David Made King over All Israel

1 Then all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478 gathered ^H6908 to David ^H1732 at Hebron ^H2275 [fn]and said ^H559, “Behold ^H2009, we are your bone ^H6106 and your flesh ^H1320.

2 In times ^{H1571 H8032 H8543} past ^H8543 H8032, even ^H1571 when Saul ^H7586 was king ^H4428, you were the one who led ^H3318 out ^H3318 and brought ^H935 in ^H935 Israel ^H3478; and the LORD ^H3068 your God ^H430 said ^H559 to you, ‘You shall shepherd ^H7462 My people ^H5971 Israel ^H3478, and you shall be leader ^H5057 over ^H5921 My people ^H5971 Israel ^H3478.’” 3 So all ^H3605 the elders ^H2205 of Israel ^H3478 came ^H935 to the king ^H4428 at Hebron ^H2275, and David ^H1732 made ^H3772 a covenant ^H1285 with them in Hebron ^H2275 before ^H6440 the LORD ^H3068; and they anointed ^H4886 David ^H1732 king ^H4428 over ^H5921 Israel ^H3478, in accordance with the word ^H1697 of the LORD ^H3068 through ^H3027 Samuel ^H8050.

Jerusalem Is the Capital City

4 Then David ^H1732 and all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478 went ^H1980 to Jerusalem ^H3389 (that is, Jebus ^H2982); and the Jebusites ^H2983, the inhabitants ^H3427 of the land ^H776, were there ^H8033.

5 The inhabitants ^H3427 of Jebus ^H2982 said ^H559 to David ^H1732, “You shall not enter ^H935 here ^H2008.” Nevertheless David ^H1732 took ^H3920 the mountain ^H4686 stronghold ^H4686 of Zion ^H6726 (that is, the city ^H5892 of David ^H1732). 6 Now David ^H1732 had said ^H559, “Whoever ^H3605 is first ^H7223 to [fn]kill ^H5221 a Jebusite ^H2983 shall be chief ^H7218 and commander ^H8269.” Joab ^H3097 the son ^H1121 of Zeruiah ^H6870 went ^H5927 up ^H5927 first ^H7223, so he became ^H1961 chief ^H7218. 7 Then David ^H1732 lived ^H3427 in the stronghold ^H4679; therefore ^H5921 H3651 it was called ^H7121 the city ^H5892 of David ^H1732. 8 He [fn]built ^H1129 the city ^H5892 all ^H5439 around ^H5439, from the [fn]Millo ^H4407 to the surrounding ^H5439 area ^H5439; and Joab ^H3097 [fn]repaired ^H2421 the rest ^H7605 of the city ^H5892. 9 And David ^H1732 became ^H1980 greater ^H1419 H1980 and greater ^H1419 H1980, for the LORD ^H3068 of armies ^H6635 was with him.

David’s Mighty Men

10 Now these ^H428 are the heads ^H7218 of the mighty ^H1368 men ^H1368 whom ^H834 David ^H1732 had, who remained ^H2388 faithful ^H2388 to him in his kingdom ^H4438, together ^H5973 with ^H5973 all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478, to make ^H4427 him king ^H4427, in accordance with the word ^H1697 of the LORD ^H3068 concerning ^H5921 Israel ^H3478.

11 These ^H428 constitute the list ^H4557 of David’s ^H1732 mighty ^H1368 men ^H1368: Jashobeam ^H3434, the son ^H1121 of a Hachmonite ^H2453, the chief ^H7218 of the thirty ^H7970; he wielded ^H5782 his spear ^H2595 against ^H5921 three ^H7969 hundred ^H3967 [fn]whom he killed ^H2491 at one ^H259 time ^H6471.

20 As for [fn]Abshai ^H52 the brother ^H251 of Joab ^H3097, he was chief ^H7218 of the [fn]thirty ^H7970, and he wielded ^H5782 his spear ^H2595 against ^H5921 three ^H7969 hundred ^H3967 [fn]and killed ^H2491 them; and he had a name ^H8034 [fn]as well as the [fn]thirty ^H7970. 21 Of the three ^H7969 in the second ^H8147 rank he was the most ^H4480 honored ^H3513, and he became ^H1961 their commander ^H8269; however, he did not attain ^H935 the reputation of the first three ^H7969.

22 Benaiah ^H1141 the son ^H1121 of Jehoiada ^H3077, the son ^H1121 of a warrior ^H376 H2428 of Kabzeel ^H6909, mighty ^H7227 in deeds ^H6467, struck ^H5221 and ^H5221 killed ^H5221 the [fn]two ^H8147 sons of Ariel ^H739 of Moab ^H4124. He also went ^H3381 down ^H3381 and struck ^H5221 and ^H5221 killed ^H5221 a lion ^H738 inside ^H8432 a pit ^H953 on a snowy ^H7950 day ^H3117. 23 And he killed ^H5221 an Egyptian ^H4713, a man ^H376 of great stature ^H4060 [fn]five ^H2568 cubits ^H520 tall.
