Jacob Meets Esau

1 Then Jacob ^H3290 raised ^H5375 his eyes ^H5869 and looked ^H7200, and behold ^H2009, Esau ^H6215 was coming ^H935, and four ^H702 hundred ^H3967 men ^H376 with him. So he divided ^H2673 the children ^H3206 [fn]among ^H5921 Leah ^H3812 and Rachel ^H7354, and the two ^H8147 slave ^H8198 women ^H8198.

2 He put ^H7760 the slave ^H8198 women ^H8198 and their children ^H3206 [fn]in ^H7223 front ^H7223, and Leah ^H3812 and her children ^H3206 [fn]next ^H314, and Rachel ^H7354 and Joseph ^H3130 [fn]last ^H314. 3 But he himself ^H1931 passed ^H5674 on ^H5674 ahead ^H6440 of them and bowed ^H2331 down ^H2331 to the ground ^H776 seven ^H7651 times ^H6471, until ^H5704 he came ^H5066 near ^H5066 to his brother ^H251.

4 Then Esau ^H6215 ran ^H7323 to meet ^H7122 him and embraced ^H2263 him, and fell ^H5307 on his neck ^H6677 and kissed ^H5401 him, and they wept ^H1058. 5 He raised ^H5375 his eyes ^H5869 and saw ^H7200 the women ^H802 and the children ^H3206, and said ^H559, “[fn]Who ^H4310 are these ^H428 with you?” So he said ^H559, “The children ^H3206 whom ^H834 God ^H430 has graciously ^H2603 given ^H2603 your servant ^H5650.” 6 Then the slave ^H8198 women ^H8198 came ^H5066 forward ^H5066 [fn]with their children ^H3206, and they bowed ^H2331 down ^H2331. 7 And Leah ^H3812 likewise ^H1571 came ^H5066 forward ^H5066 with her children ^H3206, and they bowed ^H2331 down ^H2331; and afterward ^H310 Joseph ^H3130 came ^H5066 forward ^H5066 with Rachel ^H7354, and they bowed ^H2331 down ^H2331. 8 And he said ^H559, “What ^H4310 do you mean by all ^H3605 this ^H2088 company ^H4264 which ^H834 I have met ^H6298?” And he said ^H559, “To find ^H4672 favor ^H2580 in the sight ^H5869 of my lord ^H113.” 9 But Esau ^H6215 said ^H559, “I have ^H3426 plenty ^H7227, my brother ^H251; let what ^H834 you have ^H1961 be your own.” 10 Jacob ^H3290 said ^H559, “No ^H408, please ^H4994, if ^H518 now ^H4994 I have found ^H4672 favor ^H2580 in your sight ^H5869, then accept ^H3947 my gift ^H4503 from my hand ^H3027, [fn]for I see ^H7200 your face ^H6440 as one sees ^H7200 the face ^H6440 of God ^H430, and you have received ^H7521 me favorably ^H7521. 11 Please ^H4994 accept ^H3947 my [fn]gift ^H1293 which ^H834 has been brought ^H935 to you, because ^H3588 God ^H430 has dealt ^H2603 graciously ^H2603 with me and because ^H3588 I have ^H3426 [fn]plenty ^H3605.” So he urged ^H6484 him, and he accepted ^H3947 it.

12 Then [fn]Esau said ^H559, “Let’s journey ^H5265 on ^H5265 and go ^H1980, and I will go ^H1980 ahead ^H5048 of you.” 13 But he said ^H559 to him, “My lord ^H113 knows ^H3045 that the children ^H3206 are frail ^H7390 and that the flocks ^H6629 and herds ^H1241 that are nursing ^H5763 are [fn]a matter ^H5921 of ^H5921 concern ^H5921 to me. And if they are driven ^H1849 hard ^H1849 just one ^H259 day ^H3117, all ^H3605 the flocks ^H6629 will die ^H4191. 14 Please ^H4994 let my lord ^H113 pass ^H5674 on ^H5674 ahead ^H6440 of his servant ^H5650, and I will proceed ^H5095 at my leisure ^H328, at the pace ^H7272 of the cattle ^H4399 that are ahead ^H6440 of me and at the pace ^H7272 of the children ^H3206, until ^H5704 H834 I come ^H935 to my lord ^H113 at Seir ^H8165.”

15 Then Esau ^H6215 said ^H559, “Please ^H4994 let me leave ^H3322 with you some ^H4480 of the people ^H5971 who ^H834 are with me.” But he said ^H559, “[fn]What ^H4100 need is there? Let me find ^H4672 favor ^H2580 in the sight ^H5869 of my lord ^H113.” 16 So Esau ^H6215 returned ^H7725 that day ^H3117 on his way ^H1870 to Seir ^H8165. 17 But Jacob ^H3290 journeyed ^H5265 to [fn]Succoth ^H5523, and built ^H1129 for himself a house ^H1004 and made ^H6213 booths ^H5521 for his livestock ^H4735; therefore ^H5921 H3651 the place ^H4725 is named ^H7121 H8034 Succoth ^H5523.

Jacob Settles in Shechem

18 Now Jacob ^H3290 came ^H935 safely ^H8003 to the city ^H5892 of Shechem ^H7927, which ^H834 is in the land ^H776 of Canaan ^H3667, when he came ^H935 from Paddan-aram ^H6307, and camped ^H2583 before ^H6440 the city ^H5892.

19 He bought ^H7069 the plot ^H2513 of land ^H7704 where ^H834 H8033 he had pitched ^H5186 his tent ^H168 from the hand ^H3027 of the sons ^H1121 of Hamor ^H2544, Shechem’s ^H7927 father ^H1, for a hundred ^H3967 [fn]pieces ^H7192 of ^H7192 money ^H7192. 20 Then he erected ^H5324 there ^H8033 an altar ^H4196 and called ^H7121 it [fn]El-Elohe-Israel ^H415.
