85. 13 Behold ^H2009, I am standing ^H5324 by the spring ^H5869 of water ^H4325, and the daughters ^H1323 of the men ^H376 of the city ^H5892 are coming ^H3318 out ^H3318 to draw ^H7579 water ^H4325; 14 now may it be that the young woman ^H5291 to whom ^H834 I say ^H559, ‘Please ^H4994 let ^H5186 down ^H5186 your jar ^H3537 so that I may drink ^H8354,’ and she says ^H559, ‘Drink ^H8354, and I will give ^H8248 water to your camels ^H1581 to drink ^H8248 also ^H1571’—may she be the one whom You have decided ^H3198 for Your servant ^H5650 Isaac ^H3327; and by this I will know ^H3045 that You have shown ^H6213 lovingkindness ^H2617 to my master ^H113.”

Rebekah Goes with Abraham’s Servant

15 And before ^H2962 he had finished ^H3615 speaking ^H1696, behold ^H2009, Rebekah ^H7259 who ^H834 was born ^H3205 to Bethuel ^H1328 the son ^H1121 of Milcah ^H4435, the wife ^H802 of Abraham’s ^H85 brother ^H251 Nahor ^H5152, was coming ^H3318 out ^H3318 with her jar ^H3537 on her shoulder ^H7926.

Please ^H4994 tell ^H5046 me, is ^H3426 there ^H3426 a place ^H4725 for us to lodge ^H3885 in your father’s ^H1 house ^H1004?” 24 And she said ^H559 to him, “I am the daughter ^H1323 of Bethuel ^H1328, the son ^H1121 of Milcah ^H4435, whom ^H834 she bore ^H3205 to Nahor ^H5152.” 25 And she said ^H559 to him, “We have plenty ^H7227 of both ^H1571 straw ^H8401 and feed ^H4554, and a place ^H4725 to lodge ^H3885 in.” 26 Then the man ^H376 bowed ^H6915 low ^H6915 and worshiped ^H2331 Yahweh ^H3068. 27 And he said ^H559, “Blessed ^H1288 be Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of my master ^H113 Abraham ^H85, who ^H834 has not forsaken ^H5800 His lovingkindness ^H2617 and His truth ^H571 toward ^H4480 H5973 my master ^H113; as for me, Yahweh ^H3068 has guided ^H5148 me in the way ^H1870 to the house ^H1004 of my master’s ^H113 brothers ^H251.”

28 Then the young ^H5291 woman ^H5291 ran ^H7323 and told ^H5046 her mother’s ^H517 household ^H1004 about these ^H428 things ^H1697. 29 Now Rebekah ^H7259 had a brother ^H251 whose name ^H8034 was Laban ^H3837; and Laban ^H3837 ran ^H7323 outside ^H2351 to the man ^H376 at the spring ^H5869. 30 Now it happened ^H1961, when he saw ^H7200 the ring ^H5141 and the bracelets ^H6781 on his sister’s ^H269 [fn]wrists ^H3027, and when he heard ^H8085 the words ^H1697 of Rebekah ^H7259 his sister ^H269, saying ^H559, “[fn]This ^H3541 is what ^H3541 the man ^H376 said ^H1696 to me,” he came ^H935 out to the man ^H376; and behold ^H2009, he was standing ^H5975 by the camels ^H1581 at the spring ^H5869. 31 And he said ^H559, “Come ^H935 in ^H935, blessed ^H1288 of Yahweh ^H3068! Why ^H4100 do you stand ^H5975 outside ^H2351 since I have prepared ^H6437 the house ^H1004 and a place ^H4725 for the camels ^H1581?” 32 So the man ^H376 came ^H935 into the house ^H1004. Then [fn]Laban unloaded ^H6605 the camels ^H1581, and he gave ^H5414 straw ^H8401 and feed ^H4554 to the camels ^H1581, and water ^H4325 to wash ^H7364 his feet ^H7272 and the feet ^H7272 of the men ^H376 who ^H834 were with him. 33 Then food was set ^H7760 before ^H6440 him to eat ^H398, but he said ^H559, “I will not eat ^H398 until ^H5704 H518 I have spoken ^H1696 my words ^H1697.” And he said ^H559, “Speak ^H1696!” 34 So he said ^H559, “I am Abraham’s ^H85 servant ^H5650. 35 And Yahweh ^H3068 has greatly ^H3966 blessed ^H1288 my master ^H113, so he has become ^H1431 great ^H1431; and He has given ^H5414 him flocks ^H6629 and herds ^H1241, and silver ^H3701 and gold ^H2091, and male slaves ^H5650 and female slaves ^H8198, and camels ^H1581 and donkeys ^H2543. 36 Now Sarah ^H8283 my master’s ^H113 wife ^H802 bore ^H3205 a son ^H1121 to my master ^H113 [fn]in her old ^H2209 age ^H2209, and he has given ^H5414 him all ^H3605 that he has. 37 And my master ^H113 made me swear ^H7650, saying ^H559, ‘You shall not take ^H3947 a wife ^H802 for my son ^H1121 from the daughters ^H1323 of the Canaanites ^H3669, in whose ^H834 land ^H776 I [fn]live ^H3427; 38 but you shall go ^H1980 to my father’s ^H1 house ^H1004 and to my family ^H4940, and take ^H3947 a wife ^H802 for my son ^H1121.’ 39 Then I said ^H559 to my master ^H113, ‘Suppose ^H194 the woman ^H802 does not follow ^H1980 H310 me.’ 40 And he said ^H559 to me, ‘Yahweh ^H3068, before ^H6440 whom ^H834 I have walked ^H1980, will send ^H7971 His angel ^H4397 with you and will make ^H6743 your journey ^H1870 successful ^H6743, and you will take ^H3947 a wife ^H802 for my son ^H1121 from my family ^H4940 and from my father’s ^H1 house ^H1004. 41 Then ^H227 you will be ^H5352 free ^H5352 from my oath ^H423, when ^H3588 you come ^H935 to my relatives ^H4940. Now if ^H518 they do not give ^H5414 her to you, you will be free ^H5355 from my oath ^H423.’

42 “So I came ^H935 today ^H3117 to the spring ^H5869 and said ^H559, ‘O Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of my master ^H113 Abraham ^H85, if ^H518 now ^H4994 You will make ^H6743 my journey ^H1870 on which ^H834 I go ^H1980 successful ^H6743; 43 behold ^H2009, I am standing ^H5324 by the spring ^H5869 of water ^H4325, and may it be that the [fn]maiden ^H5959 who comes ^H3318 out ^H3318 to draw ^H7579, and to whom I say ^H559, “Please ^H4994 let ^H8248 me drink ^H8248 a little ^H4592 water ^H4325 from your jar ^H3537”; 44 and she will say ^H559 to me, “You drink ^H8354, and I will draw ^H7579 for your camels ^H1581 also ^H1571”; she is the woman ^H802 whom ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 has decided ^H3198 upon for my master’s ^H113 son ^H1121.’

45 “Before ^H2962 I had finished ^H3615 speaking ^H1696 in my heart ^H3820, behold ^H2009, Rebekah ^H7259 was coming ^H3318 out ^H3318 with her jar ^H3537 on her shoulder ^H7926, and she went ^H3381 down ^H3381 to the spring ^H5869 and drew ^H7579, and I said ^H559 to her, ‘Please ^H4994 give ^H8248 me a ^H8248 drink ^H8248.’ 46 Then she hurried ^H4116 and lowered ^H3381 her jar ^H3537 from her shoulder and said ^H559, ‘Drink ^H8354, and I will also ^H1571 give ^H8248 water to your camels ^H1581 to drink ^H8248’; so I drank ^H8354, and she also ^H1571 gave ^H8248 water to the camels ^H1581 to drink ^H8248. 47 Then I asked ^H7592 her and said ^H559, ‘Whose ^H4310 daughter ^H1323 are you?’ And she said ^H559, ‘The daughter ^H1323 of Bethuel ^H1328, Nahor’s ^H5152 son ^H1121, whom ^H834 Milcah ^H4435 bore ^H3205 to him’; and I put ^H7760 the ring ^H5141 on her nose ^H639 and the bracelets ^H6781 on her [fn]wrists ^H3027. 48 And I bowed ^H6915 low ^H6915 and worshiped ^H2331 Yahweh ^H3068; and I blessed ^H1288 Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of my master ^H113 Abraham ^H85, who ^H834 had guided ^H5148 me in the true ^H571 way ^H1870 to take ^H3947 the daughter ^H1323 of my master’s ^H113 [fn]relative ^H251 for his son ^H1121. 49 So now ^H6258 if ^H518 you are ^H3426 going ^H3426 to ^H3426 show ^H6213 lovingkindness ^H2617 and truth ^H571 with my master ^H113, tell ^H5046 me; and if ^H518 not, tell me ^H5046, that I may turn ^H6437 to the right ^H3225 or ^H176 to the left ^H8040.”

50 Then Laban ^H3837 and Bethuel ^H1328 answered ^H6030 and said ^H559, “The matter ^H1697 comes ^H3318 from Yahweh ^H3068; so we cannot ^H3201 H3808 speak ^H1696 to you bad ^H7451 or ^H176 good ^H2896. 51 Behold ^H2009, Rebekah ^H7259 is before ^H6440 you, take ^H3947 her and go ^H1980, and let her be the wife ^H802 of your master’s ^H113 son ^H1121, as Yahweh ^H3068 has spoken ^H1696.”

52 Now it happened that when ^H834 Abraham’s ^H85 servant ^H5650 heard ^H8085 their words ^H1697, he bowed ^H2331 himself to the ground ^H776 [fn]before Yahweh ^H3068. 53 The servant ^H5650 brought ^H3318 out ^H3318 articles ^H3627 of silver ^H3701 and articles ^H3627 of gold ^H2091, and garments ^H899, and gave ^H5414 them to Rebekah ^H7259; he also gave ^H5414 precious ^H4030 things ^H4030 to her brother ^H251 and to her mother ^H517. 54 Then he and the men ^H376 who ^H834 were with him ate ^H398 and drank ^H8354 and spent ^H3885 the ^H3885 night ^H3885. And then they arose ^H6965 in the morning ^H1242, and he said ^H559, “Send ^H7971 me away ^H7971 to my master ^H113.” 55 But her brother ^H251 and her mother ^H517 said ^H559, “Let the young ^H5291 woman ^H5291 stay ^H3427 with us a few days ^H3117, or ^H176 even ten ^H6218; afterward ^H310 she will go ^H1980.” 56 And he said ^H559 to them, “Do not delay ^H309 me, since Yahweh ^H3068 has made ^H6743 my way ^H1870 successful ^H6743. Send ^H7971 me away ^H7971 that I may go ^H1980 to my master ^H113.” 57 And they said ^H559, “We will call ^H7121 the young ^H5291 woman ^H5291 and ask ^H7592 about [fn]her wishes ^H6310.” 58 Then they called ^H7121 Rebekah ^H7259 and said ^H559 to her, “Will you go ^H1980 with this ^H2088 man ^H376?” And she said ^H559, “I will go ^H1980.” 59 Thus they sent ^H7971 away ^H7971 their sister ^H269 Rebekah ^H7259 and her nurse ^H3243 with Abraham’s ^H85 servant ^H5650 and his men ^H376. 60 And they blessed ^H1288 Rebekah ^H7259 and said ^H559 to her,

“May you, our sister ^H269,

Become ^H1961 thousands ^H505 of ten ^H7233 thousands ^H7233,

And may your seed ^H2233 possess ^H3423

The gate ^H8179 of those who hate ^H8130 him.”

61 Then Rebekah ^H7259 arose ^H6965 with her young ^H5291 women ^H5291, and they mounted ^H7392 the camels ^H1581 and went ^H1980 H310 after the man ^H376. So the servant ^H5650 took ^H3947 Rebekah ^H7259 and went ^H1980.

Rebekah Becomes Isaac’s Wife

62 Now Isaac ^H3327 had come ^H935 from going ^H935 to Beer-lahai-roi ^H883, for he [fn]was living ^H3427 in the land ^H776 of the [fn]Negev ^H5045.

63 And Isaac ^H3327 went ^H3318 out ^H3318 to [fn]muse ^H7742 in the field ^H7704 toward ^H6437 evening ^H6153; and he lifted ^H5375 up ^H5375 his eyes ^H5869 and looked ^H7200, and behold ^H2009, camels ^H1581 were coming ^H935. 64 And Rebekah ^H7259 lifted ^H5375 up ^H5375 her eyes ^H5869 and saw ^H7200 Isaac ^H3327 and dismounted ^H5307 from the camel ^H1581. 65 Then she said ^H559 to the servant ^H5650, “Who ^H4310 is that man ^H376 walking ^H1980 in the field ^H7704 to meet ^H7122 us?” And the servant ^H5650 said ^H559, “He is my master ^H113.” Then she took ^H3947 her [fn]veil ^H6809 and covered ^H3680 herself. 66 And the servant ^H5650 recounted ^H5608 to Isaac ^H3327 all ^H3605 the things ^H1697 that he had done ^H6213. 67 Then Isaac ^H3327 brought ^H935 her into his mother ^H517 Sarah’s ^H8283 tent ^H168, and he took ^H3947 Rebekah ^H7259, and she became ^H1961 his wife ^H802, and he loved ^H157 her. Thus, Isaac ^H3327 was comforted ^H5162 after ^H310 his mother’s ^H517 death.
