The Preaching of John the Baptist

1 Now ^G1161 in those ^G1565 days ^G2250 John ^G2491 the Baptist ^G910 *[fn]came ^G3854, [fn]preaching ^G2784 in the wilderness ^G2048 of Judea ^G2449, saying ^G3004,

2 “Repent ^G3340, for the kingdom ^G932 of heaven ^G3772 has ^G1448 come ^G1448 near ^G1448.” 3 For this ^G3778 is the one referred ^G3004 to [fn]by Isaiah ^G2268 the prophet ^G4396 when he said ^G3004,

“THE VOICE ^G5456 OF ONE [fn]CALLING ^G994 [fn]OUT ^G994 IN THE WILDERNESS ^G2048,

‘PREPARE ^G2090 THE WAY ^G3598 OF THE LORD ^G2962,

MAKE ^G4160 HIS PATHS ^G5147 STRAIGHT ^G2117!’”

4 Now ^G1161 John ^G2491 himself ^G846 had ^G2192 [fn]a garment ^G1742 of camel’s ^G2574 hair ^G2359 and a leather ^G1193 belt ^G2223 around ^G4012 his waist ^G3751; and his food ^G5160 was locusts ^G200 and wild ^G66 honey ^G3192. 5 At ^G5119 that ^G5119 time ^G5119 Jerusalem ^G2414 was going ^G1607 out ^G1607 to him, and all ^G3956 Judea ^G2449 and all ^G3956 the region ^G4066 around ^G4066 the Jordan ^G2446; 6 and they were being baptized ^G907 by him in the Jordan ^G2446 River ^G4215, as they confessed ^G1843 their sins ^G266.

7 But when he saw ^G3708 many ^G4183 of the Pharisees ^G5330 and Sadducees ^G4523 coming ^G2064 for [fn]baptism ^G908, he said ^G3004 to them, “You [fn]offspring ^G1081 of vipers ^G2191, who ^G5101 warned ^G5263 you to flee ^G5343 from the wrath ^G3709 to ^G3195 come ^G3195? 8 Therefore ^G3767 produce ^G4160 fruit ^G2590 consistent ^G514 with repentance ^G3341; 9 and do not assume ^G1380 that you can say ^G3004 to yourselves ^G1438, ‘We have ^G2192 Abraham ^G11 as our father ^G3962’; for I tell ^G3004 you that God ^G2316 is able ^G1410, from these ^G3778 stones ^G3037, to raise ^G1453 up ^G1453 children ^G5043 for Abraham ^G11. 10 And the axe ^G513 is already ^G2235 laid ^G2749 at the root ^G4491 of the trees ^G1186; therefore ^G3767, every ^G3956 tree ^G1186 that does not bear ^G4160 good ^G2570 fruit ^G2590 is being cut ^G1581 down ^G1581 and thrown ^G906 into the fire ^G4442.

11 “As for me, I baptize ^G907 you [fn]with water ^G5204 for repentance ^G3341, but He who is coming ^G2064 after ^G3694 me is mightier ^G2478 than I, and I am ^G1510 not fit ^G2425 to remove ^G941 His sandals ^G5266; He will baptize ^G907 you [fn]with the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151 and fire ^G4442. 12 His winnowing ^G4425 fork ^G4425 is in His hand ^G5495, and He will thoroughly ^G1245 clear ^G1245 His threshing ^G257 floor ^G257; and He will gather ^G4863 His wheat ^G4621 into the barn ^G596, but He will burn ^G2618 up ^G2618 the chaff ^G892 with unquenchable ^G762 fire ^G4442.”

The Baptism of Jesus

13 Then ^G5119 Jesus ^G2424 *arrived ^G3854 from Galilee ^G1056 at the Jordan ^G2446, coming to John ^G2491 to be baptized ^G907 by him.

14 But John ^G2491 tried to prevent ^G1254 Him, saying ^G3004, “I have ^G2192 the need ^G5532 to be baptized ^G907 by You, and yet You are coming ^G2064 to me?” 15 But Jesus ^G2424, answering ^G611, said ^G3004 to him, “Allow ^G863 it at this ^G737 time ^G737; for in this ^G3779 way ^G3779 it is fitting ^G4241 for us to fulfill ^G4137 all ^G3956 righteousness ^G1343.” Then ^G5119 he *allowed ^G863 Him. 16 After He was baptized ^G907, Jesus ^G2424 came ^G305 up ^G305 immediately ^G2117 from the water ^G5204; and behold ^G2400, the heavens ^G3772 were opened ^G455, and [fn]he saw ^G3708 the Spirit ^G4151 of God ^G2316 descending ^G2597 as a dove ^G4058 and [fn]settling ^G2064 on Him, 17 and behold ^G2400, a voice ^G5456 from the heavens ^G3772 said ^G3004, “This ^G3778 is [fn]My beloved ^G27 Son ^G5207, with whom ^G3739 I am ^G2106 well ^G2106 pleased ^G2106.”
