Judah’s Apostasy
1 Now the word H1697 of the LORD H3068 came H1961 to me, saying H559,
2 “Go H1980 and proclaim H7121 in the ears H241 of Jerusalem H3389, saying H559, ‘This H3541 is H3541 what H3541 the LORD H3068 says H559:
“I remember H2142 regarding you the [fn]devotion H2617 of your youth H5271,
Your love H160 when you were H3623 a H3623 bride H3623,
Your following H1980 after H310 Me in the wilderness H4057,
Through a land H776 not sown H2232.
3 “Israel H3478 was holy H6944 to the LORD H3068,
The first H7225 of His harvest H8393.
All H3605 who ate H398 of it became H816 guilty H816;
Evil H7451 came H935 upon them,” declares H5002 the LORD H3068.’”
4 Hear H8085 the word H1697 of the LORD H3068, house H1004 of Jacob H3290, and all H3605 the families H4940 of the house H1004 of Israel H3478. 5 This H3541 is H3541 what H3541 the LORD H3068 says H559:
“What H4100 injustice H5766 did your fathers H1 find H4672 in Me,
That they went H7368 far H7368 from Me,
And walked H1980 after H310 emptiness H1892 and became H1891 empty H1891?
6 “They did not say H559, ‘Where H346 is the LORD H3068
Who brought H5927 us up H5927 out of the land H776 of Egypt H4714,
Who led H1980 us through the wilderness H4057,
Through a land H776 of deserts H6160 and of pits H7745,
Through a land H776 of drought H6723 and of [fn]deep H6757 darkness H6757,
Through a land H776 that no H3808 one H376 crossed H5674
And where H8033 no H3808 person H120 lived H3427?’
7 “I brought H935 you into the fruitful H3759 land H776
To eat H398 its fruit H6529 and its good H2898 things H2898.
But you came H935 and defiled H2930 My land H776,
And you made H7760 My inheritance H5159 an abomination H8441.
8 “The priests H3548 did not say H559, ‘Where H346 is the LORD H3068?’
And those who handle H8610 the Law H8451 did not know H3045 Me;
The [fn]rulers H7462 also revolted H6586 against Me,
And the prophets H5030 prophesied H5012 by Baal H1168
And walked H1980 after H310 things that were of no H3808 benefit H3276.
9 “Therefore H3651 I will still H5750 contend H7378 with you,” declares H5002 the LORD H3068,
“And I will contend H7378 with your sons’ H1121 sons H1121.
10 “For cross H5674 to the coastlands H339 of [fn]Kittim H3794 and see H7200,
And send H7971 to Kedar H6938 and observe H995 closely H3966,
And see H7200 if H2005 there has been H1961 anything like this H2088!
11 “Has a nation H1471 changed H4171 gods H430,
When they were not gods H430?
But My people H5971 have exchanged H4171 their glory H3519
For that which is of no H3808 benefit H3276.
12 “Be H8074 appalled H8074 at this H2088, you heavens H8064,
And shudder H8175, be very H3966 desolate H2717,” declares H5002 the LORD H3068.
13 “For My people H5971 have committed H6213 two H8147 evils H7451:
They have abandoned H5800 Me,
The fountain H4726 of living H2416 waters H4325,
To carve H2672 out H2672 for themselves cisterns H877,
That do H3808 not hold H3557 water H4325.
14 “Is Israel H3478 a slave H5650? Or H518 is he a servant H3211 born H3211 in the home H1004?
Why H4069 has he become H1961 plunder H957?
15 “The young H3715 lions H3715 have roared H7580 at him,
They have [fn]roared H5414 H6963 loudly H5414 H6963.
And they have made H7896 his land H776 a waste H8047;
His cities H5892 have been destroyed H5327, without H1097 inhabitant H3427.
16 “Also H1571 the [fn]men H1121 of Memphis H5297 and Tahpanhes H8471
Have [fn]shaved H7462 your head H6936.
17 “Have you not done H6213 this H2088 to yourself
By your abandoning H5800 the LORD H3068 your God H430
When H6256 He led H1980 you in the way H1870?
18 “But now H6258 what H4100 are you doing on the road H1870 to Egypt H4714,
Except to drink H8354 the waters H4325 of the [fn]Nile H7883?
Or what H4100 are you doing on the road H1870 to Assyria H804,
Except to drink H8354 the waters H4325 of the Euphrates River H5104?
19 “Your own wickedness H7451 will correct H3256 you,
And your apostasies H4878 will punish H3198 you;
Know H3045 therefore and see H7200 that it is evil H7451 and bitter H4751
For you to abandon H5800 the LORD H3068 your God H430,
And the fear H6345 of Me is not in you,” declares H5002 the Lord H136 [fn]GOD H3068 of armies H6635.
20 “For long H5769 ago H5769 [fn]I broke H7665 your yoke H5923
And tore H5423 off H5423 your restraints H4147;
But you said H559, ‘I will not serve H5647!’
For on every H3605 high H1364 hill H1389
And under H8478 every H3605 leafy H7488 tree H6086
You have lain H6808 down H6808 as a prostitute H2181.
21 “Yet I planted H5193 you as a choice H8321 vine H8321,
A completely H3605 faithful H571 seed H2233.
How H349 then have you turned H2015 yourself before Me
Into the degenerate H5493 shoots of a foreign H5237 vine H1612?
22 “Although H3588 H518 you wash H3526 yourself with lye H5427
And [fn]use H7235 much H7235 soap H1287,
The stain H3799 of your guilt H5771 is before H6440 Me,” declares H5002 the Lord H136 [fn]GOD H3068.
23 “How H349 can you say H559, ‘I am not defiled H2930,
I have not gone H1980 after H310 the Baals H1168’?
Look H7200 at your way H1870 in the valley H1516!
Know H3045 what H4100 you have done H6213!
You are a swift H7031 young H1072 camel H1072 running H8308 about H8308 senselessly H8308 on her ways H1870,
24 A wild H6501 donkey H6501 accustomed H3928 to the wilderness H4057,
That sniffs H7602 the wind H7307 in her passion H185 H5315.
Who H4310 can turn H7725 her away H7725 in her mating H8385 season H8385?
None H3605 H3808 who seek H1245 her will grow H3286 weary H3286;
In her month H2320 they will find H4672 her.
25 “Keep H4513 your feet H7272 from H4513 H4480 being bare H3182,
And your throat H1627 from thirst H6773;
But you said H559, ‘It is [fn]hopeless H2976!
No H3808! For I have loved H157 strangers H2114,
And I will walk H1980 after H310 them.’
26 “Like the shame H1322 of a thief H1590 when H3588 he is discovered H4672,
So H3651 the house H1004 of Israel H3478 is shamed H954;
They, their kings H4428, their leaders H8269,
Their priests H3548, and their prophets H5030,
27 Who say H559 to a tree H6086, ‘You are my father H1,’
And to a stone H68, ‘You gave H3205 me birth H3205.’
For they have turned H6437 their backs H6203 to Me,
And not their faces H6440;
But in the time H6256 of their [fn]trouble H7451 they will say H559,
‘Arise H6965 and save H3467 us!’
28 “But where H346 are your gods H430
Which H834 you made H6213 for yourself?
Let them arise H6965, if H518 they can save H3467 you
In the time H6256 of your [fn]trouble H7451!
For as many as the number H4557 of your cities H5892
Are your gods H430, Judah H3063.
29 “Why H4100 do you contend H7378 with Me?
You have all H3605 revolted H6586 against Me,” declares H5002 the LORD H3068.
30 “In vain H7723 I have struck H5221 your sons H1121;
They did not accept H3947 discipline H4148.
Your sword H2719 has devoured H398 your prophets H5030
Like a destroying H7843 lion H738.
31 “You generation H1755, look H7200 to the word H1697 of the LORD H3068.
Have I been H1961 a wilderness H4057 to Israel H3478,
Or H518 a land H776 of thick H3991 darkness H3991?
Why H4069 do My people H5971 say H559, ‘We are free to roam H7300;
We will no H3808 longer H5750 come H935 to You’?
32 “Can a virgin H1330 forget H7911 her jewelry H5716,
Or a bride H3618 her attire H7196?
Yet My people H5971 have forgotten H7911 Me
For days H3117 without H369 number H4557.
33 “How H4100 well H3190 you prepare H3190 your way H1870
Therefore H3651 even H1571 to the wicked H7451 women H7451
You have taught H3925 your ways H1870.
34 “Also H1571 on your skirts H3671 is found H4672
The lifeblood H1818 H5315 of the innocent H5355 poor H34;
You did not find H4672 them breaking H4290 in H4290.
But in H5921 spite H5921 of H5921 all H3605 these H428 things H428,
35 You said H559, ‘I am H5352 innocent H5352;
Surely H389 His anger H639 is turned H7725 away H7725 from me.’
Behold H2009, I will enter H8199 into H8199 judgment H8199 with you
Because H5921 you say H559, ‘I have not sinned H2398.’
36 “Why H4100 do you go H235 around so H3966 much H3966
Changing H8132 your way H1870?
Also H1571, you will be put H954 to H954 shame H954 by Egypt H4714,
Just H834 as H834 you were put H954 to H954 shame H954 by Assyria H804.
37 “From this H2088 place as H1571 well H1571 you will go H3318 out H3318
With your hands H3027 on your head H7218;
For the LORD H3068 has rejected H3988 those in whom H4009 you trust H4009,
And you will not prosper H6743 with them.”
