Jacob’s Deception

1 Now it came ^H1961 about ^H1961, when ^H3588 Isaac ^H3327 was ^H2204 old ^H2204 and his eyes ^H5869 were too ^H4480 dim ^H3543 to see ^H7200, that he called ^H7121 his older ^H1419 son ^H1121 Esau ^H6215 and said ^H559 to him, “My son ^H1121.” And he said ^H559 to him, “Here ^H2009 I am.”

2 Then [fn]Isaac said ^H559, “Behold ^H2009 now ^H4994, I am ^H2204 old ^H2204 and I do not know ^H3045 the day ^H3117 of my death ^H4194. 3 Now ^H6258 then, please ^H4994 take ^H5375 your gear ^H3627, your quiver ^H8522 and your bow ^H7198, and go ^H3318 out ^H3318 to the field ^H7704 and hunt ^H6679 game ^H6718 for me; 4 and prepare ^H6213 a delicious ^H4303 meal ^H4303 for me such ^H834 as ^H834 I love ^H157, and bring ^H935 it to me that I may eat ^H398, so ^H5668 that ^H5668 my soul ^H5315 may bless ^H1288 you before ^H2962 I die ^H4191.”

5 Now Rebekah ^H7259 was listening ^H8085 while Isaac ^H3327 spoke ^H1696 to his son ^H1121 Esau ^H6215. So when Esau ^H6215 went ^H1980 to the field ^H7704 to hunt ^H6679 for game ^H6718 to bring ^H935 home, 6 Rebekah ^H7259 said ^H559 to her son ^H1121 Jacob ^H3290, “Behold ^H2009, I heard ^H8085 your father ^H1 speak ^H1696 to your brother ^H251 Esau ^H6215, saying ^H559, 7 ‘Bring ^H935 me some game ^H6718 and prepare ^H6213 a delicious ^H4303 meal ^H4303 for me, so that I may eat ^H398, and bless ^H1288 you in the presence ^H6440 of the LORD ^H3068 before ^H6440 my death ^H4194.’ 8 So now ^H6258, my son ^H1121, listen ^H8085 to [fn]me [fn]as I command ^H6680 you. 9 Go ^H1980 now ^H4994 to the flock ^H6629 and [fn]bring ^H3947 me two ^H8147 choice ^H2896 [fn]young ^H1423 H5795 goats ^H1423 H5795 from there ^H8033, so that I may prepare ^H6213 them as a delicious ^H4303 meal ^H4303 for your father ^H1, such ^H834 as ^H834 he loves ^H157. 10 Then you shall bring ^H935 it to your father ^H1, that he may eat ^H398, so ^H5668 H834 that ^H5668 H834 he may bless ^H1288 you before ^H6440 his death ^H4194.” 11 But Jacob ^H3290 said ^H559 to his mother ^H517 Rebekah ^H7259, “Behold ^H2005, my brother ^H251 Esau ^H6215 is a hairy ^H8163 man ^H376 and I am a smooth ^H2509 man ^H376. 12 Perhaps ^H194 my father ^H1 will touch ^H4959 me, then I will be like a [fn]deceiver ^H8591 in his sight ^H5869, and I will bring ^H935 upon myself a curse ^H7045 and not a blessing ^H1293.” 13 But his mother ^H517 said ^H559 to him, “Your curse ^H7045 be on me, my son ^H1121; only ^H389 obey ^H8085 my voice ^H6963, and go ^H1980, get ^H3947 the goats for me.” 14 So he went ^H1980 and got ^H3947 them, and brought ^H935 them to his mother ^H517; and his mother ^H517 made ^H6213 a delicious ^H4303 meal ^H4303 such ^H834 as ^H834 his father ^H1 loved ^H157. 15 Then Rebekah ^H7259 took ^H3947 the [fn]best ^H2532 garments ^H899 of her elder ^H1419 son ^H1121 Esau ^H6215, which ^H834 were with her in the house ^H1004, and put ^H3847 them on ^H3847 her younger ^H6996 son ^H1121 Jacob ^H3290. 16 And she put ^H3847 the skins ^H5785 of the [fn]young ^H1423 H5795 goats ^H1423 H5795 on his hands ^H3027 and on the smooth ^H2513 part ^H2513 of his neck ^H6677. 17 She also gave ^H5414 the delicious ^H4303 meal ^H4303 and the bread ^H3899 which ^H834 she had made ^H6213 [fn]to her son ^H1121 Jacob ^H3290.

18 Then he came ^H935 to his father ^H1 and said ^H559, “My father ^H1.” And he said ^H559, “Here ^H2009 I am. Who ^H4310 are you, my son ^H1121?” 19 Jacob ^H3290 said ^H559 to his father ^H1, “I am Esau ^H6215 your firstborn ^H1060; I have done ^H6213 as you told ^H1696 me. Come ^H6965 now ^H4994, sit ^H3427 and eat ^H398 of my game ^H6718, so ^H5668 that ^H5668 [fn]you may bless ^H1288 me.” 20 Isaac ^H3327 said ^H559 to his son ^H1121, “How ^H4100 is it that you have ^H4672 it so quickly ^H4116, my son ^H1121?” And he said ^H559, “Because ^H3588 the LORD ^H3068 your God ^H430 made ^H7136 it [fn]come ^H7136 to me.” 21 Then Isaac ^H3327 said ^H559 to Jacob ^H3290, “Please ^H4994 come ^H5066 close ^H5066, so that I may feel ^H4184 you, my son ^H1121, whether you are really ^H2088 my son ^H1121 Esau ^H6215 or ^H518 not.” 22 So Jacob ^H3290 came ^H5066 close ^H5066 to his father ^H1 Isaac ^H3327, and he touched ^H4959 him and said ^H559, “The voice ^H6963 is the voice ^H6963 of Jacob ^H3290, but the hands ^H3027 are the hands ^H3027 of Esau ^H6215.” 23 And he did not recognize ^H5234 him, because ^H3588 his hands ^H3027 were hairy ^H8163 like his brother ^H251 Esau’s ^H6215 hands ^H3027; so he blessed ^H1288 him. 24 And he said ^H559, “Are you really ^H2088 my son ^H1121 Esau ^H6215?” And he said ^H559, “I am.” 25 So he said ^H559, “Bring ^H5066 it to me, and I will eat ^H398 of my son’s ^H1121 game ^H6718, that [fn]I may bless ^H1288 you.” And he brought ^H5066 it to him, and he ate ^H398; he also brought ^H935 him wine ^H3196 and he drank ^H8354. 26 Then his father ^H1 Isaac ^H3327 said ^H559 to him, “Please ^H4994 come ^H5066 close ^H5066 and kiss ^H5401 me, my son ^H1121.” 27 So he came ^H5066 close ^H5066 and kissed ^H5401 him; and when he smelled ^H7306 the smell ^H7381 of his garments ^H899, he blessed ^H1288 him and said ^H559,

“See ^H7200, the smell ^H7381 of my son ^H1121

Is like the smell ^H7381 of a field ^H7704 which ^H834 the LORD ^H3068 has blessed ^H1288;

28 Now may God ^H430 give ^H5414 you of the dew ^H2919 of heaven ^H8064,

And of the fatness ^H8082 of the earth ^H776,

And an abundance ^H7230 of grain ^H1715 and new ^H8492 wine ^H8492;

29 May peoples ^H5971 serve ^H5647 you,

And nations ^H3816 bow ^H2331 down ^H2331 to you;

Be master ^H1376 of your brothers ^H251,

And may your mother’s ^H517 sons ^H1121 bow ^H2331 down ^H2331 to you.

Cursed ^H779 be those who curse ^H779 you,

And blessed ^H1288 be those who bless ^H1288 you.”

The Stolen Blessing

30 Now it came ^H1961 about ^H1961, as ^H834 soon ^H834 as ^H834 Isaac ^H3327 had finished ^H3615 blessing ^H1288 Jacob ^H3290, and Jacob ^H3290 had hardly ^H389 H3318 gone ^H3318 out ^H3318 from the presence ^H6440 of his father ^H1 Isaac ^H3327, that his brother ^H251 Esau ^H6215 came ^H935 in ^H935 from his hunting ^H6718.

31 Then he also ^H1571 made ^H6213 a delicious ^H4303 meal ^H4303, and brought ^H935 it to his father ^H1; and he said ^H559 to his father ^H1, “Let my father ^H1 arise ^H6965 and eat ^H398 of his son’s ^H1121 game ^H6718, that [fn]you may bless ^H1288 me.” 32 His father ^H1 Isaac ^H3327 said ^H559 to him, “Who ^H4310 are you?” And he said ^H559, “I am your son ^H1121, your firstborn ^H1060, Esau ^H6215.” 33 Then Isaac ^H3327 [fn]trembled ^H2729 violently ^{H2731 H1419 H5704 H3966}, and said ^H559, “Who ^H4310 then ^H645 was he who hunted ^H6679 game ^H6718 and brought ^H935 it to me, so that I ate ^H398 from all ^H3605 of it before ^H2962 you came ^H935, and blessed ^H1288 him? Yes ^H1571, and he shall be blessed ^H1288.” 34 When Esau ^H6215 heard ^H8085 the words ^H1697 of his father ^H1, he cried ^H6817 out ^H6817 with an exceedingly ^H3966 great ^H1419 and bitter ^H4751 cry ^H6818, and said ^H559 to his father ^H1, “Bless ^H1288 me, me as ^H1571 well ^H1571, my father ^H1!” 35 And he said ^H559, “Your brother ^H251 came ^H935 deceitfully ^H4820 and has taken ^H3947 away your blessing ^H1293.” 36 Then Esau said ^H559, “[fn]Is he not rightly named ^H7121 H8034 [fn]Jacob ^H3290, for he has betrayed ^H6117 me these ^H2088 two ^H6471 times ^H6471? He took ^H3947 away my birthright ^H1062, and behold ^H2009, now ^H6258 he has taken ^H3947 away my blessing ^H1293.” And he said ^H559, “Have you not reserved ^H680 a blessing ^H1293 for me?” 37 But Isaac ^H3327 replied ^H6030 to Esau ^H6215, “Behold ^H2005, I have made ^H7760 him your master ^H1376, and I have given ^H5414 to him all ^H3605 his relatives ^H251 [fn]as servants ^H5650; and with grain ^H1715 and new ^H8492 wine ^H8492 I have sustained ^H5564 him. What ^H4100 then ^H645 can I do ^H6213 for you, my son ^H1121?” 38 Esau ^H6215 said ^H559 to his father ^H1, “Do you have only one ^H259 blessing ^H1293, my father ^H1? Bless ^H1288 me, me as ^H1571 well ^H1571, my father ^H1.” So Esau ^H6215 raised ^H5375 his voice ^H6963 and wept ^H1058.

39 Then his father ^H1 Isaac ^H3327 answered ^H6030 and said ^H559 to him,

“Behold ^H2009, [fn]away from the [fn]fertility ^H8082 of the earth ^H776 shall be your dwelling ^H4186,

And [fn]away from the dew ^H2919 of heaven ^H8064 from above ^H5921.

40 “And by your sword ^H2719 you shall live ^H2421,

And you shall serve ^H5647 your brother ^H251;

But it shall come ^H1961 about ^H1961 when ^H834 you become ^H7300 restless ^H7300,

That you will [fn]break ^H6561 his yoke ^H5923 from your neck ^H6677.”

41 So Esau ^H6215 held ^H7852 a ^H7852 grudge ^H7852 against ^H7852 Jacob ^H3290 because ^H5921 of the blessing ^H1293 with which ^H834 his father ^H1 had blessed ^H1288 him; and Esau ^H6215 said ^H559 [fn]to himself ^H3820, “The days ^H3117 of mourning ^H60 for my father ^H1 are near ^H7126; then I will kill ^H2026 my brother ^H251 Jacob ^H3290.” 42 Now when the words ^H1697 of her elder ^H1419 son ^H1121 Esau ^H6215 were reported ^H5046 to Rebekah ^H7259, she sent ^H7971 word and called ^H7121 her younger ^H6996 son ^H1121 Jacob ^H3290, and said ^H559 to him, “Behold ^H2009 your brother ^H251 Esau ^H6215 is consoling ^H5162 himself concerning you by planning to kill ^H2026 you. 43 Now ^H6258 then, my son ^H1121, obey ^H8085 my voice ^H6963, and arise ^H6965, [fn]flee ^H1272 to Haran ^H2771, to my brother ^H251 Laban ^H3837! 44 Stay ^H3427 with him a few ^H259 days ^H3117, until ^H5704 H834 your brother’s ^H251 fury ^H2534 [fn]subsides ^H7725, 45 until ^H5704 your brother’s ^H251 anger ^H639 [fn]against ^H4480 you subsides ^H7725 and he forgets ^H7911 what ^H834 you did ^H6213 to him. Then I will send ^H7971 word and get ^H3947 you from there ^H8033. Why ^H4100 should I lose ^H7921 you both ^H8147 in one ^H259 day ^H3117?”

46 And Rebekah ^H7259 said ^H559 to Isaac ^H3327, “I am tired ^H6973 of [fn]living ^H2416 because ^H4480 H6440 of the daughters ^H1323 of Heth ^H2845; if ^H518 Jacob ^H3290 takes ^H3947 a wife ^H802 from the daughters ^H1323 of Heth ^H2845 like these ^H428 from the daughters ^H1323 of the land ^H776, what ^H4100 good will my life ^H2416 be to me?”
