The Prophetic Call to Samuel

1 Now the boy ^H5288 Samuel ^H8050 was attending ^H8334 to ^H8334 the service ^H8334 of the LORD ^H3068 before ^H6440 Eli ^H5941. And word ^H1697 from the LORD ^H3068 was rare ^H3368 in those ^H1992 days ^H3117; [fn]visions ^H2377 were ^H6555 infrequent ^H369 H6555.

2 But it happened ^H1961 at that time ^H3117 as Eli ^H5941 was lying ^H7901 down ^H7901 in his place ^H4725 (now his eyesight ^H5869 had begun ^H2490 to be ^H3544 [fn]poor ^H3544 and he could ^H3201 not see ^H7200 well),

3 and the lamp ^H5216 of God ^H430 had not yet ^H2962 gone ^H3518 out ^H3518, and Samuel ^H8050 was lying ^H7901 down ^H7901 in the temple ^H1964 of the LORD ^H3068 where ^H834 H8033 the ark ^H727 of God ^H430 was, 4 that the LORD ^H3068 called ^H7121 Samuel ^H8050; and he said ^H559, “Here ^H2009 I am.” 5 Then he ran ^H7323 to Eli ^H5941 and said ^H559, “Here ^H2009 I am, for you called ^H7121 me.” But he said ^H559, “I did not call ^H7121, go ^H7725 back ^H7725 and lie ^H7901 down ^H7901.” So he went ^H1980 and lay ^H7901 down ^H7901. 6 And the LORD ^H3068 called ^H7121 yet ^H5750 again ^H3254, “Samuel ^H8050!” So Samuel ^H8050 got ^H6965 up ^H6965 and went ^H1980 to Eli ^H5941 and said ^H559, “Here ^H2009 I am, for you called ^H7121 me.” But he said ^H559, “I did not call ^H7121, my son ^H1121, go ^H7725 back ^H7725 and lie ^H7901 down ^H7901.” 7 Now Samuel ^H8050 did not yet ^H2962 know ^H3045 the LORD ^H3068, nor ^H2962 had the word ^H1697 of the LORD ^H3068 yet ^H2962 been revealed ^H1540 to him. 8 So the LORD ^H3068 called ^H7121 Samuel ^H8050 again ^H3254 for the third ^H7992 time ^H7992. And he got ^H6965 up ^H6965 and went ^H1980 to Eli ^H5941 and said ^H559, “Here ^H2009 I am, for you called ^H7121 me.” Then Eli ^H5941 realized ^H995 that the LORD ^H3068 was calling ^H7121 the boy ^H5288. 9 And Eli ^H5941 said ^H559 to Samuel ^H8050, “Go ^H1980 lie ^H7901 down ^H7901, and it shall be if ^H518 He calls ^H7121 you, that you shall say ^H559, ‘Speak ^H1696, LORD ^H3068, for Your servant ^H5650 is listening ^H8085.’” So Samuel ^H8050 went ^H1980 and lay ^H7901 down ^H7901 in his place ^H4725.

10 Then the LORD ^H3068 came ^H935 and stood ^H3320, and called ^H7121 as at the other ^H6471 times ^H6471: “Samuel ^H8050! Samuel ^H8050!” And Samuel ^H8050 said ^H559, “Speak ^H1696, for Your servant ^H5650 is listening ^H8085.” 11 Then the LORD ^H3068 said ^H559 to Samuel ^H8050, “Behold ^H2009, I am going to do ^H6213 a thing ^H1697 in Israel ^H3478, and both ^H8147 ears ^H241 of everyone ^H3605 who hears ^H8085 about it will ring ^H6750. 12 On that day ^H3117 I will carry ^H6965 out ^H6965 against ^H413 Eli ^H5941 everything ^H3605 that I have spoken ^H1696 in ^H413 regard ^H413 to his house ^H1004, from beginning ^H2490 to end ^H3615. 13 For I have told ^H5046 him that I am going to judge ^H8199 his house ^H1004 forever ^H5704 H5769 for the wrongdoing ^H5771 that he knew ^H3045, because ^H3588 his sons ^H1121 were bringing ^H7043 a ^H7043 curse ^H7043 on themselves ^H1992 and he did not rebuke ^H3543 them. 14 Therefore ^H3651 I have sworn ^H7650 to the house ^H1004 of Eli ^H5941 that the wrongdoing ^H5771 of Eli’s ^H5941 house ^H1004 shall never ^{H518 H5704 H5769} be atoned ^H3722 for by sacrifice ^H2077 or offering ^H4503.”

15 So Samuel ^H8050 lay ^H7901 down ^H7901 until ^H5704 morning ^H1242. Then he opened ^H6605 the doors ^H1817 of the house ^H1004 of the LORD ^H3068. But Samuel ^H8050 was ^H3372 afraid ^H3372 to tell ^H5046 the vision ^H4759 to Eli ^H5941. 16 Then Eli ^H5941 called ^H7121 Samuel ^H8050 and said ^H559, “Samuel ^H8050, my son ^H1121.” And he said ^H559, “Here ^H2009 I am.” 17 He said ^H559, “What ^H4100 is the word ^H1697 that He spoke ^H1696 to you? Please ^H4994 do not hide ^H3582 it from me. May God ^H430 do ^H6213 the same ^H3541 to you, and more ^H3254 so ^H3541, if ^H518 you hide ^H3582 a single word ^H1697 from me of all ^H3605 the words ^H1697 that He spoke ^H1696 to you!” 18 So Samuel ^H8050 told ^H5046 him [fn]everything ^H3605 and hid ^H3582 nothing ^H3808 from him. And he said ^H559, “He is the LORD ^H3068; let Him do ^H6213 [fn]what ^H2896 seems good ^H2896 to Him.”

19 Now Samuel ^H8050 grew ^H1431, and the LORD ^H3068 was with him, and He let none ^H3808 H3605 of his words ^H1697 [fn]fail ^H5307 H776. 20 And all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478 from Dan ^H1835 even to Beersheba ^H884 knew ^H3045 that Samuel ^H8050 was confirmed ^H539 as a prophet ^H5030 of the LORD ^H3068. 21 And the LORD ^H3068 appeared ^H7200 again ^H3254 at Shiloh ^H7887, because ^H3588 the LORD ^H3068 revealed ^H1540 Himself to Samuel ^H8050 at Shiloh ^H7887 by the word ^H1697 of the LORD ^H3068.
