God’s Indictment of His People

1 Hear ^H8085 now ^H4994 what ^H834 the LORD ^H3068 is saying ^H559,

“Arise ^H6965, plead ^H7378 your case ^H7378 [fn]before ^H854 the mountains ^H2022,

And let the hills ^H1389 hear ^H8085 your voice ^H6963.

2 “Listen ^H8085, you mountains ^H2022, to the indictment ^H7379 by the LORD ^H3068,

And you enduring ^H386 foundations ^H4144 of the earth ^H776,

Because ^H3588 the LORD ^H3068 has a case ^H7379 against ^H5973 His people ^H5971;

And He will dispute ^H3198 with Israel ^H3478.

3 “My people ^H5971, what ^H4100 have I done ^H6213 to you,

And how ^H4100 have I wearied ^H3811 you? Answer ^H6030 Me.

4 “Indeed ^H3588, I brought ^H5927 you up ^H5927 from the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714,

I redeemed ^H6299 you from the house ^H1004 of slavery ^H5650,

And I sent ^H7971 before ^H6440 you Moses ^H4872, Aaron ^H175, and Miriam ^H4813.

5 “My people ^H5971, remember ^H2142 now ^H4994

What ^H4100 Balak ^H1111 king ^H4428 of Moab ^H4124 planned ^H3289

And what ^H4100 Balaam ^H1109 son ^H1121 of Beor ^H1160 answered ^H6030 him,

And what happened from Shittim ^H7851 to Gilgal ^H1537,

[fn]So ^H4616 that ^H4616 you might know ^H3045 the righteous ^H6666 acts ^H6666 of the LORD ^H3068.”

What God Requires of Mankind

6 With what ^H4100 shall I come ^H6923 to ^H6923 the LORD ^H3068

And bow ^H3721 myself before the God ^H430 on high ^H4791?

Shall I come ^H6923 to ^H6923 Him with burnt ^H5930 offerings ^H5930,

With yearling ^H8141 calves ^H5695?

7 Does the LORD ^H3068 take ^H7521 pleasure ^H7521 in thousands ^H505 of rams ^H352,

In ten ^H7233 thousand ^H7233 rivers ^H5158 of [fn]oil ^H8081?

Shall I give ^H5414 Him my firstborn ^H1060 for my wrongdoings ^H6588,

The fruit ^H6529 of my body ^H990 for the sin ^H2403 of my soul ^H5315?

8 He has told ^H5046 you, mortal ^H120 one ^H120, what ^H4100 is good ^H2896;

And what ^H4100 does the LORD ^H3068 require ^H1875 of you

But to do ^H6213 justice ^H4941, to love ^H157 [fn]kindness ^H2617,

And to walk ^H1980 [fn]humbly ^H6800 with your God ^H430?

9 The voice ^H6963 of the LORD ^H3068 will call ^H7121 to the city ^H5892—

And it is sound ^H8454 wisdom ^H8454 to fear ^H3372 Your name ^H8034:

“[fn]Hear ^H8085, you tribe ^H4294. Who ^H4310 has designated ^H3259 [fn]its time?

10 “Is there still ^H5750 a person ^H376 in the wicked ^H7563 house ^H1004,

Along with treasures ^H214 of wickedness ^H7562,

And a [fn]short ^H7332 measure ^H374 that is cursed ^H2194?

11 “Can I justify ^H2135 dishonest ^H7562 balances ^H3976,

And a bag ^H3599 of fraudulent ^H4820 weights ^H68?

12 “For the rich ^H6223 people ^H6223 of [fn]the city are full ^H4390 of violence ^H2555,

Her residents ^H3427 speak ^H1696 lies ^H8267,

And their tongue ^H3956 is deceitful ^H7423 in their mouth ^H6310.

13 “So also ^H1571 I will make ^H2470 you sick ^H2470, striking ^H5221 you down,

Making ^H8074 you desolate ^H8074 because ^H5921 of your sins ^H2403.

14 “You will eat ^H398, but you will not be ^H7646 satisfied ^H7646,

And your filth ^H3445 will be in your midst ^H7130.

You will try to remove ^H5472 valuables for safekeeping,

But you will not save ^H6403 it all,

And what ^H834 you do save ^H6403 I will turn ^H5414 over ^H5414 to the sword ^H2719.

15 “You will sow ^H2232 but you will not harvest ^H7114.

You will tread ^H1869 the olive ^H2132 press but will not anoint ^H5480 yourself with oil ^H8081;

And tread out sweet ^H8492 wine ^H8492, but you will not drink ^H8354 any wine ^H3196.

16 “The statutes ^H2708 of Omri ^H6018

And every ^H3605 work ^H4639 of the house ^H1004 of Ahab ^H256 are maintained ^H8104,

And you walk ^H1980 by their plans ^H4156.

Therefore ^H4616 I will give ^H5414 you up ^H5414 for destruction ^H8047,

And [fn]your inhabitants ^H3427 for [fn]derision ^H8322,

And you will suffer ^H5375 the taunting ^H2781 of My people ^H5971.”
