The Broken Covenant

1 The word ^H1697 that ^H834 came ^H1961 to Jeremiah ^H3414 from the LORD ^H3068, saying ^H559,

2 “Hear ^H8085 the words ^H1697 of this ^H2088 covenant ^H1285, and speak ^H1696 to the men ^H376 of Judah ^H3063 and to the inhabitants ^H3427 of Jerusalem ^H3389; 3 and say ^H559 to them, ‘This ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478 says ^H559: “Cursed ^H779 is the one ^H376 who ^H834 does not obey ^H8085 the words ^H1697 of this ^H2088 covenant ^H1285 4 which ^H834 I commanded ^H6680 your forefathers ^H1 on the day ^H3117 that I brought ^H3318 them out ^H3318 of the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714, from the iron ^H1270 furnace ^H3564, saying ^H559, ‘Listen ^H8085 to My voice ^H6963, and [fn]do ^H6213 according to all ^H3605 that I command ^H6680 you; so you shall be My people ^H5971, and I will be your God ^H430,’ 5 in ^H4616 order ^H4616 to ^H4616 confirm ^H6965 the oath ^H7621 which ^H834 I swore ^H7650 to your forefathers ^H1, to give ^H5414 them a land ^H776 flowing ^H2100 with milk ^H2461 and honey ^H1706, as it is this ^H2088 day ^H3117.”’” Then I replied ^H6030 H559, “Amen ^H543, LORD ^H3068.”

6 And the LORD ^H3068 said ^H559 to me, “Proclaim ^H7121 all ^H3605 these ^H428 words ^H1697 in the cities ^H5892 of Judah ^H3063 and in the streets ^H2351 of Jerusalem ^H3389, saying ^H559, ‘Hear ^H8085 the words ^H1697 of this ^H2088 covenant ^H1285 and do ^H6213 them. 7 For I solemnly ^H5749 warned ^H5749 your fathers ^H1 on the day ^H3117 I brought ^H5927 them up ^H5927 from the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714, even to this ^H2088 day ^H3117, warning ^H5749 them persistently ^H7925, saying ^H559, “Listen ^H8085 to My voice ^H6963.” 8 Yet they did ^H6213 not obey ^H8085 or incline ^H5186 their ear ^H241, but walked ^H1980 in the stubbornness ^H8307 of their evil ^H7451 heart ^H3820, each ^H376 one ^H376 of them; therefore I brought ^H935 on them all ^H3605 the words ^H1697 of this ^H2088 covenant ^H1285 which ^H834 I commanded ^H6680 them to do ^H6213, but they did ^H6213 not.’”

9 Then the LORD ^H3068 said ^H559 to me, “A conspiracy ^H7195 has been found ^H4672 among the men ^H376 of Judah ^H3063 and among the inhabitants ^H3427 of Jerusalem ^H3389. 10 They have turned ^H7725 back ^H7725 to the wrongdoings ^H5771 of their [fn]ancestors ^H7223 who ^H834 refused ^H3985 to hear ^H8085 My words ^H1697, and they have followed ^H1980 H310 other ^H312 gods ^H430 to serve ^H5647 them. The house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478 and the house ^H1004 of Judah ^H3063 have broken ^H6565 My covenant ^H1285 which ^H834 I made ^H3772 with their fathers ^H1.” 11 Therefore ^H3651 this ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 says ^H559: “Behold ^H2009, I am bringing ^H935 disaster ^H7451 on them which ^H834 they will not be ^H3201 able ^H3201 to escape ^H3318 H4480; though they will cry ^H2199 out ^H2199 to Me, I will not listen ^H8085 to them. 12 Then the cities ^H5892 of Judah ^H3063 and the inhabitants ^H3427 of Jerusalem ^H3389 will go ^H1980 and cry ^H2199 out ^H2199 to the gods ^H430 to whom ^H834 they [fn]burn ^H6999 incense ^H6999, but they certainly ^H3467 will not save ^H3467 them in the time ^H6256 of their disaster ^H7451. 13 For your gods ^H430 are [fn]as many ^H4557 as your cities ^H5892, Judah ^H3063; and [fn]as many ^H4557 as the streets ^H2351 of Jerusalem ^H3389 are the altars ^H4196 you have set ^H7760 up ^H7760 to the shameful ^H1322 thing ^H1322, altars ^H4196 for [fn]burning ^H6999 incense ^H6999 to Baal ^H1168.

14 “So as for you, do not pray ^H6419 for this ^H2088 people ^H5971, nor ^H408 lift ^H5375 up ^H5375 a cry ^H7440 or prayer ^H8605 for them; for I will not listen ^H8085 when ^H6256 they call ^H7121 to Me because ^H1157 of their disaster ^H7451.

15 “What ^H4100 right has My beloved ^H3039 in My house ^H1004

When ^H3588 she has carried ^H6213 out ^H6213 many ^H7227 evil ^H4209 schemes ^H4209?

Can the sacrificial ^H6944 flesh ^H1320 take ^H5674 away ^H5674 from you your disaster ^H7451,

[fn]So ^H227 that you can rejoice ^H5937?”

16 The LORD ^H3068 named ^H7121 H8034 you

“A green ^H7488 olive ^H2132 tree ^H2132, beautiful ^H3303 in fruit ^H6529 and form ^H8389”;

With the noise ^H6963 of a great ^H1419 [fn]tumult ^H1999

He has set ^H3341 fire ^H784 to it,

And its branches ^H1808 are worthless ^H7489.

17 The LORD ^H3068 of armies ^H6635, who planted ^H5193 you, has pronounced ^H1696 evil ^H7451 against ^H5921 you because ^H1558 of the evil ^H7451 of the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478 and the house ^H1004 of Judah ^H3063, which ^H834 they have [fn]done ^H6213 to provoke ^H3707 Me by [fn]offering ^H6999 sacrifices ^H6999 to Baal ^H1168.

Plots against Jeremiah

18 Moreover, the LORD ^H3068 made ^H3045 it known ^H3045 to me and I knew ^H3045 it;

Then ^H227 You showed ^H7200 me their deeds ^H4611.

19 But I was like a gentle ^H441 lamb ^H3532 led ^H2986 to the slaughter ^H2873;

And I did not know ^H3045 that they had devised ^H2803 plots ^H4284 against ^H5921 me, saying,

“Let’s destroy ^H7843 the tree ^H6086 with its [fn]fruit ^H3899,

And let’s cut ^H3772 him off ^H3772 from the land ^H776 of the living ^H2416,

So that his name ^H8034 will no ^H3808 longer ^H5750 be remembered ^H2142.”

20 But, LORD ^H3068 of armies ^H6635, who judges ^H8199 righteously ^H6664,

Who puts ^H974 the [fn]feelings ^H3629 and the heart ^H3820 to ^H974 the ^H974 test ^H974,

Let me see ^H7200 Your vengeance ^H5360 on them,

For to You I have [fn]committed ^H1556 my cause ^H7379.

21 Therefore ^H3651 this ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 says ^H559 concerning ^H5921 the people ^H376 of Anathoth ^H6068, who are seeking ^H1245 your life ^H5315, saying ^H559: “Do not prophesy ^H5012 in the name ^H8034 of the LORD ^H3068, so that you do not die ^H4191 by our hand ^H3027”;

22 therefore ^H3651, this ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 of armies ^H6635 says ^H559: “Behold ^H2009, I am going to punish ^H6485 them! The young ^H970 men ^H970 will die ^H4191 by the sword ^H2719, their sons ^H1121 and daughters ^H1323 will die ^H4191 by famine ^H7458; 23 and a remnant ^H7611 will not be left to them, because ^H3588 I will bring ^H935 disaster ^H7451 on the people ^H376 of Anathoth ^H6068—the year ^H8141 of their punishment ^H6486.”
