Ammon and Aram Defeated
1 Now it happened H1961 afterward H310 H3651 that the king H4428 of the Ammonites H1121 H5983 died H4191, and his son H1121 Hanun H2586 became H4427 king H4427 in H8478 his place H8478.
2 Then David H1732 said H559, “I will show H6213 kindness H2617 to Hanun H2586 the son H1121 of Nahash H5176, just H834 as H834 his father H1 showed H6213 kindness H2617 to me.” So David H1732 sent H7971 [fn]some H3027 of his servants H5650 to console H5162 him about H413 his father H1. But when David’s H1732 servants H5650 came H935 to the land H776 of the Ammonites H1121 H5983, 3 the commanders H8269 of the Ammonites H1121 H5983 said H559 to their lord H113 Hanun H2586, “[fn]Do you think H5869 that David H1732 is simply honoring H3513 your father H1 since H3588 he has sent H7971 you servants [fn]to console H5162 you? Has David H1732 not sent H7971 his servants H5650 to you in order H5668 to explore H2713 the city H5892, to spy H7270 it out H7270 and overthrow H2015 it?” 4 So Hanun H2586 took H3947 David’s H1732 servants H5650 and shaved H1548 off H1548 half H2677 of their beards H2206, and cut H3772 off H3772 their robes H4063 in the middle H2677 as far H5704 as their buttocks H8351, and sent H7971 them away H7971. 5 When messengers informed H5046 David H1732, he sent H7971 servants to meet H7122 them, because H3588 the men H376 were extremely H3966 humiliated H3637. And the king H4428 said H559, “Stay H3427 in Jericho H3405 until H5704 your beards H2206 grow H6779 back, and then you shall return H7725.”
6 Now when the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 saw H7200 that they had become H887 repulsive H887 to David H1732, the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 sent H7971 messengers and hired H7936 the Arameans H758 of Beth-rehob H1050 and the Arameans H758 of Zobah H6678, twenty H6242 thousand H505 foot H7273 soldiers H7273, and the king H4428 of Maacah H4601 with a thousand H505 men H376, and the men H382 of H382 Tob H382 with twelve H8147 H6240 thousand H505 men H376. 7 When David H1732 heard H8085 about this, he sent H7971 Joab H3097 and all H3605 the army H6635, the warriors H1368. 8 And the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 came H3318 out H3318 and lined H6186 up H6186 for battle H4421 at the entrance H6607 of the [fn]city H8179, while the Arameans H758 of Zobah H6678 and of Rehob H7340 and the men H382 of H382 Tob H382 and Maacah H4601 were stationed by H905 themselves H905 in the field H7704.
9 Now when Joab H3097 saw H7200 that [fn]the battle H6440 H4421 was set against H413 him at the front H6440 and at the rear H268, he selected H977 warriors from all H3605 the choice H977 men H977 in Israel H3478, and lined H6186 them up H6186 against H7122 the Arameans H758. 10 But the remainder H3499 of the people H5971 he placed H5414 [fn]under the command H3027 of his brother H251 Abishai H52, and he lined H6186 them up H6186 against H7122 the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983. 11 And he said H559, “If H518 the Arameans H758 are too H4480 strong H2388 for me, then you shall help H3444 me; but if H518 the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 are too H4480 strong H2388 for you, then I will come H1980 to help H3467 you. 12 Be strong H2388, and let’s show H2388 ourselves courageous H2388 for the sake H1157 of our people H5971 and the cities H5892 of our God H430; and may the LORD H3068 do H6213 what H2896 is H2896 good H2896 in His sight H5869.” 13 So Joab H3097 and the people H5971 who H834 were with him advanced H5066 to the battle H4421 against the Arameans H758, and they fled H5127 from him. 14 When the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 saw H7200 that the Arameans H758 had fled H5127, they also fled H5127 from Abishai H52 and entered H935 the city H5892. Then Joab H3097 returned H7725 from fighting against H5921 the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 and came H935 to Jerusalem H3389.
15 When the Arameans H758 saw H7200 that they had been [fn]defeated H5062 by Israel H3478, they assembled H622 together H3162. 16 And Hadadezer H1909 sent H7971 word and brought H3318 out H3318 the Arameans H758 who H834 were beyond H4480 H5676 the Euphrates River H5104, and they came H935 to Helam H2431; and Shobach H7731 the commander H8269 of the army H6635 of Hadadezer H1909 [fn]led H6440 them. 17 Now when it was reported H5046 to David H1732, he gathered H622 all H3605 Israel H3478 together and crossed H5674 the Jordan H3383, and came H935 to Helam H2431. And the Arameans H758 lined H6186 up H6186 against H7122 David H1732 and fought H3898 him. 18 But the Arameans H758 fled H5127 from Israel H3478, and David H1732 killed H2026 seven H7651 hundred H3967 charioteers H7393 of the Arameans H758 and forty H705 thousand H505 horsemen H6571, and struck H5221 Shobach H7731 the commander H8269 of their army H6635, and he died H4191 there H8033. 19 When all H3605 the kings H4428, servants H5650 of Hadadezer H1909, saw H7200 that they had been [fn]defeated H5062 by Israel H3478, they made H7999 peace H7999 with Israel H3478 and served H5647 them. So the Arameans H758 were H3372 afraid H3372 to help H3467 the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 anymore H5750.
