Israel’s Mourning Turned to Joy

1 “At that time ^H6256,” declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068, “I will be the God ^H430 of all ^H3605 the families ^H4940 of Israel ^H3478, and they shall be My people ^H5971.”

2 This ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 says ^H559:

“The people ^H5971 who ^H8300 survived ^H8300 the sword ^H2719

Found ^H4672 grace ^H2580 in the wilderness ^H4057—

Israel ^H3478, when it went ^H1980 to find ^H7280 its rest ^H7280.”

3 The LORD ^H3068 appeared ^H7200 to [fn]him [fn]long ^H7350 ago ^H7350, saying,

“I have loved ^H157 you with an everlasting ^H5769 love ^H160;

Therefore ^H5921 H3651 I have drawn ^H4900 you out ^H4900 with kindness ^H2617.

4 “I will build ^H1129 you again ^H5750 and you will be rebuilt ^H1129,

Virgin ^H1330 of Israel ^H3478!

You will [fn]take ^H5710 up your tambourines ^H8596 again ^H5750,

And go ^H3318 out ^H3318 to the dances ^H4234 of the revelers ^H7832.

5 “Again ^H5750 you will plant ^H5193 vineyards ^H3754

On the [fn]hills ^H2022 of Samaria ^H8111;

The planters ^H5193 will plant ^H5193

And will [fn]enjoy ^H2490 the fruit.

6 “For there ^H3426 will be ^H3426 a day ^H3117 when watchmen ^H5341

On the hills ^H2022 of Ephraim ^H669 call ^H7121 out ^H7121,

‘Arise ^H6965, and let’s go ^H5927 up ^H5927 to Zion ^H6726,

To the LORD ^H3068 our God ^H430.’”

7 For this ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 says ^H559:

“Sing ^H7442 aloud ^H7442 with joy ^H8057 for Jacob ^H3290,

And be joyful ^H6670 with the [fn]chief ^H7218 of the nations ^H1471;

Proclaim ^H8085, give ^H1984 praise ^H1984, and say ^H559,

‘LORD ^H3068, save ^H3467 Your people ^H5971,

The remnant ^H7611 of Israel ^H3478!’

8 “Behold ^H2009, I am bringing ^H935 them from the north ^H6828 country ^H776,

And I will gather ^H6908 them from the remote ^H3411 parts ^H3411 of the earth ^H776,

Among them those who are blind ^H5787 and those who limp ^H6455,

The pregnant ^H2030 woman ^H2030 and she who is in ^H3205 labor ^H3205, together ^H3162;

They will return ^H7725 here ^H2008 as a great ^H1419 assembly ^H6951.

9 “They will come ^H935 with weeping ^H1065,

And by pleading ^H8469 I will bring ^H2986 them;

I will lead ^H1980 them by streams ^H5158 of waters ^H4325,

On a straight ^H3477 path ^H1870 on which they will not stumble ^H3782;

For I am ^H1961 a father ^H1 to Israel ^H3478,

And Ephraim ^H669 is My firstborn ^H1060.”

10 Hear ^H8085 the word ^H1697 of the LORD ^H3068, you nations ^H1471,

And declare ^H5046 it in the coastlands ^H339 far ^H4801 away ^H4801,

And say ^H559, “He who scattered ^H2219 Israel ^H3478 will gather ^H6908 him,

And He will keep ^H8104 him as a shepherd ^H7462 keeps his flock ^H5739.”

11 For the LORD ^H3068 has ransomed ^H6299 Jacob ^H3290

And redeemed ^H1350 him from the hand ^H3027 of him who was stronger ^H2389 than ^H4480 he.

12 “They will come ^H935 and shout ^H7442 for ^H7442 joy ^H7442 on the height ^H4791 of Zion ^H6726,

And they will be radiant ^H5102 over ^H413 the [fn]bounty ^H2898 of the LORD ^H3068—

Over ^H5921 the grain ^H1715, the new ^H8492 wine ^H8492, the oil ^H3323,

And over ^H5921 the young ^H1121 of the flock ^H6629 and the herd ^H1241.

And their life ^H5315 will be like a watered ^H7302 garden ^H1588,

And they will never ^H3808 H5750 languish ^H1669 again ^H3254.

13 “Then ^H227 the virgin ^H1330 will rejoice ^H8055 in the dance ^H4234,

And the young ^H970 men ^H970 and the old ^H2205 together ^H3162;

For I will turn ^H2015 their mourning ^H60 into joy ^H8342

And comfort ^H5162 them, and give ^H8055 them joy ^H8055 for their sorrow ^H3015.

14 “I will refresh ^H7301 the soul ^H5315 of the priests ^H3548 with [fn]abundance ^H1880,

And My people ^H5971 will be ^H7646 satisfied ^H7646 with My goodness ^H2898,” declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068.

15 This ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 says ^H559:

“A voice ^H6963 is heard ^H8085 in Ramah ^H7414,

Lamenting ^H5092 and bitter ^H8563 weeping ^H1065.

Rachel ^H7354 is weeping ^H1065 for her children ^H1121;

She refuses ^H3985 to be comforted ^H5162 for her children ^H1121,

Because ^H3588 they are no ^H369 more ^H369.”

16 This ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 says ^H559:

“Restrain ^H4513 your voice ^H6963 from weeping ^H1065

And your eyes ^H5869 from tears ^H1832;

For your work ^H6468 will be rewarded ^H7939,” declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068,

“And they will return ^H7725 from the land ^H776 of the enemy ^H340.

17 “There ^H3426 is ^H3426 hope ^H8615 for your future ^H319,” declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068,

“And your children ^H1121 will return ^H7725 to their own territory ^H1366.

18 “I have certainly ^H8085 heard ^H8085 Ephraim ^H669 grieving ^H5110,

‘You have disciplined ^H3256 me, and I was corrected ^H3256,

Like an untrained ^H3808 H3925 calf ^H5695;

Bring ^H7725 me back ^H7725 that I may be restored ^H7725,

For You are the LORD ^H3068 my God ^H430.

19 ‘For after ^H310 I turned ^H7725 back ^H7725, I repented ^H5162;

And after ^H310 I was instructed ^H3045, I [fn]slapped ^H5606 my thigh ^H3409;

I was ^H954 ashamed ^H954 and also ^H1571 humiliated ^H3637

Because ^H3588 I bore ^H5375 the shame ^H2781 of my youth ^H5271.’

20 “Is Ephraim ^H669 My dear ^H3357 son ^H1121?

Is he a delightful ^H8191 child ^H3206?

Indeed ^H3588, as often ^H1767 as I have spoken ^H1696 against him,

I certainly ^H2142 still remember ^H2142 him;

Therefore ^H5921 H3651 My [fn]heart ^H4578 yearns ^H1993 for him;

I will certainly ^H7355 have ^H7355 mercy ^H7355 on ^H7355 him,” declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068.

21 “Set ^H5324 up ^H5324 roadmarks ^H6725 for yourself,

Place ^H7760 guideposts ^H8564 for yourself;

Direct ^H7896 your [fn]mind ^H3820 to the highway ^H4546,

The way ^H1870 by which you went ^H1980.

Return ^H7725, O virgin ^H1330 of Israel ^H3478,

Return ^H7725 to these ^H428 your cities ^H5892.

22 “How ^H4970 long ^H5704 H4970 will you waver ^H2559,

You rebellious ^H7728 daughter ^H1323?

For the LORD ^H3068 has created ^H1254 a new ^H2319 thing ^H2319 on the earth ^H776:

A woman ^H5347 will shelter ^H5437 a man ^H1397.”

23 This ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 of armies ^H6635, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478 says ^H559: “Once again ^H5750 they will speak ^H559 this ^H2088 word ^H1697 in the land ^H776 of Judah ^H3063 and in its cities ^H5892 when I restore ^H7725 their fortunes ^H7622,

‘The LORD ^H3068 bless ^H1288 you, O place ^H5116 of righteousness ^H6664,

O holy ^H6944 hill ^H2022!’

24 Judah ^H3063 and all ^H3605 its cities ^H5892 will live ^H3427 together ^H3162 in it, the farmers ^H406 and those who travel ^H5265 with flocks ^H5739.

25 For I give ^H7301 plenty ^H7301 of ^H7301 water ^H7301 to the weary ^H5889 ones ^H5315, and [fn]refresh ^H4390 everyone ^H3605 who languishes ^H1669.” 26 At this ^H2088 I awoke ^H6974 and looked ^H7200, and my sleep ^H8142 had been pleasant ^H6149 to me.

A New Covenant

27 “Behold ^H2009, days ^H3117 are coming ^H935,” declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068, “when I will sow ^H2232 the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478 and the house ^H1004 of Judah ^H3063 with the seed ^H2233 of mankind ^H120 and the seed ^H2233 of animals ^H929.

28 And just ^H834 as ^H834 I have watched ^H8245 over ^H5921 them to uproot ^H5428 them, tear ^H5422 them down ^H5422, ruin ^H2040, destroy ^H6, and bring ^H7489 disaster ^H7489 on them, so ^H3651 I will watch ^H8245 over ^H5921 them to build ^H1129 and to plant ^H5193 them,” declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068.

29 “In those ^H1992 days ^H3117 they will no ^H3808 longer ^H5750 say ^H559,

‘The fathers ^H1 have eaten ^H398 sour ^H1155 grapes ^H1155,

[fn]But it is the children’s ^H1121 teeth ^H8127 that have become ^H6949 blunt ^H6949.’

30 But everyone ^H376 will die ^H4191 for his own wrongdoing ^H5771; each ^H3605 person ^H120 who eats ^H398 the sour ^H1155 grapes ^H1155, his own teeth ^H8127 will become ^H6949 blunt ^H6949.

31 “Behold ^H2009, days ^H3117 are coming ^H935,” declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068, “when I will make ^H3772 a new ^H2319 covenant ^H1285 with the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478 and the house ^H1004 of Judah ^H3063, 32 not like the covenant ^H1285 which ^H834 I made ^H3772 with their fathers ^H1 on the day ^H3117 I took ^H2388 them by the hand ^H3027 to bring ^H3318 them out ^H3318 of the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714, My covenant ^H1285 which ^H834 they broke ^H6565, although I was ^H1166 a ^H1166 husband ^H1166 to them,” declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068. 33 “For this ^H2088 is the covenant ^H1285 which ^H834 I will make ^H3772 with the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478 after ^H310 those ^H1992 days ^H3117,” declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068: “I will put ^H5414 My law ^H8451 within ^H7130 them and write ^H3789 it on their heart ^H3820; and I will be their God ^H430, and they shall be My people ^H5971. 34 They will not teach ^H3925 again ^H5750, each ^H376 one ^H376 his neighbor ^H7453 and each ^H376 one ^H376 his brother ^H251, saying ^H559, ‘Know ^H3045 the LORD ^H3068,’ for they will all ^H3605 know ^H3045 Me, from the least ^H6996 of them to the greatest ^H1419 of them,” declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068, “for I will forgive ^H5545 their wrongdoing ^H5771, and their sin ^H2403 I will no ^H3808 longer ^H5750 remember ^H2142.”

35 This ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 says ^H559,

He who gives ^H5414 the sun ^H8121 for light ^H216 by day ^H3119

And the [fn]fixed ^H2708 order ^H2708 of the moon ^H3394 and the stars ^H3556 for light ^H216 by night ^H3915,

Who stirs ^H7280 up the sea ^H3220 so that its waves ^H1530 roar ^H1993—

The LORD ^H3068 of armies ^H6635 is His name ^H8034:

36 “If ^H518 [fn]this ^H428 fixed ^H2706 order ^H2706 departs ^H4185

From Me,” declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068,

“Then the descendants ^H2233 of Israel ^H3478 also ^H1571 will cease ^H7673

To be ^H1961 a nation ^H1471 before ^H6440 Me [fn]forever ^H3605 H3117.”

37 This ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 says ^H559:

“If ^H518 the heavens ^H8064 above ^H4480 H4605 can be measured ^H4058

And the foundations ^H4144 of the earth ^H776 searched ^H2713 out ^H2713 below ^H4295,

Then I will also ^H1571 reject ^H3988 all ^H3605 the descendants ^H2233 of Israel ^H3478

For everything ^H3605 that they have done ^H6213,” declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068.

38 “Behold ^H2009, days ^H3117 are coming ^H935,” declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068, “when the city ^H5892 will be rebuilt ^H1129 for the LORD ^H3068 from the Tower ^H4026 of Hananel ^H2606 to the Corner ^H6438 Gate ^H8179. 39 The measuring ^H4060 line ^H6957 will go ^H3318 out ^H3318 farther ^H5750 straight ^H5048 ahead ^H5048, to the hill ^H1389 Gareb ^H1619; then it will turn ^H5437 to Goah ^H1601. 40 And the entire ^H3605 valley ^H6010 of the dead ^H6297 bodies ^H6297 and of the ashes ^H1880, and all ^H3605 the fields ^H7709 as far ^H5704 as the brook ^H5158 Kidron ^H6939 to the corner ^H6438 of the Horse ^H5483 Gate ^H8179 toward the east ^H4217, shall be holy ^H6944 to the LORD ^H3068; it will not be uprooted ^H5428 or overthrown ^H2040 ever ^H5769 again ^H5750.”
