Jacob’s Family Settles in Goshen

1 Then Joseph ^H3130 went ^H935 in ^H935 and told ^H5046 Pharaoh ^H6547, and said ^H559, “My father ^H1 and my brothers ^H251 and their flocks ^H6629 and their herds ^H1241 and all ^H3605 that they have, have come ^H935 out of the land ^H776 of Canaan ^H3667; and behold ^H2009, they are in the land ^H776 of Goshen ^H1657.”

2 And he took ^H3947 five ^H2568 men ^H376 from among ^H7097 his brothers ^H251 and presented ^H3322 H6440 them to Pharaoh ^H6547. 3 Then Pharaoh ^H6547 said ^H559 to his brothers ^H251, “What ^H4100 is your occupation ^H4639?” So they said ^H559 to Pharaoh ^H6547, “Your servants ^H5650 are shepherds ^H7462, both ^H1571 we and our fathers ^H1.” 4 They also said ^H559 to Pharaoh ^H6547, “We have come ^H935 to reside ^H1481 in the land ^H776, for there ^H369 is ^H369 no ^H369 pasture ^H4829 for your servants’ ^H5650 flocks ^H6629, for the famine ^H7458 is severe ^H3515 in the land ^H776 of Canaan ^H3667. Now ^H6258, therefore, please ^H4994 let your servants ^H5650 live ^H3427 in the land ^H776 of Goshen ^H1657.” 5 Then Pharaoh ^H6547 said ^H559 to [fn]Joseph ^H3130, “Your father ^H1 and your brothers ^H251 have come ^H935 to you. 6 The land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714 is [fn]at your disposal ^H6440; settle ^H3427 your father ^H1 and your brothers ^H251 in the best ^H4315 of the land ^H776, let them live ^H3427 in the land ^H776 of Goshen ^H1657; and if ^H518 you know ^H3045 any ^H3426 capable ^H2428 men ^H376 among them, then [fn]put ^H7760 them in ^H8269 charge ^H8269 of my livestock ^H4735.”

7 Then Joseph ^H3130 brought ^H935 his father ^H1 Jacob ^H3290 and [fn]presented ^H5975 H6440 him to Pharaoh ^H6547; and Jacob ^H3290 blessed ^H1288 Pharaoh ^H6547. 8 And Pharaoh ^H6547 said ^H559 to Jacob ^H3290, “How ^H4100 many ^H4100 [fn]years ^H8141 have you lived ^H2416?” 9 So Jacob ^H3290 said ^H559 to Pharaoh ^H6547, “The [fn]years ^H8141 of my living ^H4033 abroad ^H4033 are [fn]130 ^H3967 H7970; few ^H4592 and [fn]unpleasant ^H7451 have been ^H1961 the [fn]years ^H8141 of my life ^H2416, nor ^H3808 have they [fn]attained ^H5381 the [fn]years ^H8141 [fn]that my fathers ^H1 lived ^H2416 during the days ^H3117 of their living ^H4033 abroad ^H4033.” 10 So Jacob ^H3290 blessed ^H1288 Pharaoh ^H6547, and went ^H3318 out ^H3318 from [fn]his presence ^H6440. 11 Now Joseph ^H3130 settled ^H3427 his father ^H1 and his brothers ^H251 and gave ^H5414 them property ^H272 in the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714, in the best ^H4315 of the land ^H776, in the land ^H776 of Rameses ^H7486, as Pharaoh ^H6547 had ordered ^H6680. 12 Joseph ^H3130 also provided ^H3557 his father ^H1 and his brothers ^H251 and all ^H3605 his father’s ^H1 household ^H1004 with [fn]food ^H3899, according to the [fn]number ^H6310 of their little ^H2945 ones ^H2945.

13 Now there ^H369 was ^H369 no ^H369 [fn]food ^H3899 in all ^H3605 the land ^H776, because ^H3588 the famine ^H7458 was very ^H3966 severe ^H3515, so that the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714 and the land ^H776 of Canaan ^H3667 languished ^H3856 because ^H4480 H6440 of the famine ^H7458. 14 And Joseph ^H3130 collected ^H3950 all ^H3605 the money ^H3701 that was found ^H4672 in the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714 and in the land ^H776 of Canaan ^H3667 in payment for the grain ^H7668 which ^H834 they bought ^H7666, and Joseph ^H3130 brought ^H935 the money ^H3701 into Pharaoh’s ^H6547 house ^H1004. 15 When the money ^H3701 was ^H8552 all ^H8552 spent ^H8552 in the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714 and in the land ^H776 of Canaan ^H3667, all ^H3605 the Egyptians ^H4714 came ^H935 to Joseph ^H3130 saying ^H559, “Give ^H3051 us [fn]food ^H3899, for why ^H4100 should we die ^H4191 in your presence ^H5048? For our money ^H3701 is ^H656 [fn]gone ^H656.” 16 Then Joseph ^H3130 said ^H559, “Give ^H3051 up your livestock ^H4735, and I will give ^H5414 you food for your livestock ^H4735, since ^H518 your money ^H3701 is ^H656 [fn]gone ^H656.” 17 So they brought ^H935 their livestock ^H4735 to Joseph ^H3130, and Joseph ^H3130 gave ^H5414 them [fn]food ^H3899 in exchange for the horses ^H5483 and the [fn]flocks ^H6629 and the herds ^H1241 and the donkeys ^H2543; and he [fn]fed ^H5095 them with [fn]food ^H3899 in exchange for all ^H3605 their livestock ^H4735 [fn]that year ^H8141. 18 But when that year ^H8141 ended ^H8552, they came ^H935 to him the [fn]next ^H8145 year ^H8141 and said ^H559 to him, “We will not hide ^H3582 from my lord ^H113 the fact ^H3588 that our money ^H3701 is ^H8552 all ^H8552 spent ^H8552, and the [fn]livestock ^H4735 H929 are my lord’s ^H113. There is nothing ^H3808 left ^H7604 [fn]for my lord ^H113 except ^H1115 H518 our bodies ^H1472 and our lands ^H127. 19 Why ^H4100 should we die ^H4191 before your eyes ^H5869, both ^H1571 we and our land ^H127? Buy ^H7069 us and our land ^H127 for [fn]food ^H3899, and we and our land ^H127 will be slaves ^H5650 to Pharaoh ^H6547. So give ^H5414 us seed ^H2233, so that we may live ^H2421 and not die ^H4191, and that the land ^H127 may not be desolate ^H3456.”

Result of the Famine

20 So Joseph ^H3130 bought ^H7069 all ^H3605 the land ^H127 of Egypt ^H4714 for Pharaoh ^H6547, for [fn]every ^H376 Egyptian ^H4714 sold ^H4376 his field ^H7704, because ^H3588 the famine ^H7458 was severe ^H2388 upon them. So the land ^H776 became ^H1961 Pharaoh’s ^H6547.

21 As for the people ^H5971, he relocated ^H5674 them to the cities ^H5892 from one end ^H7097 of Egypt’s ^H4714 border ^H1366 to the other ^H7097. 22 Only ^H7534 the land ^H127 of the priests ^H3548 he did not buy ^H7069, because ^H3588 the priests ^H3548 had an allotment ^H2706 from Pharaoh ^H6547, and they [fn]lived ^H398 off ^H398 the allotment ^H2706 which ^H834 Pharaoh ^H6547 gave ^H5414 them. Therefore ^H5921 H3651, they did not sell ^H4376 their land ^H127. 23 Then Joseph ^H3130 said ^H559 to the people ^H5971, “Behold ^H2005, today ^H3117 I have purchased ^H7069 you and your land ^H127 for Pharaoh ^H6547; now ^H1887, here is seed ^H2233 for you, and you may sow ^H2232 the land ^H127. 24 [fn]At the harvest ^H8393 you shall give ^H5414 a fifth ^H2549 to Pharaoh ^H6547, and [fn]four-fifths ^H702 H3027 shall be your own for seed ^H2233 of the field ^H7704 and for your food ^H400, and for those of your households ^H1004 and as food ^H398 for your little ^H2945 ones ^H2945.” 25 So they said ^H559, “You have saved ^H2421 our lives ^H2421! Let us find ^H4672 favor ^H2580 in the sight ^H5869 of my lord ^H113, and we will be Pharaoh’s ^H6547 slaves ^H5650.” 26 Joseph ^H3130 made ^H7760 it a statute ^H2706 concerning ^H5921 the land ^H127 of Egypt ^H4714, valid to this ^H2088 day ^H3117, that Pharaoh ^H6547 was to have the fifth ^H2569; only ^H7534 the land ^H127 of the priests ^H3548 [fn]did not become ^H1961 Pharaoh’s ^H6547.

27 Now Israel ^H3478 lived ^H3427 in the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714, in [fn]Goshen ^H1657, and they acquired ^H270 property ^H270 in it and were ^H6509 fruitful ^H6509 and became ^H7235 very ^H3966 numerous ^H7235. 28 And Jacob ^H3290 lived ^H2421 in the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714 for seventeen ^H7651 H6240 years ^H8141; so the [fn]length ^H3117 of Jacob’s ^H3290 life ^H2416 was 147 ^{H3967 H705 H7651} years ^H8141.

29 When [fn]the time ^H3117 for Israel ^H3478 to die ^H4191 drew ^H7126 near ^H7126, he called ^H7121 his son ^H1121 Joseph ^H3130 and said ^H559 to him, “Please ^H4994, if ^H518 I have found ^H4672 favor ^H2580 in your sight ^H5869, place ^H7760 your hand ^H3027 under ^H8478 my thigh ^H3409 now ^H4994 and deal ^H6213 with me in kindness ^H2617 and [fn]faithfulness ^H571: please ^H4994 do not bury ^H6912 me in Egypt ^H4714, 30 but when I [fn]lie ^H7901 down ^H7901 with my fathers ^H1, you shall carry ^H5375 me out of Egypt ^H4714 and bury ^H6912 me in their burial ^H6900 place ^H6900.” And he said ^H559, “I will do ^H6213 as you have said ^H1697.” 31 And he said ^H559, “Swear ^H7650 to me.” So he swore ^H7650 to him. Then Israel ^H3478 bowed ^H2331 in worship at the head ^H7218 of the bed ^H4296.
