Clean and Unclean Animals

1 Yahweh ^H3068 spoke ^H1696 again to Moses ^H4872 and to Aaron ^H175, saying ^H559 to them,

2 “Speak ^H1696 to the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478, saying ^H559, ‘These ^H2088 are the creatures ^H2416 which ^H834 you may eat ^H398 from all ^H3605 the animals ^H929 that are on the earth ^H776. 3 Whatever ^H3605 divides ^H6536 a hoof ^H6541, thus making ^H8156 split ^H8156 hoofs ^H6541, and chews ^H5927 the cud ^H1625, among the animals ^H929, that you may eat ^H398. 4 Nevertheless ^H389, you shall not eat ^H398 of these ^H2088, among those which chew ^H5927 the cud ^H1625 or among those which divide ^H6536 the hoof ^H6541: the camel ^H1581, for though it chews ^H5927 cud ^H1625, it does not divide ^H6536 the hoof ^H6541; it is unclean ^H2931 to you. 5 Likewise, the [fn]shaphan ^H8227, for though it chews ^H5927 cud ^H1625, it does not divide ^H6536 the hoof ^H6541; it is unclean ^H2931 to you; 6 the [fn]rabbit ^H768 also, for though it chews ^H5927 cud ^H1625, it does not divide ^H6536 the hoof ^H6541; it is unclean ^H2931 to you; 7 and the pig ^H2386, for though it divides ^H6536 the hoof ^H6541, thus making ^H8156 a ^H8156 split ^H8156 hoof ^H6541, it does not chew ^H1641 cud ^H1625; it is unclean ^H2931 to you. 8 You shall not eat ^H398 of their flesh ^H1320, and you shall not ^H3808 touch ^H5060 their carcasses ^H5038; they are unclean ^H2931 to you.

9 ‘These ^H2088 you may eat ^H398, whatever ^H3605 H834 is in the water ^H4325: all ^H3605 that have fins ^H5579 and scales ^H7193, those in the water ^H4325, in the seas ^H3220, or in the rivers ^H5158, you may eat ^H398. 10 But whatever ^H3605 H834 is in the seas ^H3220 and in the rivers ^H5158 that does not ^H369 have ^H369 fins ^H5579 and scales ^H7193 among ^H4480 all ^H3605 the swarming ^H8318 life ^H8318 of the water ^H4325, and among ^H4480 all ^H3605 the living ^H2416 creatures ^H5315 that are in the water ^H4325, they are detestable ^H8263 things ^H8263 to you, 11 and they shall be detestable ^H8263 to you; you may not eat ^H398 of their flesh ^H1320, and their carcasses ^H5038 you shall detest ^H8262. 12 Whatever ^H3605 H834 in the water ^H4325 does not ^H369 have ^H369 fins ^H5579 and scales ^H7193 is detestable ^H8263 to you.

13 ‘These ^H428, moreover, you shall detest ^H8262 among ^H4480 the birds ^H5775; they shall not be eaten ^H398; they are detestable ^H8263: the [fn]eagle ^H5404 and the vulture ^H6538 and the [fn]buzzard ^H5822, 14 and the kite ^H1676 and the falcon ^H344 in its kind ^H4327, 15 every ^H3605 raven ^H6158 in its kind ^H4327, 16 and the ostrich ^H3284 and the owl ^H8464 and the gull ^H7828 and the hawk ^H5322 in its kind ^H4327, 17 and the little ^H3563 owl ^H3563 and the cormorant ^H7994 and the [fn]great ^H3244 owl ^H3244, 18 and the white ^H8580 owl ^H8580 and the [fn]pelican ^H6893 and the carrion ^H7360 vulture ^H7360, 19 and the stork ^H2624, the heron ^H601 in its kinds ^H4327, and the hoopoe ^H1744, and the bat ^H5847.

20 ‘All ^H3605 the swarming ^H8318 things that fly ^H5775 and that walk ^H1980 on all fours ^H702 are detestable ^H8263 to you. 21 Yet ^H389 these ^H2088 you may eat ^H398 among ^H4480 all ^H3605 the swarming ^H8318 things that fly ^H5775 and that walk ^H1980 on all fours ^H702: those which ^H834 have above ^H4480 H4605 their feet ^H7272 jointed legs ^H3767 with which ^H1992 to jump ^H5425 on the earth ^H776. 22 These ^H428 of them you may eat ^H398: the locust ^H697 in its kinds ^H4327 and the devastating ^H5556 locust ^H5556 in its kinds ^H4327 and the cricket ^H2728 in its kinds ^H4327 and the grasshopper ^H2284 in its kinds ^H4327. 23 But all ^H3605 other swarming ^H8318 things that fly ^H5775 and that ^H834 are four-footed ^H702 H7272 are detestable ^H8263 to you.

24 ‘By these ^H428, moreover, you will be made ^H2930 unclean ^H2930: whoever ^H3605 touches ^H5060 their carcasses ^H5038 becomes ^H2930 unclean ^H2930 until ^H5704 evening ^H6153, 25 and whoever ^H3605 picks ^H5375 up ^H5375 any ^H4480 of their carcasses ^H5038 shall wash ^H3526 his clothes ^H899 and be ^H2930 unclean ^H2930 until ^H5704 evening ^H6153. 26 Concerning all ^H3605 the animals ^H929 which ^H834 divide ^H6536 the hoof ^H6541 but do not make ^H8156 a ^H8156 split ^H8156 hoof or which do not chew ^H5927 cud ^H1625, they are unclean ^H2931 to you: whoever ^H3605 touches ^H5060 them becomes ^H2930 unclean ^H2930. 27 Also whatever ^H3605 walks ^H1980 on its paws ^H3709, among all ^H3605 the creatures ^H2416 that walk ^H1980 on all fours ^H702, are unclean ^H2931 to you; whoever ^H3605 touches ^H5060 their carcasses ^H5038 becomes ^H2930 unclean ^H2930 until ^H5704 evening ^H6153, 28 and the one who picks ^H5375 up ^H5375 their carcasses ^H5038 shall wash ^H3526 his clothes ^H899 and be ^H2930 unclean ^H2930 until ^H5704 evening ^H6153; they are unclean ^H2931 to you.

29 ‘Now these ^H2088 are to you the unclean ^H2931 among the swarming ^H8318 things ^H8318 which swarm ^H8317 on the earth ^H776: the mole ^H2467 and the mouse ^H5909 and the [fn]great ^H6632 lizard ^H6632 in its kinds ^H4327, 30 and the gecko ^H604 and the [fn]crocodile ^H3581 and the lizard ^H3911 and the [fn]sand ^H2546 reptile ^H2546 and the chameleon ^H8580. 31 These ^H428 are to you the unclean ^H2931 among all ^H3605 the swarming ^H8318 things ^H8318; whoever ^H3605 touches ^H5060 them when they are dead ^H4194 becomes ^H2930 unclean ^H2930 until ^H5704 evening ^H6153. 32 Also anything ^H3605 on which ^H834 one of them may fall ^H5307 when they are dead ^H4194 becomes ^H2930 unclean ^H2930, including ^H4480 any ^H3605 wooden ^H6086 article ^H3627 or ^H176 clothing ^H899 or ^H176 a skin ^H5785 or ^H176 a sack ^H8242—any ^H3605 article ^H3627 by which ^H834 work ^H4399 is done ^H6213—it shall be put ^H935 in the water ^H4325 and be ^H2930 unclean ^H2930 until ^H5704 evening ^H6153, then it becomes ^H2891 clean ^H2891. 33 As for any ^H3605 earthenware ^H2789 vessel ^H3627 into which ^H834 one of them may fall ^H5307, whatever ^H3605 H834 is in it becomes ^H2930 unclean ^H2930, and you shall break ^H7665 [fn]the vessel. 34 Any ^H4480 H3605 of the [fn]food ^H400 which ^H834 may be eaten ^H398, on which ^H834 water ^H4325 comes ^H935, shall become ^H2930 unclean ^H2930, and any ^H3605 [fn]liquid ^H4945 which ^H834 may be ^H8354 drunk ^H8354 in every ^H3605 vessel ^H3627 shall become ^H2930 unclean ^H2930. 35 Everything ^H3605, moreover, on which ^H834 part of their carcass ^H5038 may fall ^H5307 becomes ^H2930 unclean ^H2930; an oven ^H8574 or a [fn]stove ^H3600 shall be ^H5422 smashed ^H5422; they are unclean ^H2931 and shall continue ^H1961 as unclean ^H2931 to you. 36 Nevertheless ^H389 a spring ^H4599 or a cistern ^H953 [fn]collecting ^H4723 water ^H4325 shall be clean ^H2889, though the one who touches ^H5060 their carcass ^H5038 shall be ^H2930 unclean ^H2930. 37 And if ^H3588 a part of their carcass ^H5038 falls ^H5307 on any ^H3605 seed ^H2233 for sowing ^H2221 which ^H834 is to be sown ^H2232, it is clean ^H2889. 38 Though if ^H3588 water ^H4325 is put ^H5414 on the seed ^H2233 and a part of their carcass ^H5038 falls ^H5307 on it, it is unclean ^H2931 to you.

39 ‘Also if ^H3588 one of the animals ^H929 dies ^H4191 which ^H834 you have for food ^H402, the one who touches ^H5060 its carcass ^H5038 becomes ^H2930 unclean ^H2930 until ^H5704 evening ^H6153. 40 He too, who eats ^H398 some ^H4480 of its carcass ^H5038 shall wash ^H3526 his clothes ^H899 and be ^H2930 unclean ^H2930 until ^H5704 evening ^H6153, and the one who picks ^H5375 up ^H5375 its carcass ^H5038 shall wash ^H3526 his clothes ^H899 and be ^H2930 unclean ^H2930 until ^H5704 evening ^H6153.

41 ‘Now every ^H3605 swarming ^H8318 thing ^H8318 that swarms ^H8317 on the earth ^H776 is detestable ^H8263; it shall not be eaten ^H398. 42 Whatever ^H3605 goes ^H1980 on its belly ^H1512, and whatever ^H3605 goes ^H1980 on all fours ^H702, whatever ^H3605 has ^H7235 many ^H7235 feet ^H7272, in respect to every ^H3605 swarming ^H8318 thing ^H8318 that swarms ^H8317 on the earth ^H776, you shall not eat ^H398 them, for they are detestable ^H8263. 43 Do not render ^H8262 [fn]yourselves ^H5315 detestable ^H8262 through any ^H3605 of the swarming ^H8318 things ^H8318 that swarm ^H8317; and you shall not make ^H2930 yourselves unclean ^H2930 with them so that you become ^H2930 unclean ^H2930. 44 For I am Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430. Therefore, set ^H6942 yourselves apart ^H6942 as ^H6942 holy ^H6942 and be holy ^H6918, for I am holy ^H6918. And you shall not make ^H2930 yourselves ^H5315 unclean ^H2930 with any ^H3605 of the swarming ^H8318 things ^H8318 that move ^H7430 on the earth ^H776. 45 For I am Yahweh ^H3068 who brought ^H5927 you up ^H5927 from the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714 to be your God ^H430; thus you shall be holy ^H6918, for I am holy ^H6918.’”

46 This ^H2088 is the law ^H8451 regarding the animal ^H929 and the bird ^H5775 and every ^H3605 living ^H2416 thing ^H2416 that moves ^H7430 in the waters ^H4325 and everything ^H3605 that swarms ^H8317 on the earth ^H776, 47 to separate ^H914 between ^H996 the unclean ^H2931 and the clean ^H2889, and between ^H996 the edible ^H398 creature ^H2416 and the creature ^H2416 which ^H834 is not to be eaten ^H398.
