Nehemiah’s Prayer Answered
1 And it came H1961 about H1961 in the month H2320 Nisan H5212, in the twentieth H6242 year H8141 of King H4428 Artaxerxes H783, that wine H3196 was before H6440 him, and I picked H5375 up H5375 the wine H3196 and gave H5414 it to the king H4428. Now I had not been H1961 sad H7451 in his presence H6440.
2 So the king H4428 said H559 to me, “Why H4069 is your face H6440 sad H7451, though you are H2470 not ill H2470? This H2088 is nothing H369 but sadness H7455 of heart H3820.” Then I was H3372 very H3966 much H7235 afraid H3372. 3 And I said H559 to the king H4428, “May the king H4428 live H2421 forever H5769. Why H4069 should my face H6440 not be H7489 sad H7489 when H834 the city H5892, the [fn]site H1004 of my fathers’ H1 tombs H6913, is desolate H2720 and its gates H8179 have been consumed H398 by fire H784?” 4 Then the king H4428 said H559 to me, “[fn]What H4100 would you request H1245?” So I prayed H6419 to the God H430 of heaven H8064. 5 Then I said H559 to the king H4428, “If H518 it pleases H2895 the king H4428, and if H518 your servant H5650 has found H3190 favor H3190 before H6440 you, I request that you send H7971 me to Judah H3063, to the city H5892 of my fathers’ H1 tombs H6913, that I may rebuild H1129 it.” 6 Then the king H4428 said H559 to me, with the queen H7694 sitting H3427 beside H681 him, “How H4970 long H5704 H4970 will your journey H4109 be, and when H4970 will you return H7725?” So it pleased H3190 the king H4428 to send H7971 me, and I gave H5414 him a definite H2165 time H2165. 7 And I said H559 to the king H4428, “If H518 it pleases H2895 the king H4428, let letters H107 be given H5414 me for the governors H6346 of the provinces beyond H5676 the River H5104, so that they will allow me to pass H5674 through H5674 until H5704 H834 I come H935 to Judah H3063, 8 and a letter H107 to Asaph H623 the keeper H8104 of the king’s H4428 forest H6508, so H834 that H834 he will give H5414 me timber H6086 to make H7136 beams H7136 for the gates H8179 of the citadel H1002 which H834 is by the [fn]temple H1004, for the wall H2346 of the city H5892, and for the house H1004 to which H834 I will go H935.” And the king H4428 granted H5414 them to me because the good H2896 hand H3027 of my God H430 was on me.
9 Then I came H935 to the governors H6346 of the provinces beyond H5676 the Euphrates River H5104 and gave H5414 them the king’s H4428 letters H107. Now the king H4428 had sent H7971 with me officers H8269 of the army H2428 and horsemen H6571. 10 And when Sanballat H5571 the Horonite H2772 and Tobiah H2900 the Ammonite H5984 [fn]official H5650 heard H8085 about it, it was very H7451 H1419 displeasing H7489 to them that someone H120 had come H935 to seek H1245 the welfare H2896 of the sons H1121 of Israel H3478.
Nehemiah Inspects Jerusalem’s Walls
11 So I came H935 to Jerusalem H3389 and was there H8033 for three H7969 days H3117.
12 And I got H6965 up H6965 in the night H3915, I and a few H4592 men H376 with me. I did not tell H5046 anyone H120 what H4100 my God H430 was putting H5414 into my [fn]mind H3820 to do H6213 for Jerusalem H3389, and there H369 was H369 no H369 animal H929 with me except H3588 H518 the animal H929 on which H834 I was riding H7392. 13 So I went H3318 out H3318 at night H3915 by the Valley H1516 Gate H8179 in the direction H6440 of the Dragon’s H5886 Spring H5886 and on to the Dung H830 Gate H8179, and I was inspecting H7663 the walls H2346 of Jerusalem H3389 which H834 were broken H6555 down H6555 and its gates H8179 which had been consumed H398 by fire H784. 14 Then I passed H5674 on H5674 to the Fountain H5869 Gate H8179 and the King’s H4428 Pool H1295, but there H369 was H369 no H369 place H4725 for [fn]my mount H929 to pass H5674. 15 So I was going H5927 up H5927 at night H3915 by the ravine H5158 and inspecting H7663 the wall H2346. Then I entered H935 the Valley H1516 Gate H8179 again and returned H7725. 16 However, the officials H5461 did not know H3045 where H575 I had gone H1980 or what H4100 I was doing H6213; nor H3808 had I as yet H3651 told H5046 the Jews H3064, the priests H3548, the nobles H2715, the officials H5461, or the rest H3499 who were doing H6213 the work H4399.
17 Then I said H559 to them, “You see H7200 the bad H7451 situation H7451 we are in, that Jerusalem H3389 is desolate H2720 and its gates H8179 have been burned H3341 by fire H784. Come H1980, let’s rebuild H1129 the wall H2346 of Jerusalem H3389 so that we will no H3808 longer H5750 be a disgrace H2781.” 18 And I told H5046 them how H834 the hand H3027 of my God H430 had been favorable H2896 to me and also H637 about the king’s H4428 words H1697 which H834 he had spoken H559 to me. Then they said H559, “Let’s arise H6965 and build H1129.” So they put H2388 their hands H3027 to the good H2896 work. 19 But when Sanballat H5571 the Horonite H2772 and Tobiah H2900 the Ammonite H5984 [fn]official H5650, and Geshem H1654 the Arab H6163 heard H8085 about it, they mocked H3932 us and despised H959 us, and said H559, “What H4100 is this H2088 thing H1697 that you are doing H6213? Are you rebelling H4775 against H5921 the king H4428?” 20 So I answered H7725 H1697 them and said H559 to them, “The God H430 of heaven H8064 will make H6743 us successful H6743; therefore we His servants H5650 will arise H6965 and build H1129, but you have H369 no H369 part H2506, right H6666, or memorial H2146 in Jerusalem H3389.”
