David’s Messengers Abused
1 Now it came H1961 about H1961 after H310 this H3651, that Nahash H5176 the king H4428 of the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 died H4191, and his son H1121 became H4427 king H4427 in H8478 his place H8478.
2 Then David H1732 said H559, “I will show H6213 kindness H2617 to Hanun H2586 the son H1121 of Nahash H5176, because H3588 his father H1 showed H6213 kindness H2617 to me.” So David H1732 sent H7971 messengers H4397 to console H5162 him concerning H5921 his father H1. And David’s H1732 servants H5650 came H935 into the land H776 of the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 to Hanun H2586 to console H5162 him. 3 But the commanders H8269 among the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 said H559 to Hanun H2586, “[fn]Do you think H5869 that David H1732 is honoring H3513 your father H1, in that he has sent H7971 comforters H5162 to you? Have his servants H5650 not come H935 to you to search H2713, to demolish H2015, and to spy H7270 out H7270 the land H776?” 4 So Hanun H2586 took H3947 David’s H1732 servants H5650 and shaved H1548 them, and cut H3772 off H3772 their robes H4063 in the middle H2677 as far H5704 as their buttocks H4667, and sent H7971 them away H7971. 5 Then certain people went H1980 and told H5046 David H1732 about H5921 the men H376. And he sent H7971 messengers to meet H7122 them, because H3588 the men H376 were very H3966 humiliated H3637. And the king H4428 said H559, “Stay H3427 at Jericho H3405 until H5704 H834 your beards H2206 grow H6779 back, then return H7725.”
6 When the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 saw H7200 that they had made H887 themselves repulsive H887 to David H1732, Hanun H2586 and the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 sent H7971 [fn]a thousand H505 talents H3603 of silver H3701 to hire H7936 for themselves chariots H7393 and horsemen H6571 from Mesopotamia H763, Aram-maacah H758 H4601, and Zobah H6678. 7 So they hired H7936 for themselves thirty-two H8147 H7970 thousand H505 chariots H7393, and the king H4428 of Maacah H4601 and his people H5971, who came H935 and camped H2583 opposite H6440 Medeba H4311. And the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 gathered H622 together from their cities H5892 and came H935 to the battle H4421. 8 When David H1732 heard H8085 about it, he sent H7971 Joab H3097 and all H3605 the army H6635, the mighty H1368 men H1368. 9 The sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 came H3318 out H3318 and drew H6186 up H6186 in battle H4421 formation H4421 at the entrance H6607 of the city H5892; and the kings H4428 who H834 had come H935 were by H905 themselves H905 in the field H7704.
Ammon and Aram Defeated
10 Now when Joab H3097 saw H7200 that the [fn]battle H4421 was set against H413 him at the front H6440 and at the rear H268, he selected H977 warriors from all H3605 the choice H970 men H970 in Israel H3478 and lined H6186 them up H6186 against H7122 the Arameans H758.
11 But the remainder H3499 of the people H5971 he placed H5414 [fn]under the command H3027 of [fn]Abshai H52 his brother H251; and they lined H6186 up H6186 against H7122 the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983. 12 He said H559, “If H518 the Arameans H758 are too H4480 strong H2388 for me, then you shall help H1961 H8668 me; but if H518 the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 are too H4480 strong H2388 for you, then I will help H3467 you. 13 Be strong H2388, and let’s show H2388 ourselves courageous H2388 for the benefit H1157 of our people H5971 and the cities H5892 of our God H430; and may the LORD H3068 do H6213 what H2896 is H2896 good H2896 in His sight H5869.” 14 So Joab H3097 and the people H5971 who H834 were with him advanced H5066 to battle H4421 against H6440 the Arameans H758, and they fled H5127 from him. 15 When the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 saw H7200 that the Arameans H758 had fled H5127, they also H1571 fled H5127 from his brother H251 Abshai H52 and entered H935 the city H5892. Then Joab H3097 came H935 to Jerusalem H3389.
16 When the Arameans H758 saw H7200 that they had been [fn]defeated H5062 by Israel H3478, they sent H7971 messengers H4397 and brought H3318 out H3318 the Arameans H758 who H834 were beyond H4480 H5676 the Euphrates River H5104, with Shophach H7780 the commander H8269 of the army H6635 of Hadadezer H1909 [fn]leading H6440 them. 17 When it was reported H5046 to David H1732, he gathered H622 all H3605 Israel H3478 together and crossed H5674 the Jordan H3383, and came H935 upon them and drew H6186 up H6186 in H6186 formation H6186 against H413 them. And when David H1732 drew H6186 up H6186 in battle H4421 formation H4421 against H7122 the Arameans H758, they fought H3898 against H5973 him. 18 And the Arameans H758 fled H5127 from Israel H3478, and David H1732 killed H2026 of the Arameans H758 seven H7651 thousand H505 charioteers H7393 and forty H705 thousand H505 foot H7273 soldiers H376 H7273; and he put H4191 Shophach H7780 the commander H8269 of the army H6635 to H4191 death H4191. 19 So when the servants H5650 of Hadadezer H1909 saw H7200 that they had been [fn]defeated H5062 by Israel H3478, they made H7999 peace H7999 with David H1732 and served H5647 him. So the Arameans H758 were H14 not willing H14 to help H3467 the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 anymore H5750.
