Grief over Zion

1 [fn]Oh ^H4310 H5414, that my head ^H7218 were waters ^H4325

And my eyes ^H5869 a fountain ^H4726 of tears ^H1832,

That I might weep ^H1058 day ^H3119 and night ^H3915

For those slain ^H2491 of the daughter ^H1323 of my people ^H5971!

2 [fn]Oh ^H4310 that I had ^H5414 in the desert ^H4057

A travelers’ ^H732 lodging ^H4411 place ^H4411;

So that I might leave ^H5800 my people ^H5971

And go ^H1980 away ^H4480 from them!

For all ^H3605 of them are adulterers ^H5003,

An assembly ^H6116 of treacherous ^H898 people ^H898.

3 “They bend ^H1869 their tongues ^H3956 like their bows ^H7198;

Lies ^H8267 and not truth ^H530 prevail ^H1396 in the land ^H776;

For they proceed ^H3318 from evil ^H7451 to evil ^H7451,

And they do not know ^H3045 Me,” declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068.

4 “Let everyone ^H376 be on guard ^H8104 against ^H4480 his neighbor ^H7453,

And do not trust ^H982 any ^H3605 brother ^H251;

Because ^H3588 every ^H3605 brother ^H251 utterly ^H6117 [fn]betrays ^H6117,

And every ^H3605 neighbor ^H7453 goes ^H1980 about ^H1980 as a slanderer ^H7400.

5 “Everyone ^H376 deceives ^H8524 his neighbor ^H7453

And does not speak ^H1696 the truth ^H571.

They have taught ^H3925 their tongue ^H3956 to speak ^H1696 lies ^H8267;

They weary ^H3811 themselves committing ^H5753 wrongdoing ^H5753.

6 “Your dwelling ^H3427 is in the midst ^H8432 of deceit ^H4820;

Through deceit ^H4820 they refuse ^H3985 to know ^H3045 Me,” declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068.

7 Therefore ^H3651 this ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 of armies ^H6635 says ^H559:

“Behold ^H2009, I will refine ^H6884 them and put ^H974 them to ^H974 the ^H974 test ^H974;

For what ^H349 else can I do ^H6213, because ^H4480 H6440 of the daughter ^H1323 of My people ^H5971?

8 “Their tongue ^H3956 is a deadly ^H7819 arrow ^H2671;

It speaks ^H1696 deceit ^H4820;

With his mouth ^H6310 one speaks ^H1696 peace ^H7965 to his neighbor ^H7453,

But inwardly ^H7130 he sets ^H7760 an ambush ^H696 for him.

9 “Shall I not punish ^H6485 them for these ^H428 things ^H428?” declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068.

“Shall I not avenge ^H5358 Myself ^H5315

On a nation ^H1471 such ^H834 as this ^H2088?

10 “I will take ^H5375 up ^H5375 a weeping ^H1065 and wailing ^H5092 for the mountains ^H2022,

And for the pastures ^H4999 of the wilderness ^H4057 a song ^H7015 of ^H7015 mourning ^H7015,

Because ^H3588 they are laid ^H5327 waste ^H5327 so ^H4480 H1097 that no ^H1097 one ^H376 passes ^H5674 through ^H5674,

And the sound ^H6963 of the livestock ^H4735 is not heard ^H8085;

Both ^H4480 the birds ^H5775 of the sky ^H8064 and the animals ^H929 have fled ^H5074; they are gone ^H1980.

11 “I will make ^H5414 Jerusalem ^H3389 a heap ^H1530 of ruins,

A haunt ^H4583 of jackals ^H8565;

And I will make ^H5414 the cities ^H5892 of Judah ^H3063 a desolation ^H8077 without ^H1097 inhabitant ^H3427.”

12 Who ^H4310 is the wise ^H2450 person ^H376 who may understand ^H995 this ^H2088? And who is he to whom ^H834 the mouth ^H6310 of the LORD ^H3068 has spoken ^H1696, that he may declare ^H5046 it? Why ^H5921 H4100 is the land ^H776 destroyed ^H6, laid ^H5327 waste ^H5327 like the desert ^H4057, so ^H4480 H1097 that no ^H1097 one ^H1097 passes ^H5674 through ^H5674?

13 The LORD ^H3068 said ^H559, “Because ^H5921 they have abandoned ^H5800 My Law ^H8451 which ^H834 I put ^H5414 before ^H6440 them, and have not obeyed ^H8085 My voice ^H6963 nor ^H3808 walked ^H1980 according to it, 14 but have followed ^H1980 H310 the stubbornness ^H8307 of their heart ^H3820 and the Baals ^H1168, [fn]as their fathers ^H1 taught ^H3925 them,” 15 therefore ^H3651 this ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 of armies ^H6635, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478 says ^H559: “Behold ^H2009, I will feed ^H398 this ^H2088 people ^H5971 wormwood ^H3939; and I will give ^H8248 them poisoned ^H7219 water ^H4325 to ^H8248 drink ^H8248. 16 I will also scatter ^H6327 them among the nations ^H1471, whom ^H834 neither ^H3808 they nor ^H3808 their fathers ^H1 have known ^H3045; and I will send ^H7971 the sword ^H2719 after ^H310 them until ^H5704 I have put ^H3615 an ^H3615 end ^H3615 to ^H3615 them.”

17 This ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 of armies ^H6635 says ^H559:

“Consider ^H995 and call ^H7121 for the mourning ^H6969 women ^H6969, that they may come ^H935;

And send ^H7971 for the [fn]skillful ^H2450 women ^H2450, that they may come ^H935!

18 “Have them hurry ^H4116 and take ^H5375 up ^H5375 a wailing ^H5092 for us,

So that our eyes ^H5869 may shed ^H3381 tears ^H1832,

And our eyelids ^H6079 flow ^H5140 with water ^H4325.

19 “For a voice ^H6963 of wailing ^H5092 is heard ^H8085 from Zion ^H6726:

‘How ^H349 devastated ^H7703 we are!

We are put ^H954 to ^H954 great ^H3966 shame ^H954,

For we have abandoned ^H5800 the land ^H776

Because ^H3588 they have torn ^H7993 down ^H7993 our homes ^H4908.’”

20 Now ^H3588 hear ^H8085 the word ^H1697 of the LORD ^H3068, you women ^H802,

And let your ears ^H241 receive ^H3947 the word ^H1697 of His mouth ^H6310;

Teach ^H3925 your daughters ^H1323 wailing ^H5092,

And have every woman ^H802 teach her neighbor ^H7468 a song ^H7015 of ^H7015 mourning ^H7015.

21 For death ^H4194 has come ^H5927 up ^H5927 through our windows ^H2474;

It has entered ^H935 our palaces ^H759

To eliminate ^H3772 the children ^H5768 from the streets ^H2351,

The young ^H970 men ^H970 from the public ^H7339 squares ^H7339.

22 Speak ^H1696, “This ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 says ^H5002:

‘The corpses ^H5038 of people ^H120 will fall ^H5307 like dung ^H1828 on the open ^H6440 field ^H7704,

And like the sheaf ^H5995 after ^H4480 H310 the reaper ^H7114,

But no ^H369 one ^H369 will gather ^H622 them.’”

23 This ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 says ^H559: “Let no ^H408 wise ^H2450 man ^H2450 boast ^H1984 of his wisdom ^H2451, nor ^H408 let the mighty ^H1368 man ^H1368 boast ^H1984 of his might ^H1369, nor ^H408 a rich ^H6223 man ^H6223 boast ^H1984 of his riches ^H6239; 24 but let the one who boasts ^H1984 boast ^H1984 of this ^H2088, that he understands ^H7919 and knows ^H3045 Me, that I am the LORD ^H3068 who exercises ^H6213 [fn]mercy ^H2617, justice ^H4941, and righteousness ^H6666 on the earth ^H776; for I delight ^H2654 in these ^H428 things ^H428,” declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068.

25 “Behold ^H2009, the days ^H3117 are coming ^H935,” declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068, “that I will punish ^H6485 all ^H3605 who are circumcised ^H4135 and yet uncircumcised ^H6190— 26 Egypt ^H4714, Judah ^H3063, Edom ^H123, the sons ^H1121 of Ammon ^H5983, Moab ^H4124, and all ^H3605 those inhabiting ^H3427 the desert ^H4057 who trim ^H7112 the hair on their temples ^H6285; for all ^H3605 the nations ^H1471 are uncircumcised ^H6189, and all ^H3605 the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478 are uncircumcised ^H6189 of heart ^H3820.”
