Elihu Claims to Speak for God

1 “However ^H199, please ^H4994 hear ^H8085 my speech ^H4405, Job ^H347,

And listen ^H238 to all ^H3605 my words ^H1697.

2 “Behold ^H2009 now ^H4994, I open ^H6605 my mouth ^H6310,

My tongue ^H3956 in my [fn]mouth ^H2441 speaks ^H1696.

3 “My words ^H561 are from the integrity ^H3476 of my heart ^H3820,

And my lips ^H8193 speak ^H4448 knowledge ^H1847 sincerely ^H1305.

4 “The Spirit ^H7307 of God ^H410 has made ^H6213 me,

And the breath ^H5397 of [fn]the Almighty ^H7706 gives ^H2421 me life ^H2421.

5 “Refute ^H7725 me if ^H518 you can ^H3201;

Line ^H6186 up ^H6186 against ^H6440 me, take ^H3320 your stand ^H3320.

6 “Behold ^H2005, I belong to God ^H410, like you;

I too ^H1571 have been [fn]formed ^H7169 out ^H7169 of the clay ^H2563.

7 “Behold ^H2009, no ^H3808 fear ^H367 of me should terrify ^H1204 you,

Nor ^H3808 should my pressure ^H405 weigh ^H3513 heavily ^H3513 on you.

8 “You have in ^H389 fact ^H389 spoken ^H559 [fn]while I listened ^H241,

And I heard ^H8085 the sound ^H6963 of your words ^H4405:

9 ‘I am pure ^H2134, without ^H1097 wrongdoing ^H6588;

I am innocent ^H2643 and there is no ^H3808 guilt ^H5771 in me.

10 ‘Behold ^H2005, He [fn]invents ^H4672 [fn]criticisms ^H8569 against ^H5921 me;

He counts ^H2803 me as His enemy ^H340.

11 ‘He puts ^H7760 my feet ^H7272 in the stocks ^H5465;

He watches ^H8104 all ^H3605 my paths ^H734.’

12 “Behold ^H2005, let me respond ^H6030 to you, you are ^H6663 not right ^H6663 in this ^H2088,

For God ^H433 is ^H7235 greater ^H7235 than ^H4480 mankind ^H582.

13 “Why ^H4069 do you complain ^H7378 to Him

That He does not give ^H6030 an account ^H6030 of all ^H3605 His doings ^H1697?

14 “Indeed ^H3588 God ^H410 speaks ^H1696 once ^H259,

Or twice ^H8147, yet no ^H3808 one notices ^H7789 it.

15 “In a dream ^H2472, a vision ^H2384 of the night ^H3915,

When deep ^H8639 sleep ^H8639 falls ^H5307 on people ^H376,

While they slumber ^H8572 in their beds ^H4904,

16 Then ^H227 He opens ^H1540 the ears ^H241 of people ^H376,

And horrifies ^H2865 them with warnings ^H4148,

17 So that He may turn ^H5493 a person ^H120 away ^H5493 from bad conduct ^H4639,

And [fn]keep ^H3680 a man ^H1397 from pride ^H1466;

18 He keeps ^H2820 his soul ^H5315 back ^H2820 from the pit ^H7845,

And his life ^H2416 from perishing ^H5674 by the spear ^H7973.

19 “A person is also rebuked ^H3198 by pain ^H4341 in his bed ^H4904,

And with constant ^H386 complaint ^H7379 in his bones ^H6106,

20 So that his life ^H2416 loathes ^H2092 bread ^H3899,

And his soul ^H5315, food ^H3978 [fn]that he should crave ^H8378.

21 “His flesh ^H1320 wastes ^H3615 away ^H3615 from sight ^H7210,

And his bones ^H6106, which were not seen ^H7210, stick ^H8192 out ^H8192.

22 “Then his soul ^H5315 comes ^H7126 near ^H7126 to the pit ^H7845,

And his life ^H2416 to those who bring ^H4191 death ^H4191.

23 “If ^H518 there ^H3426 is ^H3426 an interceding ^H3887 angel ^H4397 for him,

One ^H259 out of a thousand ^H505,

To remind ^H5046 a person ^H120 of what ^H3476 is ^H3476 [fn]right ^H3476 for him,

24 And he is ^H2603 gracious ^H2603 to him, and says ^H559,

‘Free ^H6308 him from going ^H3381 down ^H3381 to the pit ^H7845,

I have found ^H4672 a ransom ^H3724’;

25 Let his flesh ^H1320 become ^H7375 fresher ^H7375 than ^H4480 in youth ^H5290,

Let him return ^H7725 to the days ^H3117 of his youthful ^H5934 vigor ^H5934;

26 Then he will pray ^H6279 to God ^H433, and He will accept ^H7521 him,

So that he may see ^H7200 His face ^H6440 with joy ^H8643,

And He will restore ^H7725 His righteousness ^H6666 to that person ^H582.

27 “He will sing ^H7891 to people ^H376 and say ^H559,

‘I have sinned ^H2398 and perverted ^H5753 what ^H3477 is ^H3477 right ^H3477,

And it is ^H7737 not proper ^H7737 for me.

28 ‘He has redeemed ^H6299 my soul ^H5315 from going ^H5674 to the pit ^H7845,

And my life ^H2416 will see ^H7200 the light ^H216.’

29 “Behold ^H2005, God ^H410 does ^H6466 all ^H3605 these ^H428 things for a man ^H1397 two ^H6471 or three ^H7969 times ^H6471,

30 To bring ^H7725 back ^H7725 his soul ^H5315 from the pit ^H7845,

So that he may be enlightened ^H215 with the light ^H216 of life ^H2416.

31 “Pay ^H7181 attention ^H7181, Job ^H347, listen ^H8085 to me;

Keep ^H2790 silent ^H2790, and let me speak ^H1696.

32 “Then if ^H518 [fn]you have ^H3426 anything ^H4405 to ^H4405 say ^H4405, answer ^H7725 me;

Speak ^H1696, for I would take ^H2654 pleasure ^H2654 in justifying ^H6663 you.

33 “If ^H518 not, listen ^H8085 to me;

Keep ^H2790 silent ^H2790, and I will teach ^H502 you wisdom ^H2451.”
