A Mother’s Oracle

1 The words ^H1697 of King ^H4428 Lemuel ^H3927, the [fn]oracle ^H4853 unto which ^H834 his mother ^H517 disciplined ^H3256 him:

2 What ^H4100, O my son ^H1248?

And what ^H4100, O son ^H1248 of my womb ^H990?

And what ^H4100, O son ^H1248 of my vows ^H5088?

3 Do not give ^H5414 your excellence ^H2428 to women ^H802,

Or your ways ^H1870 to that which blots ^H4229 out ^H4229 kings ^H4428.

4 It is not for kings ^H4428, O Lemuel ^H3927,

It is not for kings ^H4428 to drink ^H8354 wine ^H3196,

Or for rulers ^H7336 to desire ^H183 strong ^H7941 drink ^H8354,

5 Lest ^H6435 he drink ^H8354 and forget ^H7911 what is decreed ^H2710,

And pervert ^H8132 the justice ^H1779 of all ^H3605 the [fn]afflicted ^H1121 H6040.

6 Give ^H5414 strong ^H7941 drink ^H7941 to him who is perishing ^H6,

And wine ^H3196 to those whose soul ^H5315 is bitter ^H4751.

7 Let him drink ^H8354 and forget ^H7911 his poverty ^H7389

And he will not remember ^H2142 his trouble ^H5999 any ^H3808 longer ^H5750.
