Reuben and Gad Settle in Gilead

1 Now the sons ^H1121 of Reuben ^H7205 and the sons ^H1121 of Gad ^H1410 had ^H1961 a very ^H3966 large ^H6099 number ^H6099 of livestock ^H4735. So when they saw ^H7200 the land ^H776 of Jazer ^H3270 and the land ^H776 of Gilead ^H1568, that [fn]it was indeed ^H2009 a place ^H4725 suitable ^H4725 for livestock ^H4735,

2 the sons ^H1121 of Gad ^H1410 and the sons ^H1121 of Reuben ^H7205 came ^H935 and spoke ^H559 to Moses ^H4872, Eleazar ^H499 the priest ^H3548, and to the leaders ^H5387 of the congregation ^H5712, saying ^H559, 3 “Ataroth ^H5852, Dibon ^H1769, Jazer ^H3270, Nimrah ^H5247, Heshbon ^H2809, Elealeh ^H500, Sebam ^H7643, Nebo ^H5015, and Beon ^H1194, 4 the land ^H776 which ^H834 the LORD ^H3068 [fn]conquered ^H5221 before ^H6440 the congregation ^H5712 of Israel ^H3478, is a land ^H776 for livestock ^H4735, and your servants ^H5650 have livestock ^H4735.” 5 And they said ^H559, “If ^H518 we have found ^H4672 favor ^H2580 in your sight ^H5869, let this ^H2088 land ^H776 be given ^H5414 to your servants ^H5650 as our property ^H272; do not take ^H5674 us across ^H5674 the Jordan ^H3383.”

6 But Moses ^H4872 said ^H559 to the sons ^H1121 of Gad ^H1410 and the sons ^H1121 of Reuben ^H7205, “Should your brothers ^H251 go ^H935 to war ^H4421 while you remain ^H3427 here ^H6311? 7 And why ^H4100 are you discouraging ^H5106 H3820 the [fn]sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 from crossing ^H5674 over ^H5674 into the land ^H776 which ^H834 the LORD ^H3068 has given ^H5414 them? 8 This ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 your fathers ^H1 did ^H6213 when I sent ^H7971 them from Kadesh-barnea ^H6947 to see ^H7200 the land ^H776. 9 For when they went ^H5927 up ^H5927 to the [fn]Valley ^H5158 of Eshcol ^H812 and saw ^H7200 the land ^H776, they discouraged ^H5106 H3820 the [fn]sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 so that they did not go ^H935 into the land ^H776 which ^H834 the LORD ^H3068 had given ^H5414 them. 10 So the LORD’S ^H3068 anger ^H639 burned ^H2734 on that day ^H3117, and He swore ^H7650, saying ^H559, 11 ‘None ^H518 of the men ^H376 who came ^H5927 up ^H5927 from Egypt ^H4714, from twenty ^H6242 years ^H8141 old ^H1121 and upward ^H4605, shall see ^H7200 the land ^H127 which ^H834 I swore ^H7650 to Abraham ^H85, to Isaac ^H3327, and to Jacob ^H3290; for they did not follow ^H310 Me fully ^H4390, 12 except ^H1115 Caleb ^H3612 the son ^H1121 of Jephunneh ^H3312 the Kenizzite ^H7074 and Joshua ^H3091 the son ^H1121 of Nun ^H5126; for they have followed ^H310 the LORD ^H3068 fully ^H4390.’ 13 So the LORD’S ^H3068 anger ^H639 burned ^H2734 against Israel ^H3478, and He made them wander ^H5128 in the wilderness ^H4057 for forty ^H705 years ^H8141, until ^H5704 the entire ^H3605 generation ^H1755 of those who had done ^H6213 evil ^H7451 in the sight ^H5869 of the LORD ^H3068 came ^H8552 to ^H8552 an ^H8552 end ^H8552. 14 Now behold ^H2009, you have risen ^H6965 up ^H6965 in ^H8478 your fathers’ ^H1 place ^H8478, born ^H8635 of sinful ^H2400 men ^H376, to add ^H3254 still ^H5750 more ^H5750 to the burning ^H2740 anger ^H639 of the LORD ^H3068 against ^H413 Israel ^H3478. 15 For if you turn ^H7725 away ^H7725 from following ^H310 Him, He will once ^H3254 H5750 more ^H5750 leave ^H5117 them in the wilderness ^H4057, and you will destroy ^H7843 all ^H3605 these ^H2088 people ^H5971.”

16 Then they approached ^H5066 him and said ^H559, “We will build ^H1129 sheepfolds ^H6629 H1448 for our livestock ^H4735 here ^H6311 and cities ^H5892 for our little ^H2945 ones ^H2945; 17 but we ourselves ^H587 will be armed ^H2502, hurrying ^H2363 ahead ^H6440 of the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478, until ^{H5704 H834 H518} we have brought ^H935 them to their place ^H4725, while our little ^H2945 ones ^H2945 live ^H3427 in the fortified ^H4013 cities ^H5892 because ^H4480 H6440 of the inhabitants ^H3427 of the land ^H776. 18 We will not return ^H7725 to our homes ^H1004 until ^H5704 every ^H376 one ^H376 of the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 has gained ^H5157 possession ^H5157 of his inheritance ^H5159. 19 But we will not have ^H5157 an ^H5157 inheritance ^H5157 with them on the other ^H5676 side ^H5676 of the Jordan ^H3383 and beyond ^H1973, because ^H3588 our inheritance ^H5159 has come ^H935 to us on this side ^H5676 of the Jordan ^H3383 toward the east ^H4217.”

20 So Moses ^H4872 said ^H559 to them, “If ^H518 you will do ^H6213 [fn]this ^H2088, if ^H518 you will arm ^H2502 yourselves before ^H6440 the LORD ^H3068 for the war ^H4421, 21 and all ^H3605 of you armed ^H2502 men ^H2502 cross ^H5674 over ^H5674 the Jordan ^H3383 before ^H6440 the LORD ^H3068 until ^H5704 He has driven ^H3423 His enemies ^H340 out ^H3423 from Him, 22 and the land ^H776 is subdued ^H3533 before ^H6440 the LORD ^H3068, then afterward ^H310 you may return ^H7725 and be [fn]free ^H5355 of ^H5355 obligation ^H5355 toward ^H4480 the LORD ^H3068 and toward ^H4480 Israel ^H3478, and this ^H2088 land ^H776 shall be yours as property ^H272 before ^H6440 the LORD ^H3068. 23 But if ^H518 you do not do ^H6213 so ^H3651, behold ^H2009, you have sinned ^H2398 against the LORD ^H3068, and be sure ^H3045 that your sin ^H2403 will find ^H4672 you out ^H4672. 24 Build ^H1129 yourselves cities ^H5892 for your little ^H2945 ones ^H2945, and sheepfolds ^H1448 for your sheep ^H6792, and do ^H6213 [fn]what you have promised ^{H3318 H4480 H6310}.”

25 Then the sons ^H1121 of Gad ^H1410 and the sons ^H1121 of Reuben ^H7205 spoke ^H559 to Moses ^H4872, saying ^H559, “Your servants ^H5650 will do ^H6213 just ^H834 as ^H834 my lord ^H113 commands ^H6680. 26 Our little ^H2945 ones ^H2945, our wives ^H802, our livestock ^H4735, and all ^H3605 our cattle ^H929 shall [fn]remain ^H1961 there ^H8033 in the cities ^H5892 of Gilead ^H1568, 27 while your servants ^H5650, that is, everyone ^H3605 who is armed ^H2502 for war ^H6635, cross ^H5674 over ^H5674 in the presence ^H6440 of the LORD ^H3068 to battle ^H4421, just ^H834 as ^H834 my lord ^H113 says ^H1696.”

28 So Moses ^H4872 gave ^H6680 the command ^H6680 regarding them to Eleazar ^H499 the priest ^H3548, to Joshua ^H3091 the son ^H1121 of Nun ^H5126, and to the heads ^H7218 of the fathers’ ^H1 households of the tribes ^H4294 of the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478. 29 And Moses ^H4872 said ^H559 to them, “If ^H518 the sons ^H1121 of Gad ^H1410 and the sons ^H1121 of Reuben ^H7205, everyone ^H3605 who is armed ^H2502 for battle ^H4421, cross ^H5674 with you over ^H5674 the Jordan ^H3383 in the presence ^H6440 of the LORD ^H3068, and the land ^H776 is subdued ^H3533 before ^H6440 you, then you shall give ^H5414 them the land ^H776 of Gilead ^H1568 as their property ^H272; 30 but if ^H518 they do not cross ^H5674 over ^H5674 with you armed ^H2502, they shall instead be settled ^H270 among ^H8432 you in the land ^H776 of Canaan ^H3667.” 31 And the sons ^H1121 of Gad ^H1410 and the sons ^H1121 of Reuben ^H7205 answered ^H6030, saying ^H559, “As the LORD ^H3068 has said ^H1696 to your servants ^H5650, so ^H3651 we will do ^H6213. 32 We ourselves ^H5168 will cross ^H5674 over ^H5674 armed ^H2502 in the presence ^H6440 of the LORD ^H3068 into the land ^H776 of Canaan ^H3667, and the property ^H272 of our inheritance ^H5159 shall remain with us across ^H4480 H5676 the Jordan ^H3383.”

33 So Moses ^H4872 gave ^H5414 to them, to the sons ^H1121 of Gad ^H1410, the sons ^H1121 of Reuben ^H7205, and to the half-tribe ^H2677 H7626 of Joseph’s ^H3130 son ^H1121 Manasseh ^H4519, the kingdom ^H4467 of Sihon ^H5511, king ^H4428 of the Amorites ^H567 and the kingdom ^H4467 of Og ^H5747, the king ^H4428 of Bashan ^H1316, the land ^H776 with its cities ^H5892 with their [fn]territories ^H1367, the cities ^H5892 of the surrounding ^H5439 land ^H776. 34 And the sons ^H1121 of Gad ^H1410 built ^H1129 Dibon ^H1769, Ataroth ^H5852, Aroer ^H6177, 35 Atroth-shophan ^H5855, Jazer ^H3270, Jogbehah ^H3011, 36 Beth-nimrah ^H1039, and Beth-haran ^H1027 as fortified ^H4013 cities ^H5892, and sheepfolds ^H1448 for sheep ^H6629. 37 The sons ^H1121 of Reuben ^H7205 built ^H1129 Heshbon ^H2809, Elealeh ^H500, Kiriathaim ^H7156, 38 Nebo ^H5015, and Baal-meon ^H1186—their names ^H8034 being changed ^H5437—and Sibmah ^H7643, and they gave ^H7121 other names ^H8034 to the cities ^H5892 which ^H834 they built ^H1129. 39 The sons ^H1121 of Machir ^H4353 the son ^H1121 of Manasseh ^H4519 went ^H1980 to Gilead ^H1568 and took ^H3920 it, and dispossessed ^H3423 the Amorites ^H567 who ^H834 were in it. 40 So Moses ^H4872 gave ^H5414 Gilead ^H1568 to Machir ^H4353 the son ^H1121 of Manasseh ^H4519, and he lived ^H3427 in it. 41 Jair ^H2971 the son ^H1121 of Manasseh ^H4519 went ^H1980 and took ^H3920 its [fn]towns ^H2333, and called ^H7121 them [fn]Havvoth-jair ^H2334. 42 Nobah ^H5025 went ^H1980 and took ^H3920 Kenath ^H7079 and its villages ^H1323, and named ^H7121 it Nobah ^H5025, after his own name ^H8034.
