The Choice Young Men
In the third H7969 year H8141 of the reign H4438 of Jehoiakim H3079 king H4428 of Judah H3063, Nebuchadnezzar H5019 king H4428 of Babylon H894 came H935 to Jerusalem H3389 and besieged H6696 H5921 it.
And the Lord H136 handed H5414 H3027 Jehoiakim H3079 king H4428 of Judah H3063 over H5414 to him, along with some H4480 H7117 of the vessels H3627 of the house H1004 of God H430; and he brought H935 them to the land H776 of Shinar H8152, to the house H1004 of his [fn]god H430, and he brought H935 the vessels H3627 into the treasury H1004 H214 of his [fn]god H430.
Then the king H4428 told H559 Ashpenaz H828, the chief H7227 of his [fn]officials H5631, to bring H935 in H935 some H4480 of the sons H1121 of Israel H3478, including some H4480 of the [fn]royal H4410 family H2233 and of the nobles H6579, 4 youths H3206 in whom H834 there was no H369 H3605 impairment H3971, who were good-looking H2896 H4758, suitable H7919 for H7919 instruction H7919 in every H3605 kind of expertise H2451, endowed H3045 with understanding H995 and discerning H995 knowledge H4093, and who H834 had ability H3581 to [fn]serve H5975 in the king’s H4428 [fn]court H1964; and he ordered Ashpenaz to teach H3925 them the [fn]literature H5612 and language H3956 of the Chaldeans H3778. 5 The king H4428 also allotted H4487 for them a daily H3117 ration H1697 from the king’s H4428 choice H6598 food H6598 and from the wine H3196 which he drank H4960, and ordered that they be educated H1431 for three H7969 years H8141, at the end H7117 of which they were to [fn]enter H5975 the king’s H4428 personal H6440 service H5975 H6440. 6 Now among them from the sons H1121 of Judah H3063 were Daniel H1840, Hananiah H2608, Mishael H4332, and Azariah H5838. 7 Then the commander H8269 of the officials H5631 assigned H7760 new names H8034 to them; and to Daniel H1840 he assigned H7760 the name Belteshazzar H1095, to Hananiah H2608 Shadrach H7714, to Mishael H4332 Meshach H4335, and to Azariah H5838 Abed-nego H5664.
Daniel’s Resolve
But Daniel H1840 [fn]made H7760 up H7760 his mind H3820 that he would not defile H1351 himself with the king’s H4428 choice H6598 food H6598 or with the wine H3196 which he drank H4960; so he sought H1245 permission from the commander H8269 of the officials H5631 that he might not defile H1351 himself.
Now God H430 granted H5414 Daniel H1840 favor H2617 and compassion H7356 in the sight H6440 of the commander H8269 of the officials H5631. 10 The commander H8269 of the officials H5631 said H559 to Daniel H1840, “I am afraid H3372 of my lord H113 the king H4428, who H834 has allotted H4487 your food H3978 and your drink H4960; for why H4100 should he see H7200 your faces H6440 looking H2196 gaunt H2196 in H4480 comparison H4480 to H4480 the youths H3206 who H834 are your own age H1524? Then you would [fn]make me forfeit H2325 my head H7218 to the king H4428.” 11 But Daniel H1840 said H559 to the overseer H4453 whom H834 the commander H8269 of the officials H5631 had appointed H4487 over H5921 Daniel H1840, Hananiah H2608, Mishael H4332, and Azariah H5838, 12 “Please H4994 put H5254 your servants H5650 to H5254 the H5254 test H5254 for ten H6235 days H3117, and let us be given H5414 some H4480 vegetables H2235 to eat H398 and water H4325 to drink H8354. 13 Then let our appearance H4758 be [fn]examined H7200 in your presence H6440 and the appearance H4758 of the youths H3206 who H834 are eating H398 the king’s H4428 choice H6598 food H6598; and deal H6213 with your servants H5650 according to what H834 you see H7200.”
So he listened H8085 to them in this H2088 matter H1697, and put H5254 them to H5254 the H5254 test H5254 for ten H6235 days H3117. 15 And at the end H7117 of ten H6235 days H3117 their appearance H4758 seemed H7200 better H2896, and [fn]they were fatter H1277 H1320 than H4480 all H3605 the youths H3206 who H834 had been eating H398 the king’s H4428 choice H6598 food H6598. 16 So the overseer H4453 continued H1961 to [fn]withhold H5375 their choice H6598 food H6598 and the wine H3196 they were to drink H4960, and kept H5414 giving H5414 them vegetables H2235.
And as for these H428 four H702 youths H3206, God H430 gave H5414 them knowledge H4093 and intelligence H7919 in every H3605 kind of [fn]literature H5612 and expertise H2451; Daniel H1840 even understood H995 all H3605 kinds of visions H2377 and dreams H2472.
Then at the end H7117 of the days H3117 which H834 the king H4428 had [fn]specified H559 [fn]for presenting H935 them, the commander H8269 of the officials H5631 [fn]presented H935 them before H6440 Nebuchadnezzar H5019. 19 And the king H4428 talked H1696 with them, and out of them all H3605 not one was found H4672 like Daniel H1840, Hananiah H2608, Mishael H4332, and Azariah H5838; so they [fn]entered H5975 the king’s H4428 personal H6440 service H5975 H6440. 20 As for every H3605 matter H1697 of expertise H2451 [fn]and understanding H998 about which H834 the king H4428 consulted H1245 them, he found H4672 them ten H6235 times H3027 better H5921 than H5921 all H3605 the soothsayer H2748 priests H2748 and conjurers H825 who H834 were in all H3605 his realm H4438. 21 And Daniel H1840 [fn]continued H1961 until H5704 the first H259 year H8141 of Cyrus H3566 the king H4428.
