God’s Covenant with David

1 And it came ^H1961 about ^H1961, when ^H834 David ^H1732 lived ^H3427 in his house ^H1004, that David ^H1732 said ^H559 to Nathan ^H5416 the prophet ^H5030, “Look ^H2009, I am living ^H3427 in a house ^H1004 of cedar ^H730, but the ark ^H727 of the covenant ^H1285 of the LORD ^H3068 is under ^H8478 tent ^H3407 curtains ^H3407.”

2 Then Nathan ^H5416 said ^H559 to David ^H1732, “Do ^H6213 whatever ^H3605 H834 is in your heart ^H3824, for God ^H430 is with you.”

3 But it happened ^H1961 that same ^H1931 night ^H3915, that the word ^H1697 of God ^H430 came ^H1961 to Nathan ^H5416, saying ^H559, 4 “Go ^H1980 and tell ^H559 David ^H1732 My servant ^H5650, ‘This ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 says ^H559: “You shall not build ^H1129 a house ^H1004 for Me to dwell ^H3427 in; 5 for I have not dwelt ^H3427 in a house ^H1004 since ^H4480 the day ^H3117 that I brought ^H5927 up ^H5927 Israel ^H3478 to this ^H2088 day ^H3117, but I have [fn]gone ^H1961 from tent ^H168 to tent ^H168 and from one dwelling ^H4908 place ^H4908 to another. 6 In all ^H3605 places where ^H834 I have walked ^H1980 with all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478, have I spoken ^H1696 a word ^H1697 with any ^H259 of the judges ^H8199 of Israel ^H3478, whom ^H834 I commanded ^H6680 to shepherd ^H7462 My people ^H5971, saying ^H559, ‘Why ^H4100 have you not built ^H1129 Me a house ^H1004 of cedar ^H730?’”’ 7 Now ^H6258, therefore, this ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 you shall say ^H559 to My servant ^H5650 David ^H1732: ‘This ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 of armies ^H6635 says ^H559: “I took ^H3947 you from the pasture ^H5116, from following ^H310 the sheep ^H6629, to be leader ^H5057 over ^H5921 My people ^H5971 Israel ^H3478. 8 I have been ^H1961 with you wherever ^H3605 H834 you have gone ^H1980, and have eliminated ^H3772 all ^H3605 your enemies ^H340 from you; and I will make ^H6213 for you a name ^H8034 like the name ^H8034 of the great ^H1419 ones ^H1419 who ^H834 are on the earth ^H776. 9 And I will appoint ^H7760 a place ^H4725 for My people ^H5971 Israel ^H3478, and will plant ^H5193 them there, so that they may live ^H7931 in ^H7931 their own place ^H8478 and not tremble ^H7264 with anxiety again ^H5750; and the [fn]wicked ^H5766 H1121 will not make ^H1086 them waste ^H1086 away ^H1086 anymore ^H3254 as they did previously ^H7223, 10 even from the day ^H3117 that I commanded ^H6680 judges ^H8199 to be over ^H5921 My people ^H5971 Israel ^H3478. And I will subdue ^H3665 all ^H3605 your enemies ^H340.

Moreover, I tell ^H5046 you that the LORD ^H3068 will build ^H1129 a house ^H1004 for you. 11 When ^H3588 your days ^H3117 are fulfilled ^H4390 that you must [fn]go ^H1980 to be with your fathers ^H1, then I will set ^H6965 up ^H6965 one of your [fn]descendants ^H2233 after ^H310 you, who ^H834 will be from your sons ^H1121; and I will establish ^H3559 his kingdom ^H4438. 12 He shall build ^H1129 for Me a house ^H1004, and I will establish ^H3559 his throne ^H3678 forever ^H5704 H5769. 13 I will be his father ^H1 and he shall be My son ^H1121; and I will not take ^H5493 My favor ^H2617 away ^H5493 from him, as I took ^H5493 it from him who ^H834 was before ^H6440 you. 14 But I will settle ^H3427 him in My house ^H1004 and in My kingdom ^H4438 forever ^H5704 H5769, and his throne ^H3678 will be established ^H3559 forever ^H5704 H5769.”’” 15 According to all ^H3605 these ^H428 words ^H1697 and according to all ^H3605 of this ^H2088 vision ^H2377, so ^H3651 Nathan ^H5416 spoke ^H1696 to David ^H1732.

David’s Prayer in Response

16 Then King ^H4428 David ^H1732 came ^H935 in ^H935 and sat ^H3427 before ^H6440 the LORD ^H3068, and said ^H559, “Who ^H4310 am I, LORD ^H3068 God ^H430, and what ^H4310 is my house ^H1004 that You have brought ^H935 me this ^H1988 far ^H1988?

17 This ^H2088 was ^H6994 a ^H6994 small ^H6994 thing ^H6994 in Your eyes ^H5869, God ^H430; but You have spoken ^H1696 of Your servant’s ^H5650 house ^H1004 for a great ^H7350 while ^H7350 to ^H7350 come ^H7350, and have viewed ^H7200 me according to the standard ^H8447 of a person ^H120 of high ^H4609 degree ^H4609, LORD ^H3068 God ^H430. 18 What ^H4100 more ^H3254 can David ^H1732 still ^H5750 say to You concerning the honor ^H3519 bestowed on Your servant ^H5650? For You know ^H3045 Your servant ^H5650. 19 LORD ^H3068, for Your servant’s ^H5650 sake ^H5668, and according to Your own heart ^H3820, You have accomplished ^H6213 all ^H3605 this ^H2088 greatness ^H1420, to make ^H3045 known ^H3045 all ^H3605 these great ^H1420 things ^H1420. 20 LORD ^H3068, there ^H369 is ^H369 none ^H369 like ^H3644 You, nor ^H369 is ^H369 there ^H369 any God ^H430 besides ^H2108 You, according to everything ^H3605 that we have heard ^H8085 with our ears ^H241. 21 And what ^H4310 one ^H259 nation ^H1471 on the earth ^H776 is like Your people ^H5971 Israel ^H3478, whom ^H834 God ^H430 went ^H1980 to redeem ^H6299 for Himself as a people ^H5971, to make ^H7760 for You a name ^H8034 by great ^H1420 and awesome ^H3372 things ^H3372, by driving ^H1644 out ^H1644 nations ^H1471 from before ^H6440 Your people ^H5971, whom ^H834 You redeemed ^H6299 from Egypt ^H4714? 22 For You have made ^H5414 Your people ^H5971 Israel ^H3478 Your own people ^H5971 forever ^H5704 H5769, and You, LORD ^H3068, became ^H1961 their God ^H430.

23 “Now ^H6258, LORD ^H3068, let the word ^H1697 that You have spoken ^H1696 concerning ^H5921 Your servant ^H5650 and concerning ^H5921 his house ^H1004 be established ^H539 forever ^H5704 H5769, and do ^H6213 just ^H834 as ^H834 You have spoken ^H1696. 24 Let Your name ^H8034 be established ^H539 and be ^H1431 great ^H1431 forever ^H5704 H5769, saying ^H559, ‘The LORD ^H3068 of armies ^H6635 is the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, a God ^H430 to Israel ^H3478; and the house ^H1004 of Your servant ^H5650 David ^H1732 is established ^H3559 before ^H6440 You.’ 25 For You, my God ^H430, have revealed ^H1540 H241 to Your servant ^H5650 that You will build ^H1129 him a house ^H1004; therefore ^H5921 H3651 Your servant ^H5650 has found ^H4672 courage to pray ^H6419 before ^H6440 You. 26 Now ^H6258, LORD ^H3068, You are God ^H430, and have [fn]promised ^H1696 this ^H2088 good ^H2896 thing ^H2896 to Your servant ^H5650. 27 And now ^H6258 You have decided ^H2974 to bless ^H1288 the house ^H1004 of Your servant ^H5650, that it may [fn]continue ^H1961 forever ^H5769 before ^H6440 You; for You, LORD ^H3068, have blessed ^H1288, and it is blessed ^H1288 forever ^H5769.”
